Title: New badges and medals ideas
Post by: Gargulec on December 30, 2010, 18:20
Achievements are fun, so why not propose more of them? Kornel recommends that you post in this topic, so he might get ideas!

To begin, with my ideas:

Slayer Gold: Completing AoB with 100% kills on HNTR
Slayer Platinum: Completing AoB with 100% kills on HMP
Slayer Diamond: Completing AoB with 100% kills on UV

Singleton Silver: Complete AoMr without DG on HNTR
Singleton Gold: Complete AoMr without DG on UV

Medieval Man Medal: Playing an entire game without anything more than first-tier traits.
Chainsaw Massacre Medal: Hitting Cyberdemon with chainsaw.
Dodger's Pride: Uses more than 20 Phase Devices in a single game.
1DVS BSTD Badge: 50% kills without attacking anything in one game.
Spider Lover: 50 kills using only Arachnotron-fire in one game.

A few months back I proposed some changes to the current badge groups. Here's the post (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,2955.msg26459.html#msg26459): it's big but covers everything pretty extensively.

As far as new badges go, I mention a Gatekeeper Gold badge (Clear UV Hellgate), which could be expanded to a series.

Gatekeeper Bronze: Defeat the Bruiser Brothers
Gatekeeper Silver: Exit Hellgate alive on Ultra-violence
Gatekeeper Platinum: Defeat the Bruiser Brothers on Nightmare!
(Luckily, BB count CAN be measured given that there's only two in a game.)

Although it doesn't seem that practical, running/phasing through Hellgate is a really easy way to get through it. What makes killing the Bruisers worth a Plat on N! is that the first wave is hard to get rid of, and the Imps will just open the door if you phase past (not to mention the Bruisers are gonna be fast). Unfortunately there's no real Diamond equivalent unless you wanna add, say, AoMs or AoMr/AoSg.

Including the Compet-n medals in some badges would be cool. For example:

Racer Bronze: Beat standard game in under an hour
Racer Bronze: Beat Angel of Pacifism with Compet-n Silver
Racer Gold: Beat standard game with Compet-n Silver
Racer Platinum: Beat Angel of Pacifism with Compet-n Platinum
Racer Diamond: Beat standard game with Compet-n Platinum

The last one sounds nearly impossible, actually. In spite of playing on even ITYTD, you'll need either sufficient rockets or the BFG (that is, complete HA or HoC or carefully get it from CoS) to down Cybie. (Alternatively there's a zerker route, but that takes leveling and leveling takes time). In any case, the luck and experience needed is at least of Diamond level, so I think it's fair. Changing Gold/Diamond to HNTR might make more sense, but speed is hard all by itself and the difference between ITYTD and HNTR probably isn't enough to make a big deal.

Some medals:

Firefighter's Trophy: Clear Phobos Arena without taking damage (probably can do a check before/after level on HP for this)
Personal Mortar: Move at least fifteen spaces with a single rocket jump
Suicidal Hopper: Make at least twenty rocket jumps in a single game
Dead Heart Medal: Die with at least 100% health within one second (great way to keep track of how many times you've been screwed)

Medals;

Warriors Pride; Ao100 with meelee weapons only.
Brutality Medallion; Ao100 100% kills with meelee only.
Knuckle Sandwich; Ao100 with fists only.
Phobos fist; A0100 100% kills with fists only.

Perfectionists Pin; Win a game as a conquerer with all possible dark areas uncovered.
Masters mace; Win a game with only basic traits.
Gunslingers glove; All kills done with pistols but no SOAG

Some more "Try to take no damage" stuff:

(hidden medal)
Chessmaster's Token - Fully clear Hell's Arena on UV AoI or UV AoMs.

(medal)
Steel Nerves - 25 kills without taking damage - 10% HP or less.

I just got myself a few more ideas;

Sam's shotgun: Kill 200 formers in one game.
Hunter's trophy: Kill -every- type of enemy in one game.
Multi medallion; Achieve 5 different medallions in one game.
Kite Shield; Cyberdemon killed with Cyberdemon having no ammo.
Friendly bullet; Full win without dealing any damage yourself to the final boss.

Some good ideas in this thread. With respect to this one:

Racer Bronze: Beat standard game in under an hour
Racer Bronze: Beat Angel of Pacifism with Compet-n Silver
Racer Gold: Beat standard game with Compet-n Silver
Racer Platinum: Beat Angel of Pacifism with Compet-n Platinum
Racer Diamond: Beat standard game with Compet-n Platinum
I like the idea, but I think the low end is wrong. The proposed Racer Bronze and Racer Silver badges amount to giving people a free bonus badge for their first ITYTD melee win (seriously, how do you spin out an ITYTD melee win past about 40-45 minutes, let alone 60?) and for their first AoPc win (I can't imagine an HNTR AoPc win taking as long as 30 minutes), respectively. I'd probably go for:

Racer Bronze: Win standard game inside 60 minutes without using melee attacks.
Racer Silver: Win standard game inside 30 minutes.
Racer Gold: Win standard game inside 20 minutes.
Racer Platinum: Win AoPc inside 10 minutes.
Racer Diamond: Win standard game inside 10 minutes.

I actually really dislike the idea of the time-based medals/badges.  DoomRL is a roguelike first, and I feel the badges in particular should be geared towards core game skills.  I'm not as opposed to the turn-count medals, though I don't know that we need badges for them as well.

and for anecdotal times, my first AoPC (hntr) win was 31:09 :)
Title: Re: New badges and medals ideas
Post by: Thomas on January 01, 2011, 18:40
I consider beating the game quickly to be one of the core game skills in this case. DoomRL is a very easy roguelike that can be beaten very quickly, and the badges (combined with the challenge games) are designed to give players an incentive to try out other ways of playing the game to make it more challenging/fun. One of the ways you can make DoomRL more difficult would be to try and beat it very quickly.

I agree that beating the game in under 60 minutes is maybe too easy, even for a bronze badge. I'd also say that it should focus more on AoH, considering that there are no platinum/diamond badges for AoH yet.

Speedrunner Bronze: Win standard game in 40 minutes.
Speedrunner Silver: Win standard game in 25 minutes.
Speedrunner Gold: Win standard UV in 25 minutes.
Speedrunner Platinum: Win AoH in 10 minutes.
Speedrunner Diamond: Win N! AoH in 10 minutes!

If it's possible, I think it would be interesting to see some badges/medals for performance between games and not just within one game.

For example:
Massacre Medallion - Two consecutive 100% kill victories
Elite Pin - Beating Cybie twice in a row

Obviously there are many different ways we can extend similar rewards across multiple games.
Any takers?

And I suppose it would be nice to have medals for something that is unusual, like we currently have Aurora's Medalion or Gamblers Shield - medals for the things that are far not nececary for the completion and are not shoving the skill of the player. We have badges for the skill and medals for fun I suppose.

Also it would be good to track on what level you've got the medal in your history, for instance
On level 14 he scored 25 consecutive kills,
On level 21 he pulled his 25th lever,

And since it's the thread for new medals&badges
Runner's Medallion - Spend less than 10% turns cautious.

Everyman Bronze: Get to level 12 in AoHu.
Everyman Silver: Win AoHu.
Everyman Gold: Win AoHu on HMP.
Everyman Platinum: AoHu on Nightmare!
Everyman Diamond: AoHu on N! without Badass (or without TaN, but I don't want yet another impossible diamond badge)

Soldier's Medal: Clear the wall on AoHu. (I almost did it on my first try, not too bad)
Army Distinguished Service Cross: Clear Spiders' Lair on AoHu. (I'm laughing just thinking about how hard this is)
Medal of Honor: Win AoHu as a conqueror. (Almost certainly impossible)

Medals do not necessarily promote anything -- they are an oblique way of tracking achievements.  So in a sense, if there are cheaters, they will be remembered for all time with their l33t h4xx0r medal.

And no, t hat way of writing it is more obnoxious than what I intended.

Hellraiser Bronze: Locate the Arena Master
Hellraiser Silver: Defeat the Arena Master
Hellraiser Gold: Defeat the Arena Master UV/AoSh
Hellraiser Platinum: Defeat the Arena Master on Nightmare!
Hellraiser Diamond: Defeat the Arena Master N!/AoSh

Since this new development in the game as occurred, it seems right to add a new badge series for it.

Alternatively AoSh could be replaced with AoP(u) so as to remove much of the zerking potential. (If I'm not mistaken by the mortems, you haven't "defeated" the Arena Master until everything in the level is destroyed, so this is harder than it sounds.)

Hellraiser Diamond: Defeat the Arena Master N!/AoSh

how about UV/AoHu for more variety in the Diamonds?  should still be pretty insane yet possible.

Arena Master on UV/AoHu would be the easiest diamond by a long shot. WINNING UV/AoHu would be the easiest diamond. It's just not possible to make a badge that's diamond-hard without it being on Nightmare! difficulty.
(Except for UV with fists, because that's just ridiculous and is probably the HARDEST diamond.)

EDIT: Oh hey, there's also UV/AoRA/100%. UV/AoHu/90%+ would be diamond-difficulty, then.

I'm not sure about AoSh, though. AoSh is the easiest challenge for everything but beating the Arena Master, so I guess I can see where you're coming from.

Angel of Purity is another possibility (as mentioned), but I think even HAVING rockets could make this a lot easier than not, especially with the respawning otherwise. AoSh forces you to knockback practically everything into the lava, no easy feat whatsoever, and is among the most fair ways to beat N! HArena so that this can at least be practiced on multiple occasions.

Speaking of UV Diamonds, There's also Gatekeeper Diamond (UV Hellgate clear w/o damage) but it's probably the easiest Diamond...

Hellraiser Silver: Defeat the Arena Master
Do we really need to add an easier Silver badge than Scavenger or Strongman?
Title: Re: New badges and medals ideas
Post by: Game Hunter on February 25, 2011, 16:12
It's not like these can't be meddled around with. Hellraiser Bronze could be "Locate and defeat the Arena Master" and then set Hellraiser Silver for "Defeat the Arena Master on Ultra-violence". Just seems like the Arena Master isn't getting enough love yet, but maybe it's for the best that he's a little more secluded within the game without saying "oh, by the way, you get to fight him".
Title: Re: New badges and medals ideas
Post by: MaiZure on February 25, 2011, 17:49
My two cents: I think this badge series would be better if you had to kill *ALL* sub-boss types in one run (AM, SH, and LE). This reqires some love from RNG to find the Armory.

EDIT: Not sure if AoD should be considered since there is already a badge series directly related to killing him (Longinus)

I recently completed this self-imposed restriction in hopes of finding a hidden medal...nothing - but I think it's a neat idea:

The Twisted Cup - Fully cleared three cavern levels in a row (UV+).
The Twisted Chalice - Fully cleared three cavern levels in a row (UV+) while clvl 6 or lower.
The Twisted Grail - Fully cleared three arachnotron cavern levels in a row (UV+) while clvl 6 or lower.
The Twisted Keg - Fully cleared three arachnotron cavern levels in a row (UV+) while clvl 6 or lower when a combat shotgun hasn't even spawned yet.
The Twisted Tsunami - Fully cleared three arachnotron cavern levels in a row (UV+) while clvl 6 or lower when a combat shotgun hasn't even spawned yet and then go on to fully win the game.

I feel like you deserve some kind of a reward for when the RNG screws you over and you screw it right back. Technically this suggestion only comes after making it through caco>arac>arac as stated, BUT STILL.

Good idea, though I'd add the qualifier "but not with the BFG 9000 or any of its assemblies".
Title: Re: New badges and medals ideas
Post by: Ander Hammer on March 17, 2011, 15:00
A nice idea, but I see it being awarded one of two ways:

Waiting for monsters to crowd in the middle of a shallow barrels level and setting off a chain reaction, or

with the BFG9000, the only non-nuke weapon that could plausibly do it without help.

There aren't many things that do enough damage over a big enough area that you get at the right time for those numbers. Really, this medal cries out for masterfully crafted BFG shots. Menacing with spikes of shotgun shell and encircled with bands of red armor.

Also, is this one shot, or one attack? It seems possible, though unlikely and sort of wasteful, to overcharge a sniper-modded plasma rifle in a long hallway full of 18 formers... if that's even possible in anyone's lifetime.

Maybe instead of 'one shot' it could be a sort of chain system, at least one kill each x seconds/turns, though then of course there's the problem of certain builds getting it on accident on a normal run.

I guess I'm the only one who thought that a quick trip to the City of Skulls would get you these rather easily.

It's not like medals (secret or otherwise) have to be hard, either. Is Aurora Medallion hard? Gutts' Heart? Is Hell Champion Medal, or Hell Armorer Medal, or Grim Reaper's Badge hard? There are plenty of medals you get without even thinking of it, it's okay to have medals on the easy side that make players feel empowered.

There, fixed it for you.  But I agree -- medals are to commerate in-game events, and not all in-game events have to be RNG-awfully hard to figure out.

It would still be pretty tricky to hit 18 kills in one shot in the City of Skulls without the BFG.

But yeah. Lower the numbers, allow the BFG, or just attach it to the City if it's the only reasonable place to even begin to try and get the possible badge.
Title: Re: New badges and medals ideas
Post by: Nameless on March 22, 2011, 00:52
18 kills you might be able to pull off with a shotgun, a pain elemental, and probably invulnerability (or at least berserk) on any floor. 9 kills wouldn't be that hard on the early floors of UV, you'd just wait for the enemies to group in the center of the level and shoot a rocket. Both would be even more plausible on AoMC.

Firedancer - dodge more than 1000 non-nuclear damage.
Bloody Mess! - gib more than 200 enemies in one game.
Memento Mori - avoid potentially killing blow (I don't know how this must be calculated, but I just like idea).
Lucky Bastard - stay alive with 1% of health.
The Highlander - win game without any use of armor. Someway opposite to weaponless win challenge.
