Well there's a new version just about here so it was time to retire my 9.9.1 Hell Baron Major

Pretty generic Ammochain run here with exception of the latest Diamond badge which should really be a Gold, I say

Also this version has a very interesting 'crafting' system but unfortunately, I wasn't able to figure out how to get started despite WK2 and finding at least 4 mods of each type + firestorm pack. I ended up just modding out everything like in the past versions. The old way still works fine!

Requests For Features / Minor Badge/Mortem Enhancement?

What would everyone think about the mortems displaying badges that were fulfilled during the run but had already been awarded previously?

I don't think that the player.dat need track the number of times a badge gets awarded, but I think it would make the mortems much more comparable if we can see everything that was done in a single run

This idea came up because in my office we have DoomRL on a shared computer but of course most of the bronze/silver badges are already awarded. Thus my lesser skilled coworkers really never see some of the things they've achieved and cannot really compare the quality of a run between each other.

Repeat awards can be distinguised in the mortem with parenthese at the bottom, for example:

It was a little slow and boring because I did not find one single unique or exotic (unless you consider the BFG and chainsaw exotic)

Requests For Features / Extensions for the new player

All of the veteran players know that once you hit Sergeant Major rank, all modes have been unlocked and it's all badge farming until we give up. For the true elite, everything can be unlocked in under a dozen games...so this is an idea to extend the early game experience through adding more locked doors AND forcing/rewarding different styles of gameplay

Ranks are earned on the basis of individual game achievements (skill). Purpose: Unlocks Challenge Modes

Creature ranks are awarded primarily on endurance, you have to play a LOT to get these. Purpose: None (yet). I think these should unlock HMP, UV, and N!, but that's not the main point of this post.

Introducing...
Experience ranks. Earned through breadth of gameplay. Purpose: Unlock Traits and Uniques! Yes - you have to play the game for a little while before defaulting to that MAD build and Jackhammering your way to Diamond badges in your 3rd game. These new gameplay enchancements are far too great to fall in to the hands of a newbie marine!


Green
Exotics, but no uniques!
No advanced or master traits!
The challenge here is creating successful builds on basic traits only - This is what we did prior to 0.9.8.7

Rookie
All Advanced Traits unlocked
Unlocks 5 uniques

Seasoned
All Master traits unlocked
Unlocks 5 more uniques

Veteran
Unlocks all but the most overpowered uniques (see Slyphs guide)

Elite
All traits and uniques (save JackHammers and DragonSlayers for this)

What would this look like
"MaiZure, level 12 Elite Imp Sergeant, sacrificed himself to kill the Cyberdemon"

Ranking up should be based on breadth of gameplay as measured by medals and weapon-type kills. I this because as I read my current player file (new as of this recent beta), I have 7000 kills (118 melee, 1114 pistol, 400 chain, and over 4000 shotgun). I am clearly not a breadth player and shouldn't deserve the title of Elite (not to mention the right to use all the master traits and uniques)

Green -> Rookie
At least 250 kills in each of Pistol, Shotgun, and Rapid
Earn 3 different medal types

Rookie -> Seasoned
At least 1000 kills in Pistol, Shotgun, Rapid, Melee
Earn 6 different medal types

Seasoned -> Veteran
One win on all weapon-type challenges (AoMr, AoSG, AoB)
9 different medal types

Veteran -> Elite
You've won all weapon-type challenges on UV (or N!?)
12 different medal types


Now with the Creature rank recommendation above AND the recommendation that only ONE challenge mode is unlocked per rank instead of 3 or 4, we can create a more interesting game dynamic...You simply can't rise to the top of any of the ranks without addressing the others. For example:

Most can't dream of chasing platinum+ badges without master traits, so you have to take care of skill ranks. But you must also chase creature ranks to be able to access UV. Deferring the uniques will make it a little more difficult to chase badges from the start also.

When you reach Elite, gameplay will be exactly as we know it right now and shouldn't change any balance up to that point. What I hope this type of system would do is promote diverse playing styles before we simply jump in to badge farming. We also find a use for the medals and creature ranks

A few more considerations:
*This concept could probably be collapsed entirely under the currently unused creature ranks we have instead of creating this whole new rank system.

*Maybe traits could be spread over all five skill ranks and uniques should be unlocked entirely within creature ranks. Maybe you can find them but you cant use them until you reach the rank.


A final note on rebuttals:
The 0.9.9 badge enhancement was great for DoomRL veterans because it added new and exciting challenges for advancement. This system, on the contrary, does not add anything new and can easily be called "boring" and "tedious" because it's essentially forcing us to unlock the things that we've already been playing with for years!

But this system was not developed for veterans - it's for the thousands of people who are going to be coming down the road with the graphics version in the next 6 months...These people have never seen advanced traits, or master traits, or the best uniques, and I think we can really entice them to stick behind the keyboard longer if we extend what we already have in place as well as thinking of new and intersting ideas.

DoomRL was fun back in v0.9.8.5 and, I think earning your way to the latest features can be just as rewarding for a brand new player!

I know, I know - I usually never touch this rapid fire stuff but there is a good reason it worked out.
I had infinite ammo (MAc) as well as infinite armor (onyx armor). I guess even I could manage it under those circumstances!

I've been avoiding it so long and did so much side playing that when I did win, I went straight from Major to General, skipping Colonel (so I didnt get to see the requirements). Maybe thats a sign that AoP should be put as a Colonel challenge rather than a Major challenge

Am I the first Cacodemon General? Seems most folks here are already Mancubus+ by the time they make General. My problem is that I hate AoB so much that I've never tried to kill 5 Mancs in Melee.

I'll make that my next goal.

So the only way I would ever win on UV is play 100% defensive. TaN & Ironman all the way. I chose shotguns because ammo management is much easier and I don't have to worry about accuracy. Great for shooting off in to darkness. I did not go the shottyman/reloader route though.

What really made this run work was the Jackhammer. The Necroarmor on one of the very last levels was nice too.

I had to save and quit 3 times due to distractions at work...damn those customers. The game was slow at well over an hour of total play time

This thread is for the medal specific ideas discussed in the other thread.

Here are a few concepts so please comment. The names are in keeping with the Doom/Space/Mars theme.

Killing Cybie in consecutive games:
Phobos Cross - 2 consecutive games
Deimos Cross – 5 consecutive games

% kill situations:
Shadow Cluster - Winning the game with less than 10% kills
Xenophobe Shield – Winning the game with 100% kills
UAC Star (bronze cluster) – 20 consecutive levels @ 100% (exclude special/PA/HF levels and level 1)
UAC Star (silver cluster) – 40 consecutive levels @ 100% (exclude same)
UAC Star (gold cluster) – 60 consecutive levels @ 100% (exclude same)
UAC Star (diamond cluster) – 100 consecutive levels @ 100% (exclude same)

Consecutive kills without taking damage:
Legion of Mars (2nd class) – 25 kills without taking damage
Legion of Mars (1st class) – 50 kills without taking damage
Legion of Mars (with valor) – 100 kills without taking damage

Killing multiple enemies in one turn*:
Eye of Sol – 5 enemies
Harbinger Cross – 10 enemies

*Awards are not cumulative…if you kill 10 in one turn, you don’t get the award for 5.

Speed:
UAC Commendation Medal – Win with less than 20,000 turns
Lightfoot Badge – Finishing a level in 10 turns or less


Special Situations:

Blood Fist Ribbon - Kill 100 enemies in Melee in one game
MacGyver Badge– using 15 modifications in one game. 
Demolition Badge – Destroying 750 sections of wall in one game
Gambler’s Shield – Pulling 20 different levers in a game
Scout’s Arrow – Visiting 6 special levels in one game (no win against Cybie necessary)
Aurora Medallion – Finding 3 uniques in a game (possible?)
Tyr’s Shield – Going Berserk 25 times in one game
Bravery Medal – Never putting on armor or boots in a game (must reach a hell level)
Green Sun Medal – Taking 300 HPS worth of damage in lava or toxic pools in one game
Twilight Heart – Reaching 1 HP on a particular level and SURVIVING to the next level
UAC Achievement Medal – Finishing a level with 100% kills AND not taking any damage (not level 1)
UAV Longevity Medal – Awarded for every 1000 levels finished

Kills types per game (Disabled for Ao100):
I was toying with the idea of titles (e.g. Spider-Slayer), rather than a medal..but its all the same.

Order of Arachnae – 50 arachnatrons in one game.
Order of Cerberus – Killing 25 Mancubi in one game
Order of Hel – Killing 10 Arch-Viles in one game


Bad medals:
Golden Safety Pin - Blowing yourself up with a barrel (after reaching at least character level 6?)
Black Hole Sun (haha) – Destroying a Unique

Add, subtract, delete, rename at will. The idea was to have another page on the player file that tracks all the medals awarded. This could probably be tied in to more unlockables as well.

Hey all,

Long time Doom RL player and forum lost soul, I’d like to throw some ideas out there.

This is actually more of collaborative idea list that me and a few other guys threw together. I wanted to shy away from the “kitchen sink” approach because everyone here has already suggested 1000 good ideas for uniques or challenge modes. This is more focused on fundamentals of why this game is great and how we can turn it up a notch (hopefully!)

The best feature of DoomRL (other than the fact that…it’s DOOM and its RogueLike ;) ) is the “persistence”. Meaning the more you play, the more your efforts carry over in to the next game, and the more you get out of it…the game is not a one shot deal. I’m sure everyone here has been through the “just one more game…one more rank…” at 3AM syndrome. The unlockables that came out a year ago were a great way to go. The best features will reinforce the idea: The more you play, the more you should want to play.

So lets get down to it…
Gamers love performance metrics/measurements. Pick just about any game in any genre and it’s the performance metrics that people love to improve and show off. In DoomRL we love our frags, we love our ranks, we love the challenge modes we unlock, and we love the Post-Mortems (like all RL games). Gamers are statisticians in their own world!
Let’s add a few dimensions of stats to DoomRL and from there we can add a host of new features (if practical). The goal here should tie the statistics back to the idea of a “persistent” game profile. We should want to improve them!

Some ideas include:

*Uniques/Artifacts discovered – Each game already tracks the artifacts discovered in that game. Make this a profile variable for use in a future possible feature discussed below.

*Consecutive Kills – A counter for each game that tracks the number of kills you have made without taking damage. Basically a ‘badass’ metric that will complement a BFG user ;). When you take damage, the counter resets, but the highest number it ever reaches is saved and there should be a profile maximum.

*Weapon usage – Track the weapons fired/used to determine “favorite weapon” at the end of every game. Make profile variables to determine how many times each weapon is tagged as a favorite across the careers of all our Doom marines.

*Level Upgrades – Track which upgrades the player chooses at each level. For instance, my profile know how many times I’ve chosen Eagle Eye. An example of a feature based on these stats is below.

*Levels Completed – Simple variable to track how many levels the player has finished. Some gameplay enhancements can be based off of the number of levels the player has survived in total. This would probably not be directly reported to the player in any stats screen, but it would be reserved for longevity rewards.


Once we have all these metrics, we can translate them in to meaningful game enhancements beyond simply throwing the stats back to the player. Here are a few of the simple ideas:

*Add a new page to the profile of the character that lists the Uniques/Artifacts that they have discovered over their many lifetimes of marines. If they haven’t discovered any, then have a big list of ----Not Discovered---- spaces on that page. I know if I saw a big list of stuff I haven’t done yet, I would definitely keep playing until that list is filled out! Perhaps you could bring up the stats of each item IF you have discovered them as well

*To take the above idea further…If the game tracks that a player has discovered a particular unique many times (say 5) , then this artifact can be guaranteed to spawn in Hell’s Armory – This would give the armory a more comprehensive purpose as well. Any player that has discovered the minigun 5 times is probably on his 600th game anyway and is reaching for the highest ranks/skill levels. This can help close the gap for advanced players who feel that the game gets ridiculously impossible to advance at a point.

*Medal system. If we have performance statistics, then medals are a good way to reward people who push the limits. Seriously, if someone score 30 consecutive kills as mentioned above, they should get a medal. A medal case can be another interesting screen in the player profile and would definitely be something we could share with others on the forum. Longevity medals can tie in with the levels completed statistic mentioned above. I know you guys can probably think of MANY different circumstances that deserve a medal (beating cybie in consecutive games, getting 100% kills, etc). Obviously Save-scumming will be an issue here.

*Favorites. We’re now tracking favorite weapons and favorite level upgrades, so lets put this to use. Lets say a person has been tagged as having shotguns favorited 50 times over his career. At this point it would make sense that this marine should start with a benefit to using shotguns (say a faster reload or fire rate). This person is probably already an advanced rank and is trying to get to the top. Likewise anyone who has picked TaN as a level upgrade say 500 times (over 150 full games), should probably start the game with TaN level 1 from now on. There should be minimum standards to prevent someone from just leveling once and dying to pump up these stats.



Some of these ideas may put the game balance in question, especially when we’re talking permanent upgrades to ‘new games’. It seems like a good idea to reward players who continue to play over and over again. A lot of my friends out here confirm that the game “bogs down” or progression gets so slow that they stop playing until the new version comes out…and even then they cant access new features because they cant seem to unlock them without resorting to save-scumming.

The whole idea here guys is to strengthen the ties between each individual game played to the game as a whole, much like when the rank/skill system was introduced. The more you play, the more you should be rewarded.

These are only a small list of the ideas but this post is getting waaay to long so please share your thoughts!
