 2 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

After some unsuccessful UV/N! AoI runs (and there were quite a few), I took a shot at AoH UV/100% after hating it for so long. At the suggestion of a guide contributor, I went for Cateye. While I almost always build EE/SoB for this badge, I doubt I would have finished up the master trait without advice: however, I never got far enough for a master trait before, so no harm in building it.

Beginning was rather nice, combat shotty at the veeeery beginning kept me alive long enough to get a few traits for rapid-fire. For the most part, I was lucky enough for enemy spawns not to be ridiculously stacked against me in the first few levels. A very tense but pretty standard early-game.

Level 5 generated Hell's Armory and, at the same time, two Invulnerability Globes near the stairs. Managed to survive through the whole level without using them, which was not easy in the least (only in that level did I actually find a plasma rifle). That made the Armory a great deal easier, managed to run into the center and go to town on the Cacos and a Rev that came out. Cleaned out the rest with rather little damage.

Next level, Cateye pops...in a maze. Must've spent ten minutes alone on that level, being extremely careful not to die against the Barons and Rev and Mancubus. Early on I saw that The Wall generated: at first I thought it'd be insane to try it, but I did have a nice stash of 40 rockets and cells to spare. In addition to Cateye, it seemed plausible to do so without even taking damage. The end result was that I was only hit three times: one Vile-fire, one Baron-ball, and me accidentally misfiring a rocket. All in all, however, it proved well worth the trouble, what with the extra space and missile launcher and tons and TONS of rockets.

After The Wall, I was hit with nothing but Caves, Cities, and an Arena, coincidentally all the level types you want if you're playing Cateye. Combat shotty was used to lure enemies, plasma for damage, and rockets when I was unsure of the situation. A few rough spots (particularly the Arena, Rev/Vile pack is always rough) but I came out on top in every case. Snagged a Cybernetic Armor in a City, decided to save it for Cybie.

Cyberdemon was pretty straightforward, although it really came down to the wire. I didn't want to nuke if I didn't have to, but he dealt a ton of damage and forced me to use up every med-pack I had. Killed him in a nice, dramatic finish of "after this volley he's gonna nail me".

I'm just glad to get this one off my chest: I'd take Runner Gold over Eagerness Gold any day (the latter will come with time, and maybe together with the Platinum/Diamond).

Just wanted to check it out, see if I could find any problems with the special levels (see Bug Reports for what I found). Took about 10 tries or so, and just the 2nd attempt past getting MAc (total YASD on that one, lemme tell ya).

Managed MAc before The Wall, made it pretty easy. Everything up to Phobos Hell was pretty straight-forward, no great items yet but nothing to screw me over, either. Somehow managed three bulk mods right before Halls of Carnage, meaning a quick 220-capacity BFG.

This was my first lava-bath of AoD and, damn, he takes a lot of tiles to go down. I should definitely make sure to have HRx2 next time, just the one didn't cut it. Also, I forgot to bring the chainsaw along for the Lost Souls, so I instead crafted an AT combat knife.

On some floor shortly after Spider's Lair, I picked up a laser rifle and gothic armor, both great finds. Someone mentioned that laser rifle wasn't that good for an MAc run, but I have to disagree after this run: infinite ammo AND nigh-perfect accuracy is a combo that can't be beat. Slap on enough mods (I only had P1T1) and you have a wrecking machine.

Had invulnerability going into Vaults, three phases landed me on the left side every time so I nuked the place with the thermo from Spider's Lair. FYI, Grammaton doesn't work with MAc in any of its modes (TH does for sure, though). Mortuary was cake with laser rifle, BFG and missiles, I didn't even bother running through to a corner. Lava Pits was the same (with running, though) because of three envirosuits. (On the level before I found phaseshift boots and scavenged the armor there, so free lavawalk WEEEEEE.)

Really simple run after UC, glad to get a nice victory for my first day playing DoomRL again.

PS: I have a theory that "clearing" and "completing" levels are two different things. Specifically, nuking a level when it only requires a "clear" is fine, but trying that when you need to "complete" it won't work. (That would explain why Vaults/UC/Mortuary Gold aren't given for nuking, but things like Lava Pits can.) If this proves to be the case, it'll be a nice fix for my guide.

The name speaks for itself. After going through a Conqueror attempt, I took note of all the levels that didn't become either "relatively safe" or otherwise remained "red" (ie, not officially safe). Of all the levels, these four popped out. To be honest, I may have missed checking The Wall: I'll reply when I figure it out for sure.

If Conqueror Badge isn't procing, it is probably because these aren't going blue.

Man, this shouldn't have taken as many tries as it did.  After MFa it's always just a run for the stairs (and yet I somehow managed to collect three levels on the way).  Cybie takes a lot, I noticed: DM + MFa makes him cake as long as you have something that deals damage (in my case, a spare RL and three stacks).

And all this for a Gold, too.  Bleh.  AoLT is going to be even more annoying, I'm sure (which is also a Gold), but at least there I can do Ammochain pretty easily.

Was close on both winning at the 80% goal.  Jackhammer would've been useful earlier but really helped clean out most of Phobos Hell.  On the other hand, it really ate up shells.  As much as I prefer having MFa for Nightmare, I think I'm gonna need MAD to pull this off.  Losing Finesse AND Hellrunner is really gonna be a problem.  Now if Jackhammer were moddable (those power mods on the double were sitting in my inventory until Cybie) then I would have pulled off the Platinum at least.  Well, either that or just avoiding level 24 entirely, I had enough shells for the Arena otherwise.  Had I known I wasn't going to hit 80% anyway (HINT HINT, make this viewable during the game) I'd have the Plat now.

City of Skulls was great for upping the count, but too many maze levels had to be avoided to make up for the kill%.  This loss goes to poor map generation, basically.  Getting the Railgun was like a kick in the crotch, and Malek's armor so late could only help so much.  However, that + HR(x2) + agi boots + running gave me 0.33 MS, which is completely amazing.

EDIT: Oh right, I also killed just enough to hit Archvile rank.  Woo...

Bug Reports / Berserker "zerk armor" bug

I'm just adding this topic because there doesn't actually appear to be a topic for reports on the subject.  Although I don't have a complete solution, I have learned a few things regarding the problem:

- The obvious: it only bugs when zerk armor is gained through the Berserker trait.  Berserk Packs have not been known to cause this bug.
- Adding to the counter does not resolve the issue as long as your zerk armor is currently bugged.  That is, trying to "go berserk" while already berserked (with the bug in play) will not un-bug the armor problem; this includes using Berserk Packs.
- Bugging does not hold for a particular game; berserking on separate occasions through the use of Berserker may or may not bug the armor, regardless of whether or not it has bugged on a previous use.

Things to check:
- Do ANY of the benefits for berserk work under this condition?  Unfortunately, berserk speed doesn't actively modify your movement/firing/melee/etc stats to reflect the berserk state, but this can still be verified by comparing the relative action speed of other monsters in your view.  Also, berserking massively increases melee damage, so if you aren't one-hitting just about everything, there's a problem.
- What has happened on the same turn as berserking when the bug occurred?  Knockback, non-local enemy death (e.g., death by terrain or splash), spawning, loss of health, tactic (cautious etc.), enemy reloading/attacking/moving?  Considering no one have really pinpointed where it may be coming from, trying to isolate what can be happening would be a good idea.

Some of the mods are a good place to start: Restless and Invasion carry some powerful melee weapons and fast levels, so it's easy to reach berserk mode in these games.

I single-load the double shotgun: 30182 -> 30202.

The Wiki claims this should only take 1.0 second (or 10 turns).  I mean, sure, no one ever seems to actually use it, but I'll be damned if someone get punished for trying it out.

Currently the rewards for clearing Spider's Lair are quite poor: red armor, plasteel boots, and a nuke?  As cool as the guaranteed nuke is, swiping the nuclear BFG in the Mortuary is a lot easier for most players on UV/N! to get a full win.  You'll get a bunch of plasma, sure, but that's assuming you can even carry it around (not to mention half of runs that use plasma are MAc and therefore do not need it).  I suggest that clearing out the Spider's Lair makes it so that cave levels cannot spawn Arachnotrons, essentially turning the Lair into a gamble on whether or not you expect to see/have trouble with those hellish caves.  Either this would remove caves from the roster entirely, or force Cacodemons (and Pain Elementals for UV/N! on the really low floors) where Arachnotrons would normally spawn.

It has plenty of sensibility involved: Spider's Lair is where the Arachnotrons come from, so naturally destroying it would get rid of all their ilk.  If possible, the removal of all Arachnotrons entirely (that is, on all subsequent floors) is also an option, though that might be harder to work out.  If this reward is TOO good, we could make it so that Arachnotrons have a low chance of being added to the level (only one or two at a time) every minute, making it a semi-Mortuary.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.1] Enemy telefrag = Me Out of Place?

My guess as to this message is that a monster teleported (note I haven't been anywhere near the only teleporter on the map) and died due to an incompatible teleport (or killed another monster in the process).  The fact that "You feel out of place" appears is probably bug-related.  After playing through the level, I was able to determine the teleporter output tile, which was not on the same tile as the one I'm on in the picture.

Plasma rifle clearly displays (and shoots) eight shots per volley, despite the Sniper mod pack being the only mod on it.  The ammo depletion from the weapon was caused before the mod pack was added.

Hellgate on N! either needs a nerf or a headstart or SOMETHING.  I was only trying to reach the door using the supplies given at the beginning of the level and I got absolutely slaughtered running it.  The only other option I can think of is MGK, but you really want SoaB for knockback and outright damage against all those monsters.

That ridiculously high kill percentage is due, in part, to my inability to ever find the stairs on maze levels.  Had to kill 'em one and a half times through before I got to that one blank tile I missed.  All in all in was a good run, but without a homing phase you're as good as dead at Hellgate.

A pretty easy Platinum if you ask me.  Could have just been some really good luck, but I found that a speed-shotty build kills everything rather quickly.  Plus, instead of having MAD for damage you can just mod your gun (since Finesse is a must anyway).  There were several occasions that I wanted to test if having an invuln globe lets you survive through the 5-minute nuke: I assume you do, but after the first 10 floors I didn't want to risk it.

Don't ask me why I did the Mortuary, it wasn't a very good idea.  There was BFG but I only came in with about 5 shots' worth.  I burned a lot of large med-packs to meet the five minute limit.

Plasma shotgun kills Cybie surprisingly quickly, only took about 15 shots in total.  To be honest, I almost died at one point (54% -> 6%) but at that point I just played it safe; there's really no reason to die if you have DM.  I can write up the Quartermaster badges (B/S/P at least) with confidence now.

EDIT: Holy shit, I accidentally put "Diamond" in the title instead of "Plantinum."  Good thing I caught it quick.

 23 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
 And 10 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
 Is he immortal? 17 souls claim to have killed him...
 1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
 14 killed the bastard and survived.
 2 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

This is yet another lucky victory, brought to you by the players of Angel of Pacifism.  Chained Court kept me alive a while, and a few floors later I found double invulns.  I was rarely not powered by one or the other at any point in the run.

Funny stuff:

- Berserking through (yes, THROUGH) four Viles and six Revs.  Tried to kill as many through splash at the same time.
- Hellgate's a REAL pain, man.  Though I was smart not to use my phase there, it really came in handy two levels later.
- Three caves at the end in a row: two arach (not TOO bad, the stairs were relatively accessible and Iro3 TaN3 keeps one alive fairly well) and a pain elemental.  The last one in particular I was really sweating, 'cause there's no way to kill lost souls in a Pacifism run, but the stairs were close enough before the level was flooded.

Yeah, I found a Jackhammer, go figure.  I also found a Cleaver on an earlier run, as the RNG refuses to break the standard of me finding weapons when they're impossible to use.

Welcome to the Badges Guide thread! This is where I post the latest version of my guide (currently v2.1) so that players can understand the various underpinnings of the many, many badges that exist in DoomRL. Beginners and veterans alike may realize a thing or two after looking through it (and it is quite a read), so if you're having any trouble with badges at all, take a look.

If you find that some of the information is lacking or inaccurate, please post in the thread and let me know what the issue is. I'll be happy to make any corrections and attribute those who point them out.

Sweet, sweet victory.  A lot of it went rather well...plenty of fortunate stair-finds, some less fortunate.  As it is, however, Ammochain keeps you alive without the worries of ammo, so you can wait until there's an opening.

- Hellgate started with half a berserk left, so I simply shot the door down on the other side and bolted it; killed everything near the door, opened the second wall, and spammed plasma into the cubby holes.  Worked out really well, my red armor was only half-dead at the end.
- Surprisingly, only three caves: two Cacos at the very beginning (JUST after Chained Court, woo) and one Arach on 24, at which point I had DM and plenty of survivability.

Mortuary...oh man, what a nightmare.  I had no idea the corpses that spawned with the level ALSO respawned like normal.  That's the only reason I have 70%, by the way...should probably be more like 45-55.  I was lucky enough to have a near-full berserk going on, so I managed to clear the right side and grab the nuclear BFG (Halls of Carnage...shottys hurt way too much to get through there) and spent a good ten minutes carefully trying to clear out as many corpses as possible with BFG/RL while still keeping myself alive with plasma volleys. Manucbi shots still hurt 60% through red armor, so it's dangerous, but eventually I managed to finish up, grab the armor (RIGHT next to me, thank God) and get the hell outta there before they kept respawning.  And they DO keep respawning even after it's over there.

Anyway, just happy on my first Diamond.  In my opinion, this is one of the...um...less impossible ones due to relying less on luck and more on sound planning and tactics.
