Title: Stars & Salvage PBF - IC Thread
Post by: Xander Morhaime on August 26, 2010, 15:58
Parthia system, southern fringe of Federation space
June 12th, 2805, 12:03 galstandard time

"It's a good ship, sir. The best you can get in this sector and this price range, certainly..."

The manager of the Parthia IV station impound dock continued making his sales pitch as you all stood in an observation deck overlooking the berth holding the ship the man was going on about. An old destroyer, decommissioned a long time ago and since then subjected to numerous modifications by its subsequent owners. Its shape was blocky, nowhere near as stylish as the more modern ships, but it looked to be in good condition... and, being in the impound dock, it came dead cheap. The name "Blue Crow" was painted on the side of the hull.

"...plasma steel armour plating, a pair of SirTech 28-series mark 3 pulse thrusters, four hardpoint turrets to ward off all but the most determined or suicidal pirate..."

Parthia itself was a rather unimportant system. Five planets, two of which were gas giants, and the other three were uninhabited rocks that hadn't yet merited the attention of any colonisers, and an asteroid belt between the first and second planet serving as the system's main point of interest. And of course there was the waystation above Parthia IV, the first of two gas giants in the system. It made its business refuelling ships and processing raw ore from belt miners... and, at times like this, also from selling ships confiscated to cover debts.

"...shipboard AI, medical bay, plenty of cargo space, prospector drones included in the package. A real steal at this price, I should think..."

You'd all come here in the employ or company of Doran Routhe, a retired officer of the Federation 3rd Fleet. After so many systems traversed by passenger liner you had finally decided that having your own ship would be far more preferable... and, in the long run, more profitable. Of course, ship prices being what they are it wasn't looking good until you happened to chance upon the auction where the Blue Crow was being sold. Of course buying it used up most of your collective funds, but it looked like it could pay off soon.

"...everything as the owner left it, save for perishable supplies which had to be removed off ship. Assuming there's no questions, I'll just need sir's authorisation on the transaction and you can move on to having a look around the ship yourselves."

- It comes with an AI? That's rare, especially considering it's a destroyer. - Doran tapped the ground with his cane - Is the reactor supplied, or do we need to buy fuel to make it run?

"I believe the AI was one of the modifications installed by the previous captain. And a fuel refill comes with the package, sir," the manager replied with a smile. "The ship is also fitted with fuel scoops... it's nowhere near as efficient as refuelling at a station, but the option's there."

- Well unless others have any questions I guess we can authorize and move on. Real luck to find a ship at such price. It might be old, but it sounds well equipped for the cost.

Pacing impatiently back and forth Dr. Shelder makes an idle gesture, his attention obviously focused elsewhere.

Well, what are you waiting for Commodore?  Sign the damned thing so we have a way off this rock.  I hope the medical bay is in better condition than it's hull.

Vince's hands working quickly, he draws out what appears to be the claw of a large feral beast from his shrit.  His hand grips it tightly, but his cold steely eyes stare straight at the retired commodore, Doran.

Elizabeth muffled a yawn, and laid down her luggage on the floor, and sat down next to it, closing her eyes. She was really weary, and was really hoping for the chance to get some real sleep sometime soon. She was not really paying attention to the salesman anyway, for her involvement in the purchase was painfully small compared to the one of her much wealthier companions.

If you did not know her, you would probably find it surprising that this lithe, slightly short women who rarely left Doran's side was in fact a veteran of one of the most elite non-Legion formations in the Federation. Of course, there were some give-aways, but none too obvious. Somebody interested in military gear and lifestyle could probably notice that the tight, formfitting bodyglove she was wearing was in fact standard ODI issue sealant sheath, worn under armour to seal eventual breaches, and despite being not very modes nor really comfortable- it made the wearer sweat like crazy- also usually worn off-duty as well, for it drastically cut down the time necessary to get yourself into the battle gear or that her hair were cut in standard military fashion. Somebody gifted with good sight could also possibly notice the stock of a military rifle sticking out from Elizabeth's luggage bag, and that was probably the last clue available on her origin.

She yawned again, this time failing to muffle it in time.

'Sorry...'

"Ze sleep ov yours vazn't too good, ??????? ?", Matvieyevich utters silently, adressing Elizabeth, standing somewhere nearby. After a few seconds, he yawns as well, leaning his back against the wall. It appears that his interest in a purchase is relatively low. But, he decides to ask a question anyway - just for his own curiosity.

"Vould ye mind telling uz, zir, vhich ?????????? did thiz ship belong to before ?"

After a while, he adds, smiling keenly.

"And... vhere iz ze catch ?"

"Yes, that is the proper question. Where is the catch?. If you don't mind, I would like to look over all the paperwork you have regarding this vessel's service records, repair history, a list of all renovations. If there is anything we'll have to fix ourselves, I'd like to do it before we get stranded in space." Evedro asked. His small frame left him unimposing but he had enough confidence to make up for it. Brushing his scraggly brown hair from his face, he pulled out a small notepad and began making notes of the exterior of the ship.

"Pardon, sir... which what?" the manager asked, apparently not understanding Yurij's thick accent.

"There is no catch, sirs. Granted, the ship has had the majority of its weapon systems removed and its thrusters and power plants swapped out as per decommissioning regulations, but it still is armed, as I've mentioned, with four hardpoint turrets. I would expect the larger cargo hold doesn't do structure strength any favours, but only if it's getting shot at. We don't exactly have a history of the ship on hand here - the vessel itself was confiscated to cover the previous owner's debts, anything beyond the most obvious changes is anyone's guess. I would just like to remind sirs that ships in pristine condition, with a meticulously kept service record and maintenance history, tend to cost many times more than what sirs will be paying. You get what you pay for, as the saying goes."

'Just buy it, crew...' murmured Elizabeth. 'We need that ship, right? No chance for getting something better at that price, right?'

She stretched her arms.

'So just finalize the purchase... no sense to drag it any further.'

"??????o.", shrugged Yurij, bouncing off the wall. "Let uz finish thiz an' depart already, ??? ? Ve'll have ta check thiz one out later on anyvay."

Blasted place. The Russian was sick of its aura already. The silent hum was making it hard to concentrate, not to mention getting rid of a feeling he was recieving for a few hours - or grasping into anybody's mind just for fun.
All he wished for was to get away from here as soon as possible, no matter if on board of an old, malfunctioning destroyer, a prison ship or a wooden boat.
Silently, he stared upon the rest, watching Doran finalizing the trade, with a shallow glance sweeping both Evedro and the Doctor, finally looking at Elizabeth busy with fighting off the sleep, then moving his stare back to the Commodore.
Slowly, he sat under the wall, checking his possessions.
"Blue crov. Ye, more like >>?????? ????<<...", Morgov pondered, his face marked with no smile. "Ruzty hen."

"Wonderful, wonderful... if you'd just sign here and authorise the transaction, you can get to looking around your new purchase..."

***

The formalities done, you descended to the docking bay. The first closer look at the ship was promising at least - the hull, while a bit on the dirty side, looked quite solid. A grav platform carried you up to the airlock located near the front of the ship. The airlock opened without any problems and let you aboard the ship. The interior wasn't exactly first-class, no frills or shiny paintjob, but no wires just hanging about loose in the corridors. The air was a bit cool here, colder than the station's atmosphere.

And then the shipboard AI spoke up.

"Greeting: Welcome aboard the Blue Crow," the voice said in a calm and measured tone with a metallic ring to it. "I have been notified that you will be taking command of this fine vessel. Introduction: I am Carrion, the on-board computer. It is my duty, and possibly - though unlikely - my pleasure to see this ship safely through any insane risks you may wish to expose it to. Request: If you will step up to the bridge, I can provide you with a technical readout of this ship and its capabilities."

When the rest of the crew was busy chattering about with the ship's AI, Morgov went to park his ATV in the destroyer's hangar. After a while he came back, fiddling with keys ringing silently.
"Ve might azzume zhat I'm done wif inztallation.", he comments, smiling. "A ??????? hangar ve have, ??."

Evedro spent the first few hours performing routine check-ups on the ships various systems. Despite what the stupid A- , what 'Carrion' said, he wasn't going to fly around in this thing unless he was sure he wouldn't be vented due to a rusty bolt or weak shielding plate. Everything seemed to be up to acceptable levels, although there was always room for improvement.
"Well everything looks to be in working order," he said, returning to the bridge. "I'll have to bring in 'Charon' later after we have left port. Tell me when you are ready to leave so I can prepare."

After Carrion's last comment something resembling a laughter could be heard coming from Doran, though it quickly was replaced by a coughing fit, which ended almost as quickly.

- "Well that's a pragmatic AI if I ever saw one. Let's go to the bridge then, I'll need to learn more about this ship if I am to command it."

"Statement: Of course, captain. The stairs leading up to the bridge are on the fore and aft sides of the control tower," Carrion instructed.

The bridge, once found, presented a much more impressive sight than the rest of the ship. While the previous owners apparently didn't care much if their wall plating was dirty and its colours didn't match, the bridge was fitted with some very up-to-date tech. Near the front was a command chair and a holographic interface console, as well as four secondary control stations lining the room's sides. No windows, but the walls and roof were lined with a display screen that flickered on to show the docking bay outside. Behind the helm was the main access terminal for the ship AI, with a tag (the sort you'd see on dead bodies in a morgue) attached reading "Carrion: 20:46, 5th Feb 2785, Gulo II ACNF".

The holographic display was switched to show a rotating layout of the ship as Carrion explained the various elements.

"Explanation: We are currently in the conning tower, located here," a fragment of the display on the top of the ship flashed red. "As you can plainly see, the ships control systems are located here. Crew quarters are located here," twelve rooms lit up on the display. "The ship can accommodate a larger crew, but the previous owners saw fit to convert the fore staterooms into recreation and social rooms, leaving the aft rooms for quarters. Weapon systems are located here," this time, four pods on the sides of the ship's hull lit up. "This ship as at its disposal two fore dual CairoCorp Pulsar-300 series turrets, and two aft CairoCorp Lancer-450 series turrets, customised to provide greater accuracy. Power plants and propulsion systems are located in the aft pods," the display lit up the two large structures at the ship's rear. "The medical facilities are located at the base of the conning tower, while the engineering bay and hangar are in the aft. You will note the remainder of the ship has been given over to cargo space," this time, about half of the ship display flashed to show the spacious hold.

"Additional: Should you have any further questions, or any orders for me, I await them with great anticipation."

Vince started to grow restless.  He had already spent far too long in one place than he would have liked.  This discomfort had been growing ever since he set foot into this empty metal vessel, but had been abated slightly by the presence of the A.I.  He couldn't quite explain it, but he felt more of an affinity toward the synthetic intelligence than the rest of his "friends."

The military types couldn't be rushed, he may as well find the medical facilities and distract his mind somehow from this lingering unease.  First, however...

"Carrion, I'm interested in hearing more about... yourself."  Smiling slyly, he imagined the faces on his companions to be quizzical.  "Tell us about your functions and capability, and anything else you may feel like sharing."

"Recitation: I am responsible for maintaining the smooth functioning of all ship subsystems on the Blue Crow, and as such have access to all control routines. Furthermore, if precision control is required, I can take over gunnery of a number of the ship weapon systems or handle evasive maneuvers. Proud statement: I also possess a number of other skills, but for various reasons the previous crew were not willing to indulge me in their use," Carrion rattled off.

"Is there anything else you wish to know?"

"Rest assured Carrion, I am quite interested in... " Dr. Shelder glances at his companions and corrects himself. "We are interested in your full capabilities and will surely utilize them in the near future."

"Tell me, just what sort of skills went unappreciated by the former crew?  Members of my group have expressed interest in this ship's history, so feel free to share what you would like about the former owners."

'Sorry, but I think I'll just try to take some rack time now...' muttered Elizabeth, picking up her bag again, and descending from the bridge.

Making her way through the dimly lit corridors of the destroyer, she reached her appointed cabin. With a sigh of relief, she opened the door, and slipped inside.

The room was pretty bare, furnished with little more than narrow bunk, a steel locker and worn down table, but compared to some other place in which she had the questionable pleasure of spending her rack time, it could be almost considered luxurious. She did not have to share it with fellow soldiers, for one.

Slowly, she begun to unpack her luggage. To the locker went her rifle and armour, along with sealed box of ammunition. Autopistol, properly locked and unloaded landed on the able, next to a stray magazine for it. She dug deeper in the bag, unearthing of more personal importance. Box of various mementos from years past, Bronze Star wrapped in grey package paper, holo of what appeared to be her family.

Yes, she was a sentimental person to the bone.

Finally, she stuffed her now empty bag beneath the bed. Mere seconds later, she was in deep sleep.

"Proud statement: I believe I could handle precise medical operations quite adeptly. I have spent some time honing my skills with high-output lasers for mining purposes, and I am quite confident that scaling down to a laser scalpel and a different target would not be a problem," Carrion went on. "Additional: The previous crew would not let me participate in the preparation of food either. I cannot see why, as from what I observed the process is not difficult at all, and in fact looks inefficient and could be streamlined..."

- "Err... thanks Carrion, we'll think about it." - Doran tried his best to keep a poker face - "In the meantime, how about we take the ship out for a test run?"
Title: Re: Stars & Salvage PBF - IC Thread
Post by: Xander Morhaime on September 03, 2010, 08:44
"Statement: Certainly, captain. If you will take your place at the helm, I will take us out of dock," Carrion said.

The holographic display switched from a view of the ship to the intricate set of ship controls - though for now they seemed to be running themselves as Carrion handled the undocking. Plenty of numbers flashed by - power system readings, engine operation parameters, trajectories, authorisation codes, proximity readings... the usual work of the shipboard computer. After about a minute the ship lurched slightly as the docking clamps were removed and the hull lifted off from the docking bay floor, carefully swinging around towards the docking bay gates. As they began to open, the Blue Crow accelerated, gliding swiftly past them out into the far more spacious docking tunnel, and from there out into the void of space...

The screens mimicking windows had changed to a view of the "sky," with sparse stars able to be seen through the light reflected off the gas giant Parthia IV, while an extra display showed up on the holoscreen - a view of the system as a whole, with a blinking beacon marking your current position.

Parthia wasn't an especially crowded system. Orbiting the smallish green star were a total of five planets. Parthia I, closest to the star, was an irradiated airless rock that hadn't even caught the attention of any prospector. The reason for this was the Parthia asteroid belt between the first and second planet, a wide band of space debris, not much in the way of valuable minerals according to Federation surveys, but there were plenty of stories about individual prospectors chancing upon a treasure trove of rare minerals in one exotic asteroid or another... and even more stories of prospectors who'd lost (or almost lost) their ships and lives to what was assumed to be pirate activity. Parthia II was likewise a rather dull rock with a few captured asteroids orbiting it in place of moons. The less armed or more cautious prospectors usually turned their attention there, though profits from such operations had been historically rather sparse. Parthia III was a cold desert planet with a surface equally hostile to colonisation attempts and mining efforts and a small moon that wasn't any more welcoming. Parthia IV was a gas giant with quite a few moons, though the main point of interest there was the refuelling and refining station you'd just left. Finally, Parthia V was another gas giant, smaller than IV though with a set of rings to make up for it, and a handful of moons.

The system map also marked out the two jump gates present: the Lyskel gate leading (eventually) back to Federation space, and the Estiad gate leading further out into the fringe territories. There were no natural warp points, according to Federation surveys.

It took another ten minutes or so to pick up Evedro's own little ship, but once that was sorted and everyone who wasn't sleeping was once again present on the bridge, Carrion spoke up again.

"Statement: Awaiting further instructions, captain. If you wish to perform a test of the sensor suite and other ship systems, I can plot a course for the asteroid belt to try it out there. Alternatively, if you already have a destination in mind, simply tell me and I will suggest an optimal course."

Having successfully docked 'Charon' with the 'Blue Crow', Evedro laid down in his personal cot onboard 'Charon'. Sure he had his own room, but it would be some time before he would get used to it. Unfortunately 'Charon' was the only Ship's Boat on the 'Blue Crow' meaning he would have to relinquish it as some point for use on jobs. With a defeated sigh, Evedro drifted off to sleep.

Title: Re: Stars & Salvage PBF - IC Thread
Post by: Xander Morhaime on September 09, 2010, 14:13
Carrion was silent for a minute or two before speaking up again.

"Statement: I have completed a review of the offers available within the immediate area. Listing follows.
Option 1: All settled systems within this sector possess orbital facilities that must be supplied with reaction mass and fabricator raw materials to continue functioning - these are frequently used as a reliable source of income by private craft with the capability and capacity for large-scale mining, as stations will most often happily pay for whatever theycan use, though the prices are not too great.
Option 2: Cargo transfer contracts are also available at all settled locales - however, given the bulk amounts involved, the Blue Crow may not be the best-suited for this work. Numerous passenger transfer contracts are also available, but these are either high-risk assignments or low-pay assignments.
Option 3: Sector authorities are offering bounties on known pirate vessels. However, trying to hunt any down would be a very high-risk assignment.
Option 4: This is a recent posting, captain. The Federation is offering substantial bounties for information leading to the whereabouts of several ships that have gone missing in or around the Parthia system. The size of the bounties suggests a high-risk assignment, however."
Title: Re: Stars & Salvage PBF - IC Thread
Post by: Malek Deneith on September 11, 2010, 09:31
- "Asteroid mining sounds rather tendious, I'd leave this and low-pay transport contracts as last option if everything else fails. At the same time I don't think we should start off with high-risk transports or pirate hunt either..." - Doran considered the options aloud - "...so unless someone has any counter arguments I'd say we try our luck with missing ships. With any luck we'll manage to do it without running into any trouble, and if not... well let's hope we can handle them."

"My thoughts exactly.  I would prefer to make an actual earning instead of a small amount of funds that may or may not cover the cost of maintenance and fuel.  I wouldn't know where to begin tracking down pirates and our ship would assuredly take damage bringing them down possibly negating the reward, making it a pointless venture.  Our vessel is ill suited as a bulk transport ship or luxury passenger vessel, so it seems that looking for the missing ships is our best course of action."

The Parthia system and missing ships...  It may be completely unrelated, but it would be a good area to start my personal search as well.

Smiling at a private thought, Vince continues "Being a recent posting, the events surrounding the missing ships will likely be fresh, surely aiding in an investigation.  While the risk may be high, with proper caution and our diverse skill sets it ought to be something that we can handle."

By the time the rest was discussing matters of buisness, Yurij did everything he could do to familiarize himself with the ship, beginning with finding himself a place to sleep, saving his equipment there and putting down the armor. After a quarter of furnishing his new den, he leaves the cabin - wearing fresh clothes and a traditional duelling hide, carrying around his legacy blade attached to a belt. He whistles happily as the door seal, lights a cigarette, then takes a walk around the Blue Crow's deck, his steps echoing through the corridors.

After some time, he arrives back on the bridge. With a smile, he says:
"Zhe ?????? iz right, ???????????. Let uz take care ov thoze lozt ships, at leazt the bounty zeemz vorth ze rizk. Yet az for piratez, I don't think zhat ve should dizdain zis one completely. Let uz keep it in mind juzt in caze ve met any ov zhem during our voyagez, ????"

"Statement: Tracking down the ships themselves may be difficult, captain. The offer has been up for six days, the vessels themselves have been missing for thirteen. The locals have shown no interest in the considerable amount of money, and Federation authorities have apparently been unable to locate the ships in question thus far. Summary: Unconventional methods of searching may need to be employed," Carrion explained, then paused for a few moments.

"Statement: I have completed acquiring available information on the ships in question. There is not much of it. As jump-capable vessels, they did not use the gate to enter the system and so precise information on their point of origin is unavailable. System control has recorded four simultaneous events matching jump-exit with a signature matching the missing vessels, thirteen standard days ago, but the ships themselves never docked at the local station. There have been no jump-entry events recorded since then, so it is reasonable to expect they are somewhere within system, however. Ship specifications are classified, but communication signatures and visual ID data have been provided."

"Well if they registered the ships appearing in system, then there should be possible to roughly estimate where they appeared. And that's some starting point... but not a strong one sadly. If anyone has some ideas other than going into that area and trying to scan area around it in hopes of finding something to lead us to the ships, I'm all ears."
Title: Re: Stars & Salvage PBF - IC Thread

"Well, let's take a look at what we know.  First of all, the locals have shown no interest in a large sum of money.  Greed is a base trait of all humanity, only trumped by survival.  The locals know or suspect something but are unwilling to volunteer that information to the Federation.  Secondly, why is the Federation getting involved?  The locals obviously didn't ask for their help in finding the missing ships, so what possible desire would the Federation have for locating them?  Thirdly, they jumped TO this system captain, TO this system.  They must have been expected somewhere."

Mental gears whirring, Dr. Shelder started to pace back and forth.  "Now, what do we get when we tie all these clues together?  Keep in mind that they offer was only posted six days ago while the vessels have been missing for thirteen.  Obviously, the vessels were expected to arrive within 7 days to their destination or no bounty would have been posted.  I suspect an organization large enough to cause the locals to be afraid and entrenched enough to have eluded the Federation and reduced them to hounds sniffing after ships."

Federation hounds, those damned Federation curs!  They will pay dearly for their betrayal. "In fact, I suspect this job is a bit more dangerous than we initially realized.  However, our best bet is to find their approximate entry point based off of their jump-exit signatures and find any docking points within a seven days travel.  Then we investigate those points, that is clearly the best course of action."

"Carrion, could you let us know if you detect their communication signatures at all during our search?  There's a good chance at least one of these ships will be giving off an SOS signal if foul play befell any of them.  "

"Confirmation: I will alert you to any transmissions received. Warning: It should be noted that the ship's sensors are on an extended array, and while this provides an improved scanning range and performance while extended, they are far less effective while retracted... and fast movement with them extended has a 93.21% chance of causing serious damage to the array. Summary: It is unlikely we will simply overhear a lifeboat beacon while travelling around," Carrion explained.

- "Well, assuming we can figure out their intended destination we could plan our search route with stops along the way in places that would allow us to do full scans of the area. It'd be slow, and still far from perfect, but it's better than relying on lower efficiency of on-the-move scans." - Doran responded - "What bothers me is lack of information. The classified ship specs, the fact that Doctor just mentioned that Federation got involved AND tried to keep the whole thing quiet until they decided they need help. This whole deal begins to stink."

"The greater the stink, the easier it is for the nose to follow." Vince responds, seemingly unconcerned with the growing danger of the operation.

"Carrion, if you will, could you give us the approximate jump-exit coordinates of the missing ships as well as all viable docking berths within seven days travel from the jump-exit signatures at a standard speed?"

"Calculating... Result: Displaying jump-point navigation beacon," Carrion said, the holographic display of the system being enriched by a blinking dot, a good distance "above" the orbit planes of the system's planets. "Travel time from current location: one hour, twenty three minutes. Known docking berths: Parthia IV station, Lyskel jump gate, Estiad jump gate. Other possibilities include planetary surface landings or unregistered asteroid stations. Report ends."

"Summary: If the ships in question have docked anywhere in this system, they have not done so at any registered and monitored site. Further orders?"

- "Is there any indication in data we have available that this system wasn't the final destination of the ships? If not, then our best guess would be that they planned to dock at the station and start scanning from approximate entry point towards it"

"Course to Parthia IV jump-site buoy plotted, engaging engines," Carrion calmly stated, the faintest vibration felt through the hull of the ship as the engines kicked into gear. "Statement: I am afraid the ships' assignment in system is also classified."

With that matter dealt with and a long flight ahead of you, there was some time to get to know the ship and its accommodations a bit better. The previous owners had only seemed to use 8 of the staterooms as actual living quarters. The rooms were sparingly furnished and devoid of decorations, though that could be attributed to the ship being used to repay some debts. There was a bed, complete with a 0G harness, a table and chair attached to the floor by magnets, basic sanitary facilities... So far only one stateroom had been claimed - third from the front on the starboard side, where miss Ernal was currently getting her beauty sleep, the others were still up for grabs.

The other four staterooms had been repurposed for other uses - the second one from the front on the starboard side had been made into a kitchen, though the supplies you'd been provided with at the station were quite cheap and could only be called food by the most generous (at least it contained nutrients and was intended for human consumption). Its opposite number on the port side was a social room with a bigger table and a few more chairs, while the two foremost staterooms... well, whatever furnishings had been there had already been removed, so the rooms themselves were pretty much bare.

Should anyone be watching the bridge and controls, they would eventually see the Blue Crow arrive at the jump-point for the Parthia system. The view here was uninteresting in the extreme - far above the orbital planes and away from the system star, it had an overabundance of clear open space, taken up only by a buoy that processed incoming and outgoing jump coordinates. With no ships in sight, those on the bridge could watch as the sensor suite was deployed and the holographic display cycled through a number of profiles before settling on one. Within a minute of arriving at the jump-point, the word "SCANNING" appeared in big letters on the bridge display.

It was at least another hour of nothing exciting at all before the first results started coming back. The "SCANNING" message shrunk down a bit, and the bridge display began to scroll columns of letters and numbers. Those with a bit more grounding in the sciences might recognise chemical symbols, mostly various metal elements. Over time, the numerous readings got filtered, a few entries being marked out if only for a few moments. Survey work only really got interesting once something was found...

As the scanning went on, a small display of the Parthia system was visible in the corner, a vague cloud spreading over it as the scanner added possible results to the map. The most obvious was the thick ring-like cloud, no doubt the system's asteroid belt... a few larger clouds signified planets, and a few more tiny clouds away from the planets could probably be attributed to rogue asteroids, comets, and other such space junk. Another hour passed by as the scans became more precise, the clouds on the display fading, becoming replaced by faintly glowing spheres, then eventually by brightly glowing dots.

Finally, the ship intercom sparked to life with Carrion's usual voice: "Request: Crew report to bridge."

'What the...' mumbled Elizabeth as the intercom pulled her from the sleep. Reluctantly, but hastily, she squeezed into the sealant sheathe, hoping that the sudden alarm from the ship's AI does not herald any troubles.

She made her way to the bridge, only to find it empty- to her surprise, she was the first to get there. She took a look onto the holographic display, trying to make a sense out of what it displayed, but quickly decided that it was not her part to fiddle with it.

'Hmm... Carrion, right?' she asked after a while of hesitation. 'Does this ship have any interstellar communication? I have a few messages to send...'

A few moments after Elizabeth appears on the bridge, the Russian comes also, clad in his combat equipment. He still wears his family sabre, though.
"Yurij reporting for zervice -oh, pardon me, ???????. Thought ze ??????????? vould already be here.", he announces with a slight smile. His eyes seem to be a bit bloated - appears that he had slept heavily. What would psychically tire him so much?
One's thoughts quickly get confirmed, as last Morgov yawns broadly, covering his mouth with a fist.
"???????? ????.", he says.

"Statement: The ship is capable of interfacing with FedNet for purposes of long-range communications. However, I suggest waiting with any outgoing calls until more pressing business has been dealt with," Carrion replied.

Once the rest of the crew had gathered on the bridge, Carrion moved on to explain the situation.

"Statement: I believe I may have found the location of the missing ships. If you will direct your attentions to the system map," the AI said, adjusting the bridge display so that the system map was much bigger and plainly visible to everyone. The scan results were still overlayed on the map, ranging from the vague cloud marking out the asteroid belt and planets, to several bright dots... one of them in close proximity of a planet, a few more scattered around the asteroid belt, and a somewhat larger one some distance above the orbital plane. "Explanation: I have taken the liberty of adjusting the survey suite to scan for concentrations of refined metals that might be found within ship hulls. We may safely disqualify the signal here," the dot near the planet-cloud faded out, "as that will be the Parthia IV station. The readings from the asteroid belt may be worth following up, but they are just as likely to be unregistered stations or mining ships. Therefore, I suggest that the reading here," the larger bright spot removed from the rest of the system flashed red, "would be our best bet of locating the missing ships at the moment. I have already calculated a course, we are 26 minutes' flight from the site. If the captain approves, I will set us off on that course."

Though the AI didn't have a proper body, or even a face, you got the impression it was watching you expectantly and waiting for a decision.

- "Very well.." - said Doran who returned at the beginning of explanation from what apparently was a trip to get something to drink - "That location does look like our best bet so let's check it out. Do save the readings coming from asteroid belt though - they might be worth checking after we finish... or quit... or current job. Also I'd want any of you that can operate any ship stations to do so and stay alert. We don't know what made the ships disappear so we need to be prepared to take immediate action when we do find out."

"Confirmation: The coordinates have been logged for further reference, Captain. Statement: Preparing for departure. Retracting sensor array... complete. Alignment... complete. Initiating engine burn. Estimated time to arrival: twenty six minutes."

The flight was quiet and rather devoid of excitement - the greatest thing of interest was updates on passive and short-range sensors, checking for transmissions, signals, proximity...

Twenty minutes in, the proximity alarm went off.

You could almost feel the ship decelerate rapidly while the holographic display switched to show the more immediate surroundings of the ship. Nothing at first, but before long small blips began appearing... then more and more, and bigger in size.

"Warning: Debris field detected. Adjusting course," Carrion stated calmly. The "window" screens on the bridge still didn't show much of interest, but that changed as you approached the field. Initially just a single piece of metal floating by on one side or another, it got increasingly dense... and the pieces got bigger too. "Statement: Composition scan suggests outer hull fragments."

Before too long, you could see what the hull fragments were from. Though the field was becoming a considerable navigation hazard, forcing a crawl speed from the ship, the heart of it all eventually came into view. It looked every bit the battlefield... though it was hard to say who (if anyone) won. The very heart of the zone was occupied by a seemingly derelict ship of impressive size - while it wasn't quite the size of a space station, it most certainly wasn't far behind. It seemed to be holding together, but as you got closer, you noticed a number of gaping holes in its outer hull. Several looked like you could fly the Crow in without much trouble, even. Surrounding the giant wreck were the gutted carcasses of some smaller ships of a definitely different make than the big one. There were four distinctly larger hulls among the surrounding ships, and quite a few smaller ones, some not much larger than the Crow.

The Blue Crow stopped before it reached the boundary of what could be called the main warzone. Carrion was keeping quiet, though you could see from the control interface that it was scanning and trying to identify the various wrecks.

Elizabeth stared in awe at the battlefield.

'Well, sir... if I recall correctly, there was no mention about lost capital ships, right?' she asked, turning towards Doran.

She sighed, smiling faintly.

'I just hope that there will be no need to board it. And that whoever did that is no longer around.'

The ship's deceleration and subsequent halt awoke Evedro. Normally it would be not be enough to notice but Evedro's bed was suspended above the floor, amplifying any motions and vibrations given by the ship. This practice was adopted to increase his response times in any mechanical problems occurring during his breaks. A practice that had served him well. He once had a water bed for such purposes but after a small 'pressure leak' incident, a water bed was no longer viable.
Making himself presentable, he made his way to the bridge. "Hey, whats going... on..." Evedro's voice drifted off as he saw what was on the main screen. "Holy shit. This place looks worse than the aftermath of Tudor V."

You could almost hear Carrion shrug in response

"Deduction: It may be that most captains operating prospecting ships out in this area have enough sense to realise that a high concentration of processed metals a sizeable distance from any major stellar body, while having a high probability of being a battlefield, may yet contain the side that won the battle, thus discouraging mining vessels from investigating such places. Side Comment: Private salvage operations rarely involve more than one prize ship at a time," the AI explained patiently.

Either way since we found the wrecks, it's time to pass the information - Carrion, please establish communication with Parthia IV station, I'm sure that there is some official that we can tell we found their ships. Also place salvage flag on the super-capital wreck. Unless authorities have something to say against it there is no reason to pass on that." - Doran turned to his companions with a smile - "Which means you might as well start preparing for boarding Elizabeth - that 'bunker-type' structure Carrion mentioned will require checking, and with any luck we might find something inside to clue us to what this ship is doing here"

"Repeated Statement: Military ships rarely carry survey sensors, captain, especially ones sufficient to tell processed metal apart from raw ore at long distances. Deduction: With no major power signatures present, it is likely the area would have seemed like so much space junk to any military ship in the area. Further deduction: It may also be that any locals who saw the search contract offer smelled a death trap and did not take up the job," Carrion explained. There was a pause afterwards, as the ship maneuvered in through the debris to approach the derelict.

"Query: Will that be a single-burst transmission, or a live feed, captain?" Carrion asked once the Crow had cleared the worst of the junk.

Elizbateh smiled and nodded, leaving the bridge.

She made her into her cabins, and there, opened the lockbox. Inside, she stored her combat armor, biggest memento and biggest asset she got. It was damaged and subsequently repaired over a course of a few dozens engagements, and served her faithfully from the year she was introduced into ODT. It was once painted in standard camouflage patterns, but when she- along with it- got demobilized, she ordered it to be recoloured stark white, and all the unit insignia removed. With a short sigh, she donned it, double checking all the joints before actually starting computer weave inside. Soon, the HUD displayed on the faceplate glared to live, giving her all kind of interesting readings on the suit integrity and such.

Taking off the helmet, she grabbed the bandoleer with ammo and strapped it to the armour. Finally, she reached for her rifle, trusted gauss carbine, reliable and powerful.

None of these items brought fond memories. She sighed, and returned to the bridge.

'Reporting for duty. Should the duke also don his suit? I would like to have someone behind me.'

"??, ? ?????.", answered the Russian shortly, bouncing off the wall, strapping on his helmet and reloading a combat rifle. The clip answered with a loud click, as Morgov's hand pushed it into the slot.

Appears that he was standing there idle like that all the time, dipped into his thoughts, wandering distantly. Who knows, what occupied his mind at a time? Perhaps not the battlefield you are on, not the matter of ships lost and found. He seems strangely neutral on what you got to discover a while ago.

"Give me a few minutes to prep 'Charon'." Evedro yelled to the crew, his scrawny figure already running back to the cargo hold. Being the only ship's boat on board, he knew he would have to give up his living quarters but didn't expect it to be so soon. Packing his cot and belongings in a small lock box, the interior seemed to quadruple in size.
"Hey! Everything is all set to go so come on down when you're ready to leave." Evedro's voice crackled in over the comm lines. His communications set was a little out of date but at least it worked. Returning it to the ship's locker, he removed several harnesses. A bit old fashioned but the got the job done.

"Confirmation: Salvage claim and notice of ship location sent," Carrion said in its usual emotionless tone as the Blue Crow glided slowly past the derelict's side, scanners sweeping the surface for possible convenient points of entry. "Statement: Automated reply from Parthia station received, confirming arrival of data packet at their end," Carrion added after some minutes of silence.

The Blue Crow wandered along the hull of the derelict for about half an hour before finding something promising, in the form of a small docking port that had apparently been shot open. Plenty of room for a ship's boat to enter, though parking a destroyer in it would be difficult... and the bay's ability to hold air was definitely in question due to the lack of doors.

"Statement: Salvage claim beacon has been deployed. Access point located, awaiting confirmation from hangar," Carrion announced. By now the Blue Crow was close enough to the derelict that it nearly took up half of the bridge's "window" screens... the forward-facing half, to be more precise.

Once the ship's boat was prepared for launch and all loose items removed from the hangar bay, the atmosphere was cycled out and the hatch in the Crow's underside opened up to the void of space. Charon floated out lazily before Evedro engaged the engines, sending the tiny craft for an encounter with the derelict giant. A craft repurposed for living quarters for one person wasn't perhaps the most comfortable passenger craft for an additional two people in full vacuum combat gear, but it was better than "swimming" across.

The view from the cockpit was rather monotonous - just the solid wall of the derelict gradually growing larger, details on the hull coming into view... vent ports, the occasional point defense nest, minor battle scoring...

The boat was perhaps half-way to the docking port when the whole craft shook as if it had just collided with a wall. From the cockpit, it would look as though Charon had hit upon some energy field, judging by the bright blue energy discharges seen dancing over the viewport and the onboard systems going crazy. Whatever the field was, it didn't stop the boat, but it sure as hell didn't do its maneuverability any favours. The thruster controls had become somewhat unresponsive, and the impact had thrown the course off a bit to the side, from the open docking bay door to a very solid ship hull.

Some course correction may be called for...

"Ferryman of the dead huh..." Evedro muttered. "Elizabeth! Yurij! Things aren't looking too good. You're going to need you to prepare to jump. I'm going to try and give you a clear facing on the hull so get ready."
Turning his attention back to the control console, Evedro brought the engine power down to a minimum. Sweat began to form as their momentum continued to hurl them towards the capital ship. Evedro's eyes lit up as he remembered seeing a sizable hole blasted in a nearby section of hull. If I can get Charon to land in that she might survive this little cruise...
Gently, Evedro tried to coax the stubborn thrusters to tip Charon towards the hole. He only had a few moments to correct their trajectory. With their destination roughly lined up, he cut the engines out completely. Hopefully she wouldn't explode on impact. With slow cautious steps he made his way to the back.
"Alright guys. Suits secure? You got everything you brought with you? Good!"
Removing a panel from the wall he pulled what looked to be a handful of random wires out. Picking several of them he disabled the security on the Airlock door. Keeping an eye on the incoming surface, he rushed the two into the airlock. "On the count of three release the airlock and jump. One...two...... three!" he yelled, joining them in their evacuation.

The hull breach may have been relatively close, but performing course corrections under extreme pressure was hard enough without having to factor in angle and speed of approach, or indeed any more advanced maneuvers.

The boat grazed the larger ship's hull some distance from the breach.
It deflected off the hull.
The boat's thrusters did not take to the impact well.
The "outer" side thrusters fired off a few seconds after impact.
The extra burn accelerated the boat back towards the hull.
They also gave it quite a spin on the way there.
You jumped.

Elizabeth's landing was best, though not perfect. She managed to aim for a corridor and after bouncing off a wall got her magnetic grapples to stop any further flying about. Evedro wasn't quite as graceful, bouncing several times more before finding something to actually grab and stay in place.

Yurij, well... the spin threw off his aim and sent him towards the rim of the hull breach, where the metal was rough and jagged from whatever had damaged it. One conspicuously long bit of metal looked to be particularly nasty, and straight in the flight path.

Yurij heard a clang.
Everyone else watching saw Yurij approach the metal spike at considerable speed, make contact with it... and stop, before lazily drifting back, leaving the sharp tip of the spike a bit blunted. It seemed it lacked the punch to get through the armour, though the force of the impact would sting like all hell.

Then Charon crashed into the other side of the hull breach. It was a curious thing, watching one large piece of metal plowing into another, far larger piece of metal, in complete silence. The mind insisted there should be an ungodly amount of noise, but there wasn't the slightest ring as the boat embedded itself some 10 metres into one of the decks, sending out a cloud of shrapnel it had displaced. The thrusters finally switched off.

So, you are left standing on the rim of a shallow, but quite wide breach in the armour plating of the giant ship, spread out - Elizabeth and Evedro in separate corridors, Yurij floating a short distance from the hull. You are alive, for the most part, though the boat that brought you here won't be flying anywhere any time soon. And if you had any doubts to your vital status, you heard Carrion's voice in the commlinks a few moments later.

"Query: Blue Crow to Boarding Party, what is your status?"

Dazed, Evedro gave the surroundings a quick glance. Elizabeth was nowhere in sight and Yurij had been in his line of sight but had drifted off since.
"Th....s Eved... *screech*" Evedro attempted to communicate but was interrupted by a sharp feedback. "Great just what fucking need right now" he muttered. A vacuum was not the best place to be fiddling with your HEV. Carefully pulling his arm into the main body of the suit, he adjusted the Intercom.
"Hello? Testing, testing... this is Evedro. Can anyone hear me? I've landed on one of the outer decks in the breach. Elizabeth is nowhere in sight and Yurij is drifting somewhere, I lost track of him."

The shock.
A thin stream of blood pours from the mouth.
Eyes open, vision plagued and narrow, the screen doubling for a while.
And the ship - further and further from the grasp. The Russian lengthens his arm, as if desperately trying to catch anything.
"??? ?????... ??? ???? ????????.", he whispers silently to himself, his head pulsing. Then, he turns the helmet's intercom on.
"Thiz iz Yurij zpeaking. Blue Crov, do ya copy?", he sneers, then spits blood, pushing the thruster-pack's button. Engine blazes with fire and Morgov gets closer to the deck. His heavy breath echoes deeply. He threads towards Elizabeth, the only squad member he could see.

"Statement: Good, you appear to have all survived," Carrion said. Yurij had time to make his way over to the hull breach relatively near Elizabeth's position, and the light of burning thrusters would've likely drawn Evedro out of his corridor as well.

"Troubled Statement: It would appear the derelict's debris deflection shield is still active. That is the likely cause of the trouble you have experienced with docking. The Crow's own shield should be able to nullify the effect, however, a shield for a ship of this size would require more power output than what sensors are reading. Advice: Proceed with caution."

Back on the bridge of the Blue Crow, the doctor and the captain were treated to a display of the derelict with a rough structural analysis. The away team had to make do with Carrion's directions.

"Statement: The outer hull of the ship appears to have only a few corridors running through it. I have identified one most likely to lead to the bunker at the ship's core. Request: If you proceed ten metres keel-wise from miss Elizabeth's position and from there thirty metres aft-wise, you should find the corridor."

"Confirmation: Understood, away team. Will be monitoring communications, report anything out of the ordinary."

It took a few minutes getting around to the proper entrance way - mostly because you had to keep a hold on Evedro's vacc-suit to keep him from floating off. The passageway's interor was also devoid of gravity, so keeping a hold on the magnetic grip-less party member was still something of a good idea.

As you went deeper into the structure, helped on occasion by instructions from Carrion, you couldn't help the feeling that these corridors weren't exactly meant for crew. You hadn't seen any life support systems, and little in the way of bulkheads - though the ones you did see were closed, forcing a change of route more than once due to the lack of power. There wasn't much sign of any crew either, no belongings or markings to help you find your way around. Without Carrion's mapping, you probably would've got lost quickly.

Between the winding corridor and the size of the ship, it took you a good while to reach the inner regions. Just under two hours at a steady walk, in fact. Eventually, though, you reached what looked for all intents and purposes to be the bunker structure that Carrion had detected. The main giveaway was a very solid-looking airlock door that now barred your way. Unlike the bulkhead doors you'd seen before, though, this one appeared to have power, if the blinking light the control panel next to it was any indication.

'To the sides' ordered Elizabeht, placing herself right next to the panel, so that when the airlock opens, no one would stand in front of it. It was a common mistake to assume that there was nothing inside, way to often fatal. Only then, she tried to command the massive gate to open.

The caution, however well-founded, proved unnecessary in the end. The airlock panel lit up a friendly green with the words, "cycling airlock", and a few moments later the heavy door opened. Stepping inside, you quickly felt the tug of artificial gravity - quite the improvement for Evedro, at least. The interior was well-lit, clean, and looked in far better shape than the outside corridor. The interior panel worked well enough as well, and soon the airlock cycled again, opening up out to the corridors of the ship bunker.

It looked more like a luxury liner. The walls were panelled with what looked like dark wood, the floor appeared to be some sort of polished stone... or it could be imitations, but it looked damn fancy at first glance anyway. The halls were well-lit too, and judging by what your suit sensors told you, they had a breathable atmosphere. Whatever happened to make the ship a derelict, it certainly didn't seem to have had an effect on the bunker.

***

Meanwhile, outside the ship, the Blue Crow had taken its sweet time getting through the derelict's debris shield and pulling up next to the hull breach where Charon had buried itself. Once the remaining two crew members had finished preparing the salvage drones under Carrion's directions, the AI set to work extracting the ship boat. Around the time the away team got to the airlock, the extraction work looked half-done.

'Elizabeth to the Blue Crow. We are inside the bunker structure, and I'll be dammed, but it does not look like a warship at all. More like a luxury liner. Still no survivors or marks of battle, on the inside, at least. There might some problems with communications later on, so we will postpone further investigation until we receive instructions from you.'

Checking that his shotgun was loaded with Slugs, Evedro did his best to stay behind Elizabeth as they marched down the corridor. Hopefully at the center of this bunker would be a stronger communications relay to send messages out from.

Initially, there weren't all that many doors to check. The corridor had no side offshoots and turned off sharply to the right before too long, then left, left again, and right once more after some more time before it seemed to reach the inner structure proper. Lamps in the ceiling provided warm yellow lighting to the hallways, and though the suits impaired your hearing of external sounds, you thought there was even music playing in the background.

Eventually the corridor brought you to an intersection, a small room with corridors leading out in four directions. It even had some quite large tropical potted plants in the corners. While you were pondering which way to go, however, you saw something approaching down the corridor to the left of your entrance point. It was far away for the moment, and looked like a shiny bronze sphere perhaps a foot across, hovering casually in the air. It didn't seem in any particular hurry to close with you, but it was approaching at what would probably amount to a calm walk if it had legs.

Evedro stood entranced for a moment, just watching the orb get closer. A slight wave of lightheadedness broke the spell, as he took a few steps back. "Umm, given the current condition of the ship, I don't expect that thing to be too friendly. Might I suggest we pick another path to take before it reaches us?"

'We're doing it by the book, Evandro' replied Elizabeth harshly, raising the gauss rifle, but still not placing the finger on the trigger. 'Stand where you are!' she shouted towards the orb, not really hoping that it would respond.

Yurij didn't comment on the orb's nor Evedro's behavior. He just knelt in the stance, pointing with the rifle's barrel at the object, as it was closing in slowly. He carefully placed his finger on the trigger, waiting.

The orb, quite surprisingly, came to a halt some 15 metres off. This close, you could see it wasn't a smooth sphere, but had several raised ridges covered with decorative etchings. It also had a camera lens pointed in your general direction. It did a few small loops in the air before coming to a halt, the lens turning from side to side as it (apparently) looked at each of you in turn.

"Hello," it said suddenly, in an artificial voice that still somehow managed to come across as cheerful and friendly. It also dipped a bit as it spoke before returning to face height.

Elizabeth blinked, heavily surprised. Of all things, she did not see that one coming.

'What are you? What are you doing here? Where is the crew?' she managed to mutter eventually, but not even half as confidently as she would want to.

The sphere hovered in place for a few moments before dipping again as it spoke. "Welcome aboard the Morning Star. Follow me, please."

That said, it floated past you and down the corridor opposite the one you'd entered through.

Elizabeth glared at the bot suspiciously. It could be simple ship-guid- for a vessel of this size, it would not be unlikely to have some of these... But of course, it could also be something far more dangerous.

'Bot, where do you intend to lead us?' she asked loudly and clearly.

The spherical bot looped around at the question, coming back to you and hovering a few metres away. "Please direct all inquiries to ship's master Grey. This way, please," it replied.

Either it was purposefuly avoiding giving a clear answer, or it just wasn't designed to hold a proper conversation... for now, at least, it was waiting to see if there were any other questions before it headed off again.

Elizabeth shrugged.

'This thing might want to lead us into a trap. Let's just ignore it and push on with our own search, people' she ordered. 'I apologize, but we have more pressing matter at hand now, bot.'

The sphere rotated a little on its forward axis as Elizabeth spoke... then, a few moments after she finished, the lights in the surrounding corridors cut out, leaving only the small room with any amount of lighting.

"I'm afraid I must insist," the bot said, though the voice was far less artificial this time. "I would not be a good host to my passengers if I let armed thugs roam around wherever they willed. If you would lay down your arms and follow this drone, I give you my guarantee you'll come to no harm. Otherwise... well, security was dispatched the moment you stepped through the airlock. If you're more than just common pirates, we may be able to resolve this on friendly terms yet," the voice went on, calm and steady.

"Your choice, miss. I would appreciate it if you made it quickly."

'Lay down my arms and be led somewhere?' Elizabeth chuckled. 'Sorry, ain't gonna happen. Either we are keeping our weapons, or we are not going anywhere.'

The sphere hovered for a moment, then bobbed briefly in what might've been a shrug. "I'm a reasonable person, to some extent. You will unload and stow your weapons, then. A gesture of good will. I'm sure you can see the sense in not waving loaded weapons around on a ship with civilians present."

'Listen, whatever or whoever you are: I. Am. Not. Becoming. Defenceless. Period' uttered Elizabeth. Maybe she was not in ODT any more, but some habits persisted. 'I know how to handle my rifle safely, fear not. I won't hurt anyone, unless you give me a good reason to.'

"No reasoning with some people, I suppose," the drone replied as it disappeared down one of the unlit corridors. A few moments later, the lights in the room cut out as well. "I've taken the liberty of engaging security lockdown. If you disarm before security arrives, you'll still not be harmed," the drone added as a parting comment from the darkness.

Of course, you still had suit flashlights, but that wasn't quite the same as nice, brightly lit corridors...

"It didn't say to give up our weapons just unload and secure them. Seems simple enough." Evedro sighed, ejecting the slugs from his gun. So much for relying on the one with military training. Stowing his gun in it's holster he strode ahead of the group after the security orb.
"If you want to get shot on sight be my guest. I'm going ahead so we can get things underway."

Elizabeth remained silent for a few moments, calming herself. 'One thing I am sure' she muttered finally, unloading her rifle, and slung it over her shoulder 'I am not putting other's lives in danger just because I am too stubborn to understand that there is no other way. Yuri, secure your weapons' she ordered. 'And, Evedro, thank you for remind me of that.'

You managed to catch up with Evedro just around the corner - he'd been waiting with a (the?) drone, which now bobbed a little in the air as it saw you approach.

"There you are," it stated, again in that cheerful artificial voice. "This way, please."

Though you couldn't quite shake the feeling of being watched even as the lights came back on, you had little choice but to follow the drone as it led you deeper into the bunker. Further from the bunker hull the corridor layout became far more regular, with nice, even intersections, doors lining both sides of the hallways. Still, for all the luxury, the place seemed empty... a ghost ship, for lack of a better term. Of course that raised the question of who the drone was leading you to...

That last matter at least was cleared up before long. The corridor you'd been following opened into a vast hall that apparently served as a tropical garden. The shift from rich browns of the walls to vibrant greens of leaves and just about every other colour imaginable on the flowers was a bit jarring, to say the least. There was some sort of mist in the air too, judging from the tiny droplets of water collecting on your visors. You even could spy colourful birds lurking among some of the branches. You weren't getting to walk through the garden ground floor, though - the drone had led you out onto a catwalk suspended a good way above the "forest" floor. The catwalk widened out to a large platform roughly in the middle of the chamber, and in near one of the edges of that stood a small table with chairs around it - as well as a person.

The drone departed you quickly once you reached the central platform, and the "host" walked up to greet you. He was a fairly tall man with a wiry built, gaunt even, with slightly graying black hair. He was dressed in what looked for all intents and purposes like a naval flag officer's uniform, but lacked any distinctions of rank.

"Well... it would seem my guests have arrived? Welcome," he said, in the same steady, refined voice you'd heard before from the security drone. "My name is Alexander Grey, and I am priveleged to hold the position of the Morning Star's ship master and captain. Now, as curious as I am to know who comes to visit me all the way out here, I must first ask something else..." the friendly tone faded to a colder one, "What the bloody hell are you doing on my ship, armed like you're going to a war?"

Elizabeth exhaled heavily, looking at Gray with mixture of irritation and surprise. When she spoke, she was speaking slowly, carefully pronouncing every word. There was something about mister Gray that made her think that he might as well be totally nuts.

'Listen, this ship, in case you have not noticed is a wreck. Salvage. And we are from salvage team. We claimed this hull as ours, suspecting that there is nothing alive in it, and you have proven as wrong. We were sent to investigate what's inside this super-capital of yours before proper military arrives to secure this whole mess here. So, dare to explain to us what in the God's name are you dong here? What happened here?'

She slowly moved closer to him, hoping to get close enough that she could- if it comes to that- immobilize him.

Grey looked genuinely surprised at the claims. "Salvage? My dear girl, that term applies to ownerless ships. As you can see, the Morning Star's owner is very much alive still. I've been with her since she was built and launched," he replied with no small amount of pride in his voice and a sweeping gesture at the hall you were currently in. "As for my being here, well... You know the phrase, the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing? I'm afraid one of my... adversaries, for lack of a better term, provoked a conflict of jurisdiction with the Second Fleet. Secrecy can be a two-edged sword, sadly. I was left with no choice but to defend my operation and the people under my care aboard this ship," he explained, pride giving way to humility in his tone.

Elizabeth sighed.

'For out safety sake, we won't dwell on this whole infighting thing' she stated. 'Since this ship is owned, you will deal with Navy as soon as it arrives here... it's not like you're going to get away in this wreck. And, please, we won't pester you any more, we will just return to our ship and put a salvage claim on some other wreck. This place is not lacking in them, really. So, please, release us, and we will be on our way, okay?'

Grey laughed, shaking his head lightly. "Forgive me... unless you contacted the Legion directly, it's going to be a while before any force comes out here to investigate. Red tape and all that. It grows thicker the further away you get from the heartlands. That is probably for the best though, as it might provoke another, ah... conflict of jurisdiction if they were to arrive here now," Grey smiled with a shrug. "But as you've so helpfully pointed out, my ship is currently not in a state to travel. While I'm working on the issue as quickly as I can, I cannot leave the work that brought me here unfinished. I'd appeal to your sense of ethics to assist, but I think if I offered more, ah... concrete rewards in turn, you would be more inclined to help?"

"I do hope the crash landing did not cause much further damage to my ship. I would be very... upset if it did," Grey said with a sigh, shaking his head. "It does present a problem though, true. Hmm... Well, I've retained power flow to one of the keel docking bays for emergency use. 'Hmm, sir, that's by the way, but tell me, what happened to the rest of this ship crew?' asked Elizabeth, removing the helmet and scratching her head. 'Given the size of your vessel, the crew should count in thousands, and we are still yet to find a single body... or living man other than you.'

Grey laughed briefly, shaking his head. "Automation, my dear girl. Automation," he explained, tapping his temple lightly. "I do not have access to the Federation budget on the scale of some more... official operations, and so I cannot afford a live crew and their wages. I am, however, resourceful enough to be able to maintain this ship and a sufficient crew of drones and autonomous units with my own efforts."

"In short, if you want living crew... well, you're looking at it," he said with a smile. "Of course there are still my passengers, but there's not that many of them at present, and their quarters are in another area of this core."
