General Discussion / Re: Design Rant : Inventory
« on: January 29, 2014, 01:43 »
This is a pretty valid point! For a moment I wanted to immediately go with it, however, there's another problem -- what about addon slots? Things like mods, or expansion elements for armor? There'll be no easy way to see what you're currently packing.
Just show them on top of the moddable item.
If you can add one mod to an armor, the armor will normally show a transparent smaller slot on top of the armor image and if it's already modded, it will just show the mod icon instead.

Discussion / Re: Whizkid, Modpack Rarity, and Assemblies
« on: October 02, 2013, 06:47 »
I don't think I've ever used Scavenger outside of Ao100 as it always felt too RNG dependent to me.

Even on Ao100 I pretty much used it so I could eventually complete the assembly list, not because it felt useful on its own.

Discussion / Re: Oh dragonslayer why do you taunt me
« on: May 03, 2013, 04:09 »
I've seen DS only once. And that was before I even knew there's some trick to picking it up.
I saw the DS, couldn't pick it up and assumed I didn't have the correct traits and moved on. And only went to check the wiki after I'd finished the game.

Had I known DS was special, I'd have spent a lot more time trying to wield it...

Modding / Re: DukeRL
« on: December 12, 2012, 10:05 »
Oo, I really need to dig up Duke 3D again so I can better comment on this thread.

I used to love the game but it's been ages since I last played it... but I'd definitely play DukeRL, that much is certain.

I play mostly on HTNR because most of the time I'm playing to get the remaining badges.  As I still have a lot of Silver and Gold badges missing HNTR offers the best odds to get them.

If I happen to be playing just for fun then I may take HMP but UV is still too hard for me.

6
I'd certainly appreciate this option as well.

I don't want to wake the kids and I don't really want to go digging for headphones just for this.

Currently I play with music volume really low and sound volume low but just loud enough that I can tell apart shotgun sounds and monster wails. This is still a bit awkward in practice so having the sounds optionally as text would be a big improvement.

7
Entered the Vaults with a bunch of phase devices in inventory, decided to attempt Scavenger Platinum - and forgot I was playing AoMC.

Yes, I did happen to phase in. Yes, I did get promptly splattered all over the walls.

Hell's arena: "Fair play meant nothing to him."
Or perhaps
Hell's Arena: "When the simplest way to win was not to play."

0.9.9.6 / Re: [M|86%|YAVP] Biggest Fucking Gun
« on: June 20, 2012, 14:44 »
Yeah, that certainly did cross my mind but at that point I just wanted to get a chance to use it before getting killed :D

....aand looks like the RNG love didn't last.
On my next attempt at getting the two remaining assemblies (Ao100 Scavenger run) the first 27 levels didn't have ANY uniques or exotics. By the time I got killed on level 38 I still hadn't seen any uniques and the 3 exotics I did find (blood skull, assault shotgun, combat translocator) only gave me one agility and one sniper mod pack. Argh.

184 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 155 of those were killed.
4 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 3 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 22 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
3 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
16 killed the bitch and survived.
3 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

As I'm about 250 arch-vile kills and 5000 total kills short of hitting Arch-Vile and most of the Platinum requirements looked way beyond my reach (I've never gotten past level 10 on UV), I figured my best shot at gaining a rank would be getting Technician Platinum which meant two more advanced assemblies.
So I went for a Scavenger build and for once it was actually useful.

Most of the game went by pretty uneventfully, using shotguns and rocket launcher / missile launcher to clear the enemies with the help of Int2.

Then Hell Armory gave me the missing mod pack for the Fireshield and although I never got the missing piece for building the last remaining advanced assembly (Antigrav Boots), disassembling the Trigun on level 18 gave me the last ingredient for something else - the Biggest Fucking Gun!
As this was the first time I've ever gotten my hands on that weapon and I was a bit low on ammo at that point, I pretty much ran through the remaining levels to get a chance to test my new toy on a proper target.
And boy, did it work! Just two blasts and the victory was mine!

Now I'm only one advanced assembly short of Technician Platinum and one more master assembly short of Technician Diamond...

New medal suggestion:

Fallout Gold Cross - nuked at least three levels.
Fallout Platinum Cross - nuked at least six levels.
Klearer of Hell - nuked at least twelve levels.
I'd suggest Klear Cross.
(Or maybe Fallout Klear Cross)

I think it was mid-Hell, and I run across a Thermonuclear Bomb sitting on the ground. My immediate thought was: "Heeeyyy. I could use that to clinch a partial victory." The fact that I was an Impatient marine didn't quite click until....
Been there, done that. I always keep forgetting which challenge I'm playing...

Clearly speaking: stupid thing is pressing 'f' when you just need 'SHIFT+M'
HUH?

I never even knew about SHIFT+M.

...ah. Looks like that quickkey is only in the keybindings.lua file, not in the manual. And the same goes for Wiki as well, the regular Keybindings page does not mention it but the keybindings.lua page does.

No wonder I never noticed it.

I'd appreciate not having the message buffer filled up with "You need to taste blood!"
This.

Actually, why do we even have "You need to taste blood" shown repeatedly at all?
It's not like the player won't notice the berserk effect otherwise...

Requests For Features / Re: Config.lua options
« on: May 07, 2012, 01:55 »
Can we bring back the option to set "InvMenuStyle" in the config.lua file please?  I got spoiled by the ability to set it to "CHOICE" in 0.9.9.5 and I really miss it.  I just lost a very promising game, in part, because I wasted my only phase device because I accidentally pushed I and O at the same time.  :(
Hmm... another solution be to add a small 'dead time' after opening the inventory so that any button presses that happen immediately afterwards would just be ignored.

That should solve the problem of accidentally pressing multiple buttons but would still allow the inventory be used with letters.
