Requests For Features / Re: 'T' is for traits.

0.9.9 didn't come out that long ago, or am I the only one with a questionable ability to memorize things?

Pretty minor suggestion, but it'd be nice to bring up the trait screen at any point just view the descriptions/requirements/blocked traits. See I play DoomRL on desktop #2, and the browser pointed at the wiki is in #3, so if I could access the screen in game it'd easily save me ~2-3 key presses. Eventually I'll remember if Ammohain blocks Brute and such, but until then how will I manage?

Congrats on downloading DoomRL, and while you're at it, why not get Aliens RL and Berserk RL :P
No love for DiabloRL? Now that you say something, I should check out Aliens and Berserk, I just wish DiabloRL got a touch more attention (well, really looking for more of a game, but one thing at a time).

Jarkko brought this up a little while back. I think (not too sure if I remember this correctly) that dying to JC results in a Partial Win, and to get the badge for winning any given challenge requires a Standard Win or Full Win.
I think you are right about dying to JC, but in terms of badges (at least for pacifism) I know getting a partial win via nuking cybie and dying does get you a badge. I posted my diamond pacifism run in the Nightmare! board, it's still pretty recent. It only counted as a partial win, but it's my one diamond badge.

230
I wonder why this was changed. In 0.9.8.10 I was able to get a standard pacifism win the time I made it to JC (almost dead when I died), but from what I've heard it doesn't work in 0.9.9. I don't think it's been addressed yet though.

Well if you can't remember if you saw a globe or not I'd say that you need to lay off the drugs. I have a short memory but heck it's not like they are tough to see or anything like that.

Nail, head, you got it.

Discussion / Would it be considered cheating if I....
« on: October 26, 2009, 09:27 »
Wrote a terminal for DoomRL that remembered where globes were after the player saw them and continued to display them until they were determined gone? I find one of the hardest things while playing can be remembering if and where I saw a globe. I think it technically isn't cheating because it's only using information (past and present) that was already given to the user, but sometimes I can go a little too far.

It's worth noting that the terminal is already written. It doesn't implement the entire VT spec, but enough of it to display DoomRL almost correctly. I still need to find exactly what characters are in the DEC Special Character and Line Drawing Set and their UTF-8 values, so there are a few things that display with the wrong symbol. The 'remember globe' feature hasn't been written, but I'm thinking about it. If you are wondering why I wrote it, it's because I wanted to resize the window.

Bug Reports / Re: Globe bug?

AStranger: As you said, an off-screen explosion. When a barrel explodes off screen, a message appears saying "You hear an explosion", which is the message I was talking about.

Ohhh... that message. Some how I failed to make that connection, probably an indication I should actually read messages (yet I learned this lesson dying on the plane of air in Nethack, always read the messages). Either way I'm out of ideas on the missing globe.

Bug Reports / Re: Globe bug?
« on: October 25, 2009, 09:57 »
Yeah, sure, why not? I mean, aside from a message popping up and stopping you from doing anything, that makes perfect sense!
Except that it doesn't. I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to say, but my point is the only way I've ever seen a globe disappear is either an explosion (rocket, Baron of Hell, etc..) or me picking it. I'm not saying mobs can't use them, I've just never seen it. As for the message you speak of, I have no idea what you are talking about. At no point did my example mention anything about a message.

Bug Reports / Re: Globe bug?

Could it be off screen explosions destroying the globes? As far as I can tell globes stick around until I pick them up, but my memory isn't so great about remembering the globes in the first place.

Bug Reports / (Linux) 0.9.9 A harmless EAccessViolation
« on: October 24, 2009, 03:35 »
I haven't played much DoomRL directly under Linux (using Qemu->Windows XP) but having run it a few times I was always confused when I quit and got a message like:

An unhandled exception occurred at $0805B203 :
EAccessViolation : Access violation
  $0805B203
  $08055CE4
  $08055BB2

After poking at the problem for a few minutes I realized the problem was that DoomRL was being run directly in an xterm I had lying around and not via any of the doomrl_* scripts. This would be okay, if my default terms where 80x25 and not 80x24. So to make a long story short, if you run DoomRL in a term that is too small, you'll get this message after you quit. So resize your term.

The win condition for AoPc must have been changed in 0.9.9, because my first pacifism win in 0.9.8.10 I was invulnerable during the nuke, made it to JC (who was almost dead when I died, that was a fun challenge), but still got a standard win for it. I can dig up the mortem, but I know that it used to work.

Nightmare! / Re: [N!|AoPc|MFa|YAVP] Pacifism Diamond Badge
« on: October 23, 2009, 00:39 »
To be fair, after the coffee, most of my day has been either playing DoomRL, or writing an OpenGL terminal to play DoomRL with.

It's hard to tell how useful Fireangel is, which I'm assuming is more then it looks like, but it's the only thing worth getting after a certain point. Without being able to take HR you don't have to feel bad about taking TaN first. I opted to grab Ironman next, so full healing and power-ups would be slightly more effective. After that Fireangel was a given, because there wasn't anything else left to take.

In terms of how useful it is, probably a decent amount. In tight areas with Barons of Hell, Hell Knights even Imps I was much safer if there was a layer of mobs between me and the source of the projectile. In terms of running across an open area with a group of mobs, it's probably the only way to survive without HR. There was a few times this run where a Baron of Hell or two are in the center of a large room with other mobs, and I needed to get to the other side. Without HR, I had to carefully make sure I could maximize the amount of meat shields between me and the Barons, while running straight at the Barons. Their melee attack hurts, but sometimes it's worth it to avoid the extra chances of a direct ranged hit.

In the end though, AoPc takes a healthy amount of luck on top of tough choices (do I spend 10 turns grabbing that medpack, or just hit the stairs now....).

Now instead of thinking it is possible I know it is. Didn't really expect to finish the run, mainly just started it so I had something to do while drinking my morning coffee. Once I hit dlevel 16 and had two homing phase devices, my excitement started to grow a little bit. At that point there was still seven stairs to find, and using a homing device out of fear early could cost me the game. I only had to run through about three arachnotron levels, two where easy (read: lucky stair placement), the other I was fortunate enough to start with a red armor and berserking (the armor didn't last even half the ~30-40 step journey). Level 21 could have gone much worse, it was an open level with stairs in the corner but the entrance to the vaults was three steps away. I was getting worried at level 22, nasty mobs all over the place and there wasn't much room for exploring, so I decided to sacrifice a homing device early and proceed to get hit with a rocket the moment after. Again with the luck, the stairs were against the side wall of the level, so the blast didn't knock me off of them. Level 23 was a quick stair case find, 24 was a homing device.

I can rest easier now knowing that I have at least one diamond badge.

Obviously my first post, so hopefully I got the subject right. I've spent a good chunk of today doing N! AoPc runs, without Hellrunner for the diamond badge, this was the best so far.

After I took Fireangel, there wasn't any useful traits left to take. So the Pacifism Diamond badge is possible (I think), it just relies on a decent dose of luck and belief.
