Discussion / Suggest a character build for me
« on: December 31, 2009, 08:02 »
Angel of Purity game, HNTR. I was thinking of a basic ammochain build, but on lvl 4 I bumped into an advanced combat shotgun, so I thought maybe I could use that for something. The Finesse I already took blocks army of the dead - too bad, adv. combat shotty is the perfect weapon for it pretty much. Give me some good ideas.

Traits: Finesse 2, Juggler. Weapons: chaingun, rocket launcher, combat shotguns, shotgun. Plenty of armours, green and blue.

I Saved after 4 levels and will continue sometime next year. Happy new year everybody! Don't blind yourself with explosives while drunk, it's harder to play DoomRL without eyesight.

Bug Reports / Finesse doesn't work with melee. Bug or feature?
« on: December 31, 2009, 06:39 »
Going for strongman silver using knives, picked finesse (for whizkid). @ screen still says fire speed is 1.00/sec. Is this intended? Using 0.9.9 for windows.

Discussion / Math! Formulas! Yay! (Speed&Accuracy)
« on: December 31, 2009, 04:50 »
Comparing agility/power/tech mods' usefulness on weapons, such as plasma, is kinda hard. So anyone know:

1)How is firing time calculated? Is it

BASE+finesse+finesse+techmod+techmod+techmod+sonofa+sonofa+sonofa

or

BASE*finesse*finesse*techmod*techmod*techmod*sonofa*sonofa*sonofa

or

BASE*(finesse+finesse)*(techmod+techmod+techmod)*(sonofa+sonofa+sonofa)

or something completely different?

2)Accuracy, how does it work? I remember reading somewhere it's calculated with dice rolls but couldn't find the discussion. How much does range decrease accuracy? How does range work, are the squares surrounding the player range 0 or 1, are diagonals worth more than going straight N-S or W-E and how does that effect the squares surrounding the player?

I'm not sure if anyone knows the specifics of the accuracy calculation and whether Kornel would like to tell us the exact formulas but I'd be pleased with someone explaning just the speed part.

Forum / Mortem tags aren't working?
« on: November 14, 2009, 14:49 »
Have any changes been done to the forums lately? I just noticed that the tags aren't working for me. This causes some funny things to happen, such as in this thread http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,2447.0.html the latter half of ZZ's opening post is bolded, italicized and struck through thanks to the rockets, power cells and nuke in his inventory. Also after his post the rests of the thread still looks like this although one of the three tags mysteriously stops working.

Looking at some other topics in the post mortem forum such as this http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,2450.0.html it's only the first post that's affected, the replies look normal.

I'm using firefox 3.5.5 but the problem remained when I took a quick peek with IE.

Discussion / No Max Carnage on Phobos Arena?
« on: October 30, 2009, 04:58 »
Do the effects of the Angel of Max Carnage challenge stop working when you enter lvl 25? In my battle with the Cyberdaemon he actually missed me once, only did 36 damage with the two shots that hit me (red armour reduced that to 28) and I had to hit him six times with my BFG to kill him. I could've just gotten lucky with the miss, 2% chance afterall, but the damages done and received seem awfully low. So it looks like dice rolls aren't automatically maxed when fighting the Cyberdaemon. Is this intended?

6
The new BFG sucks! You can no longer run in the mortuary to dodge stuff, because then your BFG shots miss the archviles 3 times in a row and you die! This change from an awesome weapon to "enchanted rocketlauncher +1" isn't even documented in version.txt! We demand proper punishment to the sick bastard whose idea this was!

Seriously though: for each inventory space you get less than two shots of a rocketlauncher on steroids? The advanced rocketlauncher from The Wall + lots of rockets per inventory space feels much more useful. The old BFG was good, it used up lots of ammo but the shots went where you wanted them to go and didn't miss.

And now for something completely different: an idea for a badge: "% monsters killed on Angel of Pacifism". My last pacifist got 18% just playing normally. Surely something like 40-50% is possible? Don't know about numbers or names for the badges or what it should replace, just throwing the idea out there.

--------------------------------------------------------------

(1) This win, with the Manubus melee kills and the silver badge, made me Mancubus Warrant Officer, yay!

(2) The remaining six monsters were a pack of R's, V's and M's in the top left corner of lvl24 in a small room with the entrance on the other side from the monsters. I took one step in, got reduced to 32% and decided not to risk it and instead homing phased out.

(3) I'm liking the new traits. Brute with melee accuracy is awesome. It was damn frustrating in 9.8.10 to miss every other attack while knights and barons seemed to land every single one of theirs. Now EE isn't necessary. Blademaster is very powerful. Together with HR and DM you can close in on mobs fast, then kill them all in a couple of turns. Haven't tried Vampyre yet so don't know how that compares, but I'd guess it isn't quite as useful.

(4) The Cathedral went well. Managed to berserk once off the losts souls, got two more boosts from the demons and the Angel fell easily. I can't remember if I even needed to use a medpack.

(5) This was useful, but I think I could've beat the game even without it. I was swimming in (modded) armours pretty much the whole game.

(6) The Spider's Lair was the only level I could've nuked. The level before it was insane, I entered the Lair with two berserk packs, invincibility and a supercharge, and decided to fight it out. I was berserking and still invincible entering the next level with ~170% health. Didn't bother to pick up the rewards, which would've included yet another nuke I guess...

(7) I skipped the arena (after three deaths I figured it's not easy to complete on AoB), wall, vaults and mortuary. Tried for 100% but couldn't quite make it.

(8) The Cyberdaemon fight was a bit of a letdown :) There was a berserk pack on lvl 24 four or five steps from the downstairs.

EDIT: After posting this, I'm noticing guns reloading after second shot kill. Will continue keeping an eye on gunkata behaviour.

Having a blast playing the new version, here are some things I've come across:

When dualwielding with gunkata trait, my pistols get reloaded only when the first shot of the two makes the kill, not if the killing shot is the second one. Is this intended? It's a bit annoying, especially against pain elementals/lost souls, with bad luck my pistols get empty despite lost souls dying left and right. Then I reload just one pistol, kill a soul with that and then both guns get reloaded.

This other thing I mentioned in a mortem but it's probably good to have it here in bug reports too: it looks like "win the game" badges aren't awarded if you nuke the cyberdeamon, but lose against JC. This happened in my recent AoPc game: I nuked Cybie while invincible, didn't have another nuke so I let JC kill me, and I didn't get the pacifism badge. Dying while nuking cybie counts as a victory badge-wise, so I'm thinking this ought to count as well. Also in the mortem said I nuked cybie on lvl 26, not 25.

Playing windows version.

Discussion / Giftdropping in 0.9.9?
« on: October 23, 2009, 07:26 »
I noticed that in the vaults barons picked up the power cells in the left vault. But I'm thinking knives are no longer useful as bait. I've found that at least armour, medikits and phase devices work. Sergeants were suckers for useless >50% green armours in my few attempts at AoB.

What's your experience in the new version, and what do you use for hell knights and barons? It's not really safe to give medikits and phase devices to them as you can't one-shot them like the humans, B's end up using them.

Apparently, nuking Cybie doesn't count if you then get killed by JC, as far as badges are concenred. Grr... Dodged around until he stopped shooting rockets but since I hadn't found another thermie... In my previous AoSh game I had 3 nukes but no invincibility, damn you RNG. Dodgemaster seems like autowin against the two bosses, does JC summon monsters on harder difficulties?

I found the toughest enemies on AoPc (at least on HNTR) to be the shotgunners on early levels. My earlier attempts ended when the only way to go was through rooms with sergeants. After the first few levels the game got much easier with all the defensive talents and armour, medikits and phase devices. Barons and knights can't hit you on HNTR when you're dodging around with hellrunner, and I managed to avoid all elementals, viles and the one revenant I saw.

Went with a glass cannon sniper build, EE, CE, SoaB, TH.

The beginning went pretty well, was down to the 40s in the arena before gaining exp for lvl3 and then it was easy. I entered the wall at 98% and tried to be careful, and only got hit twice which was a good tradeoff for lots of exp (was lvl5 at the time) and the normal goodies. I didn't get shot at all in the Halls of Carnage, and leveled up to 7 while in there so I managed to leave at 100%. All in all things were good, I had lots of ammo and rockets so lots of corner firing and shooting rockets kept me in pretty good shape.

On a cavernous level with A's I shot one down and ran down the stairs. Saw the entrance to the Vaults and skipped them. Had lots of fun on one level with an invincibility. I was doing fine, but on lvl 22 the starting room was small, and when I opened the door out I was greeted with fireblasts by 2 V's and some M's, didn't bother to count them but used one of my two homing phase devices. The stairs down was in a room full of cacos, one of which took a bite of me before I got down. On a mazy lvl23 I was down to 48%. Right away I was staring at a M, blasted him with rockets, then a B also got some rockets in his face and a A fell to one salvo of damage modded plasma. Then I saw the stairs down, had to take one step in lava to get down. Skipped 24 with the other homing phase device and entered Phobos Arena with 44%...

C was spawned pretty much in the middle. First I melted two plasma rifles on him. He retaliated with a rocket to my face. At 26% I used one of my two homing devices, which threw me not far away next to the down wall. Tried to get to a better position but C came into sight quickly, shot him with the BFG, C countered with a rocket. 2%. Fuck. My second homing device took me to the far right. I started shooting rockets blindly to the left. Don't know if I hit him. When C came into sight I shot him with the BFG, looked at him and it said "mortally wounded". After "morally wounded" there's still "almost dead", so I knew he might not die to the next shot but decided to shoot him and luckily it was enough.

After reading through my mortem while posting here I noticed that I had the Phaseshift boots, so I probably was faster than the Cyberdemon and I could have made that final fight a whole lot easier for myself but that's what you get for playing at 1 am :/

Before him 5 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 4 of those were killed.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 1 souls claim to have killed him...
1 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Now that's a nice, even number of kills don't you think?

Funny thing, all those 4 deaths mentioned there have been in Hell's Arena :) After two of my wanna-be marksmen died there, each time starting next to a caco and a few demons/lost souls, I thought it would be better to leave that level alone. I also skipped the mortuary, it's just so much more difficult without the BFG and I didn't want to risk it. But this time I was ready for the Lava Pits with three envirosuits. I have to admit, steel boots and green armours are a little bit underwhelming as rewards for the last special level in the game, but at least there was also an artifact armour I didn't use at all because it was pretty blasted after I ripped it off a hell knight's carcass.

This was a fun game. I find the AoMr challenge more balanced than in some previous version I've played: I remember beating AoMr on HMP more easily than a regular game without challenges on HNTR. There have been some changes to the pistol perks I think, or maybe something else but either way the difficulty was good: about as difficult as my shotgun game earlier, not too rough. I was down to maybe 14 bullets in my inventory at one stage and was starting to get scared but found a chaingun lying on the floor. Next time I'll carry around 500 instead of 400 rounds... Then there was a nice battle with some archviles and their gang on level 24 in a big, open space.

One thing I noticed about this game was lots and LOTS of red armours: I'm carrying 5 and discarded one on the previous level and probably another some time earlier. That's also without doing the Mortuary. Hopefully my luck won't even out and my next marine to enter Hell, an aspiring Angel of Berserk, will find many blood-red suits to make him look good while I hunt for that ever-elusive Sergeant rank :D

--------------------------------------------------------------
Every year during christmas I visit my parents house and play roguelikes on their old computer. So again this year it was time for another round of DoomRL.

I, like so many others, have been brainwashed into thinking that the only way to play doomrl is the rapidfire way of picking EE, SoaB and TH and blasting away with chainguns and plasma rifles. So I decided to give the shotguns a try, being inspired by some posts by Thomas and others on these forums.

My first two guys couldn't make it past Hell's Arena, but this guy found a combat shotgun and a blue armour before the arena so it was pretty doable. I used a double shotty and a rocket launcher as my main weapons, also carried around a chaingun and one slot of ammo but dumped them after a few levels since I didn't use the gun once.

This game didn't feel too hard, I can't remember any really tight spots and at worst I was probably down to two or three large medpacks in my inventory. This game also felt more like DOOM, "strafing" imps and barons with the shotgun! Everybody ought to give shotguns a try.

First time I saw the lava pits, I was prepared for a while but lost a couple suits due to lava appearing from levers so couldn't do the level, and that's probably why I only got 95%.
