Title: D**mRL Run video to try to promote Jupiter Hell
Post by: Shadowfury333 on December 05, 2016, 23:58
I did a stream tonight of D**mRL to try to promote Chaosforge a bit. I don't really know who to spread the word to, so I figured I'd do my normal stream and YouTube thing with the next closest thing to Jupiter Hell. It's also an MGK run on HMP (or at least my best attempt).

Hey, this is pretty cool!  :D  It's nice to see someone else's playing style in action from time to time.  :)  (but let me know if you'd like some strategy tips)  ;)

I was surprised when you made the comment that Chaosforge got a cease and desist letter for naming their game DoomRL!  :o  I just checked and, yeah, the main Chaosforge site lists the game as DRL now.  When did that happen?  :|

Yesterday.  Also this happened:

I'm shocked, SHOCKED that it took this monumental event to get you registered on GitHub! Are you really a programmer or do you just wear that badge at Chaosforge?? (sarcasm).

Actually I noticed that the only pull request was from the guy who just signed up yesterday haha

I hate git.  Because I am old and set in my ways of centralized dictatorship.

IRC has been a lot more active this past week too.  Maybe it'll become a developer hangout or something.  the DoomWorld peeps know too so if a dev over there decides to sign up we'll need some sort of org...

Thanks. I would like some strategy tips, because while I know some of the mistakes that I made throughout the runs, and I've learned a lot from experimenting (like the importance of running, especially for pistol builds), there's bound to be something I'm not even considering. Probably some novel approach to Revenants and Mancubi.

I was surprised when that happened too, and it's also why the thumbnail has crudely photoshopped Doom font asterisks for 'O's. Actually, the C&D was one of the things that pushed me to do another video on DRL (I did one early 2014 as well), along with watching Kornel stream DRL and AliensRL.

As for the open source bit, I'm tempted to test my flinching suggestion from a few months ago. Not sure when I'll have a chance, though.

Cool, I'll make my comments on the actual video so I can put links to specific times that I want to comment on.  Coming soon!  :)

Okay, I made my comment.  :)  It's a little long-winded, but I hope you find it helpful.  :)

...Probably some novel approach to Revenants and Mancubi.

Oh yeah, I forgot to address this.  The best approach is to not let them shoot you.  :D  That probably sounds like a joke, but it's true.  Use cover and corner-shooting or radar-shooting with the shotgun whenever possible, because their rockets hurt!  :|

More specifically, though, it's worth noting that Revenants are bullet-resistant, so the shotgun is a much better choice for dealing with them.

Also, you were questioning (in the video) how Mancubi work...  They have unusual AI in this version of DRL; they fire a burst of three rockets as soon as they see you, and then, a few seconds later, they fire a second burst of three rockets in your direction whether they can see you or not.  (Unless you interrupt the second burst by shooting them)  So if you are unfortunate enough to get shot at by them, take cover, because a second barrage is coming!

Oh, wow. That's good to know about Mancubi. Should I just radar shoot them and hope for the best, or is it possible to see them and have a step away before they see me (assuming HR2 & A-modded armour)?

One tip here - mancubi are slow like a one-legged turtle (80% speed). With SoG3 and HR2 you are about twice as fast as them, so you can fire and retreat from their line of sight before they can fire. Alternatively, knockback is your friend here.

Just be sure not to use the "wait" command, as it _always_ takes 1.0 seconds, no matter your speed bonuses. Moving back and forth is much less dangerous, as your movement is faster.

^ Some good tips from ZicherCZ, there.  :)  Just be sure that when you're dancing back and forth, you do it in a direction perpendicular to where they're coming from, like if they're coming from the west, go back and forth between north and south, so they don't catch you by surprise.

Well, I figured I should make a followup to apply the advice I got, so here it is (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kVOvaqlj5E). I also go on a bit about my weird AutoHotkey setup for movement, but mostly it's just straight play with commentary.
