Pre-0.9.9 / Re: YASD - My best result ever
« on: December 08, 2006, 10:53 »
You can look here for some help , and i agree to this guide. I once entered City of Sculls on Ultra Violence, and despite i survived, and won the game that time, i will never go there again. I spent all my cells on BFG there, and get nothing, because i destroyed almost all reward with BFG. But it's a good source of EXP.

I have now read the guide, thank you very much!

I guess next time I won't enter that stupid City unless I really need the exp (and I have lots of rockets to spend or a BFG:P)

Well, best achievement so far! Nothing impressive, only level 17, but much better than my other characters!

Traits order, if I remember well, went: Reloader -> TaN -> Reloader -> Shottyman -> Hellrunner -> TaN -> Ironman -> Eagle Eye

I decided to go the Shottyman route, because I love the SSG, and it went pretty well, except because I ran out of shells and had to spend lots of plasma even in imps and skulls. However, the Emperor decided I was worthy, so he dropped lots and lots of plasma in my way, so much that I had to drop rockets and damaged armors to carry it all. In fact, so much plasma that I decided to get Eagle Eye to get some advantage of the situation.

But I think I offended Him when I entered the City of Skulls only armed with ~40 shells and lots of plasma, because things were from bad to worst from there. In the City I became surrounded by skulls (oh, suprise), which pierced two of my red armours and made me spend my 3 large med-packs and a small med-pack. I ran out of shells (again) and had to deal with Pain Elementals and skulls with my plasma rifle. Luckily, I survived, and I even got 2 (!) BFGs.

But without health packs, there wasn't much for me to do. I fried some arch-viles and barons with plasma on level 16 and encountered some more shells, but I was running out of armours and health. On level 17, lots and lots of Arachnotrons attacked me at once, so I decided to hide behind some pillars and let them come into melee so they would taste my SSG. Obviously, this cowardice made the Emperor even angrier, because while I killed 2 of those bastards, the other 4 were too far for my shotgun. Trying to survive a bit, I switched to the  plasma rifle and, after 2 or 3 volleys of fire I started running to a Large Health Globe that was like 3 or 4 spaces away. Can you guess if I succesfully picked it up or not? :P

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Stupid me, I didn't remember I had all those phase devices, and I thought I'd switch to the BFG once I had regained my health.

Well, at least I've learned some things:

* I have to look on my inventory more, because I tend to forget what I'm carrying.
* I hate Arachnotrons.
* I hate Arch-viles.
* The City of Skulls is a piece of $%·$.
* The Emperor likes plasma rifles (when I'm going for shotties :P).
* I hate Arachnotrons.

Wow, for not being even a YAVP, it's a long post. ;)

PS: Some advice for beating without much problems the City of Skulls?

I just noticed that there are two keybindings that don't appear on the manual, while they do help a bit with the game. They are:

'x' - Tells you what monsters are on your sight range and their relative position from you.
'X' - Does the same but with items.

Moreover, 'X' appears on the manual as Quit without saving.

They are pretty cool features because you don't need to examine every } to see if it is finally a double shotgun, for example:P. And they might help you notice things otherwise you wouldn't notice.

I think they should be in the manual in-game, at least.

HA! I knew something was up in this forum! Ready the heavy flamers! Burn the heretics, the mutants, the traitors, the aliens! Or else, I shall order Exterminatus upon this forum!

Confess! Bring the other heretics before the Emperor!

Bug Reports / Re: Blocking by barrels in AoB

Kornel=Barrels.

That's so true.

Oh, hey, wait a minute... :P

** On topic:

I think maybe an option to [P]ull barrels might do the trick. It might also come in handy to set some fun traps for the demons on the other modes, too!

Thread hijacking :P

Watch out for who are you trying to burn! ^_^

Well I didn't know she was your girlfriend... But it doesn't change my opinion on the subject. Heretics must be purged! Kornel doing something different to a RL == no way! ;P

How about both interesting gameplay and good graphics? ;]

Well, as long as there's an ASCII mode... :>

I'm not against graphics as long as they don't get in the way. It's just that I prefer the game happening in my head rather than my screen... I can imagine situations better if there are not graphics that force an idea on how something is on my head. I think about RLs as reading an interactive book. Anyway, as long as the game is good (and if it's as good as DooMRL, it'll be great) it really doesn't matter.

Colouring, nice idea!

Quote
1. Should Message Coloring be an ini-file option?
2. If so, should it be turned on as default?
3. Would you like the custom coloring system?

[Yes to all] :P

I agree on what Malek said that needs coloring, but I'd also add colour when walking on lava/slime, and maybe on running out of ammo (for those intense combats)

And perhaps not RL? RL are boring to look at for such amateur as I ;-). Graphics please!!!

HERESY! BURN THE HERETIC!

Seriously, I prefer RL's to other games because they are interesting to play. When I want graphics I just play another kind of game. The thing with RLs is that the effort is concentrated on having a good experience while playing, not while looking at them. ;)

Try to imagine yourself attacking a slow, limping, stiff zombie, that can barely move, much less dodging you. :P

Ok, I see your point:P.

Perhaps the to-hit chance should be higher, at least on aggressive. But since tactics are going to be revamped for the next version... We'll have to wait out and see.

Well, I have had a chainsaw in my own hands and... well, its cumbersome. Keep in mind that the bigger ones might weight over 5 kgs.

Try to imagine yourself with a 5 kg thing that is not primarily designed for combat (even though in Hollywood they try to convince us otherwise) and trying to hit something that is actively trying to NOT let you hit him. It's not like it's a sword, which is designed from the ground up to have maximum length and handling.

What does not sound right, however, is surviving a chainsaw slash:P

Requests For Features / Re: Rooms!!!

Wonderful ideas, Adral!

Thanks!

I've been thinking a bit on this subject, and since the "technology colours" from Doom are yelow and blue, perhaps these special computer rooms should have blue floor, just like some levels on the original, and maybe the walls should also be blue or something like that.

The computers could be yellow, blue o silver '8's (or some other ASCII character, the result would be the same), keeping with the tech-colour scheme. They should be impassable and destructible. Maybe they should have a special ability, for example, when bumping onto them, a random sentence which gives you a clue about something of the game, i.e:

 * The computer reads: Lava overflow reported within the level. //indicating there is a switch which fills the level with lava
 * The computer reads: Warning! Greater demonic lifeforms encountered below. //indicating that in the level below there are B's or O's (or bigger things), for example
 * The computer reads: Weapon research center on this level(or below). //indicating there are special weapons i.e. Advanced Shotgun, Fastload Pistol, etc. on the level indicated

Also, there may be not so useful messages:
 * The computer screen is broken.
 * The computer screen reads: Error e506: communication lost.
 * The computer reads: Memory overflow. Please reboot.

The message should be generated only once, then it repeats itself every time you bump into the computer again.

Imagination is the limit, you know :)

In 1.0 graphics mode of course you will instantly be able to tell different areas apart just by looking at them, but having interesting architecture and the right itmes will do the trick in ASCII.

Well, I hope ASCII mode will not dissappear! I love the ASCII models Kornel added to the descriptions, and I like my RL's with lots of letters! :P

Also, rich architecture will help both versions, I think.

Requests For Features / Re: Rooms!!!

A beneficial room: the armoury:

Code: [Select]
########
#}|...&#
#}|...&#
#####+##
+......#
########

The levers could act as armor repairers or med-kits or both. Or act as a nasty trap, who knows... :>
Monsters should be scattered on the room, but mainly they should be former humans to keep the theme.
Weapons could be random or adapted to the current Dlvl.

Also, I miss very much the tech-inspired rooms that filled the whole Doom on episode 1. I don't know how these could be done, perhaps adding different colors or adding a new tile that represent a computer. Obviously, these rooms should always come equipped with a handy computer map.

In my opinion, these would add to the atmosphere of the Phobos base being a, umm, military base, you know :P

I'm new on this forum, so hello to everyone!

I voted for DiabloRL and Carceri... mainly because I like the ideas behind these RLs the most. Of course I would prefer DoomRL, but I think moving on to another project for a while may be better for DRL :)
