I've been trying Ao100 UV for some time, trying different builds. At last I managed to get to a master trait with an Army of the Dead build.

I had to leave the game be at one point, and it looked pretty bleak - the only ammo (besides two rocket boxes I couldn't shoot) was inside my fully loaded tactical and double shotguns. When I loaded the game, the first thing I saw was a sergeant. Next thing I see (and I would never believe I'd be so happy because of it) was an arch-vile! I didn't manage to farm the sergeant much, but in the end I left the level with 2 stacks of shells, newly crafted tactical boots, 150 health, a plasma rifle as a backup weapon (with two batteries!), and invulnerable.

Next level gave me the Jackhammer, though I kept it as a backup only, since I still had to save shells. Then a few levels further I entered three consecutive complexes full of formers, and two of them had a megasphere in them. Since shells were dropping everywhere, I could finally let loose with the jackhammer. I wasn't radar shooting anymore, I was radar killing. I could literally shoot anywhere in the dark and the roar of the Jackhammer was always answered by a couple of dying voices.

Then mancubi happened. A couple of levels with bad starting position, some nasty arch-viles and so on, and I finally "rode a mancubi rocket" to oblivion on level 25.

I think I'll give Ao100 a rest for now. At least I got the bronze badge and hell knight rank out of it.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.6G Win] Vaults have wrong tiles

Here's what a vault in hell looks like (it was one of those remotely opened ones) - the pregenerated blood is on standard hell tiles, while the rest of the vault uses the hexagonal texture.

Phew... another lucky AoMr. I didn't get any unique pistols (only a blaster just before Mastermind) but RNG was generous with nano mods.

I went with a masterless marine build, which seems to me much better than bullet dance. I got the first nano pack in the armory and I had to decide if I want gravity boots (I never assembled them before, but I got the recipe in schematics) and power armour. In the end I decided that it's better to unlock an advanced schematic. In the end it turned out that I didn't need to think about it that much since the next level got me another nano mod and so I could have both. Awesome. From then on the game was very easy.

I finally got the mods to make an energy pistol (to go with the storm bolter I made in the Armory) on level 18 but there were no cells on the next few levels. I can't believe I was glad to enter two consecutive arachnotron caves later =)

I didn't enter the mortuary since I was going for YAAM and was running low on ammo at that point. Normally I'd try it and phased out if it got too rough, but I didn't want to risk it.

There was an invuln globe before the mastermind, so I didn't even have to use the lava element. JC was easy. I thought I might be in trouble when he surrounded himself with barons, but he then decided to teleport right next to me, which wasn't the smartest decision =)


In any case, it seems I'll be able to get my missing badges relatively easily. It took me ages to get them in the first place, but it seems once you know how to do it, it's not so hard to make it happen again.

Well, it's been a hell of a ride. I guess I'll do a pistol build Ao100 next - need 17 more hell knight pistol kills to advance from Mancubus.

After starting over with a pretty good run, I decided to go for AoB Gold, but kept getting my ass kicked. Then at last I got lucky and got Necroarmor in an early vault, which made the game a walk in the park. It works really well with Vampyre. So what happened? I forgot to watch my health and died stupidly early in hell with inventory full of medpacks and phases and 100% kills up to that point (not counting the revenant that killed me).

So I decided to try a pacifist run for a change of pace, since I always liked that challenge. I got a lucky run and scored Gold badge on my first try, plus some nice medals.

So I gave up the search for my flash and finally decided to give DoomRL another go. I decided to give a try to Blademaster, something I haven't done for some time, and it worked out. God quite a few badges out of it =)

Discussion / Goddamn DoomRL addiction

I've left the flash where I kept DoomRL somewhere - either my friends have it or it's lost forever. Unfortunately, that means I can't play DoomRL. I could obviously make a new installation, but I'm sure if I did, I'd get all the specials I need for Armorer diamond in three runs, probably pull off Gatekeeper diamond and maybe some other badges I'm trying to get right now...

I haven't smoked a single cigarette since the party where I left the flash and I don't care, but the DoomRL withdrawal is killing me...

Discussion / Any tips on AoB UV?

I've been trying out AoB on UV but it's extremely hard. Best I got was level 5, and only if I got really lucky berseker packs.

I wonder if you could give me some pointers to what I can improve. Let's see:

I giftdrop like crazy, to the extent that when I use my last medkit, my first thought is usually "oh no! I can't giftdrop" instead "oh no, I'm going to die now"
I try to throw knives as much as I can, though there's probably plenty of room for improvement.
I'm playing marine to make the most of any berserk packs I find, theoretically going for Vampyre, though I'm not even getting.
I go with the standard Bru -> Bru -> Ber  -> Bru ... I've yet to get further in the build though. Maybe I should take bru 3 before berseker? (I notice that I don't get zerked all that often with all the waiting for the right opportunities to strike.
I conserve my medkits as best I can, most of the time healing only when I drop to ~10% AND I still usually die after depleting them all.
I skip hell's arena, since I never managed to pass it when I tried, plus I want a chainsaw without dealing with the Arena Master. Maybe I should clean at least the first arena round for XP?
My blue armour tends to get destroyed son despite my efforts to conserve it.

Edit: Oh! And I try to take advantage of barrels as best I can and often succeed in driving enemies to suicide, at times preceded by a long session of sokoban (when I have a tracking map). I'm also aware that I can blow up the barrels myself by throwing knives and that they strangely don't get destroyed.

So... any tips?

I finaly got my hands on House of Leaves. For those who don't know the book, it is an experimental novel... actually, words fail me. It's a book about a book about a film about a house that is a labyrinth, which is bigger on the inside that on the outside. And the page layout is crazy:





While I'm usually wary of such experiments, since na outrageous form often means less substance of the content, all the reviews of this book I could find were overwhelmingly positive.
Besides, the strange formatting isn't just for its own sake, as is often the case. It serves to create an atmosphere which corresponds to the events in the book: when the characters explore the labyrinth, the pages themselves start being twisted and maze-like. When they are chased by something, suddenly there are only a few words on each page, which makes you turn the pages rapidly etc.

It was never published in the Czech Republic (and frankly, I don't think a translation would do for me) and I couldn't find it in any library or bookstore anywhere. Luckily I googled up a Czech blog where the one writing it offered to sell a copy of the book (since he accidentally got two copies) and managed to get my family to get the book for me for my name-day I had this Sunday. Otherwise the book would be quite expensive to get.

In any case I just started to read and it's really well written, though I can't say if the book is good until I've finished it. It has already succeeded very well in something which many books try - it is told through several layers: the main (?) character got his hands on a manuscript written by a strange blind old man called Zampanó who recently died. Thus after some introduction there is a transprition of said manuscript with notes by the main character, while the manuscript itself describes a strange fictional (it might be fictional in-universe as well) film called "The Navidson Record", which is about the weird house and the Navidson family that lives there and explores it. It sounds complicated, but it's in fact quite easy to follow and understand (so far) thanks to different layers being set in different fonts. And the best thing is that it creates some vague fear not only for the safety of the main character, but for mine as a reader.

Well.. so that's it. I'll let you know if the book is as good as it seems when I finish it.

My current plan is to play a lot of UV games to harvest schematics, though all I seem to be getting lately is the goddamn cybernetic armour. Since I was getting bored by chainfire builds, I decided to go for sharpshooter, but it is really tough to reach it. I'm not good enough to take advantage of Gun Kata and Bullet Dance seems kinda weak, so in the end I took my own advice and went as a masterless soldier.

I gathered mods planning to make my first storm bolter and an energy pistol so I could use two kinds of ammo. I found the last mods needed (and incidentally WK2) in the armoury but I also found something much better: Grammaton Cleric Beretta! I tell you, when I saw it, I almost cried from joy. If I could kiss the RNG, I would. I made a strom bolter (I'm reading some more WH40K novels so it seemed a good choice) and threw the unfinished energy pistol away. Oh, an I encountered the storm bolter loading bug, which gave me an ammo chain with more than 65 000 bullets in it. I considered taking it but in the end I threw it into lava. Damn me and my honesty.

In any case, from then on the game was pretty easy. With EE I could use the full auto GCB with excellent accuracy but it was hardly ever necessary.

The Vaults gave me Jackhammer (I'm always glad to see that magnificent weapon, even if I cannot use it) and a ballistic shield, which I saved for the mastermind. Then came the mortuary. I usually don't try to clean it, unless playing a vampyre build. Most of the time I just homing phase to get a supercharge and some loot. This was the first time I entered it on AoMr and first time on UV. Needless to say, I probably shouldn't have done it. I skipped City of skulls, so I didn't have anything to destroy the corpses and my pistols were in no shape to gib enemies. I had a pretty reliable knockback, but I soon found that I'll keep killing the same monsters until I run out of ammo, or get hopelessly surrounded. I homing-phased and got the fuck out of there. Good thing was that since I couldn't get YAAM, I felt free to skip whatever levels I wanted (I didn't realize that I had pretty much guaranteed Marksman Platinum... well, I can do this again anytime, probably) and very soon I found myself in Dis.

I could have easily cleared the lava pits and get a full win, but I wanted to fight the spider. Besides, nuking her wouldn't give me my second Grammaton Cleric Cross. So... I put on my ballistic shield and killed her without any trouble... reminded me of the times when her melee attacks sucked =)


BTW this is a great pistol build:

You should get WK just in time for Hell's Armory (or as I like to call it - the-level-where-you-have-to-rearange-your-inventory-and-decide-what-to-take-with-you). Other than that it is all about maximizing your firepower. With ABP modded red armour and tactical boots you get enough protection not to die when you do something stupid (in this game I pushed a lava barrel into lava and caught an acid ball into face as soon as I landed in the resulting lava pool...) and enough speed to be able to kill pretty much anything before it can react.

This is a very minor thing with negligible impact on gameplay, but what the hell:

If you have two pistols equipped, kill a monster and pick dualgunner, the prepared pistol will go off immediately after.

So I guess I've officially moved to UV as my standard difficulty. My plan right now is to play a lot of standard games just to find the remaining assemblies. This run didn't give me schematics, but at least I got my first UV full win and nearly gatekeeper diamond.

I've tried to get into rapid fire builds again. At first I tried ammochain, but it seemed it didn't give me enough DPS and I got my ass kicked. Cateye is higly praised on the forums, but for me Int 2 is enough, I don't need to know what it is, as long as I can blast it. I experimented with entrenchment, but that didn't work out for me either, so I went for a masterless marine build instead and wow... it was awesome.

I skipped chined court, since I'm still a little afraid of the arena master, and then found invuln. next to the doors to the wall. That gave me some hope for cleaing the anomaly without any damage, so I ran for the stairs and was able to clean the first anomaly room easily. Unfortunately, sicne I skipped the wall, I didn't have the missile launcher, which is my standard way of dealing with the bruisers. I did my best to damage them outside the LOS and they pushed me back to the starting room. With no way to kill them fast enough, I used a phase which gave me a few more potshots at them. As I was retreating back, I had to use a large medkit at full helath just to be able to run anway and with some luck managed to kill them without taking a scratch. I knew I was just one lucky invuln away from my first diamond badge, but RNG had other ideas, so I unfortunately took some damage from Cybie. Thinking back, maybe I should have gone for dodgemaster right after anomaly, but I didn't want to screw my build and get killed before even reaching the big C.

Armory gave me an F mod, and I soon had enough cells to say goodbye to my gatling gun and tons of 10mm ammo. Ammo stopped being a concern once I cleaned the spider lair and got my nuclear plasma.

In any case, I realized I can get veteran platinum, so I went to the lava pits and played it extremely safe - I killed all the nearby monsters and then unloaded the full nuclear clip of my rifle aiming at each single tile in the oposite direction before venturing forward. And in on the little island where you get higher chances of better armour I found the whole phaseshift set! This is the first time I had that and it certainly made the game a lot easier, though I used ABP modded red armour most of the time.

Then I finally stood against the Ultra Violent version of JC himself... who proved to be no problem at all, getting a few facefuls of plasma and BFG when he tried to call his friends. He fell much quicker than I expected.

So I thought to myself it is high time I grabbed my first UV win, with secondary objectives being Veteran Gold Badge (for 100% kills) and Veteran Platinum Badge (full win). So far I only managed to win UV on AoMc (obviously) and AoSh, so I decided to go with a shotgun build. It can't be much harder than the challenge, right?

Anyway, I put my first two points into reloader when I suddenly found the Grammaton Cleric Beretta. I obviously withdrew my plans and started investing points into SoG. It turns out that reloader is pretty handy with GCB so I wasted nothing. I didn't get dualgunner, since what's one more bullet when I can shoot a burst of eight when I get TH? Bullet dance wouldn't have helped me much either, so I went masterless for maximum damage - SoG, SoB, EE and TH and it was worth it.

I skipped the chained court (and so later vaults as well), since I wasn't sure I could pull it off at that time, but I did clean out the wall (with some serious scratches) for the first time on UV - I was lucky that the viles decided to peek into the hole first. Spider lair was a walk in the park, since I could kill the spiders with two semi-automatic bursts before they could move after teleporting/comming into my view. With a red fireproof armour cybie didn't cause me any trouble at all.

Things started to be a little dangerous in hell, but nothing I couldn't handle by now. The most dangerous moment was when some tougher enemies knocked me into lava in their midst and while I could likely kill them before they could attack again, but each shot cost me 10% hp,  since I only had tactical boots. I realized that when I had last 10%, ate a large medpack and got faceful of acid or what was is, which brought me back down to 56%. Luckily, a phase got me to safety after that.

I avoided the mortuary, even though I think I could have beaten it. I didn't want to risk it. With only one protective suit, I decided to skip the lava pits as well, which cost me the full win, but I had no problem to get my YAAM.

Oh, and I came to Dis carrying 2 power modded blue armours just in case Malek's armour didn't do the trick... and ended up killing the mastermind before she got a single shot in. Another Brain for me, and the rare Grammaton Cleric Cross, which I believe really deserved for using GCB almost exclusively from level 2 onwards =)

The only way this run could have been more fun would be if I played scout and could have taken gun kata... maybe some other time...

I had the suspicion that this happens sometimes for some time - I've noticed blood "moving" in hell's arena outside my sight and then found a cacodemon there, though I wasn't ever sure that there wasn't a demon that ran away as well.

Today I was playing a AoMr game and I saw that a tile got blooded in a room where I knew was only a pain elemental (+ maybe some lost souls). I went there, killed the elemental, and it was in fact the last enemy in the level.

Would it be possible to hide all the instances of the baidu crawler from the who's online page? I like to watch the page when there are no new posts if I'm bored at work (and I leave it immediately if I see anyone else viewing it, but that's another matter =). Anyway, all the instances of baidu are cluttering the list up. (google is thankfully much more polite). They are all grouped up in the Users active list /Baidu (25)/, so can something similar be done for the linked page?

Edit: Ech, nevermind. Found the "show only members" thing. That solves it.
