Title: Composite Look
Post by: Anticheese on March 03, 2006, 09:25
Hi, I was thinking, And I think that I have a nifty feature that could be really..nifty.

Ok, Piciture this: You are playing DoomRL, And you are walking down a narrow corridor, You switch to Composite View mode and you are given an 3D ASCII rendition on what you see in a 180 degree arc based off your last facing direction.

How it will work is off tilesets.

The game detects what is there, And adds in the elements as it sees fit.

So say you are traveling down a corridor, It will render close in walls, Ranging from greyish with the odd high-tech spec for early levels to a more hellish setting for the later levels.

Say there is a bloodstain, No problem! It just adds over a bloodstain. Composite view.

In summary, It takes all of the information in a 180 degree arc from a FPS point of view, Where the 180 degree arc is facing the direction you last moved to. From then on it has a checklist if you will that will overlay, add and subtract elements as the viewpoint changes.

ASCII FPS View.

Now I know this is a bit of an ask, But really..Its Doomish and its ASCII...What more could you ask for? :D

Mmmm... will it look alike with Akalabeth? (That one wasn't ASCII, but featured simplistic line-based graphics, which I suppose are easily recreated used ASCII).

You mean, like a text mode doom?

I think it would work ok for a game like DoomRL, in which action happens in small spaces. As I understand, you mean it should switch to a graphic mode where the ASCII is rendered in 3D? or do you mean for it to be kept in console mode and plot the things there?

Pretty much.

Where the 3D is rendered in ASCII..

This one is pretty close to it!

I do not like this idea... no, I do not like this idea. Sounds useless for the work needed to make it work.

If I requested a 3D Model of the Eiffel Tower made out of cheese, I think that one would be useless..

The inspiration behind this idea was Doom, This game is inspired by Doom and I figured it would add to the Doomish appeal.

Besides, Its something cool that AFAIK has never been done in a roguelike.

Well both are useless "for me", I don't want that in, if its in I wouldn't care, if everyone like it then good I have nothing against it. But how hard is it to do? That should be answered at first IMO.

A 3D model of the Eiffel Tower made of Cheese! now thats amusing!

In the end, it is all up to Kornel... he may find it worthy or useless... it would be more of a luxury that an integral gameplay enhancement for me, but that kind of details make up a good game.

For a roguelike with good tile graphics turned into FPP roguelike (also graphical of course), go to http://www.freewebs.com/z137/ivan.html (this was what jimmyj was talking about, but the link should be useful)

Thanks for all the replys people!

BTW, Packrat got the six hundreth and sixty sixth post in the request for features forum (666).

Anyhoo, If anyone has any ideas of how it can be improved, Please say so, There is no such thing as bad criticism unless you count: "OmFG YoUr Id30R SuZx0r$!!11!1 LOlOloLol"

Eww..I cringed while typing that..

Also if Kornel has any comments, I would like to hear them

Well it's fun and nice, but...

... give me at least 3 remarkable reasons how would that enhance GAMEPLAY? :-/

I DO plan on doing a 3D game, but not in the case of DoomRL ;-).

Ok...

#1 - It will add to the doom feel of the game

#2 - It is a unique feature (Or leastways I thought it was before someone noted that there is an IVAN modification) that will add a twist to gameplay should one choose to activate it

#3 - I'm sorry, I cant think of much here. I was going along the lines of a chance to show off the ASCII'd Graphics and semihires tiles but I have a 28 tonne writers block crushing my fingers.

Still, I hope you can:

A. Think about it

B. Tell us about the 3D game! :)

well, i think anti was thinking of a key to press to give you a quick 3d view, not make the whole game constantly 3d
