I don't like this, but if it were to be added I'd like the prereq's to be something other than the melee-line, as I think that's too straightforward and it wouldn't make you think about which traits to choose.

Maybe Badass should be the requirement? Because you know, hacking hellspawn to bits with a chainsaw in one hand and the butcher's cleaver in the other hand is pretty badass.

Nah. You should be able to turn it on and off as many times as you'd like. The fact that you have to stand still and work on the damn thing is a penalty in itself. You get thrown away by a stray acid ball - you die, as you probably won't get close enough to try for the second time...

I like to watch stuff blow up... but you went down the stairs. You don't see it - you hear it from a safe distance. Besides - it takes a little bit to really blow up...

The first part: if you can use it even after disarming, then dropping the bomb downstairs would be a problem. See, you drop it down, monsters throw it back at you, you keep dropping it down until it works. This is kind of silly. Arming the bomb while not invulnerable should have some sort of risk with it, like losing the bomb. If you screw up with the bomb so it would kill you, but manage to disarm it in time, I think the fact that you're still alive and kicking is good enough and the bomb should be taken away from you.

2nd: Think of it as a cutscene of sorts. The @ disappears downstairs, but you're still treated to the action.

Pistol doesn't need accuracy. The first level is cleared with the shotgun, point-blank range luring enemies into doorways as if you were playing AoB. TaN is good for that and helps you survive until you get the chaingun in Hell's Arena. Usually you get a lvlup there and can then take EE.

This is a good idea. The way things are now, I think Badass is the least useful trait/perk, whatever they're called. I didn't take it even in AoMs where it supposedly should be most useful. This would certainly make it more useful, and make your doomguy FEEL BADASS, shrugging off wimpy bullets and mosquito(=lost soul) bites. Also, nice synergy with the TaN traits which are it's prerequisite after all.

Ao100 is already a cakewalk, though.  I beat it on the second try.  Even AoMr is harder.

That might not be an optimal way to judge the difficulty of things. I did AoMr on the third try and AoMs on the first try. Ergo, masochism is easier than marksmanship?

About the nukes I'd say that if it's not too much trouble coding-wise to do, it should be done like this:

1) Make it possible to shut down the nuke after arming it. Preferably with a chance to fail, as your doomguy is going all "OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT" and his hands are trembling as he's cutting the wires or some such. Maybe 50%=yay, 40%=fail, 10%=epic fail, bomb blows up in ya face. Also after disarming the bomb it should be useless so you wouldn't be able to use it again.

2) Make it possible to drop a nuke down the stairs.

3) Make it possible for the nuke to get thrown back up. Always in the case of lvl 25(or 26). The checking for monsters thing is too complicated I think, just make it a flat % or something like (10 + level#)% chance. Well that might not work so well in an Ao100 but it's supposed to be a challenge after all...

4) When leaving a level, check for an armed nuke. If one is found then blow it up but don't apply damage to the player. This way you'd get to see the explosions and stuff like normally.

I think this would make for the most 'fun'.

I don't think this works, I tried to test it a bit. I found out that demons died a whole lot easier to the chainsaw than a combat knife, and you only get one "You hit the demon" message.

Invincibility effect wore out after going down a level and arming a nuke :) I think it was a Ao100 run I was doing...

Went with a glass cannon sniper build, EE, CE, SoaB, TH.

The beginning went pretty well, was down to the 40s in the arena before gaining exp for lvl3 and then it was easy. I entered the wall at 98% and tried to be careful, and only got hit twice which was a good tradeoff for lots of exp (was lvl5 at the time) and the normal goodies. I didn't get shot at all in the Halls of Carnage, and leveled up to 7 while in there so I managed to leave at 100%. All in all things were good, I had lots of ammo and rockets so lots of corner firing and shooting rockets kept me in pretty good shape.

On a cavernous level with A's I shot one down and ran down the stairs. Saw the entrance to the Vaults and skipped them. Had lots of fun on one level with an invincibility. I was doing fine, but on lvl 22 the starting room was small, and when I opened the door out I was greeted with fireblasts by 2 V's and some M's, didn't bother to count them but used one of my two homing phase devices. The stairs down was in a room full of cacos, one of which took a bite of me before I got down. On a mazy lvl23 I was down to 48%. Right away I was staring at a M, blasted him with rockets, then a B also got some rockets in his face and a A fell to one salvo of damage modded plasma. Then I saw the stairs down, had to take one step in lava to get down. Skipped 24 with the other homing phase device and entered Phobos Arena with 44%...

C was spawned pretty much in the middle. First I melted two plasma rifles on him. He retaliated with a rocket to my face. At 26% I used one of my two homing devices, which threw me not far away next to the down wall. Tried to get to a better position but C came into sight quickly, shot him with the BFG, C countered with a rocket. 2%. Fuck. My second homing device took me to the far right. I started shooting rockets blindly to the left. Don't know if I hit him. When C came into sight I shot him with the BFG, looked at him and it said "mortally wounded". After "morally wounded" there's still "almost dead", so I knew he might not die to the next shot but decided to shoot him and luckily it was enough.

After reading through my mortem while posting here I noticed that I had the Phaseshift boots, so I probably was faster than the Cyberdemon and I could have made that final fight a whole lot easier for myself but that's what you get for playing at 1 am :/

Now that's a nice, even number of kills don't you think?

Funny thing, all those 4 deaths mentioned there have been in Hell's Arena :) After two of my wanna-be marksmen died there, each time starting next to a caco and a few demons/lost souls, I thought it would be better to leave that level alone. I also skipped the mortuary, it's just so much more difficult without the BFG and I didn't want to risk it. But this time I was ready for the Lava Pits with three envirosuits. I have to admit, steel boots and green armours are a little bit underwhelming as rewards for the last special level in the game, but at least there was also an artifact armour I didn't use at all because it was pretty blasted after I ripped it off a hell knight's carcass.

This was a fun game. I find the AoMr challenge more balanced than in some previous version I've played: I remember beating AoMr on HMP more easily than a regular game without challenges on HNTR. There have been some changes to the pistol perks I think, or maybe something else but either way the difficulty was good: about as difficult as my shotgun game earlier, not too rough. I was down to maybe 14 bullets in my inventory at one stage and was starting to get scared but found a chaingun lying on the floor. Next time I'll carry around 500 instead of 400 rounds... Then there was a nice battle with some archviles and their gang on level 24 in a big, open space.

One thing I noticed about this game was lots and LOTS of red armours: I'm carrying 5 and discarded one on the previous level and probably another some time earlier. That's also without doing the Mortuary. Hopefully my luck won't even out and my next marine to enter Hell, an aspiring Angel of Berserk, will find many blood-red suits to make him look good while I hunt for that ever-elusive Sergeant rank :D

Every year during christmas I visit my parents house and play roguelikes on their old computer. So again this year it was time for another round of DoomRL.

I, like so many others, have been brainwashed into thinking that the only way to play doomrl is the rapidfire way of picking EE, SoaB and TH and blasting away with chainguns and plasma rifles. So I decided to give the shotguns a try, being inspired by some posts by Thomas and others on these forums.

My first two guys couldn't make it past Hell's Arena, but this guy found a combat shotgun and a blue armour before the arena so it was pretty doable. I used a double shotty and a rocket launcher as my main weapons, also carried around a chaingun and one slot of ammo but dumped them after a few levels since I didn't use the gun once.

This game didn't feel too hard, I can't remember any really tight spots and at worst I was probably down to two or three large medpacks in my inventory. This game also felt more like DOOM, "strafing" imps and barons with the shotgun! Everybody ought to give shotguns a try.

First time I saw the lava pits, I was prepared for a while but lost a couple suits due to lava appearing from levers so couldn't do the level, and that's probably why I only got 95%.
