ROFLMAO! seriously though, i'd love to have a go at this 'wizard mode' to check some stuff about the game i don't know yet ;)

on another note.. sign up for the wiki page and start up more strategy guides! and also help me with the markup of wiki pages.. i never edited wiki pages before and i can't figure out how to get an index for my strategy guide to appear :S.

I always thought that Eagle Eye was quite useless...

actually, i like to get 1 level of eagle eye.. for the same reason as Ultimate Carl: increasing accuracy with coward tactics. But i think the 2nd level is worthless allready... at lvl1 the hit ratio for coward tactics is quite good allready. This combo is particularly usefull against arachnotrons and former human commanders you can't evade.. they don't hit you much, but you still get most of your hits in on them.

offcourse, if you use Cat Eye you probably don't need Eagle Eye much..

Pre-0.9.9 / YAVP again.. no Cat Eye this time!

this was my 2nd try at not using Cat Eye (not counting my first couple of games, cause i had no clue then :D) and it went rather well. But it did show me how overpowered Cat Eye really is. Without it, there's no creeping up on that Baron of Hell or Hell Knight and shooting him without fearing retaliation. No running away from cacodemons and arachnotrons before they get close enough to see you.

offcourse, you get to choose 2 other skills early in the game that i'd usually not pick till i get to clvl 3. but you have to think a lot more about what skill you're going to get next, and what strategy you will use for hellish cities. Even Hell's Arena got (slightly) more challenging :)

edit: oh yeah, done the Wall and Spider's Lair without Cat Eye for the first time too!! but damn the wall is hard without cateye.. spider's lair is only a bit harder than usual.

Looks nice! i've allready contributed some stuff :D

i was tempted to start the Strategy Guides section, but i think i'll need to compile a document that actually makes some sense first instead of posting random tips and tricks 0.o

using a strategy is one thing, explaining it to others is completely different (and much harder >.<)

30th game and 4th win, i passed the 10% :)

anyway, this is maybe one of my luckiest games.. i found an advanced chaingun just after i finished the Halls of Carnage, and i found an extended plasma rifle on level 15 or so. both proved to be extremely usefull, and i overcharged the plasma rifle (60 ammo!) on level 19 just before entering Phobos Arena. also, i never saw so many rockets and power cells generated on the lower levels before! i think i must have left dozens of rockets and hundreds of power cells behind cause i just couldn't carry them all :)

Bug Reports / 2 bugs [FIXED]
« on: November 26, 2005, 03:42 »
running DoomRL version 0.9.8, win version (with the mp3's) on win98se

Bug 1: when pulling levers, enemies can be generated on walls. it has only happened to me once so far (that i know off). enemies generated on walls can't be shot, but they can be targeted.. i'm not sure if rockets or the BFG would hurt an enemy on a wall, didn't have the chance to find out. the enemy i encountered (a former human sergeant btw) seemed to be able to move away from the wall, after which he couldn't re-enter it (i tried to lure him there, but he never got back at the spot in the wall he was spawned at)

Bug 2: I've seen a lever that was generated in a wall. also happened to me only once. i couldn't get to the lever, it was treated as a wall for me (same as the enemy in a wall was treated as a wall when shooting?)

in both cases the wall was treated as a wall in every other respect: i couldn't see or shoot through it, nor enter the area it occupied.

hehe yeah i found that usefull as well :)

anyway, to answer your question about the locked doors: nope, i don't know of a better way either. i think i've tried using everything on them except the BFG. but using the BFG hardly seems like a better way ;)

After all, the main incentive for a high kill rate now is the prospect of gaining traits.

nah, man, i do it for the message "This ass-kicking marine killed all of them!"

Anyway, the demon challenges idea is great.. especially coupled with the ranking system.. the highest ranks are only accessible if you complete the demon challenges or something like that?

Discussion / Viewing the turn counter
« on: November 24, 2005, 03:49 »
err, i have no idea.. but i can tell you that certain weapons take longer to reload than others. if you've just shot a cacodemon with a double shotgun and it's still alive and close enough to shoot at you, switching weapons is probably a wise thing to do ;)

Thats a pretty cool method actually, I'd never considered that before, I think that'd work out pretty well.

I know of a few games that use such a method (well, a bit more advanced, but my post seems to sum up the major aspects of determining when somebody can do something), the best of which is mangband, a version of angband. i heard rumors about other games like it that are being developed now (i heard that maybe JADE, the 2nd version of ADOM, will have a multiplayer option).

and outside of the RL genre, think about games like the early ultima series.. they used a similar system, except it is not multiplayer. come to think of it, real time roguelikes would resemble ultima a lot actually 0.o

well, i've got an idea for multiplayer roguelikes (it's not my own btw, read it somewhere):

you use an engine with ticks, and every time a certain amount of ticks have passed, you get to take an action. ticks are based on a timer. say there are 10 ticks to a second, and a player can take a certain action after the required amount of ticks have passed:

moving 1 pace costs 10 ticks, shooting a pistol costs 5, reloading a rocket launchers costs 25 (just example figures)
if you want to move (or shoot etc), the engine checks when you have last done an action.. if 10 or more ticks have passed since your last action, you move. same goes for all the enemies you have to fight, and for your co-players. You could also stack a lot of commands, by pressing left 5 times rapidly, then watch yourself go left everytime 10 ticks have passed, untill the command buffer is empty. probably not a good idea to make the command buffer very big though, so you don't walk into a wall 300 times untill you're allowed to do something else >.<

however, i know that writing something like that means actually writing a completely new game engine. so it's probably not gonna happen here :S

Requests For Features / A few ideas...
« on: November 20, 2005, 01:09 »
ok, first off, the stunning.. love it! yeah you just stun one monster, and make it not stun the cyberdeamon and the chainsaw a great melee weapon!

now, the rest: Calm: i always stop shooting after i kill the baddies.. sometimes it may take a long time, but that's good cause i hate those breaks between killing one group of baddies and killing the next. (but seriously, there's enough plasma cells in most games.. unless you get very unlucky.)

Calculating: i know those explosion ranges.. i know the duration of berserk after taking the chainsaw and 4 berserck packs too. i play this game too much.

Splasher: you mean shooting at the ground? yeah that would be great...  offcourse, you realize that enemies could do this too right? so maybe dodging would become worthless.. hmm i think it would change the game a lot if this was implemented.

edit: how could you not notice a caco? it's a big friggin O!!

lol i would have gotten that knight too.. i love getting them all :D

anyway, didn't you get any more special levels after the wall? or did you just not enter them?

well, seems i can beat the game without camping levers as well.. ok, a little camping was involved, but it was nothing compared to my 1st win. Looks like i'm getting the hang of this game now :)

edit: oh yeah, this game started as an experiment to get all the traits (that's why the character is called pwrlvlr 0.o), but i got bored very fast this time.. i think i stopped pulling levers after level 5.
