Title: Oldschool sprites for DoomRL
Post by: Metzger on April 21, 2013, 06:17
Hi!

This is a graphics mod that replaces player character, monster and blood sprites.
Replaces original doomrl.wad, just remember to make a backup just in case.

could you give source or at least small portion from it - how use own tiles and sprites?

(5 minutes later)
ouch, you just decompile original main doomrl.wad and change all sprites? :(

I inserted image files directly into doomrl.wad with a hex editor. No decompiling/compiling needed. Nothing else changed.

edit: May seem like stupid way of working but extracting and inserting takes only seconds once you learn offsets, it's just copy and paste operation. Just don't change file length.

That's also the only way to do it for now.

I am hesitant to encourage this.  KK has expressed as far back as 0991 his disapproval of people distributing new mods via replacement wads.

There will be official support for this later. Stay tuned.

Good on you, Kornel, and I'm going to try this out sooner or later. Looks damn good.

I tried it and frankly I prefer Yu's graphics. They're more visually distinct, and the player sprite shows the equipped weapon and armor. Your mod is good, don't get me wrong, but I simply prefer the other graphics.
