Think of how many builds wouldn't be possible if you couldn't run.

Thomas - really? After getting killed from full a few times by mancubi, I stopped bothering trying to fight them, but if they're that easy to dodge...

The precise example you cite is why you can't :)

The rest of this game is excellently stat-tracky-achievementy-unlocky. It puzzles me that there's two separate ranking systems and one of them is just for flavor. I like Nameless's idea.

Example of crazy fun mode: each demon rank unlocked opens a new option in a new menu:

"Play as a monster"

(imagine having to select [Y/n] every time you rocket jumped?)

As it's the alt-fire and hard to mix up with regular fire, it wouldn't really be necessary for rocketjumping.

I stand reminded about Mancubus attack patterns, but that doesn't make me less unhappy about being killed from full health and pristine armor in a maze...

I did not know running affects hurtfloor damage. It still makes sense to me that less travel speed means less time in lava means less damage taken, though... unless the damage is from your foot hitting the floor?

I'm sure most people have died at least once because there was a big wall right there when a mancubus shot at them. I honestly don't know why they shoot THREE clustered boomy shots when they shoot two in the source. The kill out of nowhere from 100% is very rogue-like and thus can be aggravating; as it stands I'm afraid to even engage Mancubi at all.

Does quicker movement speed cause less damage when moving on acid or lava? I'd think lighter feet would cause less contact, and I'd also think that if a marine isn't focusing on combat, he'd be incredibly motivated to get OFF whatever he's standing on and pick up his feet a little, especially if he's got protective boots buying him time.

Would a sophisicated weapon like a Revenant's Launcher (or a BFG10k?) come with a proximity warning if where you aim catches you in the radius? A meta-prompt that lets you change your mind about firing (or not) would be neat.

This isn't a cry to make the game easier, except maybe the Mancubi. Just some thoughts and suggestions. Any others?

Agreed. At my current rate I wouldn't be surprised if I jumped from Cacodemon to Hell Knight. I might have tacked on 'Baron of Hell', too, if it were likely I'd kill 400 more of them before I shot 9 mancubi to almost dead and then tapped them with my finger or a bullet. (Granted, I have trouble with that with every build that's gotten me to Hell.)

Why no Revenant? Or Pain Elemental, or Lost Soul, or former sergeant captain commando? More importantly, why no rewards for demon ranks?

I would like to be able to be a Former Sergeant Sergeant, if only for a little while.

Is there even a reason most of the layouts encourage the formers to pick up those medkits? It makes it a coin toss: either you'll get them, or enemies will pick them up and make you rage when they use them up. Barring the times you aren't lucky and nail them when they decide not to heal.

In a similar vein:

Power Shield
Armor
Inventory text: Some sort of fancy futuristic armor... the visor is very shiny.
Effect: Negates all damage/very high armor rating. Durability is something low - 50%, prevents up to 10 or 15 damage, whatever. Sits on you at zero/reduced effectiveness when broken. If you avoid getting hit for 20 or so turns, it regains its defense and begins to somewhat rapidly recharge.

Inspiration is sort of obvious. Something in this vein could be prettty cool - a great armor that reduces the risk of taking potshots, dueling imps and formers, or getting unlucky with splash, but coupled with it is a frailty that lasts until after combat.

0.9.9.2 / Re: [U|AoH|91%|8|YASD] nanofibre cybernetic armour
« on: March 07, 2011, 13:33 »
Keep it if you want, but nanofibre cybernetic armor isn't that much of a long shot if you want to try reproducing it.

Save scumming is kind of crooked. It's why it's called 'scumming'.

If you want my opinion, delete the save and walk away with a lesson. See all those small medpacks? You could have been tanking around with 75%-100% health and avoided this.

Discussion / Re: Marks of Shame

This could be integrated with the ignominious history provided at the end of each mortem.

e.g. instead of '50 were killed':

13 were killed by hellspawn.
1 was killed by something unknown.
7 had luck that proved fatal. (lava lever/phase instadeath/killed from 100%/dead on stairs or invul/zerk)
6 didn't make good use of their resources. (dying with tons of medpacks/forgetting about armor/on a damage floor with an envirosuit, or without wearing boots in their inventory beforehand/with a fully-loaded unique or BFG in their inventory/maybe running dry of ammo in non-MAc)
7 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual. (mark of impulsiveness)
9 cocksure bastards got in over their heads. (maybe running out of ammo/dying within x turns of a special level)
4 couldn't figure out when to run. (100% kills until death level, killed by last enemy on level which was M/V/R/died with a homing phase in a dangerous demon cave or similarly bad place)
...
And 3 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide. (mark of clumsiness, recklessness, idiocy)

Of course there should be some sort of one-liner in the 'current' mortem to tell you which statistic this YASD boosted.

I've earned remarkably few, myself, though I only have a few dozen mortems.

+1

The Crossbow should do something different when Berserked, too... if it's possible to have something fire five projectiles.

I really don't think we need another medal category to separate the elite from the uber elite.

I was kidding. ;)

Stuns for 1d1 seconds, then?

I sense Finesse abuse.

Bug Reports / Re: [0.9.9.2] UAC Star not avarded

It is logic.

EDIT: Say you did a speed run with some people and you ended 2nd. You'll get a silver medal, but not automatically a bronze medal together with it.

Whereas you would get the in-game achievements for finishing at all on this difficulty and any that are lower. Like Halo, I guess.
