Title: Gaslamp RTD - Episode I: The Secret Ingredient
Post by: S.K. Ren on August 09, 2011, 01:06
The Secret Ingredient

You have long since passed the point of remembering how you got in the cell. You all have. Numerous cells lined the dark stone hallway; small candles providing barely enough light to see the grate to the cell. Every week, as far as you can tell, a well-dressed man colloquially called the Keeper and his guards come and take some of the other inmates away; soon after they bring in a new batch. And for days all you can hear is endless screaming followed by dead silence broken only by the faint drip of water from down the hall. Strangely you and several others have managed to dodge this fate for weeks now. You suppose this is thanks to the warnings on what is safe to eat when they bring food. No one knows where this knowledge came from but it’s kept you alive for now. Though not everyone gets or follows this advice. Anyone not deemed strong enough or useful was left to the Keeper each week.

While the screaming was certainly disquieting to anyone new, for the senior residents is was a chance to talk without being interrupted by guards.  During your third week the screaming was broken briefly by a muffled cry of surprise from one of the cells further down the hall.

“Marcus? You get another message from our friend down the hall?” One of the men cried softly. A small voice called back after a few moments.

“W-we’re g-g-g-go-ing t-t-tonight…. Tonight!” Marcus stuttered back. A low murmur of excitement flowed through the hall, cut short by the entrance of the guards. THe noise had been just loud enough to grab the guard's attention. Quickly two men started bickering, drawing the guard’s attention. That was their job. The guard wearily made his way over, used to the routine by now.

With the guard taken care of you are left to prepare for tonight’s break. You don’t know much about your mysterious benefactor but whoever he or she is, they’re your only chance out of this hole. You can hear small scraping sounds from the surrounding cells as they dig out their contraband. What have you stored away?

I have a question. Do we pick any starting equipment?

It'll be random. You'll need to search your surroundings/stash and see what the dice give you. Ill base whatever you find around your skill. And besides even if you get a botched roll you still have your fists and can loot the guards. As you find stuff Ill make an armory spoiler on the first page. Ill also be keeping a character sheet summary at the bottom of each round's report and use the abbr tag to give a short description.

"Finally, I'm sick of this place as it is," Twizmer thought to himself as he snuck deeper into the darkness of his cell, looking for his stash.  In another life Twizmer was one of those dandies: immaculate, dapper, with a wit to match.  But that was a long, long time ago, and he has long since given up trying his wit on the boring guards who did not even bother to pay him any attention.  It was a good thing, really, for those whom the guards engaged, they inadvertently ended up... elsewhere.

Skill: Basic fighting with a walking stick
Action: Searching for stash

"Good thing this isn't my first prison break."

Mr. Fletch had spent a fair deal of time in the clink. He'd never had an 'honest' job in is his, preferring shady jobs ranging from cat burglar to hired muscle. He had been beaten by the guards on more than one occasion, not unprovoked beatings mind you, he liked to pass the time by grabbing passing guards and getting in what lumps he could. While typically clear headed, he couldn't remember for the life of him what he had stashed away while he dug out his possessions.

Skill: Modest hand to hand and a propensity for stealth
Action: Searching for stash

"If I had to guess, I'd say that's 145 beats per minute. I suppose this old ticker's as ready for escape as it's gonna be." thought Dr. Bonhomme as he took his pulse like he always did at the end of his daily jog-in-place. In all his life, the good doc had only been dedicated to one thing more than fighting his own death, and that was fighting the death of others. "Don't any of you think about dying on me! We're all getting out of this in one piece! Even Fletch over there doesn't deserve this!" shouted Bonhomme to his companions as he dug through the pile of rags where he hid his things.

Skill: Decade of experience as a doctor of medicine and a lifetime of rigorous cardio
Action: Searching for stash and giving motivational speech

The Secret Ingredient - Round I, Out with a bang

The whole hallway quickly hushed Dr. Bonhomme as the guards reentered. While the effort was appreciated now was not to time to draw attention. The hours seemed to drag on as feeding hour approached. Twizmer pulled a short length of pipe from behind a loose stone (10). It appeared a previous resident of the cell had placed it there but was taken away before it could be put to use. Mr. Fletch on the other hand had shown much ingenuity in his acquisition of contraband (16). The guards paid little attention to the collected tinware from the mealtime, so a few missing handles from cups or torn edges on plates went unnoticed. With pure strength he had managed to fashion a set of serrated knuckles and a crude lock pick. Dr. Bonhomme meanwhile had managed to have been gifted with a makeshift scalpel (11). While not exactly suited for combat, it could be used in a pinch and is an essential piece in a doctor's repertoire. You also managed to collect bandages from the least dirty clothes the others were willing to sacrifice. The other inmates had likewise achieved varying levels of success in collecting weapons.

A silence unlike any other permeated the hallways as the guards entered to feed the prisoners. As they moved nearer the back, each prisoner braced for whatever their mysterious friend had planned. For a moment all that could be heard was the clank of the heavy door moving. A minute passed when suddenly a raucous explosion sounded from the end of the hall. Everyone backed away from their bars as the form of one of the guards could be seen flying past, riding the front of an iron door. As the ringing subsided, you could make out steps echoing in the hall. From the dust a figure emerged, 6' in height with broad shoulders; clearly male. He had several mechanisms attached to his body, some resembling former restraining devices and others clearly contraptions of his own design. His hands were emitting a small stream of gas. As he passed each cell he pressed his hands to the lock. After a few seconds he snapped his fingers and the lock abruptly exploded, opening the cell.

You step out of the cell for this first time. After calming your excitement you see your savior about to leave. He pauses a moment, and turns to your group. "I realize you may have many questions, but I implore you to leave as quickly as possible. I have business below and will not stand for this place to remain intact longer than need be." With that he disappeared through the doorway.

Ok, you don't need to restate your action after the post. Also you don't need to italicize talking. Its a a free action 99% of the time and just looks silly. If you want to restate you action after the post that fine and we can abandon the italicze/bolding the main post thing. But we need to pick one and stick with it.

"Bloody hell, I wasn't expecting that!" Mr. Fletch cried as surveyed his surroundings. He briefly thought of making a break for the door before thinking the guard might have nice little keyring that would make their escape more than a tad easier. And with that, he jogged down the hall to the where the poor sod landed.

Action: Searching the guard's belt and pockets for keys and other useful items

"Who knows how long we'll be on the run? Better grab some of this grub while we're here and Lord knows what you could do with more tinware." Dr. Bonhomme bluntly stated as he hunted down the door's other victims.

Action: Scavenging tinware and what ever food was still intact, portable and most of all, safe.

"Well that's a strange fellow indeed," Twizmer thought to himself as he saw the others scavenging the remains of the recently deceased.  "Food's probably a good idea."

Action: Scavenging for food and other useful utilities from the bodies.

The Secret Ingredient - Round II, Cherry pickin'

With a deft hand, Mr. Fletch quickly located a small keyring with three keys(14). One likely belonged to door on top of the guard, and another to the door leading out. Also in the pocket was a small pouch of coins. Quickly stowing them he looked out the door. Just outside the doorway you could make out a large stone spiral staircase. The uniform for the guard was bloody, but mostly intact if you wanted it. Back down the hall Dr. Bonhomme and Twizmer both scavenged as much of the 'safe' food as they could, though there wasn't much aside form the portions they had been given initially (8)(9). There were however plenty of Tinware cups. Dr. Bonhomme managed to string up seven of them on one of the bandages to bring along. The other inmates had long since stripped the other guards of their clothes, though Twizmer was able to land himself a Night Stick.

As you prepare for your exodus a low tremor shakes the hall. It seems that your friend has started something below. Let us just hope he will suffer this place to stand long enough for you to escape.

"Ha! You even took the shirt off his back!" Dr. Bonhomme joked as he rejoined Mr. Fletch by the door. "Hey Twizmer, you fancy yourself an actor? The outfit doesn't look too good but there's plenty of natural rouge here to match the costume. Even if they don't buy it, all you need is a distraction." Dr. Bonhomme stated as he removed one of the tinware cups from the string, a grin spreading across his face as he admired his plot.

Action: Preparing a tinware cup to throw and waiting for the rest of the group to act.

The Secret Ingredient - Round III, A Light in the darkness

The uniform was a little loose but fit convincingly enough. As Twizmer dolled himself up, Dr. Bonhomme seemed to be loosing it a little. First the shouting, then then the clownish smile; It made the other escapees wary of him. Another tremor shook the hall, slightly more powerful than the last. Whatever was happening down below was either moving closer or getting more dangerous.

Scouting upstairs, Mr. Fletch proceeded with caution. The stairwell was just as dark as the hallway was, with only a dim candle every so often. After what felt like several stories, it became noticeable brighter. The staircase leveled off at the floor in the middle of a large open room. Several downward staircases could be seen to the left and right. There is a double doorway on the far side of the room.

"Indeed," Twizmer said as he strutted along to join Mr Fletch, just like how a guard might do so, though he was careful to appear a little wounded, which was a funny thing, this whole strutting-while-looking-wounded bit.  But that's just part of the act, is it not?

The Secret Ingredient - Round IV, Blinded by the light

Raising himself up carefully, Mr. Fletch made his way along one of the walls. Various tables and desks line the edges of the room. Many of the tables seem to have been meant for restraining someone or something. The door was still a ways off though not so far as to notice the bright light cracking beneath the door. While the current lighting was immensely better than in the cell, it was still very dark by normal standards.

Suddenly the double door bursts open, blinding Mr. Fletch as a squad of guards marches through. You hear the commander yell "Split up! Shaft Two has been blocked so proceed down Shafts One, Three, Four and Five. Mr.Fletch quickly flattened himself against the floor, wriggling under the nearest table (11). Twizmer and Dr. Bonhomme having just reached the top of the stairs, managed to duck down without being seen (12)(9). Moments passed as the two waited for the guards to come. Luckily they were in Shaft Two. The double door, now closed again, served as the meeting point of the three.

"Run softer!"  Twizmer said as he followed Mr Fletch to the double-door doorway.  No more need for the pretense of injury just yet.

"If someone comes through, pretend to be hitting me so that they will come in to 'assist' me.  Then, we take'em out together."

Action: Following Mr Fletch to the doorway.

The Secret Ingredient - Round V, Crisis Management

Pushing open the door, you are once again blinded by the light inside, It takes a few moments for your eyes to adjust. Mr.Fletch turns to lock the door only to find it has no lock. It seems the doors are automatically shut once released due to a mechanism near the top of the door. With the heightened light levels you see the room in all its grisly glory. The room is divided by a wide walkway with a door at the end and four workstations to either side. At each one is a large table with straps and several smaller tables with various implements. You observations are cut short by the sound of footsteps approaching the room.

Your tension eases a little as a group of escapees enters form behind. "Is this the way out?" calls one of the men. They exchange nervous glances as they begin to observe the room. "The name's Bob by the way..." the man began introducing himself before being interrupted by another group of footsteps sounds behind you, raising your alarm. Several guards pour in from the other door, several carrying rifles. Remembering Twizmer's words, Mr. Fletch punched Twizmer on reflex (13). The punch knocked Twizmer off balance for a moment. There would be no need to 'feign' an injury now.

"Freeze! Return to your cells!" Calls one of the guards.

"Damnit I told you to just pretend to hit me..."  Twizmer muttered to himself as he tried to regain his balance somewhat, with the attempt of faking that he was about to fall, waiting for the moment to strike with his Night Stick.

Needing to free his hands, Dr. Bonhomme finally threw away the piece of tinware he'd been saving for a distraction, aiming for one of the guards before turning to Twizmer. "You! The Secret Ingredient - Round VI, Retribution

The cup sailed through the air, hitting one of the guards squarely in the face. What little tension there was in the air snapped. Several of the guards ran up to meet the escapees, clubs drawn while two remained in the back aiming their rifles into the crowd. Likewise the escapees rose to the challenge, several of them grabbing objects off the tables to use as improvised weapons. Unfortunately these guards were no push overs, their clubs dealing sold blows to the others (9)(13)(11)(10). Though it was not without retort as one of the guards found his arm had become a pincushion for sharp implements. The guards in the back seemed to unerringly hit the escapees through their comrades, inflicting wounds on Dr. Bonhomme and another escapee (9)(11). All the commotion seemed to avoid Twizmer and Mr.Fletch for the moment, leaving them free to move.

The Secret Ingredient - Round VII, Wrecking Ball

With little effort, Mr. Fletch flung Twismer into the body of one of the guards, sending them both into a heap (8). Amidst the chaos, Mr Fletch approached to deal what would hopefully be a finishing blow (10). Another took a sharp step back as Dr. Bonhomme attempted to make an aggressive incision (8). Although he missed, it was all the opportunity Bob Grey needed to grab him in a rather tight bear hug (10). He wouldn't be going anywhere soon.

The guards in the back once again took aim, but missed horribly. With two of their allies immobilized the remaining guards doubled their efforts dealing out heavy blows to the escapees (16)(13). At the same time those fighting the now in disposed guards got in a few free hits of their own (11)(12). The resulting blows finished off the guard on the floor.

These riflemen were quickly becoming unignorable. Mr. Fletch found a guard who was busy fighting another inmate, ahem, former inmate, and grabbed the back of his uniform at the shoulders. Whipping him around to block incoming fire, he charged towards the riflemen using the captured guard as a battering ram and shield.

Action: Making an ultimatum and preparing to execute the guard at the first sign of resistance or non-compliance.
(9) One of the guards immediately turns to shoot you at this outburst, but misses terribly (5). The other strikes one of the escapees in the chest (13). You immediately ram the scalpel into the guard's throat, evoking a soft gurgle.

Action: Attack the guard with night stick.
(8) With nothing else to do, you turn to the nearest guard and start wailing on him. Your aim is a little off, but your attacks have rattled him. Turning to strike you, he strikes you in the ribs (12). You think you may have heard a small crack.

Action: Put the guard in a chokehold to kill him. If possible, break his neck.
(5) You loosen your grip on the guard to finish him off only to have deliver a sharp elbow into your gut (12). He stumbles forward a few steps before slumping to the ground.

Action: Grabbing a guard and charging at a rifleman.
(3) You grab the guard's collar only to have him brush you off immediately. Two other inmates also attempt to grapple him but he shrugs them off just the same (6)(4). Though despite not being able to grab him, he too seems unable to hit any of you (5).

"Ugh..." Bonhomme moaned in pain as he retaliated.

Action: Attacking with nightstick.

(Could you start giving nameless NPCs a letter designation so we can differentiate who is attacking whom and who is armed with a given weapon, injured, etc? Some basic MSPaint battle maps would also be nice, if it's not too much trouble.)

The Secret Ingredient - Round X
((OK, post'd. Also Ill start attaching MSpaint maps from now on for logistics.))

Action: Attacking with nightstick.
(9)You quickly rap the guard across the face with the nightstick. His head jerks from the blow but quickly recovers. He swings the butt of his gun in a violent arc, smashing Dr. Bonhomme in the ribs and Bob Grey in the calf (15).

Action: Attack guard with nightstick.
(4) You attempt to finish the fight but several weeks of malnutrition have finally caught up as a brief wave of exhaustion washes over you. Your balance gives and your misstep causes you to swing wide. The Guard takes advantage of this an delivers a hefty blow to Twismer's left arm(15).

Action: Attempt to disarm one of the riflemen.
(14)You grab the barrel of the rifle and deliver a swift kick to the guards chest. He releases the gun then drops to the floor.

Action: Tackling the nearest guard so he can join his allies on the floor.
(16)Turning around you see the escapees have yet to take down the guard you left behind. You put your whole body into a shoulder tackle that sends the guard flying onto a nearby table. The two escapees proceed to jam several sharp implements from nearby tables into the guard(8)(9). The guard twitches and groans before lying still (5).

The remaining two escapees continue to stomp on the two prone guards(8)(9). Your group immediately turns to the last guard standing off with Twismer.

((Here is the rolls for this round http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3209322/ . Guards 1 (Right) and 3 (Left) are the ones in the back with the rifles. Guard 4 is the one fighting with the inmates and Guard 2 is fighting with Twismer. No, I didn't just pull this out of my ass,  but I admit I should make this available if you have questions. Though I must say its quite an impressive last stand for the guards. @thelaptop: If you want to finish the fight mano a mano, then I'll have combat last go more round. If not, just post your actions as if you have already beaten him and I'll wrap it up in the next report.))

"I don't know what came over me. Just too much stress to handle." The doctor regretfully admitted as he recovered from his outburst. "I don't suppose disguises'll do us any good now. You think these uniforms are thick enough to protect us, or should we tear off some pieces for tourniquets?" Bonhomme pondered outloud as he got out some bandages. "Who needs me to patch'em up?"

Action: Performing First Aid on whoever wants it.

Edit: Whoops, I assumed we were all done fighting.

Mr. Fletch surveyed the room. The guards were being looted, the doctor was doctoring, and Twismer was turning a guard into a fine paste. He looked for the nearest body that wasn't being looted or beaten, and after a quick search for anything useful, took the shirt off the body. He tore off one sleeve and stuffed it in his pocket. He tore off the other sleeve to tie together the doorhandles of the door ahead once they passed through.

Action: Searching a guard for something useful, and taking his shirt for other purposes.

(Sorry for the holdups guys, I keep getting distracted by shiny objects.)

The Secret Ingredient - Round XII

Twismer vented his frustration on the body of the nearby guard. After a few moments, his rage subsided. Meanwhile Dr. Bonhomme did his best to heal people injuries with what little supplies he had(13). With Twismer recuperating off to the sides, Mr. Fletch began stripping the guard of his uniform and valuables(14), finding a small brass lighter.

The brief scavenging was interrupted by another rumble from below while two more escapees entered from the rear of the room.
"What are you lot all standing around for?! That crazy bastard is bringing the whole place down" Yelled one of the men. The other man, who had a guard's jacket draped over his head, remained silent; his legs seemingly unsteady.

"Is your friend okay? You need some help?" Bonhomme asked as he scooped up a pair of night sticks and handed them to his new comrades before fastening one to his waist. Noticing the forgotten gun on the ground, he checked the late owner's pockets for ammo and picked up the gun, holding it out to the others. "Who wants this?"

Action: Equipment distribution and searching pockets.

The Secret Ingredient - Turn XIII

Action: Equipment distribution and searching pockets.
Action: Take gun from Bonhomme, search around for useful things.

You hand the gun off to Twismer and turn back to the apparently injured man. He cringes, holding the jacket tightly over his face. You can hear him mumbling to himself.
"It's nothing," the other man interjected, "only an old wound he wishes to keep hidden."

Action: Search around for useful objects and search pockets.

You quickly look around for anything of use before you leave. You find several small vials of a clear liquid around the room, but as to its use you have no clue.
Spoiler: Loot (click to show/hide)

Your short rest is interrupted by another tremor, significantly larger than before. A quick peek into the dark room with the stairwells reveals that several section of floor have collapsed, leaving only dark pits.
"See! I told you!" The two men quickly shuffle towards the opposite door. Mr. Fletch opens the door for the men and grimaces at the sight beyond. The door opens atop a short staircase leading down into an enormous room. At the opposite end is an enormous staircase leading up out of sight. Arranged around the room are several large grates and a few doors to the left and right. However this was not the source of Mr. Fletch's grimace. In the middle of the room several guards could be seen trying to restrain an enormous creature. The struggle seems to be slowly going in the creatures favor.

"Should we sneak past this?"

Bob Grey clutches his rifle "What in god's name is that thing". He then responds to Twizmer "I think sneaking is preferable. It's better than running up to it and being evicerated"

"Predators usually attack those who are weak and separated from the group. If we stay in one big group and run to the door, it might keep attacking the guards instead of going after us."

"Okay once Mr Fletch is done we run towards the stairs -- there doesn't seem to be cover for sneaking.  Don't stop, don't look back, don't make any more noise than necessary.  Run behind the guards if you can so that we have something between us and that... thing."  Twizmer whispered, his face a mild sign of disgust when he mentioned the monster.

Action: Waiting for Mr Fletch to tie the doors shut behind us before running with the group.

Action: Limbering up, waiting for the group to go.

The Secret Ingredient - Turn XIV

Quote from: Group
Action: Run for your life!
Having reached a consensus, you break into a mad dash across the floor. Mr. Fletch(10) and Bob Grey(11) keep a up a good pace as they cross the room, however Twizmer(8) and Dr. Bonhomme(3) lag behind, still sore from their injuries. Dr. Bonhomme grasps his sides in pain after only a few steps, his ribs granting him a sharp retort to his heavy exertion.

The rest of the escapees take a detour along the opposite edge of the room, none of them courageous enough to run straight for the stairs. The battle with the creature is visibly deteriorating.  Those in the way duck, as one of the guards gets backhanded across the room. It pauses a moment, taking an interest in the group circumventing the center of the room, before remembering there were four more annoying guards nearby.
