Discussion / Favourite special level

I'm in the process of building some new levels and whilst I have some ideas, I'd love to give the community something enjoyable. So I'm reaching out to the group to ask you "What is your favorite one or two levels? (and if you have time, a simple comment on why)" I can't promise the standard we're all used to but hopefully it's on the right track.
Of course for those who want to write a bit more, you're welcome! And thank you everyone who chooses to take part.

Post Mortem / [HMP|100%|YAVP] Strongman Diamond

Took quite a few goes to get started but the first TaN after Vampyre eased the pressure substantially. Found a mid-late nano to build powered red armor and that sealed the deal.

Something @Omega Tyrant shared (https://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,8862.0.html) that made a big difference:
* You only have to kill the monster with your fists. Wounding is ok (and in my mind necessary in general).
* An unmodded pistol won't kill any monster (unless you miss and hit a barrel). OT also shared that a single SOB rank or SOG won't hurt either (but it's not much point in this run).

Some things I learnt:
* Attracting attention with a pistol and then punching a monster (with Brute) from behind the doorway works well. Probably something to remember for future N! runs.
* Dodging formers bullet shots is not hard and saves a lot of damage
* Monsters who wall-slide up on you won't fire a ranged attack. For some reason I thought they did.
* If you pistol shoot a distant monster from a doorway, they'll come into the doorway (see above).
* If you pistol shoot a distant monster and then run to the doorway, they won't necessarily follow you to the door. Instead they'll wander around. Don't try to shoot them again! You might kill them.
* If you pistol shoot a former captain and you hear them use a medkit, your next shot may still kill them!
* Using a shotgun at long distance is probably ok. Probably.

Some notes about fist-only from Omega Tyrant that I wish I had known at the start:
* Meleeing a monster with a non-melee weapon will not invalidate the run
* A monster shooting at you and blowing up a barrel while you wield another weapon won't invalidate the run
* Nuking doesn't invalidate the run (unless you aren't invincible!)

And then:
* Going to the JC level and failing will invalidate your run because spawned monsters will prevent your 100% claim

Nightmare! / [N!|AAo666|30%|YAVP] Centurial Angelic

I've been continuing to work through achievements and I was now trying to get all assemblies and artifacts. I played HNTR Ao100+AoMr and found 2 dragonslayers which I had to leave behind. Then I played two Ao100 vampyres merely to find a single nano in each. After looking at the plat achievements I had yet to collect, I really wanted to take out the assemblies, artifacts and char level 25.

So I decided to go back on my word and take on 666 knowing it would mean lots more artifacts and hopefully nano kits. As @OmegaTyrant mentioned, Vampyre is game-shattering but after getting through the dungeon, I struggle to believe you could make it another way. As you work your way into the latter half of the game, some levels started with over 200 monsters. Navigating that without berserk and healing seems improbable without savescumming.

I didn't find it much of a grind even though it was 10.5hrs. The first 100 was interesting as I was level clearing, and the second 100 fine. After about 300, when the monsters picked up, and I finally got dragonslayer and the last nano I needed, I started to dive more seriously.
* I only found about 1 chainsaw every 100 levels, the first at 120 and the second at 230. Possibly they were being blown up but chainsword (P) is a perfectly fine weapon.
* In the early game I spent a lot of time clearing the full map, looking for nanos.
* Antigrav boots were awesome. Far less time taking damage, and realising that they self-heal is great. At one point I just pottered about on a lava elemental level and checked them, only to find they were at 2%. Phew!
* Picking up Hell's staff was great for diving because it was a free phase and potentially more, opening up the possibility of quicker access to stairs (ideally), a computer map (pretty good) or just health to try another phase.
* Getting Cerberus boots early on is very helpful to have the confidence to walk anywhere and destroy ranged monsters. Later on antigrav boots are the better trade - reducing hits (and they regenerate).
* Given you don’t need armor, focus on speed (and onyx protection purely for comfort). Faster means more you, less monsters and less pressing enter to get through the messages. Phaseshift APO armor is awesome, as are antigrav plasteel boots. Down to 0.16s while berserk (i.e. always since early on).
* All nests are comfortably clearable except nightmare arachnotrons. I did one to show I could and then skipped the rest. Very risky in open arenas.
* Levels get very dense later on.
* Felt good to get a full victory

Tips for newcomers:
* Don’t bother nuking or going for levers – you won’t get the achievement.
* If you weren't sure, you can reach level 25 before dungeon level 100 by clearing levels. I think I got there about dlevel 89.

My favorite moment was having some fun in a pain elemental nest. Got up to 480 monsters left on the level!

The issue appears to be in Lua's calculation of resistances, somehow generating an overflow. I can't see how the overflow would manifest but if it did, then the display would show:

The new version of DRL implements a {!} around the string in mortem.lua. I'm not yet familiar with this syntax so it may be increasing the safety of the variable. I'd be very interested to see anyone else who has this issue.

Thanks for posting your bug report. I'd love to get a little more info and take a closer look.
* Which version of drl are you using?
* Does it happen on every item use, or only occasionally?
* If it's occasional, can you see a pattern when it does occur?
* Can you send any more screenshots showing the error occurring?
* Ideally, do you have a save file just prior to the crash?

I used to be a developer. So in an effort to repay the group a little I've downloaded the source. I've attempted to get the environment up and running but have got about 50% of the way there following the readme. I can compile a drl.exe (that crashes) and cannot seem to find suitable instructions to compile the wads or fpcvalkyrie (if that's even necessary).

I don't want to waste anyone's time. Is it worth trying to set it up and contribute (initially by documenting the process into readme.md on the development branch) or is there a tight-knit team that would rather not have someone extra poking around?

I hate to mention this because you guys do a fantastic job. It's a just a little graphical issue.

I died in the Arena in N! doing AoSh, second group of monsters (second attachment).
I then jumped into a fresh game with the same parameters, and found that the level feeling had not been reset. It still showed the Arena Master's voice booming (see attachment).

Certainly that was my first thought too. As much as I enjoyed the win, it's better to recognise genuine skill. Completed my first AoB/N! yesterday on the same strat but didn't watch my kill count and just drifted below 60%. Given what you've said, I'll switch to some other challenges (rather than cheesing) and reassess when 0.9.9.9 comes out.

I only kept that in case level 100 turned up a surprise. The manuals sometimes skimp on detail (which leaves the experience appreciably open). I'd say over 70% of the levels were in the nude. The rest was spent vainly trying to keep some clothes.

Also don't ditch the Rocket Launcher, it's Vampyre's best friend as rocket jumping will cover for your lack of movement speed to let you close gaps against troublesome enemies instantly, and you can face rocket yourself to trigger Berserker whenever (when Berserker triggers from being hit, its resistances are applied before damage is inflicted to you, so you'll just be trading 1 HP for 20 actions of Berserk if you got any half decent armor on).
Haven't even attempted one yet, although I did punch the odd barrel to start berserk mode.

As a new player, I searched but failed to find any information on why Sereg got his name on a difficulty mode. This fills in an important lore gap for me.

The lack of guaranteed items and extra EXP from special levels makes the early game hell of Nightmare even worse in A100, and trying to just stair dive through is far less viable when you got 100 floors to get through and some inevitable very nasty ones if your level and equipment aren't up to snuff (though I suppose that makes it more bragworthy to have Centurial as your first Diamond).
I had no idea what horrors were below so I didn't dive very much (maybe 5 or 10 levels). Vampyre meant I didn't have to once I got past its level. From then on 60% of the time I explored the majority. 30% a minority and 10% rushed the exit after taking damage.

Powered Red Armor (or even Powered Blue Armor) definitely would have been the better option, it would be already reducing basically every hit to 1 damage when you're berserked and would reduce many melee hits to 1 damage without berserk too.

I used to think Hellrunner block was reason to give up on Vampyre. Having attained it it is currently unnecessary.

This is to inspire all those players who might know a bit about DoomRL and are looking to gain some confidence.

I'm just a moderate player who has repicked up DoomRL in the last month (previously played fifteen or twenty years ago upto HNTR). I've played about 25 games so far and haven't taken on a HMP game yet. However after this run I'm now at 2|9|0|0|1. My badges are 20|12|7|1|1|0.

After reading a post about someone's only diamond badge being Ao100 on Nightmare, I realised this it could be a very achievable challenge compared to others.

My first two games perished on level 1. However after getting a bit of luck on the first few levels, I made it to Vampyre and never looked back. I think I used one large health kit from that point, might have touched the chain gun and shotgun a few times (but it wasn't necessary). I didn't bother with any rocket launchers, plasma guns or the BFG 10K that I found. The key pieces of equipment that were useful were the phase devices (might have used 5) and the Hell Staff (lev 58 and maybe 3 times) just to escape trouble.

My chief regret was wasting a nano mod. I couldn't work out whether to take a powered armor, or to nano a cerberus red. In the end I went down the cerberus path and watched in horror as it got demolished. However it really didn't matter as I played nearly all the game with no armor on. The great part with Ao100 is that if you don't like a level, you can drop down without feeling like you're missing a key treasure. There are plenty of levels to get something better.

The hardest levels were nightmare arachnotron caves. They tend to deal so much damage even in berserk mode. Most other damage types can be shrugged and the health recovered.

As I noted above. I had no victories above HNTR so I'd really recommend this for anyone who wants a moderate challenge.

The forum help file suggested I post my victory. I found the file but couldn't work out how to make it look schmick like @Tormuse does.
