As Angles of death points out, corner-shooting is an easy way to kill the Shambler.
I've done it with a chaingun and with pistols, too.
You just have to wait for him to show, hide yourself behind the corner and shoot, shoot, shoot :)

I've just experienced the same error. I'm using the 0.9.9.3 on Windows 7.
I entered a room with two barrels and a lever just below them. I pushed the
lever and it blew the barrels and produced an error message which was the
same with the one above.
Hope this will help reproducing the bug.
