Discussion / Re: Removing movement delay?

I don't think that's the issue. The delay is much shorter in every other roguelike.

I personally would want to do that, yes. Also that isn't what I'm talking about. I'm speaking in terms of lowering the delay before running when holding a movement key, not removing it entirely.

Unfortunately the run command more or less results in the same amount of delay. Taking the time to hit "," then a direction accounts for the delay you'd get from holding a movement key, and the speed of which you move afterwards is identical.

Is there any way to remove the approximate one second delay before moving when holding a movement key?

Discussion / Most versatile weaponry and trait build?
« on: July 10, 2010, 17:20 »
I was wondering what weapon classes were considered to be the "best" when it comes to versatility and what traits help further compliment that versatility? I was thinking something like EE -> EE -> Int -> Int -> SoaB -> SoaB etc. combined with automatics like the Chaingun and Plasma Rifle, carrying cells for your plasma rifle also ensures that if you run into a BFG9K or BFG10K you'll have plenty of ammo for it to make the rest of the game smooth sailing. I played awhile back before the most recent update, back around 0.9.9 or before that I believe. So I just started playing again but I'm pretty bad... I try to get a build going like the one mentioned above but can never manage to find the Chaingun in Hell's Arena (after beating round 1) before getting wrecked by the 2nd wave's Cacodemons. However, when I finally get lucky enough to have the Chaingun spawn right next to me, shit gets really crazy really fast. Tips are extremely welcome, thanks in advance.

It can't be very apparent to someone if they don't find it funny in the first place now can they? Your flawed logic is pretty funny though.

I'm locking this thread before anyone else gets butthurt.

How did I not get the "joke"? Probably because it wasn't in the least bit funny. Also, why post a serious question if the situation is supposed to be a joke?
The megasphere is a lie - that's why it's funny ;).
Also - people tend to mix both serious and ironic/jocular elements in their expressions. It's a sign of mental refinement and takes a bit of intellect and empathy to discern and comprehend.
Get used to it.

Yeah, because "the megasphere is a lie" is original content, hilarious and totally not a direct ripoff of something from Portal that wasn't funny and overused in the first place.

Not everyone has a boring sense of humor, which takes a bit of intellect and empathy to discern and comprehend, get used to it~

In fact, you don't get the Chaingun until a few levels later.

you get the chaingun on MAP03

and the super shotgun on MAP02

Now don't you feel silly?

It's not impossible, I know that. But the odds of the RNG actually spawning a tiny room full of 10 or more shotgun guys with a megasphere are extremely slim. You may as well call it impossible. The reason I said it was impossible is because it was easier to type than "(see: 0.001% chance)".

The chaingun isn't luck-based though. Generally when someone starts a new run they decide between shotguns and rapidfire weapons (unless they're doing some quirky pistol/melee build, you get the idea). On the harder difficulties you can get a chaingun on level 2 without even doing Hell's Arena, but what does the shotgun guy get on harder difficulties? Just a combat shotgun, sometimes not even that. I know I've done quite a few shotgun-only attempts on HMP and UV that have failed miserably simply because the RNG was not generous enough to give me a combat shotgun on one of the first few (~5-ish) levels.

What I'm getting at is... the combat shotgun and double shotgun don't have to be dropped randomly by an enemy, it's just an idea. However, they should definitely be easier to obtain.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. In Doom II, you find a double shotgun before you find a chaingun. In fact, you don't get the chaingun until a few levels later.

That's a highly unlikely (see: impossible) situation.

Winning with a shotgun build will be easier the next version -- shotguns are powered up.

Awesome.

A minor suggestion to further help balance out the shotgun path (mostly early on), if you don't mind -- give the Former Sergeants (shotgun guys, gray "h", etc.) a chance to drop a combat shotgun and a double shotgun (not both at the same time). Perhaps 10~20% for a combat shotgun and 5~10% for a double shotgun? I don't think it'd be too powerful since you can get a chaingun on level 2 or 3 (Hell's Arena) extremely easily (which practically carries you all the way to the end).

#1 or #2 is fine. If people want to cheat then let them cheat, it's not like DoomRL is a multiplayer game and cheaters are ruining the experience for everyone else. I really doubt anyone will cheat, to be perfectly honest. I don't think even 5% of the community would do it. Why? Because who wants to ruin their player.dat with garbage they didn't earn? Definitely not me.

If you can do #2, go for it. Otherwise, #1 is perfectly fine.

Pre-0.9.9 / [M|100%|YAAM] shotguns are pretty fun.
« on: July 26, 2009, 06:50 »
I had approximately 10 ~ 12 large medkits until near the end when I had to deal with not one, not two, not three, but four Archviles on the same map.

Is he immortal? 3 souls claim to have killed him...

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [M|88%|25|YASD] First decent shotgun run.
« on: July 25, 2009, 18:50 »
Because this was before I knew where and how to get the BFG, I thought it would be a random drop so I always lugged around some power cells in case I found one.

By "shotgun run" I meant that I'd be using shotguns almost exclusively as well as a shotgun build instead of a CG/rapidfire build.

Ah! I'll try that, thank you.

EDIT: When I change the color of Screen Text, it works until I move and then the pistols reset to their normal color, the text at the top and bottom however does not.
