Title: Yet another PBF. More gun!
Post by: Xander Morhaime on December 29, 2009, 19:20
This one's an idea I've had kicking around for a while... a roleplaying campaign based in the Crusader: No Remorse / No Regret universe. Originally I'd thought to use D20 Modern for it, but since discovering Traveller, I've come to realise this system would fit much better.

The campaign will revolve a lot more around fighting in one way or another, though I'll be doing my best to spice it up and keep it interesting. The characters would either be a WEC hit squad (not likely, given how keen the average player is to follow orders) or a Resistance strike team (more likely - while there are still orders somewhere along the way, the fighters generally get more liberty in how they achieve their objectives). There'll be guns, explosions, more guns, explosives, even more guns, and some robots thrown in for good measure.

Right now I'm probing around for any interest. Matters such as character generation method, gear, which side of the conflict the party will be on, that'll be sorted out once there's enough of an interest to warrant starting up the whole thing.

I'm game to try my first PBF, unless you want someone more skilled at this.

Do you have links to the material/rule books that you'll be using?

Never crossed with Crusader: No Remorse / No Regret things, if I'll be in, I'll try to find something.

Anyway, I'm interested in P-ingBF

I'd happily gun something down. A hundred times. Pick me.

Hey, that's not a bad idea.

What do you think, K?

Going back to the matter of character creation: while I encourage rolling a random character, I realise some might find it too confusing or too time-consuming... therefore, I'm allowing the use of the Point Allocation method for creation, alongside the classic method. Bear in mind, however, that the characters in quesiton should NOT be designed to be absolute killers in combat. You're starting out as fresh meat in the grinder, so to speak, and so I will look far more favourably at characters with a more civilian background. Do not fear, you will all receive basic combat training beforehand.

I will also appreciate character ideas to be run past me before being added to the OOC thread. You can submit ideas by PM on the forum or over IRC.

I haven't quite decided yet who'll be taking part - I think I'd prefer a limit of, say, four characters, though I can keep others on standby in case of, ahem, "mishaps" on mission. I'm also willing to give new players a chance to try out the PBF format. Right now, though, waiting for those character ideas.

Speaking of which, try to limit yourselves to three terms. Kind of hard to be young and idealistic when you're pushing 40, eh?

A few more notes on character creation:

Since the vast majority of humanity is still on Earth in this setting, instead of a Homeworld we have a Home Region characteristic. Thus, you might pick Fluid Oceans if you grew up in a coastal city, Garden or Agricultural if you come from a forested or farming region, High Population if you're from the major cities, High Tech if your family had access to the comforts the WEC provided or Low Tech if you lived in the slums, likewise for Rich and Poor... I'm sure you can manage to work the general principle of it out on your own. :]

This bears explaining: if a skill has "(any)" next to its name, that generally means you should pick a specialisation for it when you take it. That doesn't mean you must take a new one each time the option crops up - feel free to specialise.

On a related note: the general suggested specialisation of Heavy Weapons is Launcher; it'll be the sort you'll be seeing most often. For Gun Combat, I've decided to group all energy weapons into one specialisation, but aside from that just go with what the book says. :]

Equipment. You'll generally be receiving a "standard issue" package at the start of the campaign, so don't go spending all your mustering out cash on fancy gear, hmm? Especially not before taxes are applied...

Age. I know the rulebook generally has characters age in increments of 4 years per term, but we know life isn't always so neat and orderly. If you get discharged from a career, for example, or other similar circumstances, feel free to pick an age within the appropriate bracket.

Also, we should have our first character sheet ready soon, so I hope that'll motivate the rest of you to get in on the action. If you haven't got the Traveller books on hand, let me know and I'll provide you with the necessary materials (what's been keeping you this long?)

One question - WHICH Traveller? The D20 kind or the "original" kind?

There's no D20's in the one I'm looking at now, so...

@Azrael - he means Mongoose Traveller.

So...

WHERE ARE THOSE CHAR SHEETS?!

Come on, so far only Mad and Malek have shown the *slightest* bit of initiative there, not counting the sheet already submitted by Laptop. And Az gets a point for at least asking for the rulebook... where's the rest of you volunteers and your character ideas, huh?

First Come, First Serve doesn't work based on when you post interest, but on when you post the character. Just because you were quick to type up a single line of text doesn't mean I'm willing to wait a year for the character. So, if you do want to participate, get a move on before I decide to run the game for just one or two PCs. With the possible option for more characters down the line.

Alright, first, I have to apologize to X. I don't think i'm ever going to get a sheet to you, and TBH, with my new policy that i'm about to set, it's not going to happen.

from now on, I have no interest in any PBF's, except for a D&D campaign. If someone posts a one shot, I'll sign up for that too.

I had some busy days recently, but the best's yet to come. I'm going to supply you with a char sheet as soon as it will be possible, but if I'll be slacking too much, start without me.

Seriously.

You have until this weekend. Then I'm kicking this thing off regardless of how many more characters I get.

I've pretty much got a character ready but i'm not really sure about how age works. If i have a character who has finished his fifth term how old will he be?
Title: Re: Yet another PBF. More gun!

Start at 18 and add 4 years for every full term.

Hey, pushing 40 isn't old...

Not young either, I suppose, but still.
