Killing Cybie with shotguns? I never believed it possible till this run. That's one more Silver badge to the ranks. Also a weird thing: a wild chainsaw was found. That and the amazing Assault Shotgun, and the crowd-control abilities of the Double Shotty -- makes the pistol fights I used to do in Marksmanship look pitiful. Overall, a good run.

I was toying with the idea of lighting in my head too, but there's one small problem with regards to the flashlight: it requires directional lighting, which in the case of rogue-likes, is a design limitation because of the lack of a sense of view direction -- one literally has a 360-degree view within the game. I'm sure there might be rogue-likes out there that pay attention to details like direction of facing, but for something fast paced like DoomRL, it might prove to be more of a nuisance than anything else.
Nevertheless, the idea of low-lighting does sound enticing, except when one follows the reasoning about the lack of inclusion of Spectres -- it becomes increasingly difficult to see what is on the screen. The closest we had to a "low-light" situation was when the Angel of Darkness (or something like that -- it existed in 0.9.8.x) was in action. It was removed in 0.9.9, but I wasn't around to hear why.

« on: December 08, 2009, 18:55 »I tried using both xterm and gnome-terminal, and the result was the same.Curiously, what distribution are you using? I've tested it on Xubuntu using both xfce4-terminal and xterm and things were fine. Maybe you were missing some option to support UTF-8 or some other encoding for your console?
(I know that the issue has been resolved -- but I think it is more of a workaround than a complete solution.)

You might need to provide more details. For example, are you using xterm, or the gnome-terminal, or something else to display the game? Are you using the default doomrl.ini file that is provided?

Definitely not suited for a "playground".I think Kornel is basing this on the first Diablo game, which is more rogue-like than we might imagine.
