Requests For Features / Re: changes to challanges
« on: August 27, 2010, 01:50 »
Definitely agree with a lot of your points.  As to specific responses

The Wall -
I've cleared the wall on N! a time or two, but under the influence of invulnerability and berserk.  If you manage to gib some enemies, you're off to a good start, several people have suggested spacing out the barons and knights on UV.  All in all, still quite difficult and may not be worth the rewards, but same can generally be said for Hell's Arena.  If you can think of an extra reward for N! though, I'm all ears.

Hellgate - I see what you mean.   To be honest though, any N! run I can think of, and even a lot of UV runs where I can't break walls have just been a mad dash through the entire level.  I'm all for replacing the large health globes on AoP with large medkits, for example, or at the very least small ones.  Same can be said for The Hall of Carnage, replacing the supercharge globes there with large medkits.  Generally, small medkits in place of large health/berserk and large medkit where supercharge globes are in special levels.  Back to HellGate, replacing those large healing globes with one supercharge is also an idea.  How were you thinking of tailoring it?

Clearing Special levels on N! -

I'm pretty sure the bugs with level clearing are also linked to the problem with getting the Conqueror medal.  Oh well.

N! difficulty -

Yeah, the difficulty of N! has gotten SEVERELY increased.  The speed increase is definitely a cool (if not painfully frustrating) idea, but let's face it, N! was already a nightmare before.  Balancing it out with some benefits, if even with increased exo/unique generation or special level rewards (since most special level rewards are stupidly obselete on N! anyway) would even things out.  I've had a few AoRA and AoSg runs blessed with an early assault shotgun and it didn't seem to make much of a difference in how long I lived.

Mortuary -

Does it seem silly to anybody else that an assault shotgun is offered in the mortuary?  It's a pretty wimpy weapon so late, not ground breaking by any standards.  A plasma shotgun would be better imo, and maybe an assault shotty could be an award in N! for hell's arena or placed elsewhere.  Maybe have it replace the BFG in AoSg runs in special levels?  I'd clear Halls of Carnage or City of Skulls for an assault shotgun on AoSg.

I'm not sure if this has severely annoyed anyone else, but it's been a constant bother to me in every incarnation of DoomRL and I'd like to open it up for discussion.

Why, oh why, can't we use the look command to examine things that a computer map has displayed?  I understand that in most cases it is moot, everything can be easily identified by knowing the color and symbol of the object.  However, what about exotics and uniques?  They are all the same color and have to be examined up close.  Large healing globes can't be distinguished from berserk packs.

The real kicker, however, is that when under the effects of an envirosuit, berserk, or invulnerability not even the color is available to identify objects.  I can understand that it's a very pretty graphical effect and it's true that it adds an extra element to gameplay.  I still think it makes little to no sense that you can't distinguish many objects from their similarly shaped counterparts when "under the influence."

With the graphical version of DoomRL somewhere on the horizon, all the objects will have individual tiles and be distinguishable with a computer map anyway.  That gameplay advantage alone is a good enough reason to play the tile version over the ASCII version.

Well, what does everybody think?

The real problem on N! is getting past those Arachno caves which are sure to take some medkits and phase kits to get out if you're lucky, and kill you if you're not.  A bad arachno cave generation (surrounded by Arachnos with the stairs in some cave off-shoot that you have to wade through lava to get to) is pretty much an insta-death.

Ever since berserker became damage based, I've been trained to take my first four traits as Bru -> Bru-> Ber -> Bru.  As for going for MVa first, I'm not sure, but I'll certainly vouch for that third level of Brute to be taken eventually.

Also of note, three levels of brute gives you enough to-hit to comfortably hit enemies while running.

Pacing impatiently back and forth Dr. Shelder makes an idle gesture, his attention obviously focused elsewhere.

Well, what are you waiting for Commodore?  Sign the damned thing so we have a way off this rock.  I hope the medical bay is in better condition than it's hull.

Vince's hands working quickly, he draws out what appears to be the claw of a large feral beast from his shrit.  His hand grips it tightly, but his cold steely eyes stare straight at the retired commodore, Doran.

Congratulations.  This is one of the badges I'm excited to try to earn... once the bugfix comes out =P  Laser Rifle is definitely awesome with MAc, but terrible on AoMC.

Discussion / Re: MAc/General Balancing (pt 2)

I find it hard enough to get the agility mods to make AmmoChain viable in N! anyway.  People talk about getting the Barons to destroy the side vaults, and I'm finding it a lot harder in practice.  The most reliable way to get them is having explosives, which requires clearing Hell's Arena first.  Without agi mods, it isn't more powerful than the other ones.

Switching Cateye and Int2 is an interesting idea.  Personally, I'd love to see it =D.

Based on Hell's Arena stop to enemy ressurection on N! after completion, I'd say the code is supposed to stop monster regeneration on N! when a special level is completed.

Sorry to hear about your AoMr loss Kg...  first time at HellGate on UV is a pain, especially if you always run *backwards* to the first room like I did.  (If you run forwards, you don't have to run through the Arch-Viles.)

Yeah, I never really thought about it, but homing phase wouldn't work on Hellsgate since there are no stairs.  good to know, although I either use a phase or blow open the walls if I have the means.

Special levels do not skip a dungeon level but if you're playing AoPc you'll often take the first stairway you get.  This is because most special levels allow you to leave quickly after you've entered them (with a few exceptions i.e. Hell's Arena or Chained Court) or give you some sort of health or defensive benefit after entering (i.e. Chained Court or Halls of Carnage)

How did you manage to start with an armor that cost 600k credits?

Bug Reports / Re: [v 0991](Win)Invincible barrels
« on: August 19, 2010, 08:50 »
Haven't gotten a chance to test with other barrel types yet, but I have noticed that thisn only *seems* to happen near the beginning of levels where not too much has been explored or killed.  After I've displaced a corpse with a barrel, I've shot at the barrel repeatedly without a dent.  After going around and clearing the rest of the level, I returned and blew it up.

Edit:  Yes, it works with other barrels as well.

This sort of thing has been proposed before and your version of it is a little extreme, IMO... I honestly don't think it would be possible to fight through most of Phobos Hell with no traits and not a single inventory slot...

I didn't realize it has been proposed before, although many ideas here probably have.

This of course could be balanced a bit, such as maybe losing a level every two floors, or always being able to carry at least one or two inventory slots.  I figure it would be a challenge to take down cybie with only say, two slots of items and your prepared and carried weps. I think Hell would be perfectly doable without any traits, you'd basically already have BFG etc. and you'd only be going the last 5 levels of phobos hell without them, which are just a survival run anyway.  If this is too extreme, a level loss every couple stairs akin to Angel of Pacifism would work.

75
On Angel of Purity, you're unable to swallow those delicious supercharge globes.  That came out a little wrong...

Anyway!  Yes, AoP is frustrating for many reasons, causing levels like Chained Court, Hell's Arena, and even The Wall (backpack is a powerup) to have diminished awards.
