Post Mortem / [0.9.1|E|Ma|MVM|16|YAAM] The Slayer Has Entered the Facility
« on: June 26, 2020, 20:30 »
So I finally managed to tear through Jupiter Hell on a melee build after countless unsuccessful attempts. I still haven't been able to crank out a victory on anything other than a marine, but this melee run was really memorable because of what happened toward the end of it.
It started out like most of my other runs. My first big melee weapon was my combat knife, which I ended up using in conjunction with my boomstick until such time as I got my hands on a machete in CalSec Central. CalSec Central, because of its bug, is why I do not have the Medal of Prejudice or the other achievement related to 100% kills, but considering that I primarily seek to kill everything on every level, I count it as a YAAM.
My weapon of choice for the run, which I would not get until Europa, was the Katana, which I ended up modding until I got my hands on an AV2 sword during my run through Io. With my Fury-based damage bonus, I had no problem ripping and tearing through Reavers, Kerberoi, and even Ravagers, though CRI bots gave me just a little trouble. I ended up going through the Black Site Vaults, which I managed to get three out of four of while rip-and-tearing through more reavers, kerberoi and ravagers. The turrets were the primary reason I packed something other than a melee weapon on this run, as one of my last attempts to go through the Vaults ended up getting me killed by turret crossfire as I didn't have a weapon capable of destroying them from afar.
The turning point of the run came soon after I entered Beyond. Somehow I managed to trigger the reactivation of the portal I used to get to Hell (I think melee kills in the central room trigger it), and instead of going to Beyond L2 like normal, I decided to take the portal, where I ended up in a place I had definitely not been to before called the Shattered Abyss. My opposition in there were primarily reavers of various kinds that I samurai'd my way through, and I had a new status effect on me called "Cursed", which I didn't know what it did. After killing everything in the level, I had to face a boss by the name of the Swordmaster, which with my build and my weapon I was able to put down with little problem before claiming his weapon, the Demonic Sword, which became my weapon for the rest of the run. The level in question reminded me quite a bit of DoomRL's Unholy Cathedral, which was kinda awesome actually.
With the Demonic Sword, I was able to tear my way through everything else in the run, including everything in Beyonds 2 and 3 and Limbo before facing off against the Summoner. By the time I faced the Summoner, my Red Armor was about to kick the bucket, so I ended up grabbing a blue armor from the two items presented to me in the Precipice of Defeat before facing off against the Summoner. The Demonic Sword made VERY quick work of the Summoner and his reavers, practically two-shotting the big bastard for my biggest victory in JH to date.

I had a feeling it had something to do with those damn bots. I just got finished with my second major JH win, which had me boomsticking my way through with Army of Darkness, and I indeed had to go through CalSec Central. Killing all the regular enemies there gives you the 100% for that level, but if you want to get into the vault in order to get the goodies, you have to go through a gauntlet of those damned sentry bots, either killing them all manually, or booking it to the vault and shutting them down (as well as the other bots of the act) with the vault terminal. My over-count for this was ten kills as well, which may correspond to the ten sentries guarding the vault.

So my runs through Jupiter Hell have been pretty rough going. I experimented with all different kinds of builds, but ended up dying over and over again, usually by 1.) getting stupid and recklessly rushing through, 2.) running out of health items near the end of shit, and 3.) being unlucky. But I have finally gotten my hands on my second major win, through my first successful shotgun run.
I wanted to go for Army of Darkness on this run, because I've had some big success with it before, and I managed to grab enough keys along the way to open all four of the Black Site Vaults and snag up what I needed from inside, and still have two keys left over. The thing which ultimately led to my victory, however, was careful health pack management and use of my multitools to keep myself in health and armor, as well as modding up the red armor that I got my hands on later on with power, bulk and accuracy mods.
The AV3 shotgun was gotten in CalSec Central after I cleared out the bad guys and booked it through instead of engaging the robo-sentries, taking the tack of disabling them. Sometimes when going through a run, especially on melee, I'll go through and tear apart the already disabled bots, and in fact, I had to destroy one disabled bot just to get to the transport to Europa at the end of the Callisto section. The AV2 Plasma Shotgun was gotten off an exalted pack in Io, after I had gotten acquainted with another plasma shotgun at the start of Io. The power and accuracy mods I put on the first boomstick in particular when combined with Army of Darkness meant that few enemies could stand up to me, especially once I got my hands on the CRI Shotgun Damage Amp in the Vaults. As I mentioned before, I had gotten my hands on enough keys along the way to open all the vaults and still have about two keys left over, which allowed me to mod up a lot of my gear.
I played very conservatively in Beyond (Hell) due to knowledge of how carelessness can get you killed even at the end. Near the end, I ended up picking up an AV3 Plasma Launcher, which allowed me to get rid of the rockets I was carrying for my other big launcher. I never did end up using the Plasma Launcher considering it was so late in the run. I didn't see any exits to The Arena like in other runs, and I'm wondering if it was taken out. I did have to go through Limbo, but only had to kill like five enemies before exploring everything and exiting out. Much like my last run through, I had to face the Summoner upon entering the portal on the third level of Beyond, and just like before, I kicked its ass.
I did not get the Medal of Prejudice or the other 100% kill achievements this time around, though I count it as a YAAM anyway because when I go through JH, I like to kill everything. While looking through the final mortem, I noticed that I was roughly ten kills over the maximum amount of bad guys there were, which has happened with some other people on these boards before. From what I've been able to learn, it's got something to do with how the CalSec level works (killing all the enemies on the first part grants you the 100%, then you have to contend with 10 sentry bots that you either have to kill or disable in order to get the goodies in the vault). Hopefully this gets fixed soon.

Post Mortem / Re: [0.8.8|U|Te|AoMr|YAVP] - pistol frenzy
« on: February 05, 2020, 08:28 »Well, I would've done that in my last run but only one ever dropped. And to be fair, if you don't go to the CRI Labs, you are probably going to be ammo-starved before the end of Beyond. There's not as much energy cells as you think there is. It looks like it's everywhere, but enemies drop small amounts and *every* plasma weapon just chunks cells. Shotgun is 4, Rifle is 3, Pistols are 2. I'd say the pistol is the worst one for damage vs cells spent, but I haven't actually done the math on it so I might be wrong. That would definitely explain why I was running low on plasma ammo near the end of my gunslinger victory run, and why I ended up having to dual wield the plasma gun and my 9mm together instead of two plasma guns in tandem.
But just the pure fact that even with pistols, your cell count is 50% of what it looks like is a pretty nasty hit. And with Gunslinger, you're now chonking two guns, so 4 per shot. Same as the shotgun.

Post Mortem / Re: [0.8.8|E|Ma|13|YAAM] Both Guns Blazing Through Hell and Beyond! (First Win)
« on: February 04, 2020, 03:55 »
Went through another playthrough, and it turns out that I was mistaken on the matter. As long as you're wielding a pistol, you can dual wield any pistol you pick up with another, be they 9mms, .44s or plasma guns. My initial reaction was borne out of the pistol I picked up not immediately linking up with the pair that I had. By switching from one pair to another, that little problem's fixed.

As a DoomRL veteran, I've played through Jupiter Hell, but up until now, I've not picked up a single win, most often through carelessness, but most of the time through bad luck and not getting the hell out. But when the Gunslinger update came along, my luck changed for the better.
So with the new Gunslinger update, I had a new trait to play around with. I started the build out as a standard Son of a Gun build before moving into Gunslinger. I found an ADV 9mm gun fairly early upon getting my first level of Gunslinger, but quickly learned to my annoyance that ADV 9mm pistols and regular 9mm pistols don't mix well together, which didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. But Gunslinger turned out to be a hell of a trait, especially once I got my hands on the second level of it. I quickly capitalized on this by modding up both of my pistols with power and accuracy and bulk mods, to the point where near the end of Europa, I had two PBA 9mm pistols delivering the pain to my foes, and a fairly large stockpile of 9mm ammo. Also helping tremendously were the new Health Orbs that greatly aided my survivability.
Io was where things started to get a bit tricky. It was the section where the plasma weapons started to appear, and I got my hands on two plasma pistols, leaving one of my PBA 9mms behind so that I could focus on dual-wielding the plasma guns. Unfortunately, I did not find very much plasma ammo beyond the first few stages of Io, and as a result, I found myself running low on plasma ammo by the time I got to the Vaults, so I ended up switching back to my remaining PBA 9mm, which I still had a good stockpile of ammo for, and found that I could use both that gun and my other plasma gun in tandem, which ended up saving my run. I was only able to open two of the Vaults using the Red Keycards, and when I ended up running out of plasma ammo, it was back to single-gunning it for a bit until I managed to get myself in plasma ammo again, though not enough to switch back to the dual plasma pistols, resulting in me using the PBA 9mm pistol and my plasma pistol for the rest of my run.
My gunslinging was eventually enough to take me to Beyond (a.k.a. Hell), where I had never been before. My main opposition were reavers, ravagers, fiends, and the occasional Hell Soldiers that gave me some refills on my ammo. I entered the Arena, and after killing everything (which was pretty tough going even with my health-ups and my levels of Ironman), another portal opened which I didn't really know about at the time. I knew from previous mortems on this forum that this was probably the end, but when I arrived at the Precipice of Despair, our favorite Marine's words pretty much echoed my thoughts at the time: "Where the fuck am I?"
The Precipice is basically a linear level where you face serious opposition as well as the Summoner, the main bad of this game. But thanks to Gunslinger, my build, and my choice of weaponry, I was able not only to clear out what the Summoner threw at me, but take him down after three to four rounds of summoning and retreating. Our marine decided to pull a Doom Slayer and stay in Hell to clean up, resulting in my first big win in Jupiter Hell and my first YAAM win.

« on: December 20, 2019, 23:53 »
The last time I used power armor was during my second big Centurial win run with Ammochain. It lasted pretty well until that big Baron fight which ended up costing me the suit and forcing me to hunt down more armor just to stay alive.
The nanoskin red armor served me plenty well, especially in Hell where I was being attacked by the VMR with their fire-damage, which red armor protects quite well against. The Nanoskin ended up protecting me to a lesser degree against zombies and others, with the Arachs being probably the only major enemy I sought to minimize contact with due to their fuck-you plasma autofire which did for me on my last big Berserker run. The reason I stuck a bulk mod on the armor was so that its protection would last longer, which I ended up complementing with levels of Tough as Nails. That combined with my berserk and my Vampyre kills meant that very few things could keep me down for very long. Not being able to take it off, however, ended up meaning I couldn't really use some better armors for modding, and I would have screwed myself out of a certain big anime-sized slab of raw iron if I had encountered the thing during my run.
That being said, the Ripper turned out to be a beast of a weapon when I assembled it, particularly once I maxed out Brute and bulk modded the thing.

« on: December 19, 2019, 02:59 »
I've done it. I've finally done it.
My very first 100% killrun on Angel of 100.
On a Berserker.
The last time I went on a berserker run, it got ended early by the usual suspects, a bunch of massed arachs that did for my ass with their massed fuck-you plasma autofire. But this time was different. This time, I went the full damn distance.
It started like frankly a lot of my runs. My primary weapons starting out were the shotgun and the combat knife, though some pistolwork did feature in the very beginning until I got my hands on the boomstick. I kept a good supply of armor and health packs for a good while in early game. Level 11 saw me assembling two main workhorse weapons. The first was my old reliable tac shotty, which I used on enemies unless I was berserk. The other weapon was a chainsword, which served me well for most of early game.
I also ended up getting my hands on a nano pack sometime in the 10s or 20s in regards to levels, which I ended up sticking on a piece of red armor. My second centurial win made me all too aware of the limitations of the nano pack in general, so I kept my other pieces around, and swapped to those pieces when my main armor was in danger of getting destroyed. Along the way, I ended up powermodding the armor for added protection, with an eye toward perhaps creating another Cybernano Armor, and when I dropped my second power mod in at Level 30, it asked me if I wanted to create a Nanofiber Skin Armor. Since I wasn't finding any onyx mods (and because I was a little dumb), I said okay. Nanofiber Skin Armor uses the armor rating of the original armor with an extra 25% to all resistances, it repairs itself out of combat like regular nano-modded armor, and it cannot be destroyed. This is quite a good thing, since like the Cybernano Armor, once you assemble it, you can't take it off. I would then proceed to capitalize on this by dropping in a Bulk Mod to extend the armor's protection, ensuring that I would be protected throughout the run.
This, along with the trait points I was dropping into Brute, Berserker and Vampyre, would prove to be the foundation of one of my best runs in a long time.
Level 47 was the level at which I got the chainsaw at long last. By this time, I had already devoted two points to Whizkid for purposes of modding, so I decided to devote mods to the chainsaw in order to assemble a real piece of nasty known as the Ripper, which I got off the wiki. The mods were really, really particular about how you threw them in -- it would not let me sink two power mods in in succession. But when I assembled the Ripper at Level 53, it became my endgame weapon, which I would cap off soon afterward by throwing a Bulk Mod in to raise its damage to 7D6, enough to tear apart even Hell's strongest monsters in only a few hits when berserked, in particular a Lava Elemental I encountered which went down with only three hits.
My strategy of keeping myself above 100% paid off in dividends again, as I was wading through hellish Mancubus, Revenant and Vile fire, going berserk, and tearing them apart as they stood and getting my health back, and many were the times when I would enter a level on an Invulnerability or in berserker mode for added pain. There were also plenty of times when the Mancubi did a dumbass thing and backed themselves right into the lava to try to play keep-away with me, only to burn and die; or made my job easier by killing other enemies. About the only enemies that I hated fighting were of course the arachs, which I either used my shotgun on or rushed down if they were single before tearing them apart; and once I was berserk, any monster in the vicinity could kiss its ass goodbye.
On two levels near the end, I ended up encountering Shamblers, but by that time, I had gotten so badass that they did not have a chance against me. I also ended up taking out an Agony Elemental a few levels before that, which went down in only a couple of hits. But probably the biggest moment of the run was five-shotting a fucking Cyberdemon that showed up at the start of Level 94. I had already gotten plenty of rocket-tanking practice from Mancubi and revenants, and getting caught in a Vile or barrel explosion was one of the biggest ways to trigger my Berserk, so needless to say, the big guy didn't have a prayer in Hell of taking me down.
One of my final levels had me hunting down and killing a mess of Lost Souls and Pain Elementals, who rightfully deserved the title of "Pain in the Ass" due to being tough to track down and often floating above lava meaning that I had to go in with my boots and bring the pain. But the lava wasn't much of a concern throughout endgame -- Nyarlaptotep's Boots, which I got in early game, were very protective, though not quite as protective as the Cerberus boots, and I was able to manage my health quite well.
Level 100 saw me FINALLY getting my hands on an Onyx Mod, which I had to laugh at -- I had already pretty much completed everything without assembling the Cybernano Armor again, and at this point, I did not need it. The level threw a bunch of arachs at me in addition to the Barons, Mancubi and Viles that had been a mainstay throughout most of my run through endgame, and with some careful management, I was able to end them all. My last kill which got me the YAAM was a Mancubus, which I handled in my usual fashion.
This is my third Centurial win, my very first YAAM Ao100 run, and my very first successful berserker run on Ao100. Feeling damn good right now.
My very first 100% killrun on Angel of 100.

--------------------------------------------------------------
So this second big Ammochain run was a proper meatgrinder. My early levels were spent with boomsticks and the chaingun, with the tac shotty being assembled early. I also was fortunate enough to find myself a Nano Pack and put it on my red armor, followed by a power mod that I put on it as well for some nice power armor which lasted me the entire first half of the run. I grabbed the Necro Armor later, but kept it on reserve in case something unfortunate happened to the power armor. The plasma gun, like most plasma guns on Ao100 runs, was gotten off a former commando, and became my main weapon once I hit Ammochain once again.
After a slip-up in what mods to use on my first pair of boots upon hitting Whizkid 2, I assembled my first Cerberus Boots on level 49, which meant I didn't have to worry about standing in the bad again. And unlike the Enviroboots, which I came across later in the run but didn't grab because I didn't need them, you can actually mod the puppies, which I did with an Agility mod that I found later. Unfortunately, I lost my power armor at around Level 51 to a nasty fight with lots of Barons in which the Power Armor's repair suite just wasn't enough to keep it from getting scrapped. So I used the Necro Armor, only to find out after that armor took a beating that it repairs itself by fucking draining my health. Suddenly that one death I suffered while wearing it on an earlier run made all too much sense. Fuck that noise.
So I had to do some armor collecting once again just to keep myself in armor and try to assemble something better than my power armor. Unfortunately, power-modding my other armor in preparation for perhaps going for another Cybernano Armor was often an open invitation for the local Barons and Mancubi to fucking tear it apart with their asshole acid balls and rockets. I came across the Laser Rifle again later, and once more, it became my main weapon for tearing demons apart. My other weapon, the plasma gun, got agility mod after agility mod put on it until I got the assault rifle assembly, on a level that also saw me getting my hands on a Railgun. Unfortunately, the assault rifle assembly put the weapon at 2d6 damage per shot with Son of a Bitch 5, so I was blowing enemies back a huge ways. Worse, it consumed two ammo per general volley, so the weapon was eventually left behind in favor of my laser rifle. The Railgun wasn't much better, being a semiautomatic weapon that consumed 5 plasma cells a shot, so that got left behind immediately. My laser rifle became my endgame weapon, as I put two power mods, two agility mods, and a tech mod on it (something I didn't think was exactly possible). The other major weapon that saw use during the run was the Trigun on Level 70, which I decided to take with me because I wanted to use the Angel Arm at least once during the run.
Level 75, the nuke level, is the reason why this isn't a YAAM run. I was down to one monster by the time the timer reached 50 seconds, and I wasn't going to waste the rest of my time in the level hunting the fucker down, especially with no Invulnerability to be had, so I bugged out. Level 81 had an invulnerability and yet more VMR to deal with, so I decided this was the perfect opportunity to test out the Angel Arm. I've never seen a nuke or a nuke-like weapon in action outside Dis, so running around in a completely cleared level, walls and all, was an experience I wasn't really used to.
I finally got some working armor again towards the end, equipping a Red Armor with Power, Bulk and Agility mods. Unfortunately, I was also running out of cell ammo, getting down to just one stack near the end, so I grabbed a chaingun off a captain and started collecting 10mm ammo. Fortunately, the last few levels provided me with enough cell ammo to get myself in ammo again, so I was back in action once again. The Minigun in my inventory was gotten at the very end of the run on the final level, so I decided to use it for a bit before switching back to the laser rifle to finish off the rest of the monsters, including the Vile at the very end, before exiting out and finishing the run.
It turns out that the monster I left behind when I bugged out to avoid getting my ass nuked was the only one I didn't kill in the entire run, placing me just one kill shy of a hundred-percent kill rate. On the other hand, I did manage to make it to Arch-Vile rank, so I count it as a win regardless.

On any other weapon, a burst cannon assembly would be highly inaccurate and generally Not Worth It, but the laser rifle was accurate enough that I didn't mind the -2 penalty because it was already tearing through shit anyway. Besides, with my first major mod on the thing being a power mod, turning it into a burst cannon seemed only fitting. If I had gone for an agility mod on the thing instead of a power mod, I could have turned it into either an assault rifle or a hyperblaster.

The only arach cave I encountered in my other big run was level 90, and at that point, I was pretty damn overpowered, what with my cybernano armor, my assmelting laser cannon, and my Ammochain build with maxed out Son of a Bitch, which meant that I tore right through the little bastards, and the only reason I had to nuke the place was because I couldn't find that last spider. Whizkid and Son of a Bitch really are godsends when it comes to damage potential, especially when it comes to burst builds.
But yeah. Massed arachs are not fun at all when you're not berserk or otherwise protected -- four or more of them blasting on you at once are a damn good recipe for having your day fucked to hell.

208 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
183 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
And 10 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.
14 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
3 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
4 killed the bitch and survived.
7 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.

So after my first centurial victory, I thought I'd try again, this time with a berserker. The Butcher's Cleaver was gotten quite early, and became my primary weapon throughout the run once Vampyre was unlocked. The health I was getting back from Vampyre plus my habit of healing up using spheres and globes meant that I could wade through mancubus and revenant fire most of the time without worrying about going under, and if I got low mid-fight after killing everything, I'd use one of my stimpacks or medkits. That being said, the Mancubi and Revenants became annoying for an entirely different reason -- that reason being that their shit kept destroying items I needed. I relied on the phaseshift set to get me over the bad until I got my hands on the Enviroboots again, which meant it was lavadancing time again.
I didn't find a single onyx or nano mod in the entirety of the run, meaning that my nanofiber armor was the only source of indestructible protection I had aside from the Enviroboots. I did get my hands on a set of gothic armor, but that shit slows you down big-time, so I didn't use it. I also made the choice of using the power-mod I found later on on the chainsaw I found a while after the Cleaver, because I had the Ripper on my mind. It would have been more useful on either the Nanofiber armor or the Red or Gothic armors I was carrying. My build was a straight up berserker, though I was running out of traits by the end of the run and didn't want to put any points into Ironman, since it increases the amount of damage you have to take to trigger Berserk.
My luck ran out when I entered that spider cave on Level 79, just 21 levels before the end. Arachs are the bane of a berserker's existence, especially in large numbers -- they do just enough damage with their plasmaguns to fuck you up bad with massed fire, but not enough with individual blasts to trigger berserk. It didn't help that there were nightmare arachs as well, for even more damage. I had few large medkits left, and I used them all just trying to get close to the fuckers. Berserk went off exactly once in that level, which I used to kill two of the damned spiders before the others did for me, doing too much damage for my small health packs to keep up with.
Next time, I'm bringing a fucking backup -- perhaps a good elephant gun or a good pistol assembly -- for dealing with assholes like these.

« on: August 03, 2017, 03:40 »Nice! :D I never get Ammochain because of accuracy issues, but a Laser Rifle in an Ammochain build sounds like a pretty epic combination... and a Burst Laser Rifle sounds extra epic! :D Must've been fun. :)
It was. I was killing Revenants, regular Cacos and other lesser foes in one burst, Barons, Arachs and Hellknights in two bursts (one burst for the latter two once I maxed out Son of a Bitch), and Viles, Mancubi and Bruisers in two to three bursts. The only enemies that took more than that to kill were the Nightmare monsters, including two Nightmare Viles. I only encountered one Shambler, which in pairs is usually a run-killer in Deimos Lab and usually brings me down to few if any health packs in those cases where I make it out alive, but with my build and my weapon, this guy went down with near-contemptible ease -- two or three bursts was all it took, and I didn't even give him time to regen or teleport away.
My only slip-up was not assembling a pair of Cerberus boots so that I could do the lava dance again. Running around in the Enviroboots on the last major Ao100 run was damned fun, even if the run in question did end badly.
