Title: Hackmaster 4e IC - Quest for the Unknown
Post by: Malek Deneith on February 17, 2012, 05:06
Rogahn the Fearless and Zelligar the Unknown. Even the youngest in Garweeze Wurld heard their names, and elders and sages speak about those two legendary figures with respect or even awe...

You have heard parts of the story before. Rogahn was a great warrior, his reputation spreading far and wide. Zelligar was as famous, though his cause the renown came from his mastery of art of magic. No one knows how the two men came together but whatever circumstances of their meeting it resulted in a strong bond of friendship forming between them, a bond that would last for ages. Not long after the pair disappeared from the view of civilization, and rumors started floating about them constructing some sort of hideaway, deep in the wilderness. Some even started whispering that their common motive was greed, or some evil goal. In any case they jointly led a life in seclusion, only occasionally venturing away from their secret stronghold to add to their reputations.

It wasn't until many years later, when from lands to the northwest came a great gnome-titan invasion threatening to engulf the Meletian Kingdom, that the duo surfaced yet again. Rogahn leading a small army of hirelings, and Zelligar wielding his fearsome magics faced the gnome-titans in a battle in a narrow pass, and forced the invasion back. Before they returned to their place of solitude they were richly rewarded for their deeds, and while most agree that bulk of the fortune was spent on furthering the construction of their hideaway, rumors said a good amount remained.

But the most exciting part is the most recent one. Last year Rogahn and Zelligar apparently decided to join an expedition into lands of Gnome Portectorates. Taking most of their hirelings with them, they disappeared into the lands of hated gnome folk, on a great adventure, which some think might've been asked by the very gawds themselves. Lately a word of a great battle in the gnome-titan lands reached your ears, along with speculation that Rogahn and Zelligar met their demise there. If that's true then their secret base would've been nearly unguarded and ripe for exploration... and ripe for the looting.

It's no wonder that when a passing grel hunter with a scar through his eye - how such an individual managed to let the guard let him in better left unknown - offered you to sell a map leading to what he believed to be the fabled hideout of the duo you decided to risk the chance of the map being fake and bought it after pooling your money. Banding together you quickly organized yourself and went on a journey, hoping that nobody else would find the place before you do...

***

Several days later you find yourselves near the end of the journey. Apparently during the last year civilization creeped upon the place Rogahn and Zelligar call home, since not far from where your map was leading you, you stumble upon a village - a collection of few small houses with a shoddy inn, barely capable old cleric and a marketplace that's visited by merchants roughly each Run'mar - that got settled lately. You spend the night, and the next day - Flur'mar, the useless day - before finally leaving early on the first day of new year. It's Sa'Mar of the First Week of Haar'Kiev year 174 T.R., the New Year's Day and the first day of Spring. The midday passed not long ago, and it's still a bit chilly, but you're warmed by the thought that the threacherous, narrow pathway you and your pack animals are traversing should lead you to your goal - a place marked on the map with the rune 'Q', at least according to what Maoun, being the only one able to read tells you.

"Oh, good lord, why should we leave so early? My head hurts like hell..." — mumbled Michael. He reached a metal flask, shaken it, unscrewed the cap, turned the flask upside-down and shaken it again. "Oh, fine. Gotta find some booze." — he said. "Where can I find some gawddam' rum here?" — he shouted, addressing no one in particular.

Maoun glided along as the party marched through the pass, his wings a shimmering blur behind him. The sun, still high, beat down on his pale ivory skin; a stark contrast to his earthen robes. His hair too was white, even more so than his skin. The brisk air of the canyon kept him alert, always watching the surroundings and the skies. Yes, the skies were the home of Maoun's greatest foe: Birds. It has always been unknown to himself why birds assault him instinctively, but the blighted things were a constant menace.
"So... did anyone hear anything relevant to our target?," The silence, apart from his companion's sobered ranting, had gotten the better of him, "I heard that there are guards remaining, parting gifts from Rogahn and Zelligar. That and, if the rumors are to be believed, the complex is only two stories high; three if you count the roof. Though if you ask me I suspect will be some underground levels as well." The lack of a reaction gave Maoun pause, one thing he hated was wasting his breath. If he wanted to talk to himself, he could do it in his own head. With an mischievous grin he continued "I've also heard that the blighted place is haunted; riddled with spooks. So much so that even the very walls will speak to you."

"Well, I heard" — said Michael — "that both big guys are sitting there, and something about pools". The guy that told me this was really serious about those pools. He was also really drunk, however. Hey, guys, do you have some ale with you? Looks like I'm having one big bad hangover."

"I didn't hear nothing about no fools. Still, the road might be interesting, all the graves of adventurers who couldn't quite hack it... I think it's supposed to be one in five that doesn't come back alive? Still, it would be such a shame to lose one of you." Jace looks around. "As long as I don't have to go underground... hmm, that reminds me, did I remember to pack my powders?"

Sho Lee scoffs.  He does not care to "socialize" with the rest, as who really needs to hear what he has to say?  Words take precious time, and the less time spent on unimportant things -- like Michael's lack of booze, or Maoun's discussion of rumors, or Jace's absent-mindedness -- is more time for Sho Lee to focus on what IS important: Himself.

Lost in his own thoughts, Sho Lee trails a little behind the rest of the group.

Samuel feels his clean-shaven chin and his tidy black hair - always tidy up before an adventure, they say.  Unfortunately his physique doesn't match his looks.  Sam trudges along with the weight of his equipment bearing down on him; he gives his mule a light pat as thanks for helping to bear the load.  And he can't help but feel bit nervous after Jace's comment.  One in five...?

Samuel looks over his companions, trying to reassure himself of their competence.  They appear up to the task, but what about him?  He won't be the one in five... "No," Sam mutters, "nobody will be."  He can only hope.  Better not dwell on it, just get back on the subject of this complex.

"Yeah, uhh... I think I remember hearing something about pools.  There's a room full of them... somewhere in the place."  It doesn't take his mind off the danger, but he continues. "And the complex apparently isn't complete, or at least some parts of it."  Sam pauses to think for a bit.  "Also... Hmm..." Back in thought, he doesn't finish talking.

While you talk the pathway you're traversing turns, and you see that a few hundred yards ahead it ends, leading to a craggy outcropping of weathered limestone. In it you can barely make out an outline of a cave-like opening, hidden beneath various vegatation.

The appearance of the rocky outcropping had obviously gotten the majority of the party riled, though for what he wasn't sure. His Emphkrin tattoo wasn't alerting him to anything yet so there was no clear present danger. Though if things do get dicey, it would not do for Emuleio to go running off and loose all of my gear. Looping back, Maoun landed on the back of his pack mule, Emuleio. Double checking the straps on all his bags and containers, he gave a sigh of content. Giving his companion a scratch behind the ears, Maoun looked hesitantly at down the crevasse.

"I'm... not sure how you are hearing my thoughts exactly, if you are. The Emphkrin tattoo merely lends itself to those in close proximity of me who have been around long enough for me to make a connection. And all that really is is a heads up to any immediate and dangerous hostile intent as it approaches. Convenient, eh?"

"Jace, you're welcome to wait here for us to return."  Sam finds Jace's worries to be quite silly; what sort of adventurer won't go in a cave?  Although... to be honest, Sam also can't help but admire someone who chooses such a profession despite their fears.

"I'll even let you in on a tiny bit of my share of the loot," Sam says, hoping to coax Jace into continuing by embarrassing him a bit.

Jace stammers his reply. "I do not do well in tight spaces. Caves, crowded common rooms, markets during harvest season, the library in the Cathedral of Yak, actual deathtraps where the walls close in around you... okay, I haven't been to those last two, but still no thanks. Give me wide, open spaces any day of the week. And why would I want to share boots?"

After a minute or two you arrive at the end of the path. Behind a curtain of of vines - which should be easy enough to move past or clear away using Michael's sword - you can see a beggining of an entrance corridor, wide enough for two men, ending with aa large wooden door. On the ground before the door there's a plain woven mat with some writing sewn on it.

As Sam steps on the mat to check the door a trap door he didn't notice opens below him...

No, no, wait, that's not how it happened.

The thief gets to work and luckily for him there are no trap doors to fall in. He also doesn't find any traps on the door, though he noticed that bits of the wood chipped of the frame, suggesting it was forced open before. Currently though it is locked again, but not for long - the key found fits and easily opens the door. Beyond it you can see a corridor extending into the darkness, a bit inwards you can barely make out outline of a pair of alcoves - one on each side - but farther than that it's too dark for you to see.

Sam thinks for a moment.  "I don't have any rope.  Someone here have a rope?  Hmm... I guess we should be close to you for your tattoo thing, as well."  Looking over the situation once more, he comes up with a new plan: "Michael, you should be in the front, and Jace, you can hide behind him.  Sho Lee... I guess you can stay on the right in the middle, next to Jace.  I'll be behind Sho Lee, and Maoun, you can be behind Jace, and we'll have the animals in the back."

Having sketched a rough estimate of the cave entrance, Maoun turned back the party still figuring out how to tie their asses together. "Men? Take one end of the rope. Tie it to one of the mules. Then loop the cord through the back of Emuleio's saddle, then tie it to the other mule. We can adjust the length should we need more space later." Okay, I'm on it."  Sam grabs the rope that Jace offered up, and he gets to work.  First Sam ties the rope to his own mule, who is cooperative enough. "Good boy..."  Then he moves on to Emuleio and loops the rope through the saddle as instructed.  Now moving on to Michael's mule, Sam ties the rope again, hopefully locking the three mules together.

"Alright, we're ready to go."  With the task done, Sam assumes his position in the formation behind Sho Lee.

As you stand, discuss, and prepare your next move you suddenly feel a tingle through Maouns' telepathic bond. This tingle is immediatly followed by a savage roar - both of which added together give Michael just enough time to duck forward and to the left, into the nearest niche and barely avoiding collision with a creature running out of the darkness. Said creature, a humanoid, swings a battle axe at the space where Michael stood just seconds ago. Second later said humanoid notices his miss and straightens itself, looking for a new target. You notice the ugly, brutish features of it's face and body... as well as the horrible, repulsive smell.

Jace froze - the walls, the were moving, out to get him. Seeing no exit dropped on his knees, covering his head with his hands and started to moan quietly.
Sho Lee Wu started to go through routines his masters taught him with so much effort, causing the ogre to pause - more in confusion than actual fear.
Michael Songsteel started to move at the creature, aiming his attack at the right arm... when a loud 'twang' could be heard. He stumbled a step backwards, pushed by something. Looking downwards he saw a quarrel sticking out of his chest, the culprit standing on the other side of the ogre.
- Why? - you could hear him mumble in confusion before he drops into a crumpled heap on the floor. Only muted repeatings of the confused 'Why?' allowed you to know he's not dead... yet.

And all of this because, startled by Sho Lee's display ogre twitched just as Samuel took his shot. Just enough for the quarrel to miss him.

Even Maoun's spell wasn't as effective this time - it seems the creature got wise to the annoying little gnat flying around and despite the wounds managed to avoid most of the flame.

"Well, we had better get Jace in working order if we want to have any hope of salvaging Michael." Maoun sighed as he drifted to ground. This was not a good start. With a hop, Maoun returned to the air. It would seem they needed to move them all somewhere where Jace could recover and in turn recover Michael. The two non-pint sized members of the party set on the task of carrying their fallen comrade to the mule. As you pick Michael up (well as Sho Lee picks Michael up, as Sam's effort is barely helping) you notice that the quarrel actually gone all the way through and the pointy end can be seen coming from the fighter's back. It takes you a while to move him to the closest mule, and as you struggle along you can see he stopped moaning in pain near the end, though all he could do was look around in confusion. As you strap him down to the mule using Sam's rope, Michael passes out.

The cool air of the open world starts to bring Jace to his senses. He sits there for a moment, then realizes that he's outside. After what can only be described as a freedomgasm, Jace realizes that one of this associates is in dire need of his assistance.

He convinces Baa to give him enough healing to keep Michael alive, (http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3395535/) and lays his hands on the exit wound. As the wounds start to cure, Jace starts giving orders.

"One of you get a fire going nice and hot. Someone else, in my backpack is a needle and thread, I want you to dig it out. Hopefully the bleeding will be stopped by Baa's intervention, but it's best to be ready just in case."

As Sho Lee and Maoun finished off the Elk, orcs charged at the party.

Sho Lee found himself in dire straits - not only he got attacked by three of the goblinoids, but one of the archers decided to help them out, and sent two arrows at the monk - thankfully one of them struck one of the orcs instead of intended target (curiously bouncing off the armor orc was wearing instead of piercing it), but the other was still heading for him.

Not far away Michael was facing two orcs of his own - one of them took a swing at him, which the warrior took on his shield. The shield cracked a bit as it was hit by an oddly familiar longsword.

Samuel managed to fire off one bolt into the charging mass, and drew his dagger just as two orcs neared him.

Jace was out of luck. He did manage to let loose his spell just as orc warriors got into melee range, but it didn't help him any as seconds later one of the orcs slashed him through the torso, sending the already wounded priest to the ground, unconscious.

Maoun got the attention of two other archers. Thankfully for them the first pair of missiles didn't find their mark, and his ascension to higher position managed to throw the aim on second salvo off... barely.

This three arrows missed Maoun, but the sprite quickly closed the distance preventing the archers from fireing another salvo.

Samuel somehow managed to avoid both enemy blows somehow and even got a stab of his own at the enemies.

The blow of the other orc that charged Jace finally fell down, and the sickening sound with which it colided with cleric's prone form spellt the end for the follower of Baa.

Meanwhile the cloak-wearing orc who's original blow brought Jace to the ground swiftly moved on to assist his two brethren fighting Michael. While his attack missed, it allowed one of the other orcs to deal a blow against wounded fighter.

Sho Lee was faring even worse - not only he evaded only one of three blows, but when he tried to retaliate one of the straps holding his backpack snapped, throwing the monk off-balance.

A wise choice considering the circumstances, but the execution left much to be desired - by choosing to simply turn and run he gave the orcs an opportunity that they didn't fail to exploit even in their sloshed state. One of them hamstrung the thief, other mauled his shoulder horribly with last one finally delivering the mercifull killing blow.

Maoun spoke few quick words in arcane words and Michael's world exploded in flames. The fighter couldn't help but scream in pain as a drop of hot white metal that just moments ago held his - now non-existant - shield together fell on his arm and burned through armor, onto the flesh. Still half-blinded by pain he took a swing with his flail and felt it connect with something.

In the meantime Sho Lee ducked and weaved away from his combatants just split-second before two more coming managed to cut him off. Few seconds later he was standing good distance away from them while they were still processing the fact that their swords hit dirt instead of a monk.

Archers didn't fare too well. Despite Jace's baleful magic finally dissipating their arrows again only nicked the flying sprite. Then again for a creature as frail as pixie-kin those nicks could add up fast.

As he turned around Sho Lee managed to get a glimpse of Michael being cut down by his own sword... of Maoun skewered by arrows when the drunk orc archers finally focused enough to get a good aim. There was no reason left to remain. So he fled. He ran as fast as he could and the sounds of pursuing orcs swiftly fell silent. He ran further, until the fatigue finally won and he tripped and fell down. And once he woke up - thankfully alone and not within hands of the orc mob - he continued, back to the village they rested in just a few hours ago. There he found sanctuary in a small local temple... and started to think what to do next...
