Title: [4e] The Garden of Graves - IC
Post by: Malek Deneith on November 14, 2010, 07:18
"A small issue"
"It shouldn't be a problem to heroes of your caliber"
Oh it's always "small problem" and "easily solved" when people hire you, and they expect for you to take the cheapest pay. One does wonder why don't they solve them by themselves if they are so easy. The thing was, that with half of your small group near broke, you needed to take the job. The task itself was fairly straightforward, if not necessarily easy to finish - something was pillaging and burning small settlements near the city of Fallcrest. You were hired to track it down and kill it. What was it exactly was a less clear matter - of few survivors some claimed they saw a dragon, others talked about a pack of dog-like creatures. Whatever it was, the destruction it caused was rather easy to follow, and it seemed you might be near catching up with it soon.

"Heh.  Track and kill."

On the front of the group, clad in a loose, flowing robe of surprisingly unremarkable fawn colour, young genasi women marched. Her skin jet black was adorned with a meticulous chalk-white pattern stretching from her ankles (oddly she was shoeless- probably the first person you've seen walking like that that was not a halfling) through her entire body up to the cheeks, a tattoo probably, though it could have also been the natural body-mark of genasi race. Her elemental affliction was revealed by a small nimbus of smokeless reddish flames sprouting from her, head matched by eyes that looked more like a pair of cinders. More perceptive of you could also spot some very faint shimmer in the air around her, as if she was surrounded by some sort of mystical aura- though it should not come as a surprise, given that she was a spellsword.

'I just hope that this villager who talked about the dragon was delusional...' she said, admiring the destruction that lied in front of them.

As far as you remembered, her name was Kin, but she admitted that it was of a moniker, not her real name, which she deemed to be to embarrassing to reveal.

The half-elf with brown hair, and hazel eyes stopped strumming her lute and sat back "Well, it wouldn't be as surprising as some of the stories Father told me when I was younger." As she got up, she revealed that she was quite tall. Dressed in Finemail, and carrying around a very nice looking lute, This one was always ready for adventure. Always. Based on her parents, it should've come as no surprise.

You could all remember her name clearly, for her introduction was quite long: " I am Thersys Dawntracker Uthadar. Daughter of Pender Uthadar, Famous adventurer, and Janmorel Dawntracker, Priestess of Corellon. Half-Sister to the heirs of the Uthadar adventuring legacy, Norian and Aden Uthadar. Pleased to meet you."

A small giggle could be heard from the back of the group. Your eyes are met with the form of a thin woman. Wasn't she at the front of the group? Either way she was behind you now. Removing her hood, you could see something protruding from beneath her long black hair. Horns... a Tiefling. Her skin however lacked the hues most common in Tieflings, it was much more ashen and pale with an almost sickly quality to it. Her eyes lacked both pupils and irises; Her steely blue eyes giving off a faint ethereal glow.

Looking at her, the name Aile comes to mind. Yes, Aile K'traz, that is what she introduced herself as. A wandering Warlock who eagerly joined your band of miscreants on your adventures. She was short -only 5'1"- and had a thin frame, but was often one of the last to complain of tiredness from traveling.

"I've always wanted to see a dragon up close ...And watch it fall "
She sighed, keeping that last bit to herself.

'Trust me, you wouldn't' replied Kin, chuckling slightly, with a sound reminiscent of wood cracking in a fireplace. 'I've seen a dragon once, and if not for the fact that I am a cinder already, I would have became one. And there is nothing really impressive in those lizards anyway.'

Sorasha was silent. Sorasha was nearly always silent, at least around friends. Thin, and pale white (but in a healthy fashion, not a sickly one) most people would say she is too tall for a human female. Her blonde hair was too wild and yet straight. Her frame was too graceful and controlled. Those who were learned could spot the signs, but they usually were warned to keep their thoughts to themselves.

A silky voice spoke in your mind [Death comes to all things eventually. But not to our quarry while we stay here.]

Anyone hearing a voice in their mind should have no doubt that they were dealing with a Kalashtar, even if she did happen to be a Psion. But then again, quite a lot of people are susceptible to believing what a pretty woman tells them.

Kin turned towards the psion, frowning slightly. Even after all the time spent around her, she still felt a little bit uncomfortable in a presence of someone that could read thoughts at will.

'Please, I don't want to offend you but, communicate verbally if can... it is just kind of creepy to hear someone's else voice in you head, you know... Also' she added after a moment, as if to further justify her plea 'I have some innate psychic resistance and I can't quite hear you as clearly as you would probably want.'

Your banter gets cut bit abruptly, as the trail you were following turns and enters a glade. On it you see five monstrosities busy fighting for remains of... something that was their prey. The bests do have dog-like posture, which witnesses reported, but their heads are nothing like canines, and dogs obviously don't have a mass of spikes on their backs. And behind these creatures, joy of joys, Aile's wish come true - not one, but two dragons awaited you. Quite exotic ones to - it's hard to see as the creatures seem to be surrounded by unhealthy looking fumes, but what your eyes can spot looks like if it's made of... lava?

'Oh marvellous...' mumbled Kin, swearing angrily. Quickly, she calmed herself, and drew her blade, tip of it drawing a circle in air, that soon expanded to the entire party. All weapons in Kin's companions possession suddenly turned cold in touch.
'That should help, a bit at least...' she murmured, charging in the middle of the hellhounds, swinging her sword in a wide arc.

Kin's sword hit one of the beasts, but other managed to avoid it if barely. As she was recovering from her attack, one of the dragons quickly approached her. Once, twice, thrice his claws fell, each time finding their mark and finally the creature decided to take a bit at her. Kin found herself suddenly engulfed in flames after the bite - normally that wouldn't be a problem to the genasi, but something was wrong. The flames hurt, as if previous attacks managed to break through her natural resistance somehow.

The other dragon didn't seem to be concerned with the genasi - instead it moved closer to the rest of the group and started to expel lava in their general direction. It didn't seem to aim at anyone in particular, instead it was satisfied with burning and melting the ground and your feet.

The fumes around both dragons took up in intensity, some reached even Varis, who immediately started to cough.

Coughing, Varis notices that his stay in the fumes has made him slightly dizzy and weak. Despite this both his arrows find their mark. In the meantime the remaining hound-beasts finally spring into action: first one starts to shuffle towards Varis, while another gets closer to Kin and lets loose a piercing howl that shakes the Genasi and makes her drop her guard a little - though not enough for the last hound to land a hit.

A field of lava was no place for some expecting to live to stand. Hopping out of the zone, she made her way towards the center of conflict. Stopping just out of reach of the first dragon, gave the surrounding area a fierce glare. Nothing 'seemed' to change, but the air hung a little heavier. Turning to the dragon beside her, Aile focused on the ground beside it. A dark shadow slowly crept up the dragon restricting it's movements. All seemed well until the shadow tore with the dragon completely unfazed.

"Of course there's actually a dragon. Well, no time to waste, the quicker we kill the dragons the better. Of course, those dread hounds have to go too." Thersys quickly shouted:"Heroes of old! Grant Kin the strength to continue on despite her grieveious wounds! Lend her your vigor!" then get away from the lava as fast as she could, coughing a bit as she came closer to the Dragon and it's Dread Hound accomplice.

She decided use a special technique, that if used successfully, would guide her allies Strikes against the creature. That is assuming she hit. If she had hit it or not would be up for debate later.

The nimbus of flame on Kin's head flared as she lost control over her inner fire. Inhaling the noxious smoke and still reeling from the dragon's bite, she could feel it searing her from the inside, and she knew all too well that until the fight was over, she would not be able to regain control over it.

Instead, she stoked it, allowing the fire inside her to blaze freely, drawing strength she needed from it.

Her sword arced, leaving a fiery trail behind it, but she did not aim for the dragon. She hit the ground, making it bulge as spikes of her magic erupted from underneath the creature, piercing it's scales and immobilizing it. A glowing rune appeared on it's head, binding it further. Immediately, she turned towards the second lizard, lunging to it and striking again, hoping to distract it further from her companions.

Aile seemed to be the first victim of aura of misfortune she emanates as her spell fails to pose any threat to the dragon. Thersys didn't fare much better - her healing chant did renew Kin's strength, but attack that followed ended with bard getting her arm pierced by dread hound's spikes. Kin in the meantime was suffering from fire enveloping her, as well as the poisonous fumes of both dragons - despite this she managed to strike a decent blow against the creature in front of her before charging the other one. Her second attack was also a sucessfull one, but she didn't manage to avoid taking a bite from howler and previous dragon when she moved to engage her second target. At least her fire resistance seemed to slowly come back...

First dragon decided to outwait magical spikes summoned by Kin, and shaking off last effects of psion's attack stretched his clawed paw further and took a swipe at the nearest target - Thersys. First attack hit it's mark, even as Kin invoked another charm he set on the beast and teleported to it trying but failing to get another attack at it, but the other one missed widely and the dragon stumbled back. Hissing the creature spat a pool of lava under Sorasha's feet. In the meantime it's companion moved to engage Varis despite lingering effects of Kin's attack. It's first failed swipe sent the beast stumbling backwards, but with it's monstrous reach it managed to hit the elf with a second one. Not content with just that it tried another attack, but as it missed it's mark, Aile's hex caused the creature to stumble back once again, this time too far away to attack anyone.

Sorasha's mental attack hit it's targets... with the exception of the very hound she set into attack's area. In the meantime Varis was busy sending more arrows towards the dragon - both of them hit, one even reached a spot not covered by protective scales, but the creature didn't seem to be too bothered about it yet.

Dread Hound that got moved moments ago by Sorasha snapped his teeth at Kin - genasi narrowly avoided them, only to feel the bite of the other one, who sneaked behind her grab her by one of the arms and yank, sending her stumbling towards the dragon.

Aile's hand was clasped over her mouth to stifle her laughter. Both Dragons nearly fell, a shame they only stumbled but it was a silly sight to see nonetheless. Giving the Dragon the right a callous glance she uttered a long line of profanity at it, insulting everything from it's mother to it's toenail clipping - if it had any. Moving a little closer to the fray she turned, raising her hand towards the dragon. Shadows crept along her body, but her hand instead sparkled for a moment before the sky above the dragon suddenly erupted into a blinding radiance. The creature let out a terrible roar as the light seared it's body.

The radiance summoned by Aile wounded the dragon greatly, but the creature still looked strong. Others had less luck - Thersys' attack missed altogether, while Kin's sword dealt only superficial damage to one of the dragon's legs. Retaliation came from where you least expected it - noxious fumes that surrounded both dragons suddenly got ignited, and most only Thersys and Varis managed to evade the fiery inferno completely. Both beasts were eager to add more damage to that dealt by flames - one took a swipe at Thersys, taking a powerfull hit from Kin due to this, while the other made his way to Aile and took a bite at the warlock despite radiance still searing his body.

Drawing back her hand from the Dread Hound's bite, Aile quickly decided to retreat. Small bits of her body and clothes started to fall away, dissolving into a green gel until that was all that remained. The green slime oozed around the dragon's feet, moving counter-clockwise smothering both Dread Hounds before moving though the other dragon. Reconstituting from the slime, Aile returned. Physically her wounds looked to be gone but her hard breathing indicated otherwise. Swearing an oath of ill luck on the left dragon, she stepped back out of range.

Thersys, feeling the pain, has to weigh her options carefully. She's out of songs to heal her comrades with...but there was something else. Something she learned from Aden a few years ago. The ability to give a rousing command like a Warlord. She wasn't as good at it as he was, but she knew that it would be useful some day...and useful it was. " OK, now then....clear throat, stand tall, think of Valorous thoughts...erm...ah yes, and stare at the subject, and look them in the eye for maximum effect! Right then. Let me move around here for some breathing room...

and then with her clear voice, she gave Aile some encouragement. "I know it hurts, but if you don't shake it off right now, we're never going to get to kill a REAL dragon, and I know how much you want to do that. Focus on something other than the pain, and let's take these dragons out."

Thersys then decided it was high time for her to try and actually hit something. She looked at the dread hound next to her, and decided to have another swing, this time with something a little more...powerful. However, Aile killed it already, and so had to settle for hitting the dragon. Thersys connected, thus making the dragon roar with pain. This allowed her to sing a minor hymn of victory, thus boosting Aile and Kin with a small bit of power.

Fully enveloped in her fiery aura, Kin ran alongside the dragon's side, positioning herself a little better before briefly incantation some sort of spell. Air shimmered, as the runes of her aegis were placed upon the other dragon's head. Wasting not even a moment, the gensai stabbed the dragon, briefly covering her sword with sheen of frost. The wound immediately erupted with vapour, as the ice extending from her blade was melted by lava dragon's heat.

As Aile reconstituted herself from slime form she was pleased to hear last dying howls of the doglike beasts that were aiding the dragons. The beasts themselves, while not yet dead, looked worse for wear also - after Thersys and Kin added her blows, the dragon nearest to most of the party finally started to look worried by the damage he was taking. This didn't make it less ferocious though: it took a bite at the bard, despite numbing cold from Kin's attack and moments later it tried to, but failed to take care of the pesky genasi herself. It even found a moment to send a new dose of lava, straight at where Sorasha was standing. The other one also created a new lava pool, centered at Aile's location, before making a lumbering charge at Varis.

"I agree. However, some of us need a small breather." Thersys said, looking pretty beat up after that heavy battle. "I suppose it can wait though. We have to get something out of this, even something minor...and, uh, what about that lava? it doesn't look like it's going anywhere, but still, that's pretty dangerous in a forest."

Thersys dusted herself off a bit and started to help Varis look for any loot they could find on the monsters. "We might want to check around, maybe their treasure hordes are nearby...well, not right now. if we run into more monsters right now, we're going to be eaten alive."

Thankfully for Thersys, after the dragons died the lava cooled off pretty quickly - apparently at least a bit of magic was involved in the process that allowed dragons to spit it out. On the other hand, the loot was pretty disappointing... or to be precise there was none - if the dragons had any hoard, they didn't bother to carry it with them, and who knew where their lair was.

Suddenly, your thoughts relating to the battle are interrupted by slow but loud clapping. "Splendid, truly splendid battle. Could use a bit less blood being spilled on your side, but splendid none the less," the speaker, a raven haired eladrin who appeared literally out of nowhere, stopped his clapping for a moment to rise his hands and show that they were empty.
"Ah, but excuse my rudeness. My name is Paelias, and I'd wish to take a moment of your time... heroes."

We called it the Garden of Graves." - the fey paused for a moment - "It was a sacred and quiet place for a long time, but recently we were faced with a sudden invasion. A powerfull undead led his minions against Quiet Hall with intent of taking the Garden and many of us were killed. Some of our kin, capricious as they are sided with the invaders, and rest of us were forced to cede control of the site just to stay alive. The undead then desacrated the site - they used cairns holding remains our dead to build structures of some sort and etched magical runes on their walls. I can't be sure of their purpose but I know for sure they're corrupting their surroundings. Each day more and more feywild around the ste gets warped, and at the same time some of those that survived got driven mad and are roming the area hunting dead and living alike. I'm afraid this corruption will continue to spread, and itn time it might even reach your world. We can't stand up to the undead anymore I'm afraid. Someone from outside needs to free the site and destroy the source of evil inside, and you are the only ones I can ask for help."

"Undead that you have trouble handling?" Varis said, gazing strongly at the Eldarin.

"Is there more that you need to tell us?"  He paused for a moment before continuing, "We need to claim the bounty for this first too, if you don't mind."

[I seriously doubt we're the ONLY people he could ask, but we certainly are the closest, and...] "A job is a job, saving the world is just a perk, right? You have my interest."
