Someone told me that the "Endless" trial actually does have an end on level 666, so I decided to see for myself, and confirmed that to be true.  :)  (With 100% kills on Inferno difficulty!)  :D  Endless Diamond badge too!  WOO!  :D

I've been working on this particular run since...  Mid-March, I think?  It took just over four months from beginning to end, playing a few levels at a time each day.  I did it with a Survivor build, which wouldn't have been my first choice, but it's the first one that took off after a whole bunch of failed attempts with other classes and builds.  (Most of which didn't get further than level 2)

I was helped from the beginning by Inferno difficulty randomly giving me the "lethal" buff, which gave me a 50% damage bonus for the entire game.  (I haven't seen Kornel comment on that, but I suspect it might be unintended;  I sure took advantage of it, though)  :P

The other big help was the AV2 grenade launcher you see in slot 3 which kept me alive in the early game, since it has a "haze" modifier on it, which basically acted as unlimited smoke grenades, for keeping enemies from shooting at me, and was useful enough that I kept it around for the entire game.

My real workhorse weapon, though, was that "Git Gud" rifle (okay, the AWP long rifle, if you prefer)  :P  which I found on level 20 and gets a bonus for each kill, so in a game with as long a timeline as this one, it got up to almost 30,000% crit bonus, and I spent a majority of the game being able to one-shot anything, including charging archmedusae.

I also had a super shotgun with second chambre as backup, which was pretty nice.  Once I got all the damage bonuses from low health, (including a damage bonus from the Kerberos' Heart relic) very little could survive two shots from it, so it was good for getting enemies that were around corners or hiding in smoke or otherwise couldn't be hit reliably with the GG rifle.  :)

I also streamed myself live playing the last six levels, as you can see here.  :)

I've noted before that you have to get really good at killing medusae in this challenge, as evidenced by the fact that it was the number one most common enemy.  This frequently meant I had to tank at least one hit from each of them, so I could do a wait action to guarantee a hit from the GG rifle, but it was very doable.  Other things I noticed:  I found 8 Mk3 manufacturing stations in the whole game, 7 of which were before level 364, and the last being on level 660.  Also, I found 6 uniques in the whole run, all of which were after level 400.  (Gives some interesting insight into RNG distribution)

I'm sure there's plenty more to say about this run, but I can't think of it right now, so I'll just say...  yay!  I've finally finished this thing!  :D

For my 15th platinum badge, I went for Daredevil Platinum. Took a few deaths and a few other runs I Q +Y'd on before I got a starting level that was both doable and gave me enough resources to take on Deimos Lab/Hell's Armory. That second part is important; one run started me with a Lost Soul cave (I didn't even know you could still get those in Deimos on UV), which while very easy to beat with minimal damage, left me gaining only one level and with little ammo nor any armor, leading to me running out of shells in Hell's Armory before half the enemies were even dead, causing a swift demise once I had to try using the Chaingun with no SoB nor EE. When I finally got an ideal starting level that left me in good enough shape for Deimos Lab, it also had an Assault Shotgun and Laser Rifle. With getting such good weapons this early, I didn't dare try releasing the Shamblers (that I had little hope of taking on with not even having Berserker, due to going for a Malicious Blades build). This first run to get past Lab/Armory would prove successful, with the Assault Shotgun and Laser Rifle really helping with keeping me alive until I got MMB, and I would still make heavy use of them even after getting Azrael's Scythe. Unfortunately I didn't find many mods and so couldn't really mod them all out, making going for WK2 a mistake (at least I did get modded Tactical Boots out of it, so it wasn't entirely wasted).

For other notes, I was happy I got City of Skulls, not sure I could have handled the starting Hell Knight ambush in Abyssal Plains with the equipment I had and no Berserker to fall back on. The fight with the Agony Elemental got a bit out of hand, but with some strategic retreats I was able to handle only burning a single Medkit, and got a very nice two Hatred Skulls out of it (letting me beat Unholy Cathedral without a Piercing Knife and being some very good help in Mortuary). Really wanted Halls Of Carnage for the two mods there, but Spider's Lair wasn't bad. Was a bit unsure of tackling Mortuary with a generalist MMB build that lacked especially strong guns, but it went surprisingly well, coming out nearly net equal in Medkits and without burning too much ammo. It certainly helped that 4 Arch-Viles spawned near the start, so I was able to take out over half the Arch-Viles quickly after immediately using my second Hatred Skull. Then Lava Pits spawning instead of Mt. Erebus when I had no radsuits was bad, but thanks to MMB's fire resistance extending to your feet, running with just Protective Boots I found the floor before was enough to reduce lava damage to 1, making it easily doable after using a Phase Device to teleport to one of the islands. After going through an Arachnotron cave, a maze, and a lava flood for the final few floors before the end, Carmack went down without a real fight, netting me Daredevil Platinum.

Overall, Malicious Blades certainly didn't seem optimal for this badge and I may have survived one of the other attempts with a different build, but it worked out at the end and it was pretty fun.

I was just going for only Berserker Platinum at first in this run and wasn't intending to kill everything. The first few attempts that made it past Phobos Base Entry without me hitting Q there didn't make it far once the Hell Knights came, however this attempt got me some very good luck with timely Berserk Packs and Supercharges being available during that awful dlevel 3-5 range. This early powerup luck allowed me to kill all those Hell Knights and Cacodemons on the way to The Chained Court, where maintaining a 100% kill rate is at its most difficult on AoB. I also found a Ballistic Armor on dlevel 5, helping me even farther with killing everything without burning too many resources before I got Vampyre, and made Phobos Lab a lot less painful, as well as ensuring I got very good Cerberus Armor later. With this early luck, I maintained a 100% kill rate throughout the game, netting me Azrael's Scythe, which allowed me to exploit its altfire in The Vaults to get Scavenger Diamond. I forgot Gargulec Cross was a medal you got for finishing with a 100% killrate in AoB on UV and I was one medal short of Heroic Platinum, so seeing them in the mortem at the end was a nice surprise, making me more thankful for that early luck and saving me from having to do another AoB UV run later on for the Gargulec Cross.

Deimos wasn't so nice with the luck though. Deimos Lab had a... Firestorm and Sniper mod, completely useless while I was really hoping to make Antigrav Boots and get infinite durability on my Cerberus Ballistic Armor. Then after I lost my Red Armor early in Deimos and before I could make Cerberus Armor, one level started me in a big open room full of Mancubi with nowhere to run. After one big blast from them, I was left at 16% health, but luckily I had a Homing Phase and nothing was waiting for me at the stairs, so I was able to recover and then clear out the level. I also accidentally built my second pair of Tactical Boots at WK1, so I wasted my chance at getting +25% speed Tactical Boots.

In Hell things went easier. I managed to find an Energy Shield, and combined with some nearby Invulnerability, really helped with clearing Limbo, which I found to be a lot harder than Mortuary when you're stuck to purely melee. Limbo still got dicey though; after clearing the middle and right islands, my Energy Shield was nearly destroyed, and trying to progress through the left islands wasn't working. I kept getting hit into lava, getting harassed by Nightmare Cacos out of reach in lava, and getting perpetually blown away by Mancubi and Revenants. I ended up fleeing to one of the corners on the right islands and huddling there waiting for all the enemies to come to me, killing them each one at a time until I finally finished them all. The rest of the run was smooth sailing after that.

I was playing a Fireangel build for fun, but realized that I could take advantage of the free rocket jumps to get past Phobos Anomaly damageless without having to get lucky with a Phase Device, and then Cybie is completely free with the requisite Dodgemaster (alongside Fireangel ensuring any splash if I get cornered near walls won't hurt me either). The first run I got past Anomaly without damage, but then got killed by the Shamblers in Deimos Lab (trying to fight them without having a Focused Double Shotgun nor Tactical Rocket Launcher turned out to be a very bad idea). The second run I got past Anomaly damageless again, and then got to Cybie this time, where he was effortlessly beaten without damage, netting Gatekeeper Diamond. I then completed the rest of the run for a full win.

Of particularly notable events, I found an Assault Shotgun on dlevel 5, which was amazing, never found one that early before. The luck got cruelly balanced out however by not finding a single Double Shotgun until Hell, so no Focused Double Shotgun for most of the run. Then I also ran into a big ammo crunch at the end, having to resort to killing individual Lost Souls with the Nuclear BFG in The Lava Pits to desperately conserve my shells. But I managed to get through with enough ammo at the end to finish off Carmack.

Nothing special about this run, was just a run for fun when the schematics for Nanofiber Skin Armor dropped on Hell's Armory. This would normally annoy me, but that was the last assembly I never made nor found the schematics for prior, so this run netted me Technician Platinum and Technician Diamond. I know Technician Diamond is probably the least impressive Diamond badge, but thought to post this in case the Badge Hunters thread ever gets updated. I did get exceptional luck with finding both Duelist Armor and Phaseshift Boots, especially nice when doing a MAD build so I wasn't painfully slow during it. Also despite the schematics drop, I found two random Onyx mods later. Unfortunately they came after I already modded the Duelist Armor and MAD means no Whizkid, so I ended up slapping one on a Red Armor, and then the other on Gothic Boots late in the run for the hell of it because I found nothing else worthwhile to use it on. Ended up missing out on a full win when the Nuclear BFG got blown up in Limbo and I couldn't find another nuke before reaching Dis, oh well.

I generally don't enjoy playing standard games compared to fun challenges, and I especially don't enjoy being forced to go through every bonus level, which is why I've procrastinated this badge for so long. After messing around with silly builds, I decided to play something more seriously and one-tried this badge. Of course though, this was due to some of the most insane luck I could have asked for. Since this is my first time earning this badge, I wanted to post the mortem.

I found Duelist Armor super early into the game, although I had rolled Phobos Lab:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I figured I had enough movement speed to lure the Nightmare Demons safely:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And indeed I did:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

After Phobos, I rolled Hell's Armory which was also really nice. Had I rolled Deimos Lab, I was planning to use the trick where you skip the Shamblers but still conquer the level:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found Plasma Shotgun inside, meaning I could swap out my rockets which was really nice:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I unfortunately got hit by the Shambler just before the final hit, but the vault was still very lucky!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also had Cerberus Boots in Mod Pack form in my inventory, so I would start working towards Whizkid.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And then the good luck went crazy with a Nano Pack on Deimos 2!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My plan for this was going to be Nanomanufacture Plasma Rifle, which would significantly help with ammo management, having a great weapon, and attacking faster without needing to reload!

I also noticed that two of the needed Bulk Packs were also on this floor!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Rolling The Wall was also nice:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I actually almost botched my run, not realizing how much power was needed to bust through the wall with my Plasma Shotgun. I was very lucky I hadn't put in my Nano Pack into my Plasma Rifle yet:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

From here, the rest was easy:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Of the level pair rolls, this was the one I dreaded the most:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I'll be honest, I have never seriously played Abyssal Plains on Ultra-Violence difficulty, and I was not at all ready for how many Hell Knights there were. I almost died despite the power I had, but the Hell Staff put me in a nice position to defend:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

On Deimos 6, I found a Firestorm Pack! This would be awesome to finish up my main weapon:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And on the same floor, I found the last Bulk Pack I needed!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

An absurd weapon to have at this point in the game:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

AND I FOUND ANOTHER ONYX PACK AND A NUKE ON THE SAME FLOOR!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This was absolutely insane! I decided I'd use the extra Onyx Pack for my Duelist Armor when I need to be moving fast, and I'd hang onto the Nuke if I happened to find Invulnerability before a bonus level, particularly Limbo/The Mortuary.

On the next floor, I also found another Agility Pack to add more to my Duelist Armor. On the level-up, I was a bit split to go either Hellrunner 3 or Brute 1, but I was feeling confident Hellrunner 3 was the right choice.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I also found a Bulk Pack for Chainsaw. I had planned to make Piercing Chainsaw, but all the crazy finds earlier side-tracked me for other uses. Fortunately, this is the best choice for single Mod Packs:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Taking off Cerberus Boots, I was looking pretty fast and cheesed the Angel of Death:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Thankfully, I rolled Limbo:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Nearby was an Agility Pack to boost up the speed of my Red Armor, which could be important:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I had a Berserk Pack nearby, and used an Envirosuit, giving my all the protection I needed while melting the Archviles back:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Once I controlled the centre, I just had to slowly pick off the enemies around. From this point, it was my game to win:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

My inventory was looking nice too:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found an Invulnerability and decided to use my Nuke on the next floor:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As it turns out, it was a pretty good floor to nuke too:

And the rest of the game was more melting away all the enemies. I had the opportunity to go for a full win, but I opted not to.

Here's the mortem:

Happy to have earned this badge! I'm now at 24/26 for Platinum Badges, only missing Strongman and Demonic because like Elite, I don't really enjoy playing standard games, but I'm feeling more obligated to get them done now.

Bullet Dance doesn't tend to get a lot of love, so I decided to YAAM a 666 game using it. Secret diamond in the rough? Correctly viewed as garbage? Maybe it's just mediocre?

Once fully decked out, Bullet Dance can yield some serious damage as it benefits from both Son of a Bitch and Son of a Gun, giving it a nice damage edge over Minigun. You can also fire in functionally the fastest speed possible, meaning that most enemies don't budge at all while you can take your time drilling them. Hot starts are never a concern because of their natural delay and the damage being outputted, you can clear everything before they can do anything back. Most enemies will die in one or two bursts, and even Cyberdemons only tend to take four.

Ammo is not too much of a concern since most of the shots tend to be ammo-efficient so long as you can make most of your hits. You can also use aimed shots to functionally "turn off" Bullet Dance, and also use single reload to keep one weapon empty. Grammaton Cleric Beretta, Anti-Freak Jackal, and Trigun are all decent options while working towards Nanomanufacture Combat Pistols, ideally finished with Sniper Packs.

And that's about the end of the good.

Bullet Dance is very viable end-game, but getting started is rough. Until you have several levels into Son of a Gun and ideally something better than regular Pistols, you're effectively playing with a slightly better Chaingun. Bullet damage also is one of the worst types as it has none of the benefits that Fire, Plasma, or Acid do, and is commonly resisted by some enemies, in particular Revenants, but also by anything picking up many different armors throughout each level. A few times, I had a Baron wearing a Gothic Armor who mostly shut down all of my damage. Fortunately, it's still trivial to kill everything.

Like other rapid-fires, Bullet Dance has significant disadvantages compared to Shotguns, BFGs, and explosives. To be able to hit enemies, you have to be aiming fairly bang-on to their positions, and they won't always be nicely aligned at a straight angle. After a few hits, you'll often knockback an enemy out of your line of fire and need to re-adjust. Rapid-fire is also awful at clearing groups since you have no area of effect damage and no piercing, meaning enemies clumped in the back have to get cut through to get to. Clearing floors can be extremely slow.

And what might make Bullet Dance terrible indirectly is all the traits it blocks. Eagle Eye blocked means that you can't pump up accuracy, which is a massive problem for a rapid-fire that is intended to be ammo efficient. Granted, most pistol weapons have decent accuracy, but even end-game setups tend to not reach maximum accuracy and hurts the damage potential and also the reliability. With Eagle Eye blocked, Intuition also is blocked, and holy shit was this awful to play without it. Clearing floors with having to hunt down enemies is a huge slog, especially with Archviles sneaking by, Nightmare Demons silently hiding, easily missing monsters that could have been detected, and firing blindly into the void after knocking back enemies out of line of fire. Not being able to beeline for Computer Maps that could be visible also slows down scouting floors significantly, and I also rarely ever used levers which may have been helpful at times.

Furthermore, Hellrunner and Dodgemaster are blocked, which grinds you down to a halt. Firing is ridiculously fast, but any other sort of action often results in enemies quickly shifting around and occasionally getting double attacks in. This also impacts trying to adjust positioning for firing after knockbacking for better angles, so generally I would just stay in place and fire blindly.

The worst floors were Agony Elemental caves, which would take forever because of such poor crowd control. I also think the floors starting with nukes would have been very difficult to fully clear if the difficulty was Ultra-Violence.

The act of needing to dual reload constantly, using aimed shot early on, and juggling ammo to control it effectively also slows down gameplay a lot. Bullet Dance is viable but has horrible quality of life.

I stuck with Inquisitor set, but Phaseshift set can be a decent alternative to compensate for lack of Hellrunner, but this will require 3 Nano Packs to max out the build. I also opted out of putting points into Reloader since I intended to use Nanomanufacture Combat Pistols and made better use of the trait points at the cost of a harder start.

---

On this particular game I had horrendously bad luck with Nano Packs, such that I didn't find my first one until floor 198, and then never found a second one, meaning I never properly completed my build. It didn't matter since I still melted everything and usually would be lazy and just fire one Nanomanufacture Combat Pistol so I didn't have to keep reloading. My general strategy was to find an open door and a camping spot, spam Run->Wait, and slowly pick off every enemy.

Throughout this game, I found a total of 10 Onyx Packs:

I also found a total of 7 BFGs / Nuclear BFGs. Simply using Biggest Fucking Gun would have been far better than Combat Pistols, which doesn't speak highly of Bullet Dance.

But only the one Nano Pack, which was also super late too:

Inventory also got interesting for ammo storage throughout the game:

I stopped the silliness at 8 Miniguns, but I did find 2 more later on. They were basically vanity items and literally never got used anyway. As much ammo as it was, it's still quite a long way off infinity and then instead filling my inventory with actually useful items.

Combat Pistols also came in fairly slow with floors 92, 171, and 218. Interestingly, Grammaton Cleric Beretta also showed up on floor 92:

And for some other interesting happenings now.

With high reliance on Run->Wait, most items would get picked up by enemies. This one in particular blew up like a pinata:

I found a Minigun, but it had a guardian:

In conclusion, I give Bullet Dance a solid "At least it's not Entrenchment" out of 10.

Hey, use the development branch of both doomrl and fpc valkyrie - should compile both in 32 and 64 bit without issues.

I had an idea! Could someone else with access to 32-bit Windows compile makewad.exe for me, using the instructions on the github? That's all I need, really. If I had that, I might be able to do the rest myself and start seeing what I can do! Maybe even start adding some content. Been dying to try.

What a game!

This game was meant to be a theorycrafting game for Survivalist, but like a dippy, I forgot to actually plan out the levels to make sure I'd have enough to get it, so I opened with my favorite traits and then realized I was going to miss Son of a Gun 5 if I did literally anything else, so I ended up going Masterless Marine Dualgunner. Honestly, though, my fave! Even got a combat pistol and a nano pack in Deimos Lab! Made myself a Powered Red Armor so I could get rid of a power mod and dump the rest of my armor and make room in my inventory. Ended up being the only armor I needed from there on out!

What I'm getting out of this game is that Survivalist is better in Angel of 100, because the power level of the gunplay was solid, it seriously felt like I was playing HMP, it just couldn't actually finish itself without more level-ups.

Agility mods would not stop dropping. I swear I found like 10 of them. Never got the right combo to finish Cerberus Boots, but hell, a win's a win.

I wanted to save a homing phase device in case Halls of Carnage showed up (it did) but the level prior, my one phase device ended up sending me straight into the two mancubi and baron I was trying to run from, so I had to pop the homer to survive. In spite of not having one, though, I snagged the BFG by the skin of my teeth and cleaned house! The very next turn after picking it up, lava washed over the tile it was on.

Had a crazy idea that I was going to try clearing Limbo even though I had no more ammo for my pistols and barely any for my shotgun because I had a homing phase device and the BFG and plenty of cells and a cell pack. Lucky for me, the opening went well and I gibbed all the corpses in the center while killing the viles, and the homing phase device took me straight to the Nuclear BFG, so now I had the infinite ammo weapon I'd need to fully clear the level. I killed the viles on the east side with the last few bullets in my combat pistol then wiped the rest out with my Nuclear BFG, working my way over slowly.

It was honestly routine at that point. I've cleared Limbo before.

I almost lost the game going through the Lava Pits with only one envirosuit. I tried to run through and medpack spam with my tactical boots once my protective boots got close to melted, but that was a hilariously bad idea as expected, so I homing phase device'd it right out of there, only for the next level to start me in a tiny hellhouse with about 20+ X marks outside the only door. I tried waiting to see if any would leave, but instead they all came right in immediately and I had 30% health. There were mancubi, viles, knights, barons, the works. Lucky for me I had SoG 5 and some heavily modded pistols by then, because I needed all of that firepower just to not die. Eventually the viles showed their faces and I could finally thin the herd until I had an opening to get out with 20% life remaining. But there, just a few tiles away across the street to the north, was a large health globe. Saved! There was even an invulnerability right next to the stairs as well as a nuke. Great! I could get a full win after all!

Could've nuked JC with how much invuln time I had left, but I didn't want to chance it, so I just attacked him normally and won that way. Almost didn't make it though! I still had no healing items, so any damage I took was permanent, and he summoned huge squads of knights.

I'm proud of this win for one thing: it's become abundantly clear to me that I'm casually fully-winning on Ultra-Violence now, even doing silly things like diving into superior Chained Court just for funsies and mods and feeling pretty comfortable with the whole thing. I think that means I'm finally a good player!
