I like this nickname for AoMC :3
The purpose of this run was to see how big of a difference AoMC would make in a run like this. I wasn't quite seeing yet the full extent of the advantages given by AoMC until this run. You can melt everything in record time, you can skip eagle eye and agility mods altogether for weapons, and I shamelessly did special levels like hell's armory for extra weapons/mods. You're not exempt of being careful as you tear through levels of course, but Intuition in AoMC is probably the most powerful combination in DoomRL.
Regardless, you learn interesting uses for weapons like the rocket launcher: you start making holes in walls all over the place to save time finding enemies and/or the stairs. =)
Equipping the cybernetic armor was intentional, even though it caught me off guard that you couldn't mod it unless you were a Technician. Removing the need to worry about armor saves me some inventory space as well as time equipping/removing armor.

That's one (valid) way of thinking about it, but the developers seem to care about that kinda thing. Otherwise saving wouldn't be blocked in N!, for example.

Anytime I see phobos lab on nightmare it's one giant NOPE. I think the demons should flood out through some kind of trigger so you at least get a chance to lure them into acid.

It's alright, I already had my revenge. Here's a screenshot of doomguy with his movespeed thanks to modded phaseshift and antigravity boots. With running engaged his movespeed was 0.11-0.12 seconds/move xD

I was unsatisfied with the previous attempt, so after dying early 2-3 times I got into the groove again and made it all the way this time. It was getting late though so I took some breaks in between. xD
I'm pretty happy with this run overall though. I even used nukes correctly this time! I got a firestorm pack in the level 90's, but I was hoping I would run into a nano pack instead to finish the nanomanufacture ammo like I did last attempt and as you can tell I was just running to the stairs by then because I simply didn't have enough firepower to deal with the crazy mobs of monsters. I think getting TH2 bugged my nuclear assault rifle, since for some reason it would shoot *ten* bullets at a time instead of five. This actually made my damage output worse in most cases because the sheer knockback of the hits would knock enemies away whenever I shot at an angle, and it was very inefficient for taking out weaker enemies.
I didn't have the same godly luck as last time, but a plasma rifle and any decent shotgun is just about the minimum for me to fight up to level 50 or so. It helps that on nightmare enemies respawn, so I can isolate former commandos or arachnotrons and farm them for cells. I would have run out of ammo several times over otherwise. I found the Berserker's armor, but unfortunately the Dragonslayer was nowhere to be found so I couldn't even try to grab it. Had I obtained it early enough I could have probably leveled up brute instead.
Naturally, the game taunts you about the Berserker's armor and Dragonslayer. I just hope N! Ao100 is not a requirement for whatever Ao100 has in store for you if you grab both of those mysterious pieces :P

Have you ever tried rocket-jumping with heavy gear ? I just checked again (in case it changed in 0.9.9.7), and with T-modded grappling boots & onyx armor (plus Badass2, poor knockback :p), my rocket jumps don't move me at all.
I doubt there's any ignored knockback reduction when rocket jumping, where did you get such information ?
I think knockback effectiveness is doubled when you rocket jump or something to that effect.
A little bit late as a reply, but you can totally rocket jump for the purposes of Gatekeeper badges... provided you have Fireangel.
Thanks! I guess I'll try that sometime. Does this mean you can rocket jump repeatedly and right through in between the bruiser brothers? x)

« on: April 06, 2013, 11:55 »Nope, it is really easy, did it just now with all but lava pits special levels, 87% killrate and JC. Max Carnage makes everything much easier. I guess I should look at few diamonds that I haven't yet. Lighfoot? Inquisitor, Eagerness, Masochist?
Hmm, I guess there's something I'm not taking advantage of yet, I still die a whole lot :P AoB were my favorite type of runs initially, so I'm still getting used to the idea of avoiding damage altogether. What about Everyman diamond using max carnage? :P

It never crossed my mind that it would insta detonate. I could have just nuked the level at the beginning too, since I had an invulnerability.. aaargh

To be honest, without AoMC the only major difference is Hell's Armory/Deimos Lab, since you're lacking firepower you have to be more careful against the commandos, specially if you dont have a plasma rifle yet. I could probably afford not to go straight to intuition without AoMC, which means more SoB to deal with the shamblers. AoMC just lets me play ballsier since knockback and damage is so consistent.
Some dual angels certainly make some badges trivial, but IMO this one is just tradeoffs.

Is it that important to get SoB on AoMC, with the guaranteed max damage? I'd go for WK earlier, or maybe HR.
Agh, of course.. the badge could be cheesed too easily otherwise. I was invulnerable too, I could have just melted the arch-viles before they had a chance to summon too many monsters.
SoB is good for saving ammo and increasing knockback from your shotguns, which can effectively replace hellrunner outside of the start of levels where you could be completely surrounded. SoB early will kill commandos with 1 chaingun volley for example. I did go overboard with SoB though xd maybe I could do 1x SoB next time and go WK earlier if I find plenty of power mods.

I'm not sure if AoMC locks out the badge or not, or whether nuking the mortuary while invulnerable did it. I *could* have done mortuary through conventional means, my plasma rifle was a death ray and I had more than enough skulls, but I wanted to play it safe since I had a full inventory anyway.
After I got rid of the shamblers in Deimos Lab, the cache showed both an onyx AND nano pack. I kept it until I could get Whizkid and the power mods needed, and I managed to complete a cybernano red armor. The cybernano armor was a godsend, it saved me several times.
By the time I got SoBx5 and 2 power mods on my plasma rifle, I was actually having trouble with it because it would knock enemies out of the way and not to full damage, and it was actually *melting walls*. Thankfully I didn't need to kill much else by then and the SM got turned into goo before she could attack.
On a more general note, I hope it's not a problem that I'm spamming the forum with mortems.. lol

There's definite balance issues with this. The easiest counter-example are any type of late-game caves. These are usually ridden by lava pools, and they will sometimes block even the stairs and not just items. This would trivialize the decision of running through a lava pool in hopes of finding items, powerups or just the stairs to the next level.

Don't you think a nanomachic plasma rifle would have been better than just a nano ? With no reload needed, it lets you chainfire like mad, it could even have been enough for the N! demons cave (well, depends on their number & placement, ofc)
You might have needed the early P2, ofc, but I think it doesn't makes so much difference, does it ?
I was hoping I could get that, but I had no inventory space to keep the bulk mods and build that assembly once I got whizkid2. We should be able to kick one extra item down the stairs.. xD
I can try finesse 2 over early SoB next time, but SoB affects my shotgun as well, which makes it much greater at crowd control and saving shells. Maybe if I can get WK1 by the time I do Hell's armory, but that might be hard.

I got a nano pack in Hell's Armory, which is an amazing alternative to finding a nuclear plasma rifle. I solved the ammo problem for doing this place by isolating a former commando using my shotguns and getting enough spare plasma rifles to do the rest of hell's arena without worrying about ammo. I ran into a ton of mods, and I just couldn't use them all. The level right before Dis there was yet another nano pack, and technically I could use it on my boots but it'd just be there for show.. lol
I was really close to dying in the nightmare demon cave, I just didn't have enough firepower to take all of them out. Coincidentally, I had decided to keep a phase device from the level before since I had to burn a medkit thanks to a stray mancubus rocket. I used it and it transported me to the very opposite side of the map.. lucky! The only other option I had there was to try running through lava.
Again, upgrade path depended on what I found along the way for modding my weapons. Not being tied to wanting a master trait makes things much more flexible. I didn't have the best plasma rifle ever but I melted SM either way, no complaints there x)
