Modding / Re: Angel of Patience (0.9.9.1)
« on: April 24, 2010, 14:26 »
Hopefully, the last re-release of the level (v1.2.3). Fixed some messages and removed Angel of Death from the game, since he's not going to spawn anyway and force-spawning him is just evil.

- The stick exists for the sole reason of preventing you from putting a powerful melee weapon in the prepared slot and then using Juggler to attack with it. You thought you were clever? You keep thinking that. ;)
- The Computer Map spawning is add's responsibility. He wrote the Infinite Arena on which the mod is based.

All in all, i really enjoy "watching" you play, GH. You're really something. Good luck!

EDIT: Updated the file again, upping the damage of both the gun and stick to 1d3 (same as fists) and slowing health regeneration as compensation. You are no longer virtually immortal while berserking. Patience is, once again, a virtue.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I seem to have forgotten about this possibility. The pistol and stick are not supposed to be moddable after all.
I've updated the file with the new version.

Bug Reports / Re: Armor durability 255%

We don't "need" more than 255% durability. We need the POSSIBILITY of having more than 255% durability.

Modding / [Module] Angel of Patience
« on: April 21, 2010, 16:14 »
Remember how i said i would win an Angel of Patience challenge if there was one?

I didn't mean it. Now i know for sure that i didn't mean it.

I know it because i made this challenge just to try it out.

This map (which was originally built on the Infinite Arena codebase) has absolutely nothing new or exceptional about it.

With the sole exception that it's THE most unfair, cruel, sadistic and unforgiving challenge map EVER.

The rules are simple. You start in the center of the arena with a cursed pistol that does a pitiful 1d3 damage and has infinite ammo, a cursed sharp stick (1d3 as well, what did you think?) in the prepared slot, your life slowly regenerates and you need to survive 25 arena rounds.

Even attempting this "challenge" is an act of heroism.

Should you win (HA!), you can put this achievement on a T-shirt and demand eternal worship.

Due to a somewhat apparent demand, below is the Ladder of the last attempters of this challenge. To qualify, you simply need to play the latest version and report your progress.
For your convenience, the mortem now prints the wave you died on.

It's kind of hard.

« on: April 21, 2010, 01:37 »
A tip to beat Metal Gear: its rocket attack pattern is very similar to that of the Cyberdemon, and collecting all the stuff from all the enemies and from behind the fake walls should be enough for anyone most players. Oh, and the stinger has a second fire mode, de/activated with alt-reload.

Critical Error: <TINI> Key without section in "metalgear/sound.ini"!

Putting the #include in the end of the .ini should work, AFAIK.

Modding / Metal Gear RL (0.9.9.1)
« on: April 19, 2010, 10:45 »
Current version is 1.1.2.
Everything you need to know is in the README file supplied with the mod.

Additional notes:

The mod uses copyrighted material (mostly sounds) without any sort of permission. If you believe this to be icky, DO NOT play this mod.

The mod is considered 'finished'. Some features are disabled (or missing, due to either engine limitations or lack of programming skills on my part), but it's fully playable, moderately fun and even slightly challenging in some edge cases (see README file).

Now if you excuse me, i'm going to crawl back under my rock.

EDIT: Updated the file with a new version. For the changelog, see the README above or in the archive.
EDIT2: The file now conforms with my mod packaging standard (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,3067.0.html)
EDIT3: Small fixes.
EDIT4: More small fixes.

Discussion / Smart Mortem Namer Script (For Linux)
« on: March 18, 2010, 17:03 »
Linux users rejoice!
Due to not having the patience to convince Kornel and Co. that mortem file names should be more descriptive (see: http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,2898.html), i used my expertise (an overstatement) to craft a shell script to do just that: make the mortem file names more descriptive.

All interested parties may download and (ab)use it as they please.

Newbie note: make the file executable, then run it in the terminal. Oh, and read the notes.

Summary:
Code: [Select]
# This script renames raw DoomRL mortem files according to the following
# (by far more useful) naming scheme:
# Year-Month-Day Hour-Minute-Second Difficulty-GameType-Result PlayerName.txt
# Example: '2009-12-04 19-44-07 N-AoMr-St Simon.txt'
# The script will first match the files by name, then inspect their contents
# to verify and fill the missing information.
# The script is slow and unoptimized, but otherwise works.
# To use, either run this script from your mortem directory, or run it
# with the path to your mortem directory as the first argument

The script has been updated for DoomRL 0.9.9.3, which includes a different date format by default.

Additional notes:
In an attempt to avoid ambiguity as much as possible, which is necessary for my other script, doomrl-stats (a script that counts your games/wins for different play modes), i have taken the liberty to mark Angel of Haste as AoHa and Angel of Purity as AoPu. You may either accept it or change it to whatever you believe is appropriate.

Constructive criticism and ruthless bashing (pun intended) are welcome. ;)

 1 of those was killed.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 1 souls claim to have killed him...
1 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The bastard that is the Cyberdemon got a double attack when i didn't expect it.
I'm still going to knife him, even if it takes me another ten or twenty lives.

EDIT: Done.

P.S.: Apparently, melee weapons are better bulk modded instead of power modded (3d5 vs. 2d6). So yeah.

191
And this is NOT a bug, this is a feature request.

It was originally thought as "a bug" in that "it makes something broken or unusable", but apparently has grown past the original concept. My apologies. May the moderators move it as they see appropriate.

I will settle on the option to define the format and level of descriptiveness in the .ini file. This may actually be the better way to solve this (although it might be non-obvious to implement).

EDIT: In the mean time, i slapped together a Linux shell script to do just that. Link: http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,2904.0.html

0.9.9.1 / Re: [E|92%|15|YASSSSSD] Knives and fists
« on: March 18, 2010, 03:18 »
I've corrected my statement - "never died with ten med-packs and three red armors in my inventory to something completely avoidable before".

With all said, this death was really, completely, uncompromisingly unnecessary. I could have saved myself three to seven times over. That's why i'm upset.

I can't can, but want not wait for the Linux version.

193
Currently the mortems are copied to the mortem directory and named according to the following format:

Code: [Select]
[DD-MM-YYYY H-M-S] NAME.txt
It is my belief that the naming format should be more descriptive and useful, including the following modifications:
  • Follow the YYYY-MM-DD date format
  • Always use two-digit 24h time
  • Include the difficulty
  • Include the game type (normal or challenge)
  • Include the game outcome (level reached (two digits) or victory type)
The proposed changes will make the mortem archive searcheable, sortable and generally more convenient.

Examples:

Code: [Select]
2010-03-17 22-34-17 E-Normal-St1 Simon.txt
2010-05-07 02-41-05 N-Normal-15 Simon.txt
2010-07-13 12-03-24 H-AoMr-Pt1 YourName.txt
2010-11-20 14-50-22 U-Ao100-02 HisName.txt
2010-12-31 23-59-59 N!-AoPc-Pt1 SomeName.txt

I'm frustrated, can you tell?

As you can see, i was playing a fairly standard "knives and fists" game on Easy. As you can also see, i was doing rather well. The problem was i was running the Windows version through wineconsole, as a result receiving overly sharp colors, hard-to-read fonts and, which is worse, bright shadows (seriously, the shadows were brighter than the lit areas!). By the time i reached level 15 i got tired and stopped paying attention.

I can tell exactly what went through my head at that time.
"Right. I'll take them one by one, then go back and heal. (tap)(tap)(tap)(tap) All right, just one more cacodemon left, (move)(move) Ah, here he is. I don't need to heal yet, i can still make an attack or two... (tap-tap) Wait, no, SHIT! Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid!"

I never died with ten medpacks and three red armors in my inventory to something completely avoidable before. I can only hope it will not happen again.

I'm a stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid optimist.

Mournblade
Unique

Inventory description: The black blade hums slightly, demanding blood.
Base damage: 4d5
Base attack speed: 1s
Special: When wielded, the blade grants you the same benefits as the Vapmyre master trait (similar to how the Butcher's Cleaver does for Blademaster). However, as long as you are in melee range from an enemy, any move action you attempt is replaced with a melee attack action towards the nearest enemy, preventing you from running away and forcing you to continue fighting regardless of your judgment. Phase devices still work normally.
