Requests For Features / Barrels!
« on: August 13, 2009, 00:45 »
Just a thought, it would be really cool, if a barrel that gets hit by a rocket or gets caught in an explosion, changes its possition a bit. This way, moving barrels away from a lever (my, could that be the explosion lever?) wouldn't guarantee that hte lever (or you) gets caught in the explosion. In the beta, if an imp hits the marine with a fireball it is possible for him to move even two spaces. So why barrels shouldn't?

Discussion / Things about shotguns
« on: July 08, 2009, 15:19 »
Well, there is a hot discussion going on whether the shotgun are underpowered or not.
I myself think that they are too powerfull right now (as for the beta 4). But after seeing this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5uHt4AwYb4

It seems that shotguns have really high accurracy (I never though that high). Maybe we shouldn't concentrate on making the shotguns more powerfull, but more accurate, meaning, lesser spread.

Requests For Features / Head gear!
« on: June 02, 2009, 04:59 »
1) I was wondering, how come our super-futuristic space marine doesn't use a helmet and a visor? I postulate that in future releases of DooM RL there should be an inventory slot for a helmet and a visor. What will be benefits/drawbacks?

Helmet:
First of all, wearing a helmet reduces a chance that monsters will score a critical hit on you. Also they grant you some minor protection. However, wearing heavier helmets tend to reduce your perception, they slow you down a bit and even reduce your accuracy. There is even a prototype helmet from UAC, that grants user with great protections, but reduces the line of sight by two...

Visor:
Visors are important piece of marine's equipment. By using special filters, marine can see objects much sharper. It allows to spot enemies in camo much easier. More advanced visors grant user with infrared vision, making it easier to target in dark places (something like intuition, but the area is LoS + 2 spaces)

2) You might be arguing, that visors are something really powerfull. Well they, are. For example, somebody finds a visor, that increases his LoS and grant the smaller intuition. Since I have greater LoS, why the hell should I invest in Cat Eyes? I have smaller version of intuitions. Not only that, visors improved my accuracy.

Imagine a player that has found a visor and invests in other traits. On lower levels of hell, visors get destroyed. What now? We have a marine without Eagle Eye, wihtout Cat Eyes who barely can hit his enemy.
He will quickly get butchered by Arch-viles.

Still to powerfull? Make monsters more powerfull.

3) Not Doomish? It is Doomish!

Requests For Features / Cursed items
« on: May 28, 2009, 04:34 »
Now, now, I know what you think. But I don't mean cursed items that wield themselves to your hands (although it's hell outthere on Phobos). What I mean, that med-packs could contain THC, so for some turns you wouldn't actually be able to shoot anyone (peace brother!).

Plasma rifles that tend to overheat, and that leads to a disaster - explosion of the plasma rifle (although plasma rifles are still high-tech, so you get a warning and 10 seconds to drop that weapon or throw away from you).

Advanced weapons that actually aren't that advanced at all. You are ready to put your 3 damage mods into the advanced combat shotgun, and after putting the second one.. WTF, I cannot put more mods to that gun.

And the most important, Thermonuclear bomb. You are almost dead, you plant the bomb and... damn it! The detonator's gone! That's why I always take some spare bombs with me...

How to check if an item is "cursed"?
Well, if you're an Ironman or Tough as Nails, you quickly can tell what's inside a medpack.
Having finesse, it's harder for you to destroy a plasma rifle.
Whizkid? You quickly can tell how moddable a weapon is.
As for thermies, you have to be a one big son of a bitch to tell wheter the thermie will explode.

Sorry for the previous post.

Anyway, as I said before, using Ironman and TaN didn't work for me. You need to kill monsters before they start to attack you, so I chose the CE and SoB. I tried playing several times as a shotgun person (Reloader, Shottyman) but this sucks on long ranges.

Discussion / DoomRL over Telnet
« on: March 12, 2009, 15:16 »
I guess all who played Nethack tried to play it over Telnet in order to compare with other players. Ever thought doing it the same with DoomRL? It would be also great if the Angel of Bones was present. That would really bring a lot to DoomRL.

Bug Reports / Doom crushed
« on: March 06, 2009, 03:46 »
It immidiatelly exited to Windows, with no apparent messages. What file do I need to send so the problem can be checked?

I wasn't doing anything unusual, played Ultra-Violence, found Grammaton Cleric Berreta. On one level (I think it was Phobos Hell level 4) I had about 5 Arch-villes and a dozen and a half of Hell Barons (there were Arch-villes). So I decided to use my BFG (no uniques were on the level). When I wipeot everybody out and started exploring the level, BAM, the game crashed.

Damn it, this was a nearly win on Ultra-Violence, SoBx2, SoGx3, EEx2, CEx2, Ironman x2, TaN x2. With Grammaton Cleric and lots of power cells from Arch-Villes and BFG... Arrrgh!

Bug Reports / Bug: A new trait?
« on: March 03, 2009, 01:55 »
Could you tell, what the hell does that mean?

No, seriously, what is it? A new trait, Boomerang Bullets? :D
I had Cat's Eyes level 1 when this has happened.

28
Okay, so while playing doom, you get a chance to fight the hell minions, including daemons, evil spirits, and resurrected, such as former humans and revenants. If you die, do you think, that Hell would just rip you apart? Hey, why not put him back to life, he has got the gear, he knows how to use it...

Ever imagined entering a level and meeting you character that died some time ago? Just like ghosts in Nethack.

Balancing such "character zombie" would be difficult, but I think, generally this is a good idea. What do you think?

29
It just came to my head. How about, if you kill a certain "boss" monster, a part of wall would collapse or it would force a door to open? This would provide the level design would few more tricks...

Bug Reports / Language bugs ans misc.
« on: February 14, 2009, 11:03 »
This is my post-mortem file, Medium level, Angel of Berserk. I have found some bugs:

Quote
On level 16 he invaded the Unholy Cathedral!
On level 16 he found the Longinus Spear!
He then destroyed the Unholy Cathedral!

I think the order of what happened is wrong, I have found (picked-up) the Longinus Spear *AFTER* destroying the Unholy Cathedral.

Quote
Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 1 souls claim to have killed him...
1 killed the bastard and survived.

1 soul claims to have killed him...

Anyway, these are just language bugs, not so important.
