Title: Masterless class
Post by: Const on April 27, 2012, 07:33
Now we have 3 classes? each with own masters. But? what about massterless game?

Idea: new class.
No master perks, but ALL advanced perks count as basics. And bonus - perhaps, some experience%

Any suggestions?

all advanced perks count as basic? take dodgemaster first pick, then int2, then shottyman, win. Nawww, too easy.

All advanced traits being instantly available would be just about the easiest way to break the game, yeah. The traits associated with the three classes are already powerhouses at low-level. When classes were introduced, Int2 got a huge boost in utility from not requiring four levels of traits to get, and Badass had to be nerfed to keep it's effects in line with other class-available advanced traits.

Playing masterless is its own reward in being able to choose any basic or advanced skill; this is enough reward in itself.

Hmm... yeah, having the four Masterless Masteries maxed out (Eagle Eye, Tough As Nails, Son Of A Bitch, Finesse) makes you pretty hard to stop, and if you're playing pistols you can throw Son of a Gun in there as well. That in and of itself is enough to see you through to the end of EXP gain

Masterless chainfire and pistol builds are awesome, though I don't think that masterless melee or shotgun is a good idea. Might be wrong tho.

Masterless shotgun worked pretty well for me, esp with SM and INT; fire at something that can't see you, move a step away and auto-reload, repeat. Takes up quite some ammo due to the range, but it gets the job done.

However, a new class which has increased experience gain, but lacks master traits would work well as for me. Should be called "Officer" I suppose.

I don't like the fact that it would discourage playing masterless with the other classes

Masterless Officer gets no benefits. Make it purely a "Hard Mode" class; no masteries, no EXP bonus, none of the class types' other misc benefits, nothing. =B

In other words, he's the doomguy we had before all these Technicians, Scouts, and Marines started clogging things up with their Gun Kata and their Ammochains and their Malicious Blades

And make him available only after finishing the game at least once for all of three classes.

Why not have advanced versions of the classes themselves. IE the bonuses from certain traits are hindered and certain ones are buffed up or traits that do not go very well with the class in general could be replaced by newer traits. Have technician turn into Hacker have a trait that adds a new master for shotgun to have all shotgun weapons fire +1/+2/+4 pellets per shot but have a defined range. Have scouts become Recon, with advanced intuition that when looking at monsters you might be able to tell what their next move is (damn that would be hard to program i bet), and have marines become Veteran with regenerative health per say 10 turns 1-3 points of health when not in combat. Might even include a new combat mode for advanced scout like running called stealth where monsters have reduced chance of seeing you and you can attack and get 2x damage from sneak. sorry for the massive diatribe here they stock RedBulls in the fridge at my work.

Because then nobody would use the regular ones.  And auto-regenerating HP would be immensely broken for anyone willing to wait long enough.

How about have them unlocked after you complete an "Angel of" run on N! relating to that advanced class? that way, the class itself isn't some handout...

There would still be no reason to use the original in that case.

Unlocks are not upgrades. There should be no unlocks that obsolete or replace a pre-existing option. No "Marine/Scout/Tech but BETTER" option.

This sounds quite like the Desktop Dungeons variant. But then we should think about development lines. Also, as like balancing three classes weren't enough…

I'm sure Game Hunter loves a challenge.

here's my thought, starting from broken's suggestion.

Instead of "upgrade", how about further specialization or creative alternate abilities. That way the original classes still get some use.

For example, the Guerilla - An ambush specialist. Your first attack on any enemy does bonus damage. Barrels do more damage, except to you. Trait list would probably be based on the Marine, but at least one swap - MFA instead of MAD.

Edit: Although we have gotten a bit off-track from the Masterless suggestion....

Cateye was in before the master trait system though. >_>

Ultimately, though, I think this ties in to the criticism of the "upgraded" classes - very few people would bother with it if it didn't have some sort of bonus or advantage.
