If you were having ammo problems, then I would recommend against using storm bolter anyway. As soon as you would reach SoG4, you would deal 12 damage with each bullet, which is the knockback threshold. The first bullet could then easily push your target out of line of the second bullet, and your ammo problems would only get worse.
Yeah, that was one of the reasons why I didn't do it. I've used shotguns long enough to understand how the mechanics for double shot weapons work lol. It's why I prefer an Elephant Gun to a double shotty in most cases

Thanks for the encouragement, folks. It's appreciated. Kinda on a Dragon Quest kick at the moment but it won't be much longer til I'm ready to be eaten alive by Ao100 some more so expect to see a Ao100 YASD post mortem lmao

Seems that RNG was not exactly generous to you, with only a standard pistol and two P-mods. It only shows how powerful Sharpshooters are, once they start rolling. Good job!

Eh, without clearing the Vaults (which I passed on due to not having the Arena Master's staff and trying to keep a 100% kill rate) I feel like the odds of getting a good special pistol in a standard run are super small. Said it before but it bears repeating, pistols are the only non-guaranteed exotic drop. Every other weapon category gets a guaranteed exotic drop at some point but for pistols you either get lucky or mod out a basic pistol. We could REALLY use a guaranteed Combat Pistol in Deimos Labs.

 I actually built a HP pistol and replaced it with the one I finished the game with due to 2P2B having more than double the ammo per clip. Could have built a Storm Bolter at one point too (might have actually built it to get the assembly for the first time) but for a while I was bumping into ammo issues and felt like this was a better weapon. Overall, I'm not complaining. MSs plus SOG 4 was a ton of damage.

If anyone is wondering, this is still live. Been moving into a new apartment so I've not had much time to play.

Brief update is that finally got my MSs HMP run finished! Mortem to follow.  It was frickin' hard but I managed it and even got YAAM in the process. MSs runs have been challenging but probably the most fun I've had so far. I had actually been playing on UV for the increased XP, but I needed a YAAM HMP run for badges and ran with it.

That's the other thing, been trying to knock out badges to increase my ranking. I'm making good progress. I'm up to First Lietenant and Hell Knight ranks. Getting some melee Mancubus kills was actually super frustrating but I finally managed it on a run where I just outright made a Piercing Chainsaw. Hilariously, once I got Mancubus rank I also immediately got Hell Knight rank where I'd long since met the requirements for it. Need 250 Hell Baron kills and 72 more melee kills, but I'm long past 10,000 total kills lol.

New goal is to finish Angel Of 100 to try and grab more exotics and uniques for those badges. Current save is on floor 26 working on MSs but its been awhile since I played and couldn't even tell you what gear I have other than finding the Anti-Freak Jackal. When I first found it I was kinda iffy, but that's because I was fighting a ton of Lost Souls who apparently have killer fire resist. It's currently my backup weapon while I look for a Combat Pistol to fully mod out. Carrying a ton of mods while I work towards Wizkid 2 and try to find a good base for a Cereberus Armor.

In the middle of a HMP MSs run. Trying to get a 100% kill rate HMP run in for the badge. This is the first time I've actually gotten MSs recently so that's nice.

Found a Firestorm pack in Hells Armory. Is it with turning a regular pistol into a Demolition Ammo assembly? Math tells me it'd just be 4d2 instead of 2d4 which is effectively nil to MSs. Might be better with a combat pistol but not sure if that would be better than just slapping 3 Power mods and 2 bulk mods on it instead

Did Hell Arena on UV for the badge. It actually wasn't as bad as I expected. Seems like UV mostly has a much higher enemy count per floor rather than much harder enemies on each floor, which I kinda like. Probably gonna see if I can manage MSs runs on UV now because the XP gain is much better and MSs REALLY needs XP to get off the ground.

Also, I feel like UV Chained Court+ is actually EASIER than HMP's. A ton of formers with chain guns instead of formers with shotguns means I take a bit more damage running up to the Arena Master, BUT AT LEAST I CAN GET TO HIM lol. As long as I can clear them before Berserk wears off its not too bad.

Well, after my last long break I'm back playing this again. Been working on knocking out some badges (finally reached Warrant Officer rank after completing AoMC, AoSH, and AoPc. Not even ashamed that I save scummed AoPc, after the third time something like THIS happened



I was able to get past that eventually by baiting a former into blowing the barrel for me but damn that's annoying)

Currently back on my MSs runs on, trying to get a standard win with 100% kills on HMP and Conqueror for more completionist reasons. Unfortunately, still having trouble getting a pistol run off the ground. Specifically right now having trouble with Chained Court+, Phobos Anomaly and Phobos Labs, if someone has advice for those.

Chained Court+ on HMP, I'm having trouble with the huge number of shotgun toting formers surrounding the Arena Master. Arena Master himself isn't really a problem, but getting shoved around by all those shotguns makes it hard to get in close with the Chainsaw while Berserked. I'm getting knockbacked like 2+ spaces in multiple directions most of the fight. I can usually succeed anyway by popping a med pack, but a few times I've had Berserk flat out run out before I can even reach the Arena Master.

For Phobos Labs, the first part of the ambush near the end is extremely lethal. After I flip the last switch, the former sergents who show up always shove me back into the acid 100% of the time right after the Envirosuit randomly cancels for some reason. The only way I've found to beat it is to pop the second Envirosuit and just stand my ground. If I happen to have a combat shotty (or through extreme luck a tac shotty) its child's play, but with either a regular shotgun or using Pistols a drawn out fight near that acid pool just chews me up. I've tried running for cover, I've tried sniping the sergents... Can't find a relatively safe strat.

For Anomaly, I'm having trouble in the initial room ambush. Never fail to get surrounded by Lost Souls/pinkies even if I try to run for cover. Even with a combat shotgun I can't seem to clear ground fast enough to stop from getting hit. This is true for all runs, not just MSs. I'd like to get the badge for clearing Anomaly without damage but I just can't see how. Ironically, I can clear Babel pretty much 100% of the time damageless now (when I can actually GET that far in a run, which is rare).

Other things since last time I played:

Complete newfound respect for movespeed boosts and Hell Runner since playing AoPc. Holy shit, despite being frustrating that was pretty fun. When I finally won it I had Nylap. boots and Necroarmor, and I just zipped right on by most things. Straight up outrunning Cybie was hilarious

Tried to do a speedrun under 25 minutes on my AoMc run. Cateye scout was interesting, I can definitely see the appeal. Not sure how I feel about speedruns tbh, just staircase diving feels kinda boring. Despite going as fast as I could, I was 18 seconds off my 25 minute time :/

Lots of good information here and I'm putting it to good use. I'll definitely use this topic as a bit of an on-going playthru commentary as well, so stop on by from time to time to see what shenanigans I've gotten into xD

I keep the Assemblies page of the wiki pulled up in browser and I alt-tab alot, and I tend to post here if something truly unusual has happened. I'll keep doing that. Idk how many mortems I'll post unless something really weird happens OR I have a question about something in the mortem.

It's good to know that SoB applies AFTER range modifiers. That's actually pretty big. My last MAD run, I actually did invest heavy in SoB and TaN both. My natural inclination is to stand my ground to unload as much DpS as possible (if I'm not reloading with Shottyman), so TaN suits me right down to the ground.

Is 10 damage the breaking point for knockback? I'm honestly not sure how that mechanic works entirely. Like, I seem to knock back Formers quite a bit with a shotgun but they only have 10 HP so I'm missing something.

As for speedloaders... I carry an Ammo Chain for a reason. If I know a big fight is about to go down (or even if I am not expecting to need my shotgun), I'll simply equip that along with my HP pistol. Suddenly my reload problems are gone xD. I do the same thing with a shell box and tactical shotgun.

Tbh, I haven't really been having reload issues once I get HP and MSS. The knockback is so frequent I just reload until my current target moves back in range. Only time this didn't work recently was in Limbo, which is obviously a much different scenario.


... I always find myself struggling to have enough space and have trouble justifying keeping the Chainsaw. That's something I've actually been meaning to ask about. What should I realistically be holding on to? For instance, are consumables (other than large health kits) really worth taking up precious storage space? Like, I generally just pass phase packs on by. I'm usually carrying 3+ mods (too many I know, but I'm usually holding them for a Stormbolter or something once I hit WK1), a rocket launcher of some sort, a shotgun (unless it's prepared), an ammo chain (could be prepared), a shell box, a stack of rockets, a stack of shotgun shells, 3 stacks of 10 mm ammo, at least one enviro suit (prefer 2, just in case). The remaining slots are taken up with whatever oddities I've found. Stuff like 3+ pieces of armor (in various states of decay and/or exotics), as many med kits as I can justify room for, skulls if I have them (like to have them for Mortuary tbh), the BFG 9000 if I haven't been to Mortuary yet (at which point I dump it), a thermie, and occasionally the Arena Master's Staff. I always try to keep a thermie on me if I find one as well as getting the lava element.

Also, been toying with the idea of picking up a side-discipline in shotguns on my MSS runs. After I get MSS, grab one rank of WK and then two of Reload and Shottyman. My last run showed me how important having a backup weapon could be when the game completely quit giving me 10mm ammo. I was able to make it, and ranks in Finesse certainly helped, but having Shottyman would have meant me taking ALOT less damage. It was kind of a very specific unusual circumstance, though.

Anyway, questions for this round:

1) How exactly does knockback work?
2) HALP PLS with inventory management!?
3) Is it worth getting Shottyman on non-shotgun runs late game or is it better to focus on making the most out of your chosen discipline?

A bit off topic: Started watching Markiplier play the new Doom game. It looks so fucking awesome. If it goes on sale during Steam's summer sale, I might have to pick it up AND I DON'T EVEN LIKE FPS GAMES

I kinda want to do another Sharpshooter run after how that turned out. I feel a little jipped by running out of ammo and never building a solid weapon (my own fault in both cases obviously). Using giftdropping and run wait definitely made it much easier. I think I'm ready to try a few UV runs, but I expect to get destroyed xD

Tbh, the idea that appeals the most to me right now is trying Angel Of 100. I'd like to see what a true late game Sharpshooter build looks like and I know I'm unlikely to hit a full build in a standard run. Maybe I'll just do a few Angel Of Marksmanship instead xD

Everything was fine thru City of Skulls, and as you can see from the mortem, I actually managed to clear most of the special levels. I found a ton of great loot, including Malek's, both pieces of the Phaseshift, the Enviroboots (which straight up saved my ass, would not have won without them), and I don't even remember what all else... But the game quit giving me ammo. ENTIRELY. Well, except for energy cells and rockets xD

If I hadn't been toting a shell box and an ammo chain the entire game, I wouldn't have made it. Every special level I got was the variety with no formers (like Limbo rather than Mortuary) so I couldn't resupply. I finished the game with the mods to make a Stormbolter but no pistol to put them in. I had more armor than I knew what to do with (legit ditched two energy shielded vests, a balistic vest, and an energy shield in addition to what I was still carrying) but not much in the way of firepower xD

I actually had to switch to my missile launcher to finish off JC. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to find an invulnerablity orb just before Dis, so I could save my Lava Element for the final fight. Went down there with no shotty ammo, an Ammo chain with 30 bullets in in, and 18 rockets. Holy crap

Having my best Sharpshooter run yet. I actually cleared both Phobos and Deimos Labs, which actually got me high enough level to get my master trait AND I was able to assembly a HP pistol. Now I found enough mods to make a Stormbolter once I find another pistol xD. I actually cleared The Wall without taking a single hit due to the high knockback. I equipped an Ammo Chain to reduce my reload speeds and the Hell Barons only got a single shot off.

Currently packing an Assault Shotgun (I got a S mod from Deimos Lab and intend to make a plasmatic shrapnel assault shotgun as my secondary weapon) and am considering taking on City Of Skuils... I have some nice A and T modded reds, as well as the T needed to finish a Ballistic red... But if I do that, idk if I'll get another T mod for my Stormbolter. Not sure how much I care about skulls either, if I can get the PS assault shotty to gib corpses with in Mortuary.

Oh hell, dying's half the fun right? ONWARD TO GREATNESS (and loads of XP)

I'm mostly doing standard runs, so I do use a shotgun until around the end of Arena, when I pick up SoG3. After that I mostly use the pistol unless I need the knockback or AoE waveclear.

So using my initial T mod on the starting pistol is the smart move? Should I go ahead and mod it into a speedloader once I get the chance? Or is it better to save my first A mod to make a set of Tactical Boots?

Also, is there any reason to lug around the Chainsaw found in CC? I've been toting it with the thought that maybe I can clear UC with it, but I realize that with no melee traits and no Hatred skulls this is extremely unfeasable
