Title: Dead Bodies Everywhere
Post by: AahRealMonsters on April 17, 2012, 11:36

My humble request is for some decorative corpses. It's not uncommon to bump into tortured souls throughout the Doom games, though you can't interact with any of them. Some twitch, but their just background objects like trees are. I think there are a few platform versions (like the PlayStation) that allows players to shoot them to elicit a groan, but that's about it.

You take these poor bums for example:

In Doom RL, they might be cool to generate here and there not only for demonic esthetics, but also to bump up the corpse count on a map. Good meaty fodder to make blood skulls and the like all the more useful. They may add a ghoulish element of strategy the way exploding barrels do. And that's pretty much it. I hope this isn't too fancy a request.

If this ever is a go, I hope Derek Yu illustrates it. That man is a genius of pixels.

I forgot all about those! It's really been too long since I last played the original. Great idea by my book. Now that you mention it, I think most levels (those with larger rooms/spaces at least) could do with a little more interior design than just the barrels, comparable to the trees around the entry.

I like this. Adds a few more room types beyond "Hallway, empty room, warehouse room, vault room, room with 80 goddamn barrels in it oh my god". Sure, a room with aesthetic obstacles is basically a fancy-fied empty room, but it'd still be more interesting. =B

Y'know, I really like those trees. I think they would go great in a water-logged swampy level reminiscent of The Marshes. I forget, do they show up again in the Unholy Cathedral level?

No, but you do get those fancy double doors.

Tracked :)

Awesome idea. This, combined with (AI fixed) trees present in some map types, will make the levels much more unique.

I wonder if there are other, similar things in Doom that could be added as well? I can't think of anything right now.

The torches (http://www.rpgamer.com/pointsofview/spoofs/doom1.jpg) maybe?

Or a strung up Commander Keen (http://www.fpsteam.it/img2004/doom/doom2_10.jpg), for some reason...

Even better: lamp posts (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/1832/the_gamasutra_quantum_leap_awards_.php) (scroll down a bit, couldn't link to the picture directly).

You can even add some effect that boosts vision range when around them. Same goes for the torches, by the way.

And pretty much unrelated, though I don't blame Google for not being able to tell the difference: Castle von Doom built out of Construx (http://construxion.tripod.com/doom.html). I still have a box of this stuff lying around somewhere :)

Hmm.. Armor of Doom (Dr.) should be a unique item...

@LuckyDee: Quadrauple-post, a new record!

Creating AI that specifically doesn't attack its target if there's a cell with CF_BLOCKMOVE but not CF_BLOCKLOS in between isn't very easy with the curent LOS algorithms available. Furthermore, I'm not all that keen on making my own, since it would involve some fairly intensive looping that's already being done during LOS calculations anyway. (Kornel said he's not making a CF_BLOCKMISSILE flag, so no dice there.) It should still be flexible enough to let the modder decide whether or not the monster fires in all move-LOS related instances.

Also keep in mind that there's not a whole lot of room to work with. These objects should be limited to large rooms and the arena/cave layouts (although I must admit it will spice up the latter quite nicely).

Haha @ Commander Keen. Could be a rare event.

Looking back at the sprite sheets for Doom 2 and realizing how violent that game was. No wonder I loved it so much when I was a kid.

Caco caves should have crucified barons, if only because I want to see how many people get the reference to the novels. =B

And I just remembered wall of faces. Maybe, when animated sprites will become real...

If bodies were added, they should be made un-resurrectable because I think it would get too tough if Archviles just resurrected them straight away.

Archviles aside, think about the overpoweredness of Skulls.

Hmmm... mini-mortuary?

I'd have the bodies only as a decoration. The skulls/arch-viles can be said not to work on corpses that are not fresh enough.

What about the mortuary then? Would all of those corpses be fresh, then? Or maybe the mortuary should be nerfed a bit and some of the corpses there would be old and rotten.
