*whew*

After my failure in taking on the 100 levels as an Ammochainer, I decided to try again. I went for much the same build as the last major run, only this time, I threw in some levels of Ironman as well. The big break I got came in the form of a Red Armor and an Onyx Mod in an early vault, which gave me some indestructible protection right out of the gate and freed up my inventory for ammo and health, as well as proving to be the foundation of my best run to date. My first automatic weapon was a chaingun, which I turned into a gatling gun in the final level of Phobos, which was a real ammo hog until such time as I hit Ammochain again, and from there on, it was all good. My other weapon, which I used sparingly, was a super shotty that notably saw use against a Pain Elemental and its army of Lost Souls.

I got the plasma gun some time after, which I used until such time as I got my hands on a Laser Rifle. I absolutely loved that thing, as it was much more accurate than the two plasma guns I modded, which I soon left behind, along with the gatling gun in time. I got hold of the Jackhammer again, but quickly learned to my annoyance that it doesn't work with Ammochain despite being an automatic weapon, and burns through a whole mag of shells quickly, so needless to say, it got left behind on the level I found it in. The Necroarmor stuck around for a while, but didn't see use.

Unlike the last major run that I went through, the two levels of Whizkid I put down paid off big, as I put together enough mods to turn the laser rifle into a burst cannon. I also began improving my armor, first putting in a power mod to raise the armor's protection to 6, then putting in a nano mod, and then finally another power mod in order to assemble my first-ever Cybernano Armor. After power-modding both the cannon and the armor, I was virtually unstoppable -- my burst cannon was tearing apart most monsters in one or two bursts, and the protection afforded me by my cybernano armor meant that most of the monsters didn't have a prayer in Hell of taking me down -- in particular, the Revenants, usually one part of the VMR triad, were being one-shotted with one burst, with their rockets not doing all that much to me on the occasion that they were allowed to fire. In addition, I maxed out Ironman and Badass so that I could keep myself above 100 in health whenever possible, which further increased my survivability against the monsters. In fact, about the closest I came to getting ended again was a mess of fucking spiders and a Mancubus that a fucking Vile kept resurrecting on me, and which forced me to take cover and heal before luring them out, killing them, and taking out the Vile.

Throughout the run, I have come to fucking loathe Viles. Their fire attack wasn't much to write home about with my level of armor protection, but their true aggravation came in the form of resurrecting the real bitch enemies (the encounter above being a prime example) that I needed to kill quickly -- often as fast as I was putting them down. As a result, there was no mercy to be had on any of the Viles that I came across, with the cannon putting them down in two bursts. And I had to kill a lot of the things especially later on, along with Mancubi, Hellknights, Revenants, spiders, and Barons of Hell.

The reason this isn't a YAAM run is because on several occasions (such as that one cave full of nightmare spiders), the last enemies were places I couldn't access without eating damage from the lava or otherwise couldn't find. Among other things, it prompted two uses of the Thermonuclear Bomb and stairdiving before it went off, including the final level, where I couldn't find that last damned nightmare spider for the life of me and there was a bomb right there in the level. That being said, this is my very first Centurial win, and I didn't do too badly at all.

My goal on this run was to get a good Ammochainer, and for the most part, I succeeded with flying colors, with this being probably the farthest I've gotten yet on Ao100. I could probably have picked up Hellrunner and Dodgemaster instead of going for Whizkid, but I had my mind on assembling some kick-ass gear. My main weapon for most of the run was the plasmagun, though until I got my hands on it, the chaingun was my weapon of choice, and got busted out when I was running low on plasma ammo.

The main highlight of the run was getting my hands on both the Lava Armor (which regens when you walk or stand in the lava) and the Enviroboots (which basically allow you to walk in the bad with impunity), which resulted in one happy Bonedaddy. Words cannot express how much I love not having to worry about getting my ass fried or melted standing or walking in the bad, and with these shiny new boots, the acid and lava barrels weren't a big concern anymore aside from destroying items, where normally I would have to pick my way through them and hope some asshole wouldn't come along and blow them. Combine this with the fact that there was plenty of lava to be had in Hell, and I didn't have to worry about armor for the most part anymore. I did have to worry about health though, especially in bad areas where there were lots of fucking VMR (I especially hate the Mancubi because they like to knock your ass around with their fucking rockets). I also had a very kick-ass weapon in my plasma gun, which I wanted to make a burst cannon with the mods I had put on it, and which combined with my Ammochain build took most things down in one to three bursts. I also had an eye on assembling a backup assault rifle with the spare chaingun off one of the captains I killed. The reason this wasn't a 100% run was Level 33 with its deathly chill that was sapping my health. There was about one monster left in the map, and with my health at 70s and dropping, I wasn't interested in killing myself trying to find the bastard.

Level 36, the level that ended me, was another big bridge level with lots of viles, mancubi and barons. In the heat of battle, I noticed that my armor was getting dangerously low, and I was worried about the armor getting destroyed (which was rather silly of me in retrospect given it's one of the few armors that can't have that done to it by battle damage), so I booked it across the lava to get myself back into armor before killing some more monsters. Unfortunately, I wasn't paying close enough attention to my health, so when I ended up getting low on armor again, I tried booking it across the lava again, only for a Baron to follow me and fireball me to oblivion. Dodgemaster would have been a good help in that situation, but I didn't have it. End of run.

Post Mortem / Re: [M|86%|4|YASD] Watch Your Step
« on: August 02, 2017, 08:48 »
I've made mistakes like that in my day. I didn't get assmunched by a demon on teleport, but I did get taken out by a shotgunner that way. I also died once after throwing two switches, one which filled the room with acid and another which filled that room with lava. YASD indeed.

19
I got my hands on the bomb in Deimos. I don't remember which level though.

I was about halfway through a Scavenger run when my power decided to blink out, erasing the run and forcing me to restart my machine and do file cleanup, which pissed me off big-time.

20
So I thought I'd get some melee practice in before trying to tackle Angel of Berserk again, and decided to roll up another melee Technician for another Dual Chainsword Murder Run. How did it go, you may ask? Well...

184 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 161 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
And 9 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 13 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
3 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
3 killed the bitch and survived.
7 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

For the majority of Phobos, I primarily relied on the old reliable boomstick for killing monsters while ranking up Hellrunner and Dodgemaster and starting to rank up Brute. The main times I used the Chainsaw, which I grabbed in the Chained Court, were when I was berserk. I also racked up a stockpile of armor like I usually do when on melee runs, and managed to get myself a nice stockpile of health too. My main weapon against the Barons in the Phobos Anomaly was the tactical shotgun, which I created for the umpteenth time in Phobos Lab. Throughout the entire first episode, I did not pick up a single Combat Knife, a mistake that I would soon rectify in Deimos.

Early on in Deimos, I remembered that I was on a Malicious Blades run, which meant a DUAL CHAINSWORD MURDER RUN, so I picked up two combat knives as I came along. I also had the fortune early on to come across a Nano Pack, which I used on some Red Armor that I found. When not used for major assemblies, Nano Packs regenerate any armor that it's used on, which is pretty damned godly. This plus the habit I picked up of keeping myself healed beyond 100% through the use of health globes kept me alive through a good number of fights, and as I found Bulk Mods, I used them on my knives. The Containment Area saw me using Dodgemaster to take on the Hellknights and hitting Malicious Blades once again, taking my chainsaw to the last few Hellknights as my shells were running low. The City of Skulls saw me taking the chainsaw to the lot of the Lost Souls headed my way and stocking up on shells once again. The level immediately after saw me finding my first power mod and assembling my first chainsword, though I wouldn't pick up my second until the Halls of Carnage, after which I assembled my second chainsword, went crazy on every Caco and assmunch demon in sight, grabbed the BFG, waited for the lava to kill everything I didn't kill and bugged out. Words cannot express how much I love regenerating armor, and such was this armor's ability to regenerate that I ended up dumping nearly all my other armor, only saving a blue suit in case some bad luck ended up costing me the good suit. Along the rest of the way, I picked up the bomb, which got me set for endgame. I reached the Cyberdemon while my health was boosted to near max, and made a beeline for the big guy, wading through his rockets and his claw attack, and just tearing the living fuck into him until he was dead.

Hell opened up by pitting me against a lonely arachnotron that went down with little problem, and from then on, it was pretty much full-time chainsword mayhem in which I loaded up on health via health globes and soulspheres and played pretty much like a berserker. Getting a Berserk Pack was especially a joy, as this meant that most things died in one hit when I caught up to them. My most awesome moment was the start of one level where I had to fight two Viles, one Mancubus, four Cacos and a Revenant nearly at once -- a situation that would have rendered me fucked on most other runs. The Viles went down first, as they were lined up single file to the right of the vault containing the Cacos, which got opened when the Mancubus and Revenant cut loose. After gauging my situation, I downed a health pack and ended up going to town on the rest, killing them within seconds of each other each. After killing everything, I did an encore by taking apart eight or nine assmunch demons that went after me, killing them all with one hit each. The Lava Pits were entered on an Invulnerability, where I booked it across the lava, killing any Lost Souls that got in my way, then went after every shotgunner and other asshole standing before grabbing up some envirosuits and chasing down each of the stray souls I passed, killing the Lava Elemental and grabbing the Lava Element. The last level before Spidey was a Demon and Caco cave which also had an invulnerability, sparing me from having to use the Lava Element's invulnerability to nuke Spidey to hell.

Unlike my last Malicious Blades fight with him, Carmack didn't last long, sending a few Lost Soul summons my way before I decided to go after him like I went after the Cyberdemon, ignoring his summons and getting right in his face and hack-and-slashing away, not even giving him time to teleport away. He was only able to get up to Barons before I fucking eviscerated him.

Until now, I've not done a successful pistol run in DoomRL. There's plenty stacked against one -- starting pistols being pretty weak even with Son of a Gun, Whizkid being required for the better pistol assemblies (which takes perks away from an otherwise solid Scout or Marine build) and a noticeable lack of good pistols (with the ones that do show up being completely luck-based). And my pile of dead would-be pistoleros, many of them Scouts and Marines going for Gun Kata and Bullet Dance, are testament to all these things, often getting killed early before ever realizing their full power. But now, I've managed to pull my first successful pistol run.

--------------------------------------------------------------

For this run, I wanted a Technician. Technicians have several advantages right out of the gate -- aside from turning every Computer Map into a Tracking Map which I covered in previous posts, Whizkid is a free perk for them, whereas everyone else has to plop two perks into Finesse, which not a lot of pistol builds use. Unfortunately, Sharpshooter requires a lot of preliminary perking to actually get -- Son of a Gun and Eagle Eye both have to be at 3 in order to unlock it, which means you have to be at Level 7 at the least to get your hands on the Master. It's also the only master that doesn't believe in Guns Akimbo, which suited me just fine, as one of my failed pistol runs, on a Bullet Dance build, ended with me exhausting nearly all of my ammo halfway through Hell. If I'm going to be turning my pistols into an automatic weapon, I might as well go Ammochain with a damn chaingun and save a slot on my inventory.

It started off pretty nicely. I managed to get myself a stockpile of not only bullets, but armor and health packs, which proved crucial to surviving the early game. My early ranks of Son of a Gun coupled with a tech-modded pistol let me pick off zombies and imps with two or three shots each, and assmunch demons and Cacos with three to four rounds each. I doubt I would have survived the Chained Court and killed the Arena Master or the other crap in the level without my armor and health packs. I then bulk-modded another pistol using one of the mods that I found in that level, which would become my other weapon as I journeyed through. My pistols saw me through the Military Base and the Phobos Anomaly, the latter of which had me taking down the two Barons of Hell while taking a fair amount of damage in the process.

Then it was on to Deimos and the ever-hateful acid and lava barrels. I assembled the tactical boots early on for a much-needed speed boost. Hellknights took about five rounds with the pistols to put down, something I made use of during the battle in the Containment Area, which was the only major area where I used a shotgun, on the assmunch demons in the room with the 10mm ammo chain. I wouldn't fully unlock Sharpshooter until after the battle with the Hellknights, with the first Caco I put down in the next level. But while I was now doing max damage with every round I fired, my pistols were rather limited in regards to damage, especially against the fucking Mancubus (something that usually only shows up in Hell) that ended up showing up later on after clearing the Spider's Lair and knocking me around with his fucking rockets. He took fucking near the entire mag of my bulk-modded pistol to kill. So I sunk my next two points into Whizkid, and bulk-modded the tech-modded pistol in order to give it a bigger mag, which became my main weapon through Deimos. I somehow missed the next secret level (which was either the Abyssal Plains or the City of Skulls, neither of which are a good time for pistol builds anyway). The BFG from the Spider's Lair and its ammo saw use against the Cyberdemon, who took all my cell ammo before being finished off with the tech and bulk modded pistol.

As I went into Hell, I had my eye on assembling a storm bolter using the tech and bulk modded pistol I had been using. Unfortunately, there were no bulk mods whatsoever to be had in Hell, and I couldn't assemble an energy pistol with the power mod I found either due to having bulk-modded my other. But power-modding that gun resulted in a high-power pistol that was a serious upgrade from my last gun despite the four-round mag and became my main gun through Hell. I also had to pick through the fucking lava which was everywhere and fight Imps, Mancubi, Revenants and some fucking Viles as well. There was a particularly aggravating encounter involving a Vile that kept fucking reviving an Imp again and again as soon as I put it down while hiding behind a fucking wall like a fucking chickenshit before I managed to track it down and kill it dead. I also got knocked around my fair share of times, not only by the fucking Revenants and Mancubi and their fucking rockets, but also by fucking pissant shotgunners that kept blasting me as I tried to get into fucking range, which pissed me right the fuck off. The lava area was Mt. Erebus, which I entered on an Invincibility Sphere before booking it across the lava, getting knocked around by more fucking shotgunners, killing them all, and then taking my high-power pistol to the Hell Knights and then the Lava Elemental. My reward for this was not only the Lava Element, but the Lava Armor, which I wore for the remainder of my run.

The last level before Spidey had another aggravating encounter involving more fucking Mancubi and more fucking Viles, and one Vile in particular who kept resurrecting the Mancubus so he could knock me around some more. Once I killed the Vile and the Mancubus, the rest of the level was a comparative breeze. There was one last mod to be found, but unfortunately, it was an Agility mod and not a bulk mod, so I could not assemble the storm bolter. I also couldn't find the Thermonuclear Bomb during my entire run, so I had to fight Spidey once more instead of nuking her again. Fortunately, I found and got my hands on an Invulnerability just before entering Dis, so Spidey didn't have a prayer in hell of stopping me as I put bullet after bullet into her until she finally went down.

While the RNG was pretty gracious in allowing me enough health and armor to keep me alive, I didn't find enough mods to assemble what I wanted, which was rather a shame. I would have loved to see the storm bolter in action. But still, a first pistol win is a first pistol win.

22
So after a year away from the game, I decided to load up the guns and storm the gates of Hell once more, motivated just a smidgen by finally learning the secret of the Dragonslayer. I went for easy mode due to being just a tad bit rusty at this game, and I went with an Army of the Dead boomstick build. How did it go, you may ask? Read on...

141 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:

And 6 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 11 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
3 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
2 killed the bitch and survived.
6 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

It started out like a number of other runs. The shotgun was my workhorse through pretty much all of Phobos, and I built up a good stockpile of shells, armor (including a Duelist armor which I got off a particularly aggravating shotgun guy, and which I ultimately never used) and health, which I made room for by dropping my bullets and eventually my chaingun. I got my hands on Shottyman early during the assault on the Chained Court, the one that saw me fighting the Arena Master Archie. This combined with my second level of Badass (the first one being the first perk I picked up on start) got me through the rest of it with no muss, no fuss. The Military Base was the level that saw me assembling my Tac Shotgun (I've used that thing so many times, I could practically assemble it in my sleep), and after that was the Anomaly, where I did my corner-shooting thing against the Bruisers and came out almost unscathed.

Deimos saw me assembling two key pieces of armor -- the Nanofiber armor from the red armor I got at the Anomaly, and some Tactical Boots for speed. I also ended up power-modding another red suit, but stuck with the Nanofiber for most of my fights. I was reminded once again of why I love the Tac Shotgun -- there's nothing I love more than blowing zombies and Imps away in rapid succession with that thing, then unloading the whole mag into a Caco, a Hellknight or a Baron and putting its ass DOWN -- and when I got my hands on Army of the Dead, any armor the monsters were wearing wasn't much of a problem anymore. The main backpack area was the Containment Area, which saw me using the rocket launcher (with the built-in Shottyman bonus) to break through the wall before whipping out the boomstick and cleaning house on the Imps. Then I did a dumb thing and let myself get taken below 100 by a bunch of fucking assmunch demons before I could blast them all, necessitating a little pick-me-up with one of the two stimpaks that were near the entrance once I got rid of the demons and the imps before triggering the Hellknight ambush and grabbing the Backpack. I got the Firestorm Pack soon after getting my hands on the Backpack, which I used on my new Missile Launcher. Then came the Abyssal Plains, in which I very bitterly regretted not having a Double Shotgun to clear out those damned skulls with, as it ended up costing me a number of my health packs. The Halls of Carnage saw me very nearly leaving the BFG behind after getting to it, but I decided to grab it regardless, which would turn out to be a very good thing, before letting the lava take care of everything I missed. I used the missile launcher on the Cyberdemon for most of the main battle with it, just before using the boomstick to finish it.

Hell was where things really started to get aggravating. I had to pick my way through fucking lava, acid and lava barrels, not to mention having to fight asshole Hell Knights and Barons who weren't shy about exploding everything in sight, but the true aggravation wouldn't come until the Viles showed up. I hate Viles on a good day, but when you're also surrounded by other monsters that want to tear the living fuck out of you, it can make for a fucking nightmare. There were two levels in particular that saw me being fucking swarmed by Viles and Mancubi, who did their best to gangbang me with their fire and rockets before I was able to kill them all. Because of them, I lost my good power-modded armor and had to stick to the nanofiber for the rest of my run, and I was down to only a few of my health packs by the end. After Army of the Dead, my final perks went into Tough as Nails and Son of a Bitch, the former for some more armor, the latter for some more firepower.

I got the Butcher's Cleaver early on, but being as I was not a melee build, it was useless to me, and so I had to leave it behind. I dumped my chainsaw a bit later in order to make room for the Enviroboots, which I also had to leave behind at the end before Spidey. I wouldn't find the big bomb until one or two levels before Erebus, and I thankfully had an envirosuit on hand to make the trek through Ass Fry Central and blow away the skulls. I ended up using the BFG on the last Hellknight and the Lava Elemental, which destroyed everything except for Nyarlaptotep's Boots, which I equipped for the rest of the run. On the final level before Spidey, I dumped off most of what I didn't need, grabbing up all the health packs I could grab, then dumped some of my shotgun ammo (which I had a pretty sizable abundance of) in order to grab enough cell ammo to reload the BFG and have some spare on hand. After grabbing up the shotgun ammo again, it was on to Spidey.

Spidey, just like on my previous runs, got nuked straight to hell, and it was on to Carmack. My music this time around was Immediate's awesome "Tears of Blood". I opened up with the Tac Shotgun for a round of blowing through Carmack's summons and doing damage to him, but when he started summoning Hellknights, I busted out the BFG and cut loose. I needed about four big blasts with the thing to put Carmack down for good, and by the time I had to reload, Carmack was hauling out the Revenants, which meant he was on his last legs. One final BFG blast sent him into that big fucking Hellpit in the sky.

It's going to take me several more runs on both ITYTD and HNTR before I feel up for another big Berserker run. I will get the Dragonslayer one day. And when I do, my wrath against the creatures of Hell will be legendary.

23
So after a few months away, I picked up the game again. I was sorely out of practice, to the point that I was getting slaughtered over and over in Hell's Arena. So I went back to ITYTD in order to hone my skills again. It took me a handful of tries, but I took down Spidey and Carmack once more.

--------------------------------------------------------------

For this run, I wanted to go with an Ammochain build. Ammochain, as we're all pretty aware, is the only Marine Master that doesn't block the mobility perks. I started off with Son of a Bitch, picking up my first chaingun in Hell's Arena, which saw use in blasting the hell out of the early-level enemies along with my shotgun, and which saw me putting down the Arena Master pretty handily, but not without taking an ugly amount of damage. Thankfully, I had enough Blue Armor and health packs to see me through. There was an agility mod in the Court, which I promptly used on the chaingun to give it more accuracy. I also ended up making use of a Ballistic Vest, which helped me tremendously against the zombies. I also bulk-modded my blue armor for some added protection. Phobos Lab was the level that saw me getting the Combat Shotgun again, but unfortunately, there were no power-mods to be had, so I couldn't assemble the Tactical Shotgun like I usually do in the first tier.

Deimos saw me getting my hands on an onyx armor mod, which I promptly used on the red armor I picked up in the Anomaly. As I didn't need to worry about armor (aside from my boots) anymore, I ditched the other armor I had, which freed up room for health and ammo, both of which I needed, especially when I hit the Wall and grabbed the Missile Launcher and Backpack. It also saw me assembling a gatling gun, which didn't see extensive use until I finally got enough perks together to unlock Ammochain. The main skull area ended up being the Abyssal Plains, with the Agony Elemental. Thankfully, I had enough shells in my Double Shotgun to clear away all the skulls and Pain Elementals. When I got my hands on the plasmagun, it wouldn't become my main weapon until late in Deimos when I entered the Spider's Lair. I was on an Invulnerability, which allowed me to punish the little bastards with impunity right from the center of the arena. When Invulnerability wore off, there was only one spider remaining, which got finished off with little problem. Since I had enough ammo to last me a while for the plasmagun, I did not need the boomsticks anymore, so I left them, and their ammo, behind to make room for both power cells and the BFG. I never did get to assemble another tac shotgun, due mainly to one asshole Baron of Hell who destroyed the power mod I had my eye on. While I usually go for Shottyman when going for Ammochain builds, since I didn't have my boomsticks anymore, I opted to put a third level in Son of a Bitch instead, which had the effect of making my plasmagun deal more damage. I entered the Tower of Babel on a Soulsphere, so had plenty of health to tank the Cyberdemon's rockets as I blazed away with the plasmagun. I did have to use a few health packs to stay alive before I finally put him down.

The plasmagun was my main workhorse throughout Hell, and I primarily kept myself boosted through Soulspheres and Health Potions. I found the Phaseshift Boots early on, which offered much needed foot protection as I laid waste to hellknights, barons, pain elementals and the odd bonehead or two. One of the maps ended up yielding a Cybernetic Armor, but as I don't care for the armor in general and already used my onyx mod on the red armor, I left it behind. I also got my hands on the Bomb, which went immediately into my inventory. The level that came closest to ending me was Level 21, the alarm level, which had lots of lava barrels and lots of fucking Mancubi along with my first few Viles and another Baron. I think there was a Revenant too. Thankfully, I was able to kill them all and heal myself up. Unfortunately, there were no envirosuits to be had for the Mt. Erebus run, but there was a Soulsphere which I promptly grabbed before heading through. Since I could not afford to dilly-dally, I booked it through the lava until I reached land again, laid waste to the zombies and Hellknights, and grabbed two envirosuits for the trip back to deal with the flying skulls. My first suit wore off when the Lava Elemental showed up, so after introducing its ass to a lethal dose of plasma, I put on the second suit, grabbed the Lava Element and got the hell out of there. The final stretch saw me killing another Mancubus, another Baron, and another Vile along with some other lesser monsters, and thankfully didn't give me too bad of a time. So after grabbing another Soulsphere, it was off to nuke Spidey and face down Carmack again. As I prepared to enter the final area, I fired up the Undertale version of Megalovania (which plays during the final boss battle of a Genocide Run and is basically the music that lets you know you're in for a BAD TIME).

I opened up the battle with a nasty dose of plasma to go around for both Carmack and his minions, but when the Hellknights started appearing, I took the tack that won me the day in my first YAFW and busted out the BFG, first clearing out the Cacos and then unleashing on Carmack himself. I kept myself in health using the health packs I kept on reserve, and put down Carmack with a final BFG blast for my latest YAFW and YAAM. I probably could have left the missile launcher and the skulls behind for the Carmack battle, as they didn't have a lot of use aside from destroying walls so I wouldn't have to walk in the acid and the lava.

Post Mortem / [M|100%|YAAM|YAFW] The Berserker Strikes Again
« on: March 01, 2016, 22:30 »
So after my last big Berserker run almost came all the way to the end, I decided I'd try again, this time with a standard game instead of going for Angel of Berserk again. The RNG wasn't cooperative most of the time, and I got YASD'd several times in a row. But I persisted, and this time, I was able to kick ass and take names in a big way.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Just like before, I went for Vampyre, primarily relying on shotguns for ranged work until I could get my hands on the chainsaw, which I promptly bulk modded for extra damage. This time, I went for every major special level of the run. Hell's Arena went about as well as could be expected, the Chained Court had me hurting a bit near the end, and I assembled the Tactical Shotgun as I headed into the Military Base. I also found a quite early Thermonuclear Bomb, which I immediately grabbed for the inventory. I hit Vampyre earlier than usual, and it saw use against the Lost Souls and Cacos of the Anomaly, while the Tac Shotgun saw use against the Bruisers, downing one before I made the other one eat chainsaw. I also assembled my main piece of armor for a while -- the Nanofiber Red Armor.

The first major Deimos level didn't give me very many problems, and Hell's Armory allowed me to not only kick some monster ass, but bulk and power-mod two blue armors, since the Nanofiber Armor wasn't nearly as protective as I would have really liked it to be. Deimos in general was not a fun ride, and I was running low on health packs thanks largely to a certain Hell Noble ambush in the Containment Area in which Berserk didn't go off nearly as often as I really needed it to. I found the Medical Power Armor on the next level, but it didn't see a lot of use because its function is to degrade while healing you, and it's not very useful when you're in battle and taking hits.

The main Agony Elemental area this time was the Abyssal Plains, where I had to slog through Imps, Hellknights and Cacos while trying to keep my health at a manageable level and cursing the Hellknights who kept running away to throw their goddamn green fireballs like chickenshits instead of closing in for melee. The Agony Elemental battle went about as well as the last one did, and I was able to get my health to a manageable level at the end. I picked up a Blood Skull, a Fire Skull and a Hatred Skull. The Spider's Lair was the primary BFG area, and I primarily lured the Arachnotrons to my position before taking the chainsaw to their asses, though the shotgun also saw some use. Just like before, the Cyberdemon didn't last too long, and I could afford to take a hit and go berserk before introducing my chainsaw to his ugly-ass face.

The second time I entered the Unholy Cathedral, I made sure to turn on the music, as it is very kickass. After Vampyring my way through the Lost Souls and the Demons, I used my Hatred Skull to extend my berserk and duked it out with the Angel of Death, kicking his ass for a second time. This time, I left the chainsaw behind when I picked up the Longinus Spear, since I wouldn't be needing it anymore. Hell was touch and go for a while, and I used the shotgun as often as I used the spear, particularly against the Former Humans. The Blood Skull saw use in order to get my health back up to a manageable level after the damned level with the poison gas, which was very tricky. The Vaults saw me upgrading to the Assault Shotgun and leaving the Tactical Shotgun behind, and also finding the Lava Armor, which I got off a Baron of Hell that I took out with the Longinus Spear. That said, I was still rather low on Health packs by the time I got to the Mortuary, but I had enough overall health that I decided to go for it.

The Mortuary, much like Limbo, is another level where you're pretty much inundated with Archvile-resurrected demons. But this time, I was thoroughly uninterested in fucking around. I used the Fire Skull to destroy the corpses around me (which also wiped out the two Soulspheres and Red Armors in the center of the room -- c'est la vie) and deny the Viles a supply of monsters in the center to throw at me. Especially with that little measure, the Mortuary was easier on me than the living hell that was Limbo. There were no Mancubi or Revenants to give me grief unlike last time, but there were plenty of Cacos, Arachnotrons, Hellknights and Barons of Hell along with zombies and imps. Berserk and Vampyre were my primary weapons along with the Spear in laying waste to the horde of monsters, and the Soulspheres at the corners of each part of the Mortuary saw use in keeping me alive through the battle. Several of the monsters also had some much needed health packs which I immediately grabbed. When it was over, I walked away with the Angelic Armor once again.

I was in pretty good shape for the run, and only encountered one Revenant this time around, along with three Mancubi. Level 6, the level that ended me on my previous berserker run, was a level where Hell Froze Over, which I had never seen before. There were no lava pits to be found, and I could destroy pretty much all of the walls with my spear. Clearing this out was comparatively a piece of cake, and I entered the Lava Pits on an Invulnerability. I knew from my last run through the Lava Pits on HNTR that I'd be fighting Hellknights and Cacos in addition to the Lost Souls, and so I made sure to keep an Envirosuit on reserve. Thankfully, Berserk didn't have any problems in going off, so I took them down with very few problems, though I did have to double back for the other Envirosuits due to me not getting all the monsters. I put down the Lava Elemental and snagged up the Lava Element before getting the hell out of there.

The final level before Spidey saw me facing down two Viles, a couple of Hellknights and I think some Former Humans. On any other run, I would have been screwed. But with Berserk, Vampyre and my Spear of Longinus, I made quick work of all nine of the monsters with no muss, no fuss. The only problems I had near the end were a couple of Arachnotrons from afar, which I decided to break out the Missile Launcher for. While I thought I would need the Lava Element, it turns out that there was an Invulnerability in the level, which I used just before entering Dis. I was also one percent away from Level 13.

After Spidey got nuked to hell, it was on to Carmack. This time, I put on the Angelic Armor, which raised my protection and my DPS to the max. Carmack and his monsters did not stand a chance, especially once Berserk went off. He could only get to the point of summoning Cacos before I did enough damage to put him down and rack up my first Full Win on HNTR. The Spear of Longinus and the Angelic Armor really do go well together and the Spear is one of the most powerful weapons in the entire game (the others being Azrael's Scythe and the Dragon Slayer, which I've not gotten my hands on yet).

25
Well done. Melee mortuary/limbo always sucks, good job to clear there in your first melee run.
Considering this was my first time going through that literal pit of hell, I was not ready for just how many of these fuckers there were. The Mancubi and the Arachnotrons gave me the most problems by far, as the heavy fire the bastards were bringing to bear made it difficult to even move.

Wasn't badass enough to protect you from being knocked back by revenants? Aww...
The lava contributed more to ending me than the boneheads, to be honest, though the Revenants did put out a nasty bit of damage -- there wasn't an envirosuit to be had on that level, and while I could have used the envirosuit I had with me, I needed it for Erebus. One of the biggest downsides to a pure melee build is having to eat damage when you're faced with assholes like these, and I didn't exactly have the option of luring them across the lava -- only the ass-munch demons are stupid enough to charge across under such circumstances. And Revenants cannot miss, meaning both impact and splash damage. If I had access to a ranged weapon, it would have been a good time to whip it out and take them out, but again, Angel of Berserk. And I didn't have the option of healing through the firestorm because thanks to Limbo, I had only the two health packs left, which I grabbed on the level before this. There's frankly a lot of stuff I should have done, but again, overconfident stupidity.

Also, I was practically swimming in mod packs by the end of the run, and at least one opportunity to create a Nanofiber Armor was open to me, which would have helped things in Limbo, but one, I forgot about that opportunity, and two, Nanofiber slows you down without Whizkid to add an Agility Mod to the armor, which really hurts if you use Red Armor -- and if you're going Whizkid, you're frankly better off with Nanofiber Skin Armor, which can't be destroyed and retains your original protection, provided the RNG is kind enough to give you a Nano Pack, which didn't happen on this run.

26
So after I went through the game again on an Ammochain build and destroyed Carmack for the third major time on ITYTD, I thought I'd try my hand at one of the Angel Challenges on HNTR. I have tried Angel Challenges before with little to no success, nearly always getting YASD'd before even getting close to the end of the first episode. This time, I went for Angel of Berserk, and what started as a game of hide and seek and scavenge with the zombies turned into one of my biggest damned runs through the game thus far, one that took me all the way to Hell. And even though I didn't make it all the way, this is the farthest I've ever gotten on a higher difficulty than my usual.

--------------------------------------------------------------

My first order of business was picking a class. While I could have tried my luck with another Malicious Blades Technician, this was Angel of Berserk, and in my mind, the only proper way to run through it was with a berserker. So I chose a Marine, with the intention of getting Berserker, which turns you berserk after taking a set amount of damage or killing particularly powerful enemies, and then Vampyre, which gives you health back with every melee kill. So with that in mind, I ventured into Phobos.

I got in the habit of giftdropping and luring very, very early in the game in order to smoke out gunmen and imps so I could knife them to death. I quickly determined that throwing knives was not going to be a very viable strategy, so I stuck with luring and stabination. I steered WELL the fuck clear of Hell's Arena -- fighting Demons, Cacos and possibly some Hellknights with only my knife, especially this early on in the game, was suicide, and I knew it. Keeping armor intact was always an issue, and any armor I could find, I grabbed and threw in inventory. I also threw in just about every health pack I could get my hands on -- like armor, health was always an issue. Somehow, I managed to survive long enough to make it to the Chained Court, where I got my hands on my first chainsaw and my first taste of Berserk. There were four packs to use, so health wasn't much of an issue in slaying the hell out of all of the zombies and the Cacos behind the walls. Over time, I built up a stockpile of health and armor, along with a number of mod packs. When I got to the Phobos Lab, I stockpiled a good number of health packs and armor and assembled tactical boots for speed.

Phobos Anomaly was where I leveled up and unlocked Berserker. The big Caco and Lost Soul ambush was dealt with in true berserker fashion, first slaying the Lost Souls and then going after the Cacos, who went down in two or so hits with the chainsaw. After mopping them up, it was time to take on the Bruisers. First I let them see me and made my way to the corner where I shotgunned them to death on earlier runs. This time, I busted out the chainsaw and tore right into them, and as I took damage, I went berserk and tore them apart. After healing up, I took the red armor with me and got the hell out of there.

Level 1 of Deimos saw me bulk-modding not only my chainsaw, but also my set of red armor to make it more durable as I battled through imps, lost souls and zombies and collected more health packs. Then I went into Hell's Armory for the first time. Hell's Armory is an area that is not available on an ITYTD run. It saw me carefully picking my way through, taking down zombies, imps, demons, Lost Souls, and my first major spiders. Halfway through the area, I leveled up again, unlocking Vampyre. The shambler was dealt with through careful corner-work, and ended with me going berserk and ending him. Hell's Armory is really more useful for non-melee characters, as I found not only an Assault Shotgun, but the Anti-Freak Jackal which I recognized from Hellsing, but I did work up a respectable stockpile of armor from the place. I also found schematics for plasmatic shrapnel, which I did not take with me either.

I came to know and love Vampyre through the next few levels. More kills means more health means more chances for Berserk to go off, which synergized wonderfully. The chainsaw was my workhorse through much of Deimos, though I ran into a problem that I did not have in my earlier runs -- I had no way to destroy walls, meaning more often than not, I had to slog through acid or lava in order to get where I needed to go. This inability to destroy walls was why I gave the Containment Area a pass -- while I could conceivably have made my Chainsaw a Piercing Blade, the Backpack is not worth it for a melee character. So after picking and zerking my way through more levels, I went into the City of Skulls.

City of Skulls in higher difficulties is much different from ITYTD. Not only do you have to deal with Lost Souls, but also Pain Elementals and eventually an Agony Elemental. While this would be overwhelming for a pistol build or even a rapid-fire build, Berserker + Vampyre = a very badass run in which I was at 200% by the end of it. I soon capitalized on this by picking up my third level of Brute and my second level of Badass, meaning I could keep the health I got from Vampyre with no decay. At one point, I entered into Invincibility mode before entering a level and just completely wrecked the crowd of enemies surrounding me. I passed up the Halls of Carnage for the simple reason that the BFG is useless for an Angel of Berserk melee character. So on I went to the Tower of Babel and the Cyberdemon. With the armor I had on and my health, I elected to simply tank the rocket Ol' Cyber Head threw my way, go berserk, and just chainsaw his ass to death. By the time I got to Hell, I was doing quite well for myself. I had a way to replenish my health, a source of nasty damage, and even more damage and resistance once I went BERSERK, which meant I didn't need to use my health packs as often.

The Unholy Cathedral was my first major special level in Hell and one of the major highlights of this run. Guns don't work in the Cathedral, but since they didn't work period for me on my Angel of Berserk run, this was primarily another run for me. The first major wave was Lost Souls, which I took care of with little problem. Next was the Demons, which I also tore through with little problem once I went Berserk. Finally, I fought the Angel of Death, Chainsaw vs. Scythe, and TOOK HIS ASS DOWN. For my efforts, I got my hands on the Longinus Spear, which replaced my chainsaw as my main weapon of asskicking, and is quite capable of one or two-shotting most foes, especially in Berserk mode.

The next level saw me completely wrecking pretty much every last fucking demon in sight. With the Spear of Longinus in hand and my current build, not even Viles and Barons of Hell stood a chance against me now. In my head, Battle Beast's "Madness" (which like a lot of Battle Beast's songs is based on the Berserk manga) was playing through my head as I tore through the hordes of Hell. On the minus column, pretty much all of my armor was taking a beating, requiring me to swap armor often. I bypassed the Vaults because those need the Arena Master's Staff to open, and as I explained earlier, fighting the Arena Master requires going through Hell's Arena, which is suicide for pure early-game melee. Most of the stuff in there was ranged only anyway, so even if I used the special on the Spear, which I only found out about later, it would have been a waste of time and armor. The acid level kinda threw me for a bit, and I had thoughts of chucking my chances for a YAAM run by just booking it through. But I stuck through and tore through the horde, then let the acid take care of the bastards I missed much like a Halls of Carnage run before getting out.

The main highlight of the next few levels was going up against Viles and Revenants, including one that kept coming back until I killed the Vile that was bringing him back. I also ended up finding the Trigun, which again would have been awesome on any goddamn run EXCEPT Angel of Berserk, especially with the Angel Arm. I also found a Megasphere, which I promptly used to get my good armor back in much-needed shape. And then I went into Limbo.

The two words that best describe Limbo are HOLY SHIT. I have NEVER seen so many goddamn monsters in one goddamn level, and this level came very, VERY close to ending me. It didn't help much that I did a dumb thing and activated all the switches in one go early on. Between the spiders, the Revenants, the Mancubi and everything else, I needed all of my armor and all of my health packs, not to mention all of my chosen traits, just to make it out alive, kill everything and claim the Angelic Armor, simply because there was so much shit shooting at me. It was primarily a battle of attrition, putting on armor after armor after the fuckers destroyed the last, and whittling their numbers down little by little until everything was dead. By the time it was over, I had no health packs and no armor other than what I picked up in Limbo.

The next level saw me zerking on more Revenants and Viles right at the start and getting my shiny new Angelic Armor damaged, necessitating a switch to the red armor I picked up and using the Armor Shard I found to repair the thing. I finally got killed on Level 6 of Hell, with Mt. Erebus in sight, and I was debating with myself whether or not to enter, because I did not have a nuke. I did have an envirosuit though, but I nearly forgot that I even had the damned thing. This latter turned out to be crucial, as I was up against two Revenants across a river of lava that I thought I could get through. Nope. The fuckers knocked me back with their rockets, and between the rockets and the lava, not even Berserk was enough to keep me alive. End of run. This is the kind of thing that one should really look for a bridge across, but I didn't see one, and quite frankly, I was just a little bit overconfident by the end of it, and it ended up coming back to bite me. Not even mad.

My Angel of Death kill was very much my most awesome moment of this run, and resulted in my first Gold medal, which combined with my Berserker Bronze, my completion of Hell's Armory, and the Bronze, Silver and Gold Reaper Medals and the Grim Reaper Badge I got for going through hell to clear Limbo was enough to get me to Sergeant Major and the next tier of Angel challenges, including Angel of 100.

27
So just a few runs after my first successful Carmack kill, I went and did it again. This time, I went with a Malicious Blades build, the same kind of build that resulted in my first melee win against Spidey (see Dual Chainsword Murder Time).

--------------------------------------------------------------

Just like before, the boomsticks were my primary workhorse through the earlier parts of the game. I only got one combat knife on Level 2 this time, but unlike my last Malicious Blades run, I went through Hell's Arena, using my shotgun to blast through demon after demon until I emerged victorious. After getting my hands on my second combat knife on Level 3, my next few levels before the Chained Court were spent luring zombies and imps out of their hidey-holes and making with the stabbity. When I got to the Chained Court, after killing the monsters to the right, I grabbed up the Chainsaw with the free berserk and just went full tilt toward the Arena Master, tearing up everyone in my way before ending him. Then I healed up using one of my health packs before dealing with the assorted scum surrounding me. I used both of my Tech Mods to turn my Rocket Launcher into a Mini Launcher before grabbing up the Bulk Mod pack. The Chainsaw became my primary weapon through the rest of Phobos, and as I battled my way through, I got two more mod packs, a Power Mod pack and a Bulk Mod pack by the time I made it to the Phobos Lab. So I turned one of my knives into a Chainsword, and got another Power Mod when I finished up on that level, turning my other knife into a Chainsword as well. I took down both Barons by doing the corner-shooting tactic again, though this time, I was using a Combat Shotgun instead of the Tac Shotgun, so both Bruisers ate chainsaw when they got close enough for melee.

For the first part of Deimos, my main weapon wasn't the Chainswords, but the Chainsaw. I kept the Combat Shotgun in reserve for dealing with Shotgun Guys and other assorted assholes who wouldn't come out of their hidey-holes, including a few Hell Knights which did nasty damage. I passed by the Containment Area again because the Backpack isn't helpful for a melee build, even though I had a rocket launcher. The level before the Abyssal Plains, I finally got enough mods to turn my Combat Shotgun into a Tac Shotgun, which I used whenever the Chainsaw wasn't appropriate for the situation. The Abyssal Plains were the battle that saw me hit Malicious Blades again, this time right as I was beginning the battle with the Agony Elemental, which I had a nasty time with the last time I went through it with my shotgun and my melee build. With my Master trait now in effect, I pulled out both of my Chainswords and went to town on everything standing. The Chainswords can tear through Lost Souls with a single hit, Pain Elementals with several hits, and the Agony Elemental went down in five or six hits.

The second part had me going through another badass moment (namely, putting down four ass-munch demons in rapid succession with the Chainswords, when previously, I would need my chainsaw and two hits in order to put each of them down). It also saw me finding and assembling two key pieces of equipment. The first was a sniper-modded minigun, as well as a set of modded armor. The minigun saw use against the zombies during my run through the Halls of Carnage, while the Chainswords took out the Cacos and the Demons in my way. Like my last big run, I waited for the lava to take down anything I missed, though I did have to venture out and take care of the remaining demons to the right of my position. After grabbing the BFG, I got out of Dodge. Unlike the last time I fought the Cyberdemon with the Chainswords, he had plenty of time to prepare, so we slugged it out man-to-man (well, man-to-demon) until he went down.

I did not face any archviles in Hell this time around, and very few spiders. Unfortunately, I did have to tangle with a handful of Mancubi, as well as some Barons of Hell to go along with the Hellknights, along with enough zombies, imps, Lost Souls and Pain Elementals to give my chainswords a workout. It was very touch and go for a moment, particularly against several Barons and Knights that were taking off roughly 30 or so health per fireball, and my Hatred Skull got me berserk just long enough to put down one such Baron. I also came across more mods than I really knew what to do with, with very few things I could really use them on anymore, including an Onyx Armor mod that I badly wanted to use on my red armor, but being as I already had a mod on the red armor, I ended up using it on some Blue Armor I found instead. Indestructible armor is always awesome. That said, my main traits after hitting Malicious Blades went straight for Finesse and Brute, as I needed the extra speed and power. The BFG only saw use once, against an asshole of a Mancubus across a river of lava. I got the Thermonuclear Bomb a few levels before Erebus, just when I had resigned myself to fighting Spidey again.

I did not have an envirosuit handy, but had enough health and health packs to traverse the lava of Erebus without it simply by booking it across at a dead run. Using my tac shotgun to deal with any Lost Souls that attacked me on the platform, I then took the boomstick to town on the Shotgun Guys before taking my chainswords to the Hellknights. There were still some Lost Souls remaining, as well as some Duelist Armor (I think that was what it was), but I passed it by because I already had the Onyx Blue Armor. If I had held on to the Onyx Mod, I could have used that Duelist Armor as my endgame armor, but as they say, them's the breaks. So after grabbing and putting on the envirosuit, I went out into the lava and got rid of the rest of the Lost Souls before fighting and putting down the Lava Elemental for the Lava Element. By the time I got to the final level before Dis, I had about three or so health packs remaining.

The last level before Dis was by far the most frustrating. Not only did I have to fight two to three Mancubi and about three to four Arachnotrons, but also one Baron of Hell and my only Revenant before the final battle. The place also had a lot of lava and lava barrels, one of which I mistakenly pushed into a lava bed -- if I hadn't been rather high on health, that would have been the end of my run right there. The last Arachs and the Revenant were in an area that I could only get to by rocketing the wall. Nice thing about the Arachs is that while they can do some pretty heinous damage, once you get right up close to them, the Chainswords can one-shot them just like that. After it was all said and done, I had sixty-five or so health left, and I could not find a single health item or megasphere for the life of me, meaning I had to use one of my three remaining health packs, leaving me with just two health packs for the final showdown.

After entering Dis and nuking Spidey, I entered the Hell Fortress, where Carmack was waiting. The Blades took care of the Lost Souls in time to get right up in Carmack's business. After several or so hits and teleporting around, he was able to get a rocket off on me, putting me at fifty-something. I used another medpack and continued to battle the Evil. When he spawned the Revenants, I nailed him a couple more times and put him down for good for my second YAFW and third YAAM.

28
So I've been fighting my way through DoomRL again.

I've had a number of YASDs over the course, including one Army of the Dead marine who didn't pack an envirosuit for Mt Erebus and got cooked alive trying to fight the Lost Souls, and one guy who got the Bomb and the Lava Element, only to rush into a room with a Tracking Map on the level just before Spidey and get smacked into an exploding lava barrel by a Baron of Hell. My best run thus far was an intuition/shotgun scout who got all the way to Carmack before meeting the same fate as my Survivalist. That battle was interesting because I pulled the BFG on his ass out of his line of sight, and he retaliated by throwing some Barons my way which I had to deal with. With four major endgames under my belt and a string of failures, taking Carmack down and grabbing the full win seemed to be out of my reach.

Until now.

 5 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
2 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
2 killed the bitch and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

It began much like any other run. I determined that this run would be a Marine run, and I was debating with myself whether to go for Bullet Dance (which benefits from Son of a Gun and Son of a Bitch unlike other pistol builds), Army of the Dead (which ignores armor for your shotgunnery), Ammochain (the only Marine Master to work with HR and DM, and synergizes quite well with shotguns because of Son of a Bitch and Reloader), or Survivalist (which basically makes you a tank and makes your health packs work like Health Globes and Soul Spheres). My first time getting to Carmack was on a Survivalist build, and the main reason I died was because I didn't know how to handle the summons the bastard threw my way.

The shotgun was my workhorse weapon for much of the early game, with the chaingun from Hell's Arena seeing use for much of the early action as well through Episode 1. I managed to snag myself an envirosuit and a Combat Shotgun before coming to Phobos Lab, and it got put to use in the nukage section of the level. These days, I know to head to one corner of the area after downing the two big potions on either side and hitting the switch, which makes the trap with the Demons and the Shotgun Guys a lot more manageable to deal with. I assembled the Tactical Shotgun using the mods I found both in the Chained Court and in the Lab. Corner-shooting really is your best friend against the Bruiser Brothers with this thing -- all you really have to do is book it to the lower corner of the entryway and blast off until they die. I managed to kill them both with absolutely no damage to health or armor doing this, which was very damned nice.

Episode 2 saw me fighting Hellknights and the odd Baron of Hell in addition to the Imps, Demons and skulls. The thermonuclear bomb got added to my collection early on, and I did my best to hold on to it, since I knew that it would be vitally important. The Containment Area was a bastard of a battle which saw me snagging the Backpack and using the Missile Launcher against the first big scrum of Hellknights before doing corner-shooting with the tac shotgun against the rest of them. The City of Skulls was entered using a Berserk Pack, and it didn't take too long to clear out the initial scrum of Lost Souls before moving in and gunning down the rest.  The Halls of Carnage cost me a YAAM on my first major victory run, but unlike the other major run, I did not Jackhammer my way through it, and so I had plenty of time to murder every demon and zombie in my way and get to the BFG. I also waited a while for the lava to come and kill anything I missed before I moved on to the next area. I first pulled out the BFG against the Cyberdemon, but then switched to the Tactical Shotgun when he got close enough for melee. If I had found a Double Shotgun, I most likely would have used the puppy, but considering that I did not have Shottyman yet, it was basically a tanking fight, with me putting blast after blast into him, and then getting blasted in return as I reloaded the shotgun. By the time the bastard went down, most of my health packs were gone and so was pretty much all of my armor.

I went armorless for much of the first segment of Hell, and cornershooting was very much a necessity for survival, as well as scavenging whatever health I could find and making use of some green armor which didn't last very long. I also took to using rockets to open up areas that I would otherwise have had to slog through lava in order to reach. The area which saw me getting into decent armor again had a very tricky segment with an archvile, a lava barrel, and a red armor right next to it. I used my missile launcher, which I had gotten a Firestorm mod for on an earlier Hell level, on a Baron of Hell, then came back to find that some pissant zombie had gotten his hands on the armor, which pissed me off. After killing him, I grabbed up the armor, which thankfully didn't suffer too much damage, and put down the Vile before moving on. Some nasty encounters with a few Mancubi, spiders and Barons over the course of the next levels served to whittle the armor down bit by bit before my trip to Mt. Erebus.

Erebus is essentially the bigger, badder brother of the Lava Pits. I made sure to get an envirosuit ready before tackling the level, as I did not want a repeat of the YASD I suffered on that other big run through it. I blasted my way through the Lost Souls and Shotgun Guys before fighting the Hellknights. The Hellknights tore through my good armor before I put them down, and when the last ones appeared, I elected to use my missile launcher on them, which destroyed most of the stuff in the center with the exception of the Lava Armor. When the Lava Elemental appeared, out came the BFG for the smackdown. After putting on another envirosuit and grabbing the Lava Element, I got the hell out of there. The final level before Dis was one which saw me getting some very nice Red Armor, but where the walls were not destructible even with my missile launcher, and saw me fighting Imps, zombies, some Mancubi, a Baron of Hell that kept destroying my cover, and an Arachnotron that I killed with the missile launcher. Once everything was dead, I made sure to get rid of everything I didn't need, including the Arena Master's Staff, which didn't see use at all; a Homing Phase Device; and my Plasma Gun, which I unloaded for much needed cell power for the BFG before grabbing the Invincibility Sphere, marching into Dis and nuking the hell out of Spidey. And with that, after making a final inventory, it was on to the final showdown.

I kicked off the battle against Carmack by breaking out the missile launcher, which did a respectable amount of damage to him and his summons. But when the Lost Souls got too close, I whipped out the tac shotgun and blasted them to hell. Carmack started appearing next to me for some more shotgun action, but when the Cacos and then the Hellknights started appearing, I decided "screw this" and broke out the BFG, ignoring the Hellknights in favor of giving Carmack what for, relying on my health packs to keep myself alive and in health. My red armor was all but gone by the time Carmack began summoning Revenants, and after reloading the BFG, I let loose with one final blast which put him down for good. And just like that, it was over.

This run is not only my very first YAFW and my second YAAM run, but it's also the first time I've gotten the Conqueror Badge, which is gotten by clearing every special level on a given run.

Beating Carmack for the first time is definitely something I will remember for a while. I hope to get good enough to tackle the harder difficulties so I can start unlocking some more stuff such as the Angel of 100 and start playing around with some of the other big items of the game, such as Azrael's Scythe, the Dragon Slayer, and the more advanced assemblies.

29
So after several more tries in going through this game with shotgun builds, pistol builds, chaingun builds, and even the odd melee build or so, I decided to fire up a Technician. This time, I wanted to go for a melee build -- specifically, I wanted to go for a dual-chainsword Malicious Blades build, but I wasn't too sure if the RNG was going to cooperate. Well...

--------------------------------------------------------------

The first part of the game had me going primarily with the shotgun and blasting my opposition. The times when I could get hold of a Computer Map were damned nice because of the Technician's ability to treat every Computer Map as a Tracking Map. I bypassed Hell's Arena due to the fact that one, there are no mods to be found anywhere in that level, and two, I wasn't interested in trying to tackle that place as a meleeist. I picked up the two Combat Knives that I would use to create the Chainswords early on in the game (I think around Level 2 or so). The Chained Court saw me getting my hands on a chainsaw and my first taste of the Berserker Rage, which I used on the zombie soldiers and the Cacos of the level, but sadly, I only got a Power Mod and Tech Mod from the place. The Military Base was where I got my first plasma gun, off a Commando in the hidden room, as well as a Tracking Map that allowed me to plan out my battle with the bad guys in the final room. I had gotten a combat shotgun in the previous level, but upon getting another power mod, I decided to create a tactical shotgun. I also had a choice to make -- either stick to the melee build path, or go with more of an all-around build. In the end, I decided to stick to my guns (so to speak). I used the Power Mod I also got from the base on the Red Armor in the Phobos Anomaly, since I badly needed protection against the two Barons of Hell that were the bosses of the place. Since I didn't have Shottyman or Reloader, fighting the Barons was an ugly affair, and without the medpacks I'd picked up, I doubt I'd have survived, let alone killed them both.

The next episode saw me finding two more power mods. Since I had learned early on that trying to melee a Demon with an unmodded Combat Knife was not going to work without taking a ton of damage, upon acquiring the second major power mod, I went ahead and power-modded both of my knives. Level 12 saw me finding my first Bulk Mod, which I used to convert the first of my Combat Knives into my first Chainsword. I was still kinda wary about melee at this point, so I didn't go with the weapon as my primary until later. I passed by the Containment Area because one, I did not have a rocket launcher, two, because my prior experiences with the level told me that tac shotgun with my build versus a tonload of Hellknights would not end well for me, and three, the backpack is useless for a melee build. The Abyssal Plains were the battle that almost ended me -- unmodded tactical shotgun with no Reloader or Shottyman against the Agony Elemental, his Pain Elementals and a whole mess of Lost Souls was not a fun fight. Again, I primarily survived through use of my health packs, and when that wall behind me went down, I took the opportunity to get the living hell out of the central room and continue blasting the hell out of Mr. Agony Elemental until he finally went down, then finished off the rest of the baddies, including a Lost Soul that I had to hunt down. The next few levels were not a fun ride. Words cannot express how much I HATE acid and lava barrels, especially in areas with lots of lava and acid. There was one point where I had a Baron in the room with little armor and few health packs remaining, and a frigging Tristar Blaster in the room. I decided to grab the puppy and use it on the Baron. I very nearly killed myself, but I got him. I used the weapon sparingly from then on, primarily relying on the Plasma Gun against tough enemies, including another Commando and a frigging Arachnotron that I had to maneuver carefully in order to stay alive. At one point while I was engaging Plasma Guy, Little Spidey got into the door I was using as cover against it and into melee range. I decided "all right you little fucker", pulled out the Chainsword and ripped its little ass in two with one hit.

The Chainsword turned out to be a fun-as-hell weapon to use, especially when in Berserk mode. And when I got my hands on Malicious Blades, things got even better. I went into the Spider's Lair on an Invulnerability powerup and decided to take both my Chainsword and my still power-modded Combat Knife to town on the Arachnotrons, and killed every one of them before the invulnerability wore off. I left the Tristar Blaster behind and picked up the BFG. Level 15 marked a period of transition between my ranged playstyle and my new Malicious Blades melee style. I was able to bring down Imps and Demons with very little problem, and when I one-shotted a Baron of Hell in full Berserk mode, I knew I had found my build. The reason the History says that I "left level 16 as soon as possible was because the Cyberdemon ended up spawning right next to me, but unlike my first ever encounter with the big guy which had much the same setup and which ended up with me getting smeared all over the vicinity, I zig-zagged my way over to him and tore him apart with four or five hits for a flawless victory, not even giving the big guy a chance to get out the rocket launcher.

Hell saw me gradually switching to the Blades full time, and on Level 3 of Hell, I finally found another Bulk Mod pack at long last, guarded by around four or so Cacodemons in a small room. In any other situation, going into melee with four Cacodemons in this situation would be suicide. But with my armor, my health and my new melee skills, I laid waste to all four of the gasbags and assembled my second Chainsword on the spot. From there on out, I switched primarily to my dual Chainswords as my primary weapon, with my other weapons being secondary and only seeing use against Sergeants and others that I knew I couldn't get close to. The dual chainswords are quite capable of taking out the Dreaded Trio (Revenants, Viles and Mancubi) in two or so hits, though there was one point where I was faced with two Revenants and a Vile together and I had to get the hell out of there, whip out the BFG and blast the hell out of them, which ended up doing a shit-ton of damage to the walls and covered the floor in lava. With the Revenant taken out, I closed in with the weakened Vile and chainsworded him to death (a nice little bonus was that when I killed a Vile with the chainswords, the result was usually gibbage), then hunted down the remaining Revenant and did the same. I entered a number of levels with Invulnerability, which allowed me to go to frigging town on things out of the gate, including the very last level before Ol' Spidey, which was full of Cacodemons and Arachnotrons. I found the Thermonuclear Bomb somewhere along the road to the final level, in a Demon and Lost Soul infested cave, but because I had missed another special level along the way, I had no Invulnerability for the final battle with Spidey, and there was no Invulnerability to be had in the second to last level, so I elected not to use the nuke. What I did get was a Soul Sphere and a nice Red Armor, which I power-modded for the final battle.

I have only fought Spidey three times, one of which I already posted about. The second time, on another Survivalist build, I nuked her and used Invulnerability to survive, but I cannot count it as a win because my first battle with Carmack saw me getting overwhelmed by his summons and getting killed. This third battle saw me wading through Spidey's heinous autofire to get right in her face and take the chainswords to town. Spidey moved a lot during the battle once I started doing damage, but I stayed on her the entire way and backed her into one of the big pillars surrounding the arena and eventually killed her. I was at around 80% health and 62% armor when I finally brought Spidey down.

This is my second big win, and my first successful YAAM run. I still have not beaten Carmack, so YAFW is still beyond my reach. One day...

Post Mortem / Re: [E|99%|24|YAVP] First Post and First Win
« on: May 26, 2014, 22:40 »
I mainly used my prepared weapon slot to switch between Double Shotgun and Tactical Shotgun early on, especially once I picked up Juggler, but when I first ran out of shells shortly after my big Jackhammer spree in the Halls of Carnage (which, hindsight-wise, was rather a dumb move -- the double shotgun uses less ammo and especially close-up, kills things faster), I used the slot in question for the shell box I picked up, which kept me in ammo long enough to restock a bit. The plasma gun, which I first grabbed off the Commando, did see use during my dry spells, but I didn't use it very often, mainly because I wanted to save power cells for the BFG, which is a notorious ammo hog power cell-wise. As for the mod packs, between the tactical shotgun, the tactical boots, the nanofiber armor and the bulk mod I used to add an extra rocket for the mag on the missile launcher, there wasn't a whole lot I could really use them for toward the end with what I had -- I did think about tactical armor with my two agility mods, but one, green armor is a bit tough to come by in Hell, and two, I was happy with my nanofiber armor.

There were precious few shells in Hell, particularly toward the end, which is why I was stuck using the missile launcher for the Spidey battle. Even without the shotguns, shotgun builds are excellent for those who use rocket launchers, as I did not have to worry about hitting R for anything but a full reload, which made the battle with Spidey a lot less of a hassle than it otherwise would have been. I doubt I would have survived my second battle with the Cyberdemon without it. I think on my next run, I'll take your advice about melee weapons as a shotgunner.
