Discussion / .9.9.6 Fireangel?
« on: March 02, 2012, 21:33 »
According to the wiki the Fireangel grants immunity to explosions / splash damage. I didn't check the in-game description (to ensure the wiki wasn't out of date), but I am either misunderstanding this or it was changed. I got Fireangel in my most recent game and was most certainly taking damage from both direct hits and near misses from Imps, Cacodemons, Hell Knights, and Barons of Hell. (Eventually suffered a YASD vs a commando...) Does this only apply to my own rocket launcher attacks? Does it only apply to barrels / fire damage?

Thanks for the tips - I'll give them a go tonight probably. Going for Dodgemaster instead of beelining to a shotgun master trait... never thought of that.

Discussion / AoSh vs Cyberdemon?
« on: February 12, 2012, 14:05 »
So I'm having difficulty beating AoSh. Two points kill me most often: Chained Court (after Hell's Arena), and Tower of Babel. The former I can always just skip so I'm not worried about that (plus I can usually beat it as long as I don't get impatient and/or reckless, and bring a few medkits). However every time I fight the Cyberdemon I have major trouble beating him. Shotguns are terribly weak at range, and I can never get close to him without eating a rocket and getting tossed back a half-dozen tiles. I've tried hiding behind the pillars until he gets close and then cornershooting him and trying to dance around away from him, but every time after three or so shots he just demolishes the pillar and I'm back where I started. Any tips?

Haha thanks for the advice guys. No I do consider myself a roguelike "veteran" though not an especially skilled player. I started out with Nethack when... oh, I must have been 11 or 12? I've been intermittently playing them ever since (I'm 25 now).

Ironbeer: I was under the impression that ADOM was one of the easier roguelikes... Regardless, your points: Thanks for the tip about "Severely Wounded", I was going for that assembly (though I later realized I could never get it, being as Finesse (and thus Whizkid) is blocked by MAD), and the only resource I was really trying to save was my time, lol.

ZicherCZ: That's a rule I know quite well! Be it DF's "Losing is Fun" motto or IVAN's masochism (blasted kamikazie dwarves...!) I've received a lot of... erm, lessons.

6
Yeah, I haven't played roguelikes heavily in a few years so I'm not particularly good at them, and I wasn't amazing even when I did play them a lot. Never was able to beat ADOM...

The mortem speaks for itself, mostly. High points: Power armor, tactical shotty, found a bunch of pretties (mostly left behind), cleared Mortuary (where I lost my power armor, which partially cost me the game).

This is where things started to go wrong: with no power armor, had to use Angelic, which is woefully fragile compared. Lost my fireproof boots shortly after (went skinnydipping in lava once or ten times). Whatever whatever, kept going, pushed on through to Dis. Bring it on Mastermind, let's do this. After fighting him around a pillar a bit (jerk wouldn't get knocked back), what was left of my Angelic armor melted and I started burning Medkits. Debated taking the time to strap on my red armor but didn't know if it was worth it. A quick look at his health showed "almost dead" or similar, so I figured "Heck, I can take one more round of combat before using another medkit. Shoot him and finish this hopefully." BOOM! He's still standing. RATATATATAT! I'm not. Commence rage.

It's not over though... A few minutes later, while relating the story to a friend, it dawned on me... that item in my inventory... that shiny thing I got from the lava pits... that lava element that could have made me invulnerable. More rage. >:(

What if instead of mislabeling everything as something else, everything appeared identical? All enemies looked like demons, all guns looked like pistols, something like that?

On the SSG idea... I guess I didn't really know how the assault shotgun worked as I've never used it. The wiki isn't very clear on the topic either, all I gathered from it was that the gun worked more or less like an assault shotgun you didn't have to pump.

Requests For Features / Weapon ideas

At the risk of sounding like a stereotypical newbie I figured I'd share my ideas for items.

Super Shotgun. Unique, basically the next-step-up from the double shotgun. I'm thinking it would work either identically to the SSG (only bigger) or be a sorta blend between the SSG and the combat shotty -- a 6 round mag fired 2 at a time with pump-action reloading.

Hunting Rifle. Not sure if it should be unique or not; either way, it'd have a 1 round clip, a very slow fire rate, moderate reload rate, be very accurate (with accuracy degrading as they get closer) and deal lots of damage. 10mm ammo.

Mini-rocket Launcher. Unique (or not?), fires rockets that deal half damage of a normal one with a reduced blast radius, but has a moderate-sized clip and fires the rockets very quickly (perhaps even in a burst). Slow reload.

Modulous Blade. This may or may not be pointless. I don't know if melee weapons can have mods applied to them or not; if they can't, I'm thinking this would be a weak-ish melee weapon that could have accuracy, damage, and speed mods applied to it as if it were an advanced weapon.

Angel of Hatred

You hate being here. You hate everything and everyone around you. Your hatred gnaws at you night and day, like a leech sucking at your very soul. You would go insane were it not for the killing; the sight of their blood soothes your tortured, hate-filled mind.

Pros: You gain life equal to 5% of the damage you deal, +0.5% per level gained. (Cumulative, so if you deal 10 damage in one attack and 10 damage in the next attack you would gain 1 life after the second attack.)

Cons: You lose life at a rate of 1 HP every 20 seconds, -1 second per level gained.

Requests For Features / Re: I HAVE AN AWESOME IDEA!!!!(caps)
« on: December 07, 2008, 23:07 »
Thought I'd throw in my two cents, for what they're worth (which is probably significantly less than two cents).

I like shotguns. Well, more specifically I like the idea of shotguns. Automatic weapons just feel too mundane and obvious for me, not to mention the rate at which plasma cells vanish. I think they work great how they are, and fill a rather significant niche in the game (namely -- bailing out those long range guys when something angry gets too close), as well as being a fun primary that needs a bit of tactics to use, like pretty much everything else in this game. Aside from which, there are so many other traits to choose from

That being said, however, I do see some merit in his suggestion. I am of the opinion that in most games, any given option chosen at any given levelup should provide SOME usefulness regardless of what sort of path the character may take later in the game. I especially feel this way about the basic traits, since they unlock other, potentially useful advanced traits. I mean, imagine if by some fluke of chance you sank went down the Eagle Eye and Finesse trees, got all the useful traits for a chaingun build, and instead of finding fancy chainguns and plasma rifles to back up the strategy, every other level contained some form of advanced shotgun along with gazillions of shotgun shells? Now, obviously Eagle Eye should be more useful with a ranged-weapon build than a shotgun build; however I wouldn't mind seeing a little bit of crossover between the two even if it is ever so slight. After all, every other basic trait (barring SoaG, but that's special in it's own right) benefits the player in some way, however slight, no matter how they are armed: Reloader lets you get more bullets in your gun faster if there is an emergency need to reload in the middle of a firefight, Finesse lets you put lead in people faster, Hellrunner lets you get away before the demons can take advantage of the fact that you're out of ammo, etc.

However, I have another counter-point to my own statement. This particular idea simply is not logical. Of course, neither is the idea that just because you're an asshole you can do more damage, but that can be attributed to knowing where to aim, etc. But with the shotgun, you'd have to pretty well defy the laws of physics to make a shotgun lose damage more slowly at a range. The things work by tossing out a spray of small projectiles; the high damage at close range is due to more of them hitting the target. But as they get further away, they become less densely packed, meaning it becomes less and less likely that any given one will hit any given object.

So in short: I like the idea of this ability granting some small benefit, but dislike the idea of it providing this particular benefit.

Making this quick because I have to get to work.

To make a long story short, dualgunner, doing well, cruising along, grabbed the BFG for a little extra firepower when it came time to use it, slapped a damage mod on it for more of the same. Forgot to unequip it when firing at an imp in the middle of a field of acid barrels. Yeah... I was in the field too.
