Currently when Doomrl fails to run under Linux the error messages flash for under a second before the terminal gets cleared. Unfortunately that means after running it ~20-30 times you might be able to make out a word or two from all the flashing but for the most part it's not possible to get any usable information this way. Currently things that I know of that will cause a crash are enabling midi music without timidity installed, a syntax error in the keybindings file, and tonight's problem... deleting (accidentally) then undeleting the directory Doomrl was in (I think a wav file failed to recover without corruption). Luckily the player/score wads are fine so I didn't lose any of my badges.

Edit: Actually it looks like I lost my elite diamond badge, but I'm 98% sure that was from obtaining the badge and then losing power before I got a chance to exit Doomrl. I'm guessing when you exit is when the player.wad gets written. Then after all that is when I deleted it...

Granted I don't think the game should have built in protection against deleting/undeleting, it'd just be nice to be able to read the error messages.

I've obtained this badge in 0.9.9, 0.9.9.1 and now in 0.9.9.3 and it feels a lot harder then it used to be. It took a healthy amount of tries in 0.9.9, I was able to get it rather quickly in 0.9.9.1, but this time after ~4-5 hours I finally started 'rage' quitting if the first level or two didn't go well. I've played untold amounts of this game ending only in deaths or wins, and this was the badge that finally broke me into quitting early.

For the actual run, I don't remember much of it. By the time I finished it I had been playing AoPc for about 3 hours straight, so I was well into the groove of moving as fast as possible (not because I was trying to be quick, just because I wanted this challenge over). I remember finding two homing phases early on, using one on level 13 after minimal exploration because it was full of barrels, the other on level 22 for the same reason. I used a phase after entering the Hellgate which put me close to the brothers behind the barrier, which saved me a bit of health. A couple of lucky berserk/invulnerabilities carried me until level 21. 22 was the phase, 23 was a quick stair find. Level 24 worried me, I showed up with ~4-5 large health packs and 'sober' (no powerups). It was a level full of small rooms with random lava pools, leaving me too exposed. There was a supercharge and an invulnerability globe on the level, but I couldn't get to either of them because of an arch-vile and mancubus. It took me all the healing I had, but I finally found the exit.

I wasn't going to bother posting this, but then I saw how quick it was so I figured might as well record it.

Being a huge fan of the single pistol + intuition build I had to rush to try it once I realized the trait caps had been changed. The plan was rush to intuition. grab a couple SoB, get WK and juggler then I'd be stable enough to start getting SoG. The final plan was to get EE x 2, Int x 2, Fin x 3, WK x 2, Jug, SoG x 5, SoB x 5, HR x 3 for a total of 23 levels. I grabbed dodgemaster on level 98 so it never came into play, I just didn't want have one of a trait that had multiple levels.

For equipment the progression went as follows:
Level 19 made tactical armor -> level 25 got Malek's armor, ditched the rest, level ~60 found the phasesift armor used for crossing lava.
Level 9 made tactical boots -> level ~35 found some phasesift boots, used an agility mod
Level 14 made a high powered chaingun -> level ~25 ditched it over ammo concerns. Ammo wasn't tight, but there was starting to be less of it.
Level 17 made a tactical rocket launcher -> level 82 found the Anti-Freak Jackal, which was easier for destroying walls since I already carried 10mm ammo.
Level 18 made both the tactical shotgun and hyperblaster -> level ~60 both were ditched when I found the nuclear plasma rifle.
I kept every minigun I found for the ammo storage. Three was overkill though since I never had to unload more than one.
Oh yeah, I forgot that I found some other uniques, but they were crap so I left them alone.

I took my starting pistol to P2T3 and already had Finx3 and SoGx4 when I found GCB. Initially I figured the starting pistol would be better due to it's faster firing speed but when I checked their speeds GCB was firing at .11 and my pistol at .10. So I grumbled, sacrificing the .01 difference for the larger clip, but I kept the pistol around. Once I hit SoGx5 (with Finx3), I checked both of them again. They both fired at .10, which make me believe that .10 is the fastest possible firing speed. The only faster combination I can think of is SoGx5, Finx3 and a T3 Blaster, but I wouldn't be surprised if that still only came to .10. The main point here is that for this type of build a P2B3 pistol is probably the way to go (EE takes care of accuracy).

Overall, I think Ao100 is definitely getting more interesting. With lava flooding levels, nukes being set, poisonous air and nightmare caves, the pace changes every few levels making it less boring than earlier versions. It would be nice if there was enough XP during a UV run to hit level 25, but by the time it'd happen it's not really important. Maybe next time I'll try an ammochain build, see if I can survive with much slower firing speed.

At one point I heard talk of letting the player bind custom functions to keys. It would be nice to be able to bind <shift>+<direction> keys and be able to check whether or not the player is in targeting mode. What I'd like to be able to do is bind the <shift>+<direction> keys to only move the targeting cursor, possibly entering targeting mode if convenient. With the amount of corner shooting required for UV Ao100, I'm getting really sick of dying when I stared walking around a corner when I want to be shooting around that corner. I'd much rather die to a tactical error than a typo.

It'd also be nice if the targeting cursor remembered the last target, regardless of whether or not it could be seen, but for some reason I thought that was already shot down.

Let's face it, corner shooting is very important and the source of aggravating mistakes for many players.

I just finished this game last night, but after it was over I had to get some sleep before posting. After finishing the new Ao100, I have two words, "I approve".

I made a decent amount of assemblies, most of them were just to get crossed of the list, but a few of them were used heavily. The first was the high powered chaingun I made on level 7. 1d9x4 is quite respectable at that stage of the game. I eventually ditched it around level 30 or so for ammo concerns, but had it just been a normal run I would have ended the game with it. I made an initial red nanofiber, but as luck would have it I found the onyx armor shortly after, effectively wasting the mods (I hadn't even starting wearing the nanofiber). The only other important assembly was the gravity boots, and it's a shame I didn't get them earlier.

As for traits, I slightly tweaked my standard Ao100 build, grabbing HR to offset my plans of a nanofiber armor and grabbing Iro instead of TaN at Game Hunter's recommendation. I had already grabbed SoG by the time I found the Anti-Freak, which was nice for opening walls, but poor at everything else (at this point I was viciously guarding ammo on the floor). Around level 50 or 60 is when I found the Blaster, which is AWESOME with SoGx3 and SoBx3. After modding it a bit, I ditched almost all the ammo I had (which was roughly 700-900 bullets). Both the nuclear weapons were found later, but didn't get much use. The nuclear plasma rifle was kinda nice, but I easily could have lived without it. After freeing up eight stacks worth of bullets I had plenty of room for cells had I not found the nuclear plasma rifle. Only used the nuclear BFG once, and it was completely an accident.

Level 84... words cannot explain the terror I felt for my Doomguy after I realized what I had stumbled into. Luckily I hadn't let myself 'get comfortable' so I was still paying attention to what I was doing, so I didn't make the 'one' wrong move that would have killed me. Trust me when I say there was more than 'one' wrong move to be made, I must spent 20 minutes on that level alone. Even with being extra careful there was still two or three times I was really worried I was not going to make it, standing in lava while having to shoot does that though.

The real treat of this run was when I found the nano pack. I rushed over to the wiki (I haven't even the slightest idea what special level somehow helps people with recipes) and decided on the gravity boots, with a backup of the nanofiber skin armor if I couldn't find agility. With luck, I finally found the last agility mod I needed on level 93. I already had a firing speed of .11 with P2T3 Blaster, Finx2 and Sogx3 so speed felt like the best choice. So I make the Gravity boots, put them on with the phaseshift armor, already having HRx2. I check my walk speed, it's 0.08. Yes I typed that correcty, I had a walking speed of zero point zero eight. Granted I decided to stick with the onyx armor, giving me only a mere .15 walking speed, but it was good enough.

Looking back, I'd be interested to see someone finish an ammochain UV Ao100. I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just trying to figure out what they would do without EEx2, Intx2 and SoGx3. Infinite ammo is one thing, but I feel there are times were accuracy and speed are far more important.

I saw Thomas's run, so I figured I'd give it a whirl. With a few more hours of trying I think I could shave off a few minutes, I almost killed Cybie at 10:30 once, but I was moving too fast and died instead. The idea behind this run was just grab the stairs as fast as possible, killing only what was needed to get me by. I really thought I was going to die when I met up with my first Rev, but I spent an extra few seconds and barely made it away. I ended up finding the Halls of Carnage and decided to clear it so I'd have a chance against the Cyberdemon. I'm glad I did because I don't remember seeing a nuke.

My first N! win in the new version, looks like the first diamond posted too. It took a couple of tries to make it to the Chained Court, but once I did it was pretty much smooth sailing. Kill as much as possible as fast as possible and locate the stairs. I killed everything in Hellgate, thinking I may get a badge, but it turns out merely making it through would have been fine. Didn't matter either way though, I was berserked the entire time in Hellgate. Actually I only lost berserk roughly 3 times after the court. I was a little nervous around hell 6, it was an arachnatron cave and I wasn't berserked. Luckily the first mob fixed that problem, and I still had plenty of healing.

Unfortunately I didn't get anything new this run, but my first marine of the new version makes up for it. So for now I have more gold badges then silver.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.2] (Linux w/sound) Game "won't" run

I just woke up and was very happy to see 0.9.9.2 released so I rushed to download a copy. I then tried to run it in my 32bit jail. It flashed some messages and kicked me back to the console. So I re-ran it ~20-30 more times and was pretty sure I saw the word 'timidity' flash by. So I went to '/etc' and created a directory called 'timidity', then I touched 'timidity.cfg' inside of said directory. TA-DA! Doomrl now runs fine. Strange part is, 0.9.9.1 ran fine without it.

Sorry if this is worded poorly, I generally try to not communicate until after I've had a coffee.

Edited to put a few forgotten words in.... and then to rearrange some words, damn I need breakfast

I know 0.9.9.2 is right around the corner, but I figured I'd post this just in case. I'm in the middle of an Ao100 game and have noticed that armor depots don't always repair my boots. I'm wearing

This mortem is brought to you by, the Blaster. The run started normal, got lucky with Hell's Arena on level 3, so I had dualgunner. I cleared it pretty easily (I think it only took a small medpack or two). Right around dlevel 10 or 11 is when I found the Blaster. Once I realized it shot through walls I started hoping to see the Wall (actually the Vault too, but I changed my mind by then). As luck would have it, the Wall is generated. I shot a single line through the wall and that was enough to clear the level without taking any damage. Shortly after that I make to the Hellgate. I grabbed what I needed from the first room and was about to use a phase, when I realized shooting through the wall was a better idea. I dig around a bit and kill both archviles. At that point I just let the wall fall and cleaned up the rest of the first room. The bruiser brothers went down easily, mainly because at this point I have a P1 pistol, P1 Blaster, SoGx3, SoBx3 and a level or two of Finese. I realized at that point I might have a good chance at a full win.

Things are going smoothly, then I find an invulnerability close the entrance the Spider Caves. I grab it and run in. I didn't even bother seeking cover, I just sat in the middle of the room picking off arachnatrons. I grab the rewards and am getting pretty hopeful. I clear a few more levels and find a third homing phase device. I make it to hell level 7, only three more stairs to go. That's when I found the invulnerability. Now up until this point I have 100% kills, but I decided not to be greedy so I grab the globe and pop all three homing phase devices. I've made it to the Cyberdemon...

This will probably be my last run of 0.9.9.1, but I think it was a fitting end to the version. Also this run has convinced me SoBx3 is better then MGK, even though I had the Blaster to cut down on reloading I still think I would have been okay without it. Maybe not as easy or a full win, but the damage/knockback is too much to pass up, even for free reloading.

Requests For Features / A different Intuition symbol

Is there any chance the character used for intuition can be changed? Either to an 'x' for something user definable? The current symbol is too hard to distinguish from a floor tile and constantly using the look command is ruining the fast paced coffee-break style of the game for me. I figure this is a reasonable request given that a tile version is in the future. It wouldn't be fair for the tile version to use a unique symbol and the ascii to use an ambiguous one. Plus it'd be nice not to shoot at bloody floors or get killed by mobs I should have seen.

Well that was fun. I think I found my new favorite Ao100 build. The main idea was to get Intx2, SoBx3, SoGx3 and whizkid, so I wouldn't have to waste ammo shooting in the dark and to maximize how much damage 100 bullets could do. Too bad I never found a Blaster, making it P2T3 would have made it possibly the best weapon ever. Even with Finx2, SoGx3 and a P2T3 pistol (my starting one) I had a firing speed of 0.17 and +6 damage to each shot. With the Blaster's starting speed 0.7 and it's ammo regeneration, it's hard to imagine a more powerful weapon.

I started the run using the chaingun, switching to the combat shotgun once I hit Intx2 at level 6. Once I picked up plasma, I ditched the chaingun entirely. Then I found the Beretta, which would have been great normally, but already had plans for a P2T3 single-shot pistol and in single shot mode the Beretta is roughly a P2B3.5 pistol. So I kept it for a few levels then ditched it for the inventory space, right around the time I found the Jackhammer. I figured the Jackhammer would chew through ammo, so I didn't bother with it. A few levels later after I had taken my first level of SoG I found the nuclear plasma rifle. It was awesome. I put SoG on hold to grab a few levels of Tan/Whizkid. At some point I find the phaseshift boots, throw an agility mod on it and am pretty happy. I find two sets of phaseshift armor, put AP on one and kept the other blank. Now I'm walking around at clevel 19 with all the traits I want, then I find the Onyx armor pack. I immediately put it on the blank phaseshift armor and ditch the rest of my armor (including a blank onyx armor). After that it was smooth sailing to the end.

When I found the Trigun on level 99 I kept it but didn't use it. I was only getting a 0.2 firing speed with it and my trusty starting pistol had 0.17, so I stuck with the faster gun. I entered level 100 invulnerable with Trigun, but since I hadn't nuked any other levels I wasn't going to start now. Then I find the Cybernetic armor after I had finished clearing the level. Didn't matter if I put it on or not, since there was no more enemies left.

Over all I think this was a lot more fun than an ammochain Ao100, plus using bullets/nuclear weapons meant I always had plenty of ammo.

Normally I wouldn't brag post about a mortem that wasn't N!, but my side arm was just too good.

This run is the practice run for attempting the same thing under UV (Ao100, YAAM, no master traits). The main concern I had going into this was having enough ammo to kill everything. So for traits I figured getting intuition 2 right away would be a good start, knowing where mobs are means not wasting ammo shooting in the dark. After that whizkid was the next on the list, to put all the mods to good use. Juggler came next, conserving ammo means switching weapons a lot. Then finally SoB and the other level of whizkid, both were helpful in maximizing the amount of damage an ammo stack could deal.

For weapons, I started with the combat shotgun, slapping the first three power mods I found on it. The rocket launcher was mainly used to destroy walls, but I used it a couple of times on mobs. All the early bulk mods went on my first/last plasma rifle, it gave me more shots before reloading, but more importantly let me carry that much more ammo. Around level 18 I found my first firestorm pack and since I don't use rockets much, I just kept it. Well that paid off when ~4 levels later I find a super shotgun. I throw on the firestorm and two bulk mods, knowing that I was never going to get reloader.

So I progress using the combat shotgun as the main attack, the super shotgun as a close up punch and the plasma rifle for archviles. Then I find the Revenant's Launcher. I pick it up, look at it, realize I can't juggler to it from my backpack then put it back down. Continue on. I find the Anti-Freak Jackal, pick it up, realize it'll probably explode the ammo on the ground, so I put it back down. At some point around this time I find my second firestorm pack, throw it on my super for B2F2 and feel that I'm doing pretty well. Ammo is still a concern, but I'm handling it well. The I find the Trigun. Finally I find a pistol worth using, so I retire my combat shotgun, but keep it around. Unfortunately I had already committed to getting DM, so SoG was out of the picture but the Trigun was amazing for conserving ammo. At some point not long after Trigun I find my final firestorm pack.

So now I'm walking around, killing with Trigun/ decked out super shotgun. I can relax a little bit at this point, but I'm still watching my ammo like a hawk. Two lucky levels in a row and I've now got the Railgun and Malek's armor. The Railgun makes arachnotron caves a cake walk, since I'll always end up with more ammo then I can carry. Malek's armor means I can relax how much armor I need, giving me more space for ammo. I grabbed the Cybernetic Armor in case I found a Nano pack, which let me drop the gothic armor that I was saving for that purpose. I never bother using the Jackhammer, the super shotgun was just that good. In the end, I never used the Minigun, I just carried it for the ammo storage, but I never had to unload it. The blaster was found very late in the game, I kept it just in case, but never needed to use it.

The real treat this run was the B2F3 super shotgun. I keep mentioning it because it was just that good. The knockback was crazy, bruiser brothers got pushed back ~4-5 squares, and with intuition 2, shooting around a corner meant they pretty much never saw me. Juggler insured that at any moment I could just blast something in the face with it. Overall it had an amazing damage to ammo ratio.

I think when I do this in UV, I'm going to get SoG instead of HR/DM and just hope it'll come in handy. To anyone else who is thinking of trying this, never under estimate how much ammo you are going to need.

I've seen other bug reports that mention badges don't get awarded when dying to JC, but this is the first I've seen of not getting a badge when nuking JC, even if the badge is for killing him.

Honestly I'm not sure if this is a bug, or intended behavior but I figured I'd post this for completeness.
