Discussion / Re: Importing saves from other versions
« on: November 01, 2010, 12:06 »
I decided that even if I could import my 0.9.9 stats into 0.9.9.1, certain changes (the Hellgate in particular) meant I would feel deeply dishonest doing so.

0.9.9.1 / Re: [M|AoLT|95%|22|YASD] I hate my life.
« on: November 01, 2010, 12:02 »
My half-guess, half-experience is that the easiest non-Bronze badges are:
  • Scavenger Silver - the Vaults can spawn on ITYTD, so just crack one of the side vaults with a suitable weapon and you're sorted.
  • Scavenger Gold - pure luck, but you can grind ITYTD ammochain games for it.
  • Reaper Silver - if you've got an HPD, the only remotely challenging part of this is that you aren't playing on ITYTD.
  • Brick Silver - another one that's mostly down to luck.
  • Lava Silver - likewise - if you have some envirosuit packs and the right build/arsenal, there's no great challenge here.
  • Strongman Silver - an ITYTD knife win is almost certainly easier than any HNTR challenge, and possibly even easier than an HNTR Ammochain win, due to the ridiculously huge difficulty shift going from ITYTD to HNTR.
  • Shottyman Silver - AoSh is arguably easier than a non-challenge Shotgun game, since you get the basic shotgun at the start of the game, making it pretty easy to get the entry level's medkits without much pain or aggro no matter what layout you draw.
  • Berserker Silver - Once you're past the "starting a melee run not on ITYTD" initial hump, getting to 15 is not that bad on HNTR. (No, I haven't done it on 0.9.9.1 yet.)
  • Marksman Silver - I haven't done it in 0.9.9.1 yet, but I did pull it off in 0.9.9.
  • UAC Silver - HMP Ammochain is probably easier than a lot of HNTR challenges. (I haven't done it in 0.9.9.1 yet, but I did pull it off in 0.9.9.)
  • Arena Silver - You can spam UV games in pursuit of this one. With correct Arena tactics and a bit of luck, it's perfectly doable. (I haven't done it yet, but I have managed to get to the last wave, where you get two Barons.)
For reference, Lightfoot Silver is really quite harsh, since you have to complete AoLT on Hurt Me Plenty to get it.

Requests For Features / Re: A Bunch of Little Stuff

It doesn't help that the default palette for Windows console windows is shockingly poor. Dark blue is too dark, dark grey and light grey are too bright.

Bug Reports / minor bug: colouring glitch on info screen
« on: October 07, 2010, 12:43 »
On the DoomRL Player Info (Challenges) page, the word "level" in the Hard and Very Hard columns (and presumably in the N! column but I haven't run an N! game in challenge mode to confirm) is printed in white (if there's an entry in the previous column) or grey (if the previous column reads 'none') rather than in yellow as in the Medium column.

Discussion / Re: A bit of a slump.
« on: October 05, 2010, 17:04 »
On reflection, it's not so much that I hate the Hellgate itself, as that I hate the Hellgate being level 15. I disapprove of the mid-game boss being harder than the standard endgame boss (easier than the bonus boss, though...)

Discussion / A bit of a slump.
« on: October 05, 2010, 15:14 »
Trying to decide what to try next, given the following:
  • There's nothing left to do on ITYTD that would feel like any kind of actual achievement (I've got Scavenger Gold and Strongman Silver, after all).
  • I'm quickly getting tired of levels 1-3 on HMP (out of 25 HMP games on 0.9.9.1, only five games got further than L3; the tally of deaths includes two cases of "zoned into L2 in the middle of a lost soul room")
  • Beating HNTR with Ammochain wouldn't feel like much of an achievement given that I've beaten it on AoSh.
  • I don't really enjoy melee games on HNTR and above because of the dependency on giftdropping.
  • My pistol technique breaks down a short way into Hell on HNTR. (Ao100 best: 19, with pistols. AoMr best: 19.)
  • AoLT/AoI/AoH/AoP/AoRA/AoPc/AoMs don't appeal. (Ao100 does, partly because it doesn't have the Hellgate, but it's a bit on the long side...)
  • I hate the Hellgate level and am sometimes tempted to go back to 0.9.9 so that I don't have to put up with it.

173
I carefully didn't mention how to exploit the LOS mechanics :)

And of course, that's not the only exploitable mechanic. Giftdropping feels somewhere between "abuse" and "exploit" to me, partly because I think of formers as basically zombies-with-guns and so the thought of them seeking medicine is horribly jarring.

174
I think it's very much worth mentioning this:

The AI's tactics can be turned against it, partly because the line-of-sight mechanics have irregularities that allow you to do some very odd things with bullets. Observe, internalize, and prosper.

175
I'd been playing a fair few games where "sprint past 'em" was very firmly the correct plan, that's all - and I can't remember whether I'd hit CL:7 to have MAD at that point.

Before him 122 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 98 of those were killed.
And 12 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 12 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
9 killed the bastard and survived.
2 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This run really demonstrated the power of sheer dumb luck. Early onyx armor. Four power mods in total (my combat shotty was also powermodded). Supercharge sphere on level 14. Assault shotgun. Homing phase device to get Reaper Silver. As I was getting to about level 20 or so and getting nervous about my ammo supply, I had two levels in a row with former sergeant packs. Then I just circlestrafed the C with the powermodded double.

Don't ask why I was still lugging those tech mods around. Probably because I had no real inventory pressure thanks to wearing onyx(P).

Well, the problem has resolved itself.

Took a shot-to-nothing Angel of Shotgunnery run to add one more Bronze... and won, complete with a homing phase device to get Reaper Silver with. Power modded Onyx Armor is a very relaxing thing to have.

Getting Berserker Gold means getting past the Hellgate. This appears to currently be beyond my ability unless I get stupidly lucky or play on ITYTD :(

Obviously Scavenger and Strongman are the first two; which one would you suggest I go for next?

The options I'm considering are UAC (I managed it in 0.9.9 on an Ammochain build; I'm pretty sure a ridiculous amount of dumb luck was involved), Berserker (ditto; has the added merit under the new regime of not requiring me to get past the Hellgate level), and Reaper.
