1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.

2 killed the bitch and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

Well, here's my first successful intuition build. Lost a few guys to trying this before, but this one finally took off.

If there's one thing I've learnt, its that Cateye, Intuition and an (A) Chaingun (eventually an Assault Chaingun paired with a Hyperblaster) are amazing. If you're cautious, you can snipe basically everything on the level; and the only thing that really threatens you are ambushes at the start of a level, levels like the wall, and the bosses (which all do indeed drain more medikits than usual, but still).

Ran out of 10mm ammo in hell again even though I had the backpack and brought tonnes. Fortunately, I had the hyperblaster this time (and no pistols restriction) as backup. I then found two 10mm chains shortly afterward, so I was in the clear.

Decided against doing Spiders Lair this time since I was looking pretty ragged at the time (had lost all medikits since 3 barons and 4 cacodemons were camping on the stairs at the start of the level).

Somehow generated a level with an Invincibility globe right by the entrance to Dis again so got Masterminds Brain for the second time. (and again, no nuke!)

This guy also got my Silver Armoury badge, so cool. Only one silver and one bronze to promotion now.

Actually, why do we even have "You need to taste blood" shown repeatedly at all?
It's not like the player won't notice the berserk effect otherwise...
Is it needed for Console? I'd assume the red screen might be a bad idea for that (if there are red ASCII)
But yeah, its a pointless and irritating message when you're playing tiles.

On a related note, it would be nice to have a message when you're running out of something, especially Envirosuit. Or maybe have the screen effect start strobing or blinking (though that would be irritating).

Yes, I've also wasted medikits in this fashion. Always wondered if there could be a confirmation or a prevention of accidental button presses.

I mean, I set the config to remind me my ammo is empty since I can hammer 'f' sometimes.

Good going, you even beat me to the full win - though truth be told I haven't tried getting there as of yet, I'm more interested in shiny achievements. You seem to be picking up fast enough, the combined lava element and nucular rifle are a surefire way of getting to the Fortress.
Yeah, its funny, but I've never been that interested in achievements in games; I'd rather try to win with all builds and combos of skills, even if every win ends up being ITYTD or HNTR. I'm somewhat notorious on the Crawl forums for managing a couple of wins by playing badly and advocating character themes over playing well and streaking. The only thing I'm actually gunning for is enough achievements to unlock Angel of 100 since that mode interests me.

Incidentally, I've never gone for MAD and am very fond of shotguns, but can't say I have trouble taking knights and barons out - as long as they don't come from opposite directions anyway.
In this run, the main problem was they always seemed to be miles away and the spread always seem to miss them.
You have yet to meet a bastard baron wearing a ballistic vest who managed to stockpile tons of medkits.
Yeah, I've met one with Onyx armour and two Medikits; and a Hell Knight with a Ballistic Vest before. Utter bastards.

Also, now you mention it, there was a Former Sergeant that had a Ballistic Vest this run. I noticed he'd taken 3 blasts and survived, so I dropped a rocket on him. :D

Well, that was bizarre, but I guess it proved something else to me.

I started this run under the assumption that I'd be taking Army of the Dead for the first time, but, silly me, for my level 5 pick I wasn't paying attention after a swarm of demons and grabbed Hellrunner automatically. About 2 minutes later I was like F@£&!

Despite this, as you can see, this character continued shotgunning like a boss and went on to be my first full win. Funny that, and hence proving to me that Master skills aren't always the be all and end all point of a build. In fact, having a Whizkid Marine was quite refreshing.

Having Badass from level 1 was amazingly handy; since I guess its like have 2 and 1/2 Ironman picks (on a Marine = 90 health?). Well, at least on ITYTD. It'll perhaps be less useful on higher settings where theres less health globes, but for this run, it was great.

Of course, skipping out on Army of the Dead meant that Barons were generally a complete pain in the butt. The Wall was rather hard, but fortunately I had picked up a tactical shotty on the level before, which, combined with a 1-wide hole and a bit of radarshooting, made all the difference (hilariously, I levelled up after one hell knight shot the other in the ass here). I think it was kind of a fluke that I managed it this time; but are there any consistant tips for making sure you blow open just a 1 space wide hole?

The RNG tried to kill me quite a few times after that. First level of Deimos appeared to be a tiny cave Cacodemon theme-level which was scary. I finally managed to assemble a tactical shotty two levels after that which really helped until I could pick up Whizkid and make the Focused Double Shotgun later (which is amazing, by the way- kills the only real weakness of using a Double Barrel, that awful spread).

After this point (tac-shotty), though, the game utterly swamped me with P and B mods. Not even joking, I've never seen so many, must have seen 12 P and 7 B mods over the course of the game. I assembled a Gatling Gun for a laugh at one point since there were so many. At least I was also able to generate a Nanofibre Green Vest as a result; this lasted me most of the game.

Hell was utterly horrible in its level generation. There were two Arachnotron themed levels, then one with two Arch-Viles standing behind a huge crowd of Formers.  The Focused Double Shotty continued to perform well though. Lava Pits had the entire Gothic set lying around and an Energy Shield Vest. Nuked Spidey with the Nuclear Plasma Rifle I'd kept this time (ate the Lava Element to invincible myself).

The ES Vest helped immensely for the JC fight. I was duelling him with the focused shotty for quite some time, but eventually there were just too many Hell Knights and Cacodemons swarming the place so I pulled out the BFG to clear them away, but this also finished him off (he teleported into the BFG shot aimed at the Hell Knights, which was hilarious).

Thanks Shark20061.

Also, I'm guessing the Tower Shield/Ballistic Shield is not actually an off-hand item by its placement in the wiki?

Seems a bit funny that you're wearing a shield, makes me want to shout "Ain't that cute, but its wrong!". :D

I'm just wondering how annoying would it be to get it if you still didn't know how to wield it.

You're the only known one to get these so far though, so the rest of us probably don't need to worry about it yet.
Well, I found a Berserker Armour on my very first game, actually. Didn't know what to do with it, mind you.

You want to play a doomgal, put a femme name when prompted for one. This achieves exactly as much as a gender option would.
Did you read this at all:
Quote
Mainly because I feel bad for a DoomGuy if I just give him a girls name and pretend. Because I can't help thinking: "clearly he was a guy, its just he got given a girly name by his squadmates". :D

Sure the characterization is a little thin, but Doomguy is still a character, just like Mario, Sonic, Lara Croft, etc. are characters (and you can't change their genders at will).

Actually, to me, Doomguy is characterised pretty well, since I actually owned the cheesy comic (where all the quotes for DoomRL skills are from, I believe) and I've read the rather meh novel (Flynn Taggart, I believe was his name there).

Interestingly, though, in the novel, there was a Female UAC marine. So its not entirely without precedent. Still, I figured most would see it as a horrible idea, hence me placing it here!

Gosh, wish I had that much shelf-space Luckydee. Mine are a double stacked nightmare. :D

On topic, I just finished reading the latest Iron Druid book, 'Tricked' by Kevin Hearne. Tremendous fun as always, especially for the conversations he has with his Irish Wolfhound Oberon.

Probably considered a horrible idea by most people... but...

Female Marines (DoomGirls?)

Mainly because I feel bad for a DoomGuy if I just give him a girls name and pretend. Because I can't help thinking: "clearly he was a guy, its just he got given a girly name by his squadmates". :D

And all this is because I can always think of badass girls from anime that actually have some of the skills I'd be learning in game (i.e. they actually demonstrate Gun Kata, or Malicious Blades), and whom are still sufficiently whiny enough for me to want to get them killed in a Roguelike, too. :D

It's a known bug.  I think it will be fixed in the next release.  Something about circular buffers going wrong.
That's good, but also not. Part of me wants to think this is one of those "good bad bugs" like any bug that causes hilarity and silliness but has no directly problematic effect on gameplay. I had one of those myself once in my RPGmaker game; a flag tripped by talking to a child in-game forever made everyone in the game talk also like a kid. It was hilarious to see old guys going "Squee!" and running around like they were 12 again. :D

Yeah; I was wandering about that. Sometimes, after you win/die, it adds some rather random text.

I've also seen "You die. You reload the shotgun."

That was silly.

13
I'd like to do it with a Malicious Blades build just for the funny visual of carrying this massive, massive sword in one hand and a dinky little combat knife in the other. :D
Or you could have a Chainsword. At least they're then somewhat more balanced against one another, right? :D

Also, if the Dragonslayer is your offhand, it actually makes sense as to why you're getting those epic resistances, you're just standing behind it.

It's never really a good idea to dump the nuclear plasma rifle.

Even if you aren't built for it, it's still four completely free plasma bursts.
Yeah, I guess, but I had a regular plasma rifle & a BFG at the time, and rarely used those since I was malicious blading.

Well, I'll know in future that its more important.
