I'm always ready to step up and torch someone more skilled and/or talented than me.There, fixed. :P
Vorbis version?I think the FLAC version would be more useful.
@Simon-v I'm not that much worried about compression quality - it's more about using the proper format, not the icky yucky mp3 ;-)And that's why I suggested FLAC -- because we hear what Simon-v heard, bit for bit, without worrying if any artifacts came in or if the MIDI patches used were different.
note: timidity can output direct;y do vorbis and flac.
note2: I downloaded the vorbis ver, and after that I downloaded the midi file to check it it plays any differently on my soundcard (SB Live) and it is different ;-) The drums are more "visible", and it's 20 seconds longer (wtf?!) . Check it out ? http://www.sendspace.com/file/m5ytop
It's a great track and a perfect fit but I have one question, is there any way that the end could be edited to cleanly loop?
Surely one cannot be expected to craft nothing but masterpieces all the time...Keep on crafting! A masterpiece will eventually appear! =D
Simon-v - the MIDI file itself is changed? Or only the renderings? The MIDI was changed (mostly channel panning and loudness tweaks). I expect the renderings to be prepared and re-uploaded later tonight.
Admittedly, there is a small split-second gap at the very end of the MP3 version that prevents it from looping perfectly. The OGG and FLAC versions seem to be unaffected. I'm not sure what to do with this, except joining the "bleh, MP3" choir in the back row right over there. Perhaps i am going to release an "album" version someday that will feature seamless looping, extended length and a proper fade-out. Someday.Okay, so here is what I think happened. The mp3 format has a bit reservoir, and there's a buffer of bits that are unused by default. That's why true "gapless" playing is notorious, since there's always that spare bit capacity that needs to be flushed out. Depending on the audio player used, you may have an option of "gapless" playback that you can use to get the nice loop.
I like it! Would be better with some higher quality instrument samples though.Would you kindly point me towards said "higher quality instrument samples"?
Would you kindly point me towards said "higher quality instrument samples"?For some reason, high quality sounds are a real bitch to find without spending gazillions of bucks. :|
All joking aside this is far from your best work, I find it much repetitive.True, it's repetitive, but then most music put together for games is, unless there's a boss fight or something big story development.
It's kinda eerie, which made me think of the mortuary more than the lava pits. The foreboding feeling strikes me as appropriate given how close to L25 the pits spawn. The tension is good. I'd say it was fine.
(Our apologies to thelaptop for taking over his thread and driving him out of business! :P )/me shrugs

I like them, but I think they sound too much like the UC and DoomRL themes, particularly parts 1-2.I wanted to create a feeling of deja vu when you reach both the Arena and UC, and the music is supposed to escalate as you overcome wave after wave of the Arena.
Part 1's silences also sound a bit forced.
Is it currently possible to use them all in the Arena or would it have to be Arena/CC/TheOtherPlace?Afraid not, but hopefully The Kornel will implement it in the first beta of 0.9.9.5. I would disrecommend using them for different levels, though, as the results will be unpredictable.
edit: well, they made me want to hear UC theme again, and listening to that I wonder why I don't play melee more often :) Is there any Contra influence in that one (2:24, and a similar bit earlier)? Not that i know of (and i specifically went and listened to every Contra track to make sure). Contra kicks ass, though.
I really like The Brick Song. Something Wicked is still my personal favorite, but this is pretty high up on my list (especially the non-midi versions; the percussion seems louder on my system in the midi version).Thank you for the kind words. They are always welcome.
Can I ask what software you use to make your music? I've wanted to try my hand at music for a long time, but I haven't been willing to spend any money :xThis comes up fairly often. I guess i should make a FAQ entry or something.
My favorites are the Unholy Cathedral, Something Wicked, and the Brick Song.
I also like Dark Secrets. What special level is this for?
It sounds really great. I would have like it for Walls of Ice!
Without the usual long preambles (see previous posts if you wish to see what they were like) and completely missing the DoomRL 0.9.9.6G release, i present my misplaced attempt at the theme for The Vaults, aptly named Dark Secrets, for what happens to be peer review.
Of exactly one person.
Pity he won't be able to do it for a while.
(More details are to be found in the first post (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,3446.msg29967.html#msg29967)).
A fair warning: most of this track is "ambient", and there is some repetition. Some people find this sort of stuff "uninteresting". I can't help you with that, so just crank up the music volume, sit back and enjoy the ride while doing something else (like killing the resident mancubi and arkh-viles, for example).
I've been wanting to try making some music of my own, and I was wondering what program you use. I distinctly recall you answering this very question somewhere, but it's not in this topic...

My actual requirements are fairly simple. I need a MIDI sequencer of some sorts that can do some kinds of effects, a MIDI player/renderer that can write to WAV and a collection of high-quality samples for it. For a while now, these requirements were satisfied by TuxGuitar (which behaves a whole lot like GuitarPro (or so i heard), and also provides the benefit of being able to verify offhand that the composition will be playable on real-world instruments), FluidSynth for the rendering and Frank Wen's Fluid, release 3 as the soundfont.
Truth to be told, you don't need any kind of awesome software to create; All you need is enough inspiration and persistence to make a 30-second, four-instrument loop that doesn't suck. Later, when you improve so much that you grow out of your tools, you will know what you need to replace them with.

Later, when you improve so much that you grow out of your tools, you will know what you need to replace them with. The problem with that (and the reason for asking) is that I've never had the first idea what programs are worth using even to start with. Yeah, one could test their look with a random program from a Google search, but finding a program doesn't necessarily mean you'll find one that's worth fucking around with; if you have no experience with something, you're not going to have the first clue what is and is not necessary for adequate results.
It *was* in this topic? Weird. Could've sworn I read through every post. Clearly not. Thanks for digging it up.It can be difficult to find one that's featured and not buggy, especially if you're looking for open-source stuff. There's quite a few projects, but most of them seem to be version 0.x. Despite asking this myself a while back, I never got too heavy into the music composition stuff.

...gave it to my little sister for her birthday yesterday (she loves the music from the game).Oh my goodness! That is so sweet of you!
Good day, subscribers.
Today is a special day. Today, a new track, one that has been in production forever due to REAL LIFE, finally sees the light of day (or night, if you're in that kind of time zone).
I call it... Dark.
It also signifies the beginning of a new album, the one to follow Doom The Roguelike: The Album, titled simply "Aftermath".
You can get the track from the album page at http://simonvolpert.com/music/am/
Here's the description from the album page:
> Originally, this track was intended for AliensRL, another game made by ChaosForge.
> AliensRL is not DoomRL. It has a different dynamic. In DoomRL you run around guns-a-blazing and can reasonably hope to be able to wipe out everything that is foolish enough to stand in your way. In AliensRL, you are alone, up against overwhelming force that will have no difficulty to wipe the floor with you many times over, a swarm that will utterly demolish you if you attract too much attention. Your main tactics are evasion and stealth, as you try to gather just about enough weapons, ammo and items to survive the next few fights.
> In AliensRL, the game wants you to be paranoid. My idea was to help a little.
> The style of the music reflects this dynamic. It is slow, dark, ambient, with sounds and noises sprinkled here and there. I knew i am doing something right when the following happened:
>
>> http://twitter.com/statuses/306674315036880897/
>> Wed Feb 27 07:57:09 +000>> Prolonged listening to the track i'm working on is giving me auditory hallucinations. Perfect!
>
> Then, life happened, and the project got put on hold. I only returned to it when a switch in the music production software provoked me to examine my drafts again; As it happens, a few tweaks here and there, and the track seemed good enough to me to be released on its own."
Enjoy!
It felt like a great 'game over' music, which is correct most times I'm at the title screen.

It seems that i've uploaded a broken file; Now i'm counting the seconds untill i get to fix it, resignedly waiting for someone to point it out to me, and half-hoping and half-fearing that nobody does.
