Title: Trait Requests!
Post by: Thomas on May 11, 2009, 00:12
I'm pretty sure we used to have a "New traits go here" topic but it died or got deleted or something. So I'll start up a new one and see if anyone's still got ideas.
I'm still up for discussion on my Artful Dodger (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php?topic=1933.0) trait, and I've also got a new one here to get things rolling.

Everliving
"Tis but a SCRATCH!"
Some say you can't die. Well, the people at the UAC do anyway. They've seen you get hit by cars and emerge with broken fingers, fall off cliffs and miss the ground. Anything that should bump you off the mortal coil just seems to stop a little bit short.
Any time you "die", the damage and accuracy of the projectile is rerolled. Should it either miss or not do enough damage to kill you with these new rolls, you live.
This ability has no cooldown and will always trigger whenever you hit 0 HP.

Requires ironman 2.

Hesitation
"Hell will fear me!"
(I haven't think of one...)
When the monsters use ranged attack at you, there's is a delay for a couple of turns.

Requires badass

Hesitation needs a lot more detail on what the exact effect is.

For the quote:

Where you go, even demons fear to tread.

or

Few can stand against your hellish stare.

For a better name, try "Tamer of Hell," as it's not YOU who hesitates.

All numbers subject to tweaking and rebalancing.

Lucky Bastard - 3 tiers
"Possession is nine-tenths of the law."
Requirements: None
The spawn rate of powerups and equipment (weapons, ammo, armor, mods, medkits, etc.) is increased by 15/30/45%.

Speed of Thought - 1 tier
"Can't touch this!"
Requirements: Hellrunner 3
You have supernaturally fast reflexes. Attacks that would automatically hit you (Arch-Vile flames, shotguns, Revenant missiles) have a 50% chance to miss you while you're moving (75% if you're running).
Title: Re: Trait Requests!
Post by: Visalos on May 12, 2009, 18:53
the increased item rate would be unlocked by a 'packmule' trait if anything. and those percentages are way too high.

Stonebreaker
"It's clobbing time!"
Your hands are so hard that your skin of your hands are made of very thick and tough leathery hide and the bones are much harder than diamonds. With this, you can break down walls, and send monsters flying across the floor and makes a bloody mess. however, with that much force, you will get tired and can't use it again until it wears off.
Requirement: Brute 3, Ironman 3

Or maybe the name Evil eye would suffice and the quote being "I see you!"

Unseen
"Now you see me, now you don't!"
If 'Hide 'n' Seek' were an acceptable game at the UAC (and why would it be?), you'd never be found, even if you were standing right in the open. You manage to blend into the walls so perfectly, people who are otherwise skilled at detecting camouflaged soldiers run straight into you without even knowing you were there. For every level of this skill, monsters have another 25% chance of not seeing you when you're standing still, 20% when walking, and 15% when running. Firing, however, gives away your position completely.
Requires Hellrunner 3
Max level: 3

I've already suggested this one before, but the topic has drowned. So, I'm reposting my idea. Discuss !

Addict

Dynamite !

Requirements : Ironman(3)

You are very vunerable for side-effects of pain medicine. This makes you feel really pissed off and gives you around 33,3% chance of going berserk while using small med-packs and 66,6% for large med-packs. Of course, you won't get a healing effect of a berserk pack. And no, this doesn't apply for power-ups, only stuff.

As I said before, this would make IM worth picking even by less experienced players, and would make AoB a little bit easier. Yes, it needs balancing. And yes, it needs a better quote !

Godspeed

"How is that even... how are you doing that?"

Guys at UAC made you play piano till your soul comes out so now your fingers are so fast that you can reload your rapidfire weapons every shot! Oh yeah, Phobos no more reload!

Req: Eagle Eye (2), Son of a Bitch (2)

Nuclear Boy

"I'm sick of this hell"

You are so sick of this hell, that you'd rather shit thermo-nuclear bomb than mess with this f****** monsters.. oh wait, WHAT'S THIS? Yeah, you can shit thermie, but beware! This is so much strain on your body, that your HP will be instantly decreased to 20 % and bomb isn't small so it will take you 10 seconds to do it, and it kinda smells so you will activate it with your foot, you don't wanna take nasty things to your inventory do you?

Req: Though as Nails (3)

Jumper

"I don't fear lava"

You can jump! There are 2 levels, 1: 1 square in air, 2: 2 squares in air, so basically on lvl 1 you're traveling 2 squares and on lvl2 - 3 squares. It can be used for jumping over small lava/acid areas, also on second level you can jump over barrels. Beware! When hit in air, you will fall into square you've been jumping over and also your armor is reduced by 1 (on second level it's not reduced).

Idiot

I'm an idiot, kill me somebody! I'm an idiot, kill me somebody!

After endless war with hellish monsters your became idiot. Nothing good you would say but are you sure? With this trait you move 30% slower and your accuracy is decreased by 4 points, but you're so pitful idiot that even monsters from hell pity you and are not attacking unless you attack them (or are ignoring you for 3 turns when they see you and after 3 turns they attack).

I know, stupid ideas but let's not be so serious about that... but ok I'll stop :)

'Brawler (3)

"Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!"

You've been in more than your fair share of fistfights. For every level of this trait you gain a +15% bonus to dodge in melee combat, as well as a +2 bonus to-hit with a melee weapon.'

This trait could potentially be combined with Brute to give a general melee specialisation trait, like Son of a Gun is with pistols.

I have idea for expansion of Whizzkid trait. So it would be Whizzkid (3) - you gain ability of 1 extra mod per normal weapon and from now on you can remove mods from items and apply them to other! Lets say in inventory you'll select weapon and press 'l' or 'u' and then you will eject all mods.

To uber. You will be able to stack mods in other weapons, and later use them in the weapon of your choice. SOund reasonable, that you can take out the mods, but this would really make you marine a really, really great ass-kicker.
Title: Re: Trait Requests!
Post by: Kg on June 03, 2009, 13:50
But it's a whole one point in whizzkid, could be spent on sth else.. but if that's your opinion, maybe marine should be able to recover only 2 or 3 mods of his choice? So when you have 8 mods, you can only retrieve 2. And also all other mods that was in the weapon during this action would be destroyed.

Stubborn as a mule

No obstacle will keep you from getting the hell out of here. When other people give up, you just keep going even against impossible odds.
This trait allows you to Run twice as long before getting tired. Also Berserk and Invulnerability powerups last twice as long.
Requires ironman 2

Reasonable yes, but it could cause Nightmare to become very easy with the Ber/Inv already lasting twice as long there.
Title: Re: Trait Requests!
Post by: Kg on June 05, 2009, 03:46
So maybe we should disable this trait in Nightmare, or disable 2x time in Nightmare :}
Title: Re: Trait Requests!
Post by: Dervis on June 05, 2009, 07:08
Just make it a +50% in Nightmare, even makes it easier to code.
Let's say Berserk/Invulnerability lasts 30 seconds (60 in Nightmare), if the trait says +30 seconds you have 60 on normal and 90 on Nightmare.
Title: Re: Trait Requests!
Post by: Mr_Dead on June 05, 2009, 13:21
Works, but still could be to easy depending on if you have the luck to find several of the powerups close together *chained court, that is a technical 12 berserk at once right there with the +50%*...perhaps the +50% and no stacking the powerup times together?

Armorer:
level 1 - damage to armor is halved
level 2 - worn armor protection is increased by 50%, rounding up

Doctor:  (requires 1 ironman or 1 tough as nails)
level 1 - medpacks are 25% more potent (small medpacks heal 2.5 + 31.25% max health, large medpacks heal to 125%)
level 2 - medpacks are 50% more potent (small medpacks heal 3 + 37.5% max health, large medpacks heal to 150%)

Force of Will:  (requires 1 Finesse)
+3 pushback - player attacks push back as if they did 3 more damage (but with no actual bonus damage)

Ambidexterity:
Dualgunner, but for melee

Digger: (requires Brute level 2)
Can destroy walls with your melee attack, if you hit hard enough (perhaps it also costs the player 1hp each use?)
or
Inner Fire:  (requires Berserker)
Melee attacks create 1-range splash damage around attacked square @ half power, which doesn't hurt player.  This can possibly destroy walls.

Splash Master:  (requires eagle eye 1, finesse 1)
Increase splash damage done to enemies by 50%, decrease splash damage done to the player by 50%

Change intuition levels to range-based (higher levels means longer detection range), rather than levers, powerups, monsters.  The current setup means that the third level is far more useful than the first two, and anyone going along this path will take all 3 levels (or otherwise take no levels)

Chili Dragon

Req: SoB 3 & Badass 3?

You just love your spicy food and over the years you have developed a nasty explosive belch your UAC colleagues consider as a risk. From time to time you need to relieve the pressure growing in your throat or you will quite possibly explode... literarily.

Effect: Produces a cone of explosive force from the player for a range of three at L1, five at L2 and seven at L3 with the damage of 6d6.

And how often would you be allowed to use this free shotgun?

Not very often, maybe couple of thousand turns between each use with each level shortening the time for a one hundred or more. And notably, when the player can use the trait he has a fifty or more turns before the ability automatically triggers and damages him too.

yay for my first post! anyway... down to traits.

OMNOMNOM
requires Brute 2.

"so that's what deep-fried Imp tastes like!"
well, you've finally discovered why zombies eat the dead... its because they taste so damn good! you have gained the ability to heal you self by eating you opponents while your in close combat. .

what this would do is give you, like, 5% of a monsters health when you kill them in close combat
and, come on, wouldn't it be cool for YOU to take a bite out a Demon for a change.

the acid-proof Rubber man
doesn't require anything.

"I'm non-biodegradeable, baby!"
though some way or another, you've gained rubber like properties, making you invulnerable to acid and you take less damage from most source... maybe it was all of those bicycle wheels you ate.

man of stone
doesn't require anything.

"I IZ ROK 'ARD, GOV!"
apparently, being coated with thin layer of lava is not fatal and is in fact a good thing (or though you did lose a few hundred braincells). you are invulnerable to lava and gain a armour bonus at the small cost of speed.

yeah, their is a type of rubber that's used by builders because its relatively acid proof/highly alkaline.

as for man of stone, yeah, I was thinking someone would say that. lol.

Aquaman

Traits Required: ?
Trait Levels: 3

You just like water, you swim in it, sleep in it and feel like a fish in it. Every time you are in the familiar liquid you move twice as fast and are more accurate. Just be careful and not step near lava or acid.

Basically, if the player is within one (L1), two (L2) or three (L3) tiles near lava or acid, he gets hit by normal Lava/Acid damage, if he steps on a tile occupied by lava or acid, the damage will double.

Trait Levels: 3
This is something that bothers me - why do most people insist on introducing new traits with MULTIPLE levels ? We don't have THAT much XP to burn and usually the difference between a single level and anything more is negligible.

Basically, if the player is within one (L1), two (L2) or three (L3) tiles near lava or acid, he gets hit by normal Lava/Acid damage, if he steps on a tile occupied by lava or acid, the damage will double.
Also - most of the time it's useless to propose traits with disadvantages, as all the other (basic) traits don't harm you in any way.

Regardless - the idea is nice. It's simply too situational for anyone to take as a single trait but one of the existing traits should add this as one of the benefits...

BTW - does wading through water slow the player down ? It should...

Hrm, I checked again and moving into a water space takes 11 turns rather than 10 with no armor and no speed traits.  I was positive that when I checked earlier it was just 10 turns.

Or maybe it's a 5% penalty so it might have taken 10.5 turns which made it appear as 10 turns occasionally?
