Requests For Features / Re: Phase devices
« on: January 01, 2008, 14:33 »
I always try to carry around one phase device. They've bailed me out of several sticky situations where spamming health pack either wouldn't have cut it or would have required burning through 5 or 6 large medpacks or even. (Usually being surrounded by Arachnotrons.)

Bug Reports / Strange Crash.
« on: December 31, 2007, 23:28 »
I just had a crash occur shortly after loading a saved game. (NOT savescummed) The odd thing about it was that even though it gave the message saying to copy down the error information, it didn't show any lines of error information until I finally X'd out, at which point the lines flashed for a fraction of a second. Unfortunately, I was barely too slow hitting the print screen button to capture those lines, and because I tried my SS of the crash itself was overwritten with a SS of my desktop. >_> (I had hit F9 and F10 as well, but they appear not to work during a crashed game.)

So no solid information, but it might be worth trying to reproduce.

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [M|89%|YAVP] First win of the new version.
« on: December 31, 2007, 23:05 »
Hmm. I didn't think about the whole running thing. Not sure if that enitrely counteracts the increased chance of being hit though.

At any rate, I think that SoaB/TH definitely need a nerf. I'd suggest limiting SoaB to 2 levels and getting rid of Triggerhappy entirely.

For those wondering why it took me 14 games to get a victory, my first 13 games were all attempts a shotgun-based, because Kornel had said that he'd made shotguns actually useful in this version. Instead, they seem to be even more useless then before, not just in comparison to the SoaB'd stream weapons but even on their own, thanks to the shortened range and new tactics system. (One of the very few saving graces of shotguns in earlier versions was that they had 100% accuracy even in coward mode)

Meanwhile, the boost from SoaB is even more game-breakingly powerful then I predicted here. Trigger Happy is just the icing on the cake. Since picking up a chaingun and getting my first level of SoaB, I was not even remotely in danger of dying the entire game. For shame.

Discussion / Re: AoB.. I can't do it
« on: December 31, 2007, 06:59 »
Here's an interesting chart Blade made back in 0.9.8.5 of the difficulty level of AoB (On UV anyway), and his suggestions on making things more balanced. I think most of his suggestions still hold true in the current version, so I'm going to repost it so that people who weren't around then can discuss it/others rediscuss it.

About AoB - we have such graph of difficulty on UV

OMG          |     -----*
Really hard |   -
Pretty hard |-
Medium      |                              --
Pretty easy|
Easy          |               --------**
Cakewalk   |                                    -------***
                |_______________________________
                  1 2 3 4 5  CC 6-15     UC  16-25

So imho we need to flat this graph ("*" means problems with difficlty).

* - i prefer Advanced knife at the start.))
** - i agree with Fingerzam that bonus from medikits and large globes should be removed. But this will force player to pick at least Berserk*1 to pass UC. Anyway, i don't think that it's soo bad.
***  - hmm, some nerfing of LS will do the trick.
Notes: In 0.9.8.5 there were no mods, so "advanced" weapons simply did more damage. Thus, Blade's first suggestion has for all intents and purposes been implemented in 0.9.8.8. I still think that his second two suggestions should definitely be implemented though, so that the game after receiving the chainsaw does not become ridiculously easy. It is supposed to be a challenge after all, and a difficult one at that. I would say get rid of berserking with Large items, and get rid of the armor bonus for the UC weapon. (8d8 is already so much more powerful then 4d6 that it's by far worth going after even without basically making you near-impervious to damage.)

Arch-Viles do NOT ressurect themselves. They leave "generic" corpses that can't be ressurected.
Okay then, my apologies.

Requests For Features / Re: Water
« on: December 30, 2007, 07:49 »
The barrel could also go "The barrel falls and spills its contents to the water!", transforming the particular water tile, as well as a couple tiles around it, into acid.

I like this idea best, I think.

Requests For Features / Re: Request for Comments : Armor weight
« on: December 30, 2007, 07:47 »
It doesn't matter how much it impacts movement speed. Just having something like that at all feels WRONG.

Look at me, I'm carrying 500 kg of shells and 10mm rounds and 3 spare sets of armor but should I ever wear just one of those 3 armors I carry in my backpack I'll be slowed down.......

Let's cut the heroic marine some slack and let him walk unencumbered into the halls of Hell.

Personally, I think it's good to embrace change every once in a while. After all, you mention ADOM - that used to be just a single dungeon. If someone had said 'What, add a wilderness? No, that = Daggerfall, not ADOM. It feels WRONG' then it wouldn't have been half the game it is today (well, if Thomas Biskup had listened).

Obviously, there are caveats, but we shouldn't reject change purely because it's change and it frightens us - we should have more logical grounds. Otherwise we'll end up with 'No unique weapons, this != Nethack', 'No Unique Monsters, this != Angband', etc etc. It's a bad road to start down. There's no reason not to utilise good ideas just because they're present in other games.

The main problem I can think of is that a lot of situations where you're in trouble are ones where armour just won't help - a minimum of one damage is always done, and the game only allots 50 HP initially. So even if armour reduces all damage to 1, if you get surrounded by three or so Arachnotrons who are hitting with any frequency, you'll still be dead in a couple of rounds.

My point being that armour just isn't that big a part of the game right now. Perhaps if the HP were doubled (and subsequently attack strengths doubled as well), and armour therefore became more important, it'd be worth it. But as it is now, it seems like substantial work for minimal gain.

The thing is, ADoM is a slow-paced, serious Roguelike. Anything adding more depth to the game is usually good in that case (As long as it isn't silly or detract from the gameplay experience.) This is a fast-paced, coffee-table roguelike. Adding too much "real" stuff to it for no real reason detracts from the gameplay experience IMO. I have to agree with the majority on this one, this is really something that should be saved for when Kornel releases one of his "serious" roguelikes.

Bug Reports / Tactics in Help Files
« on: December 30, 2007, 07:35 »
Not really a bug per se, but in both the in game help and the help file packaged with DoomRL still refer to tactics as "Aggressive, Cautious, and Cowardly" and give tips accordingly. Considering that these were the first places I went to try and find out what the heck the new tactics system does, you may want to think about changing that.

Announcements / Re: DoomRL 0.9.8.8 - Released!

Without the fuzzy full screen anti-aliasing.

My Laptop does this. I started playing Roguelikes on it (about 2 years ago) so for a while I thought it was just what happened when a roguelike went full screen. Then at one point about 9 months ago I ended up playing NetHack on a Desktop while my laptop was in for repairs and it was...beautiful...

Too bad you can't change the video cards in laptops. (That I know of.)

Discussion / Re: The End has come
« on: December 29, 2007, 07:26 »
At the very least, I think Arch-Viles should stop leaving corpses. It didn't matter in Doom 2, because the level layouts were designed so that AVs wouldn't get close enough to others' corpses to cause problems. The kind of AV res-chaining that can go on in DoomRL if you get 3 or 4 of them in a level is definitely not Doomish IMO since it basically requires you to run to the next level or die.

As for the Mortuary, I never went there except on Easy anyway, and post-0.9.8.7 I never went there at all. So, this is just one more nail in the coffin of me taking on the Mortuary I guess. :-P

Discussion / Re: AoB.. I can't do it
« on: December 29, 2007, 07:21 »
Angel of Berserk has absolutely abysmal difficulty balance. Level 3 is where the challenge is at it's absolute hardest (According to Blade anyway) and the difficulty drops like a rock when you get the chainsaw- and once you get the secret weapon, it's far easier than any other scenario.

We talked about retooling it back before 0.9.8.7 came out to balance the difficult, but Kornel opted to just change the description from Hard to Medium instead. Less work that could be used for other features I guess. :-P

Anyway, don't worry about it too much, it makes sense that you're having trouble at that stage in the game.

Yeah, some posts make a lot of misunderstandings. Don't worry, GenRogue will be released before JADE xP.

BTW, you would be willing to pay a subscription fee for a roguelike? Then why not donate to the ones you like the best ;).
We already talked about this in the chat silly. :-P

I currently can't donate over the internet because I'm 17, but I plan to donate like $50 when I turn 18.

After much mucking about the internet, I realized I was thinking of Jade. I'm pretty sure when people were discussing online multiplayer roguelikes on the GameFAQs NetHack board that somebody claimed Jade would be available online and multiplayer for a subscription fee. Looks like that's not actually going to happen though, which is too bad.
