I still can't quite wrap my mind around Light Travel being deemed more difficult than Berserk. Right, you have limited space, but who needs space if you have a chainsaw? I generally have no more than 3 medkits on a more or less normal run anyway, which leaves me space for a spare armor and - combined with the prepared weapon slot - some useful stuff for later in the game: a phase or two for the anomaly, a RL plus some ammo for the Wall, a couple of Skulls for Limbo. Did Limbo for the first time on this run, since it seems a lot less daunting than the Mortuary. Maybe I would have been just as succesful in the latter - the nanofiber red I made combined with berzerking works wonders - but had the sign next to the stairs said 'Mortuary' I think I'd have skipped it. Great first run of Limbo though, 4 out of 5 Viles on the center island, with the left one being clear, allowing for a little retreat and regroup. Lava is my new best friend.

Oh and I found the bloody DS on dlev 17, nearly was tempted into spoiling the secret too; had only 15 minutes before I had to shut down and start dinner. Couldn't come up with any good ideas, unfortunately, so I thought I'd just try again another time and beamed out on the stairs to the UC. Next time, Gadget, next time.

So first AoLT run in the new version, immediate win. Contrary to AoB, which I've tried at least half a dozen times now, with no success whatsoever. Dangle.

And possibly a bug here, sadly I forgot to make screenshots: I had acid-proof boots on for a good part of the run, which worked fine most of the time. In one instance, halfway through Hell, I had to squeeze between an acid barrel and lava river to get to a Baron on the other side. The Baron shot and naturally destroyed the acid barrel, and the pool it formed ate right through my boots (then at about 35% durability), taking about 3-4% health per turn. Is this a bug, or does the resistance decrease with the durability?

Being on the hunt for more silver and not having survived the last couple of AoB runs, I thought I'd give AoMC a try again. With Cateye of course, because - let's face it - I'm a very big chicken. All went pretty well, Hell Arena was no problem, and even on CC+ I was under no real threat - although getting blasted by the Arena Master once was more than enough to my tastes.

Was gearing up for the Anomaly and saw the steps to the Military Base thinking "Ah, fish in a barrel". Sadly, I turned out to be one of the fish when I made one false move: stepped into point blank range of an elite sergeant, who of course happened to be armed with a super shotgun. 100% health, B-modded blue armour - no use. Dead in one shot.

Welcome to 1899, a steam punk roleplaying game created from all the best elements encountered during and an imagination honed by nearly 20 years of RPG experience.

This thread starts out by explaining the basics of 1899 and is meant for hosting the first story, The Hidden Hands of the Aether. As such, I hereby kindly request anybody that is not a recognized player to refrain from posting in this topic. For any questions, comments or discussion, be it 'out of character' talk by the players or suggestions and queries from non-participants, I hereby direct you to the Lock and Feather Inn, which is set up specificially for this purpose.

The setting used for 1899 heavily borrows from Games Workshop's Warhammer Fantasy RPG and White Wolf's World of Darkness, in the sense that both are set in a copy of our own world. The latter uses the exact same world, albeit a couple of shades darker; the former uses the same geopolitical basis, which is then rebuilt through the lens of fantasy.

1899 falls somewhere in between: the game is set in 19th century Victorian London, England, and although the country will look more or less the same as it did in our world and the people will sound the same, it's the influence of the Aether that makes the differences so much more striking than the similarities.

Be advised that the title 1899 was chosen to reference to the 19th century as we know it, and to reflect the fact that the world is on the treshold of some big event. The story (or possibly stories) itself doesn't necessarily take place in that year, nor is the year 1899 in the game laced with the same key events as it is in our history.

Requests For Features / Different confirmation keys

I just threw away another perfectly good speedrun on dlev 17. I killed the Cyberdemon and am rushing through the level exit confirmation and little story, after which a level-up screen appears and I select Ironman - I'm furiously jabbing away at the keys of course, trying to get it over with a.s.a.p.

This level of Ironman totally screws up the game, as I'm relying on my Berzerk trait to get me through the final battle. With IRO1, this used to be technically impossible in 0996, and I have no reason to assume it's changed.

Either/or:
* Screw the manual confirmation of leaving levels 8 + 16 - it's not like you have a choice - and make it possible to skip the intermissions as well (same as the SkipIntro value in the config)
* Use different keys to trigger the progression of the 'story elements' and confirming trait choice

Crap. I wrote a really neat story about this run, then lost it all by clicking the wrong button on my browser. I'll let the mortem speak for itself instead, except for this: the GCB with fire time 0.09 and severe knockback is the ultimate form of combat.

I set out with 2 simple goals:
1) enough melee kills to improve my rank to Demon
2) 100% kill-rate

Since I'd already played MVm before, I thought I'd stick with that, using a shotgun for backup. Relying mainly on the shotgun, all went pretty well until I lost my RL to a fast food franchise in Deimos Lab. The elusive Shambler and its mate were no match for a piercing chainsaw this time around, so that kinda makes up for the nasty surprise I suffered on the first AoSh run of this version.

I had to skip the Wall for lack of firepower, and decided not to risk CoS - I forgot to pack a double shotgun. The difference on HoC is very big, and I would have been in deep shit if it weren't for my lava boots. Since I skipped CoS I decided to leave the BFG be as well; I had no intention of doing the Mortuary, which I'd only done once or twice in the previous version, with mixed results.

Things went wobbly after the Cyberdemon. I lost armour after armour, took a lot of hits, but the lava boots were a freaking lifesaver. At the Vaults, I kinda lost track of things and by the time I was done, I had no armour left - a red on 14% and some other piece of crap. I found another badly damaged armour on the next level, was kinda lost in thought when I left that.... and found myself having descended into the Mortuary.

That turned out to be an amazing rollercoaster: nearly every time I was about to be toast, I stepped on a Supercharge, and with the 2 Reds found at the entrance plus the Nuclear BFG I landed on when I used a homing phase to get out of the only extremely threatening situation, I actually drilled through everything a lot quicker than I expected.

With the Angelic Armour and the subsequent find of an assault shotgun, the rest became a cakewalk, so much so that I decided to go for double or nothing and aim for my first confrontation with JC. Needless to say this proved little difficulty with the Spear and Angelic Armour combined, coupled with MVm.
Result: a bucket load of Badges I never expected to land so soon. Good times, good times....

Deimos Lab appears to have a drive-thru window. Screenshot was taken afterward, but setting is the same. I'm standing on top of a combat pistol, full inventory. I drop a RL to be able to pick up the pistol for Armorer purposes. The dropped item melts, which means I shoved it through a wall... yeah I kick ass.

Might not be a bug per se, but it should either have landed just west of either chaingun, or John Romero [nice one :)] should have been unable to drop.

Of all the standard concepts that DoomRL has to offer I've understood at least the basics, except one: chainfiring. I understand the thrill of unleasing an insane amount of bullets into a demon that just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, but the whole alternate fire function usually goes right by me. I hardly ever play chain builds, probably for just this reason.

What are preferred tactics? Preferred weapons? Special mentions such as the Mortuary (ick!)?

Shotgunnery, take two. Definitely better, even though I wussed out in the end. Same clean start, same Deimos Lab. Decided to leave the Shamblers be this time.

First time I saw the Containment Area. Since it's paired with the Wall, I should have kinda seen it coming, but running into an immediate dead end was still somewhat of a letdown. First time on the Abyssal Plains, too, which I like better than the City of Skulls. Might be something post-traumatic, though.

It was supposed to be a YAAM run too, and I thought I had been pretty thorough, but when I looked at the char screen at the end of the Vaults -for the first time in this version, nice to see it has been updated to reflect time and kill info - I saw I missed no less than 14 creatures, upon which I decided not to waste much more time. Or effort even, since I could probably have taken the Mastermind head on as well.

Worst point was aiming to having DM before Cyberdemon, then looking at the experience meter after clearing out level 15 and reading "8/98%". Good times, all in all, and nice new insights into 0997.

Ok, so allowed myself 1 more Too Young To Die run to firmly re-establish my grip, and then went on to HNTR with the Angel of Shotgunnery. Nice chance at a shiny new badge, and I like shotguns anyway, so why not. Even though I took several moderate beatings throughout Phobos, it went pretty well, Anomaly was a cakewalk. On Deimos 1 I encounter stairs to the Deimos Lab, and - hungry for experience as I am - I descend.

First impressions: nice new level, nice touch with the teleporters. I can hear Arachnotrons running around, but with a P-modded double shotgun and a tactical (and lotsa cover), I shall know no fear. Right. Until I pull the four levers I find where the Arachnotrons used to live.

Lotsa screaming, and a Shambler appears. "Hmmm", goes I, "I've seen these before, I still have lotsa cover, should be a piece of cake." Then a second one appears. I swallow hard as my sphincter contracts, then quickly decide to roll with it and make use of cover as much as possible, eventually running off of the little island in the acid lake since I got shot into it a couple of times, only speeding my defeat.

Here's the kicker: I had 3 armours, 5 large medpacks and enough shells to arm a moderately sized African country. I could not kill one single shambler. I got one on mortally wounded and got at least 5 more relatively close-ranged shots with the P-modded in and still it refused to die. What the HELL??
These bastards must have taken at least 150 shells, no way did I ever need this much ammo for the Shambler in the 0996 Armory, which I virtually always used to kill in the same fashion: cornershooting with a double shotty.

In hindsight, maybe the Tristar I found would have made a difference (though I seem to recall it packs cells, which I naturally didn't have), but by then I was too flabbergasted to even want to win anymore. It'll be awhile before I'll be pulling those levers again. Poor Igor.

Bug Reports / [0997G WinXP] Lag due to sound/music hiccups

At totally random points on totally random levels, the sound/music engine runs amok (affects both). Everything starts stuttering, as if all sounds are played twice instead of once, the latter coming out with a slight delay, almost sounding like an echo. Not running anything parallel to DRL, except the usual background noise. Basic sound settings.

Sometimes it's fixed when loading a new level, sometimes it isn't. Any clues? Thx.

Having very much enjoyed the PBF experience as a player and having a lot of time on my hands, currently, I'm thinking of opening a thread as GM/DM/ST/Big Kahuna myself. Point is: I can't or won't decide yet on what type of game this should be. I've seen various good ideas floating around here, and I have experience with a number of settings/systems from the pen&paper scene, but I think I'd most like to try something new.

Please, anyone who is interested in playing, respond and let me know what kind of game you're looking for. I want to hear general descriptions (eg. 'dungeoncrawling', 'steampunk', 'postapocalyptic'), not brands/systems. We'll see what evolves.

Although I was a far cry from a good player before, it took quite some getting used to the feel of it again, even on entry level. I banked on Cateye being a lot of help there, which turned out to be a good choice - it compensated for a lot of sloppiness on my part. Doing the Anomaly without taking damage - not being pestered by Lost Souls and Cacos - was a lot easier than I recalled, and with invuls before both the Cyberdemon and the Mastermind both turned out to be trivialities.

Finding the Wall on 11 instead of 7 makes an incredible difference (even though I prayed for a missile launcher to use against the Brothers); previously, this was a point at which a lot of my runs failed, since I didn't want to skip it, but was often too easily overrun by the Knights. These couple of levels of experience will make all the difference for me.
The Military Base is awesome: this comes out of the original as well, right, or Doom2? I couldn't complete it though, since some critters were stuck in the bottom right corner which I couldn't blast myself into. What's up with that?

I tried all the other special levels I found as well, actually more or less hoping to die and see how well I did, but they were all easier than I expected. The new Spider's Lair is definitely an improvement, with lots of cover to make use of. The Phaseshift armor I found before made a huge difference there too, especially combined with INT2/MCe. I skipped the Lava Pits since I finally wanted the run to be over. Oh and not die sinking into the muck on the floor, since I had nothing to protect me.

Having taken this hurdle, it's on to HNTR and a string of casualties on my part. Having scored this many awards in one run will make it worth it though. Don't think that happened before and it won't be again any time soon.
