--------------------------------------------------------------

This was probably the hardest non-Nightmare game I've played so far. Powerups of any kind aren't usable at all. This one rule causes a lot of problems. First, the major one, is that powerups are still generated, and thus takes up space that could've been used to generate a medpack or a piece of armor. At least in Impatience players are able to use the items, but here the powerups might as well be empty dungeon squares. Second, the player have to get into the habit of stocking up on armors. Without armor shards, the only way to repair armor is by armor repair depots. Finding the repair levers are pretty rare, so there really isn't any way to depend on them to keep your armor in good shape, so you really have to get used to using the armor given as much as possible. Lastly, there is no way to gain Invulnerability for easy level clearing or Berserk for enhanced speed and resistances ( outside of Berserker, which I believe is a pretty risky playstyle without powerups ), with exceptions being the lava element and chainsaw, but their effects are one-use.

Started the game off with a Scout going for Intx2. I thought the Scout class is pretty important due to stair-sense since some levels may put the player in a very tough situation at the start and the only chance the player has is to run, especially now since the AI has been updated to chase better. Intx2 helps with radar-shooting enemies, but more imporantly it IDs levers. Levers can provide additional healing outside of medpacks and armor repair, both of which are pretty important. Levers can also set the room you're in on fire, so IDing them helps with seperating the good from the bad.

On the first level, it was very important to get all four medpacks without taking too much damage. I had to restart a few times to get an acceptable result. On the next few levels I used a combination of doorways, radar-shooting, and gift-dropping to fight as many enemies one-on-one as possible. I believe Hell's Arena generated in level 2. I skipped it because it would've made Chained Court a lot harder since I couldn't use the Berserk Packs, but thinking about it now I forgot that I could stopped after the second wave and still get the large med pack.

After getting Intx2, I had to think about what traits I should be planning on getting. Originally I thought about getting Shottyhead, but it required Shottyman and that alone is worth 3 levels. 3 levels is a lot to wait for while filling in Ironman in between for instant healing and to increase effectiveness of medpacks. I also needed Dodgemaster by the time I get to the Cyberdemon as well, which is also not part of Shottyhead's requirements. In fact, all the Scout master traits require quite a bit of investment into offensive traits early on, so I decided to just go Masterless, fill up on speed whenever I can ( HR for speed/dodge chance/Dodgemaster, Fin for fire speed ) and Ironman whenever I'm a bit hurt on level up.

Chained court has the chainsaw, which gave the Berserk Pack effect ( healing and status ), so I took the free health and left. I had to enter the Wall for a quick escape, then left because I didn't want to have to deal with Arch-Viles and an army of ammo sponges. I ran past Phobos Anamoly since I was really low on health reserves by that point. Managed to run to the door and close it just enough to gain some distance before it was open again. Ran in between the Bruisers then tried to stay in cover after getting past them to enter the gate.

Shortly after Phobos Anamoly, I found the assault shotgun. I was still using the normal shotgun up to this point because I wasn't lucky enough to get a combat shotgun, so I welcomed the upgrade. Around this time is also where I found both the plasma rifle and the rocket launcher. I needed the plasma rifle because sometimes I can't afford to knock an enemy out of melee range since almost all of them have more dangerous ranged attacks or if a Baron or Hell Knight wear some armor. I agility modded the plasma rifle as soon as I found one. The rocket launcher was needed to fight the Cyberdemon, and I bulk-modded it so I can keep up with the Cyberdemon while reloading. I skipped all the special levels in Episode 2 due to either the lack of health and/or supplies for what I have to go through to finish the level.

Cyberdemon has to be killed through damage. Nuking him is not an option to advance. I went in with the rocket launcher first since it started close to wall. I either shot at it or reloaded once per one of its moves just to be safe. After running out of rockets ( only found one stack up to this point ) I switched to the plasma rifle. Fired until the rifle was empty, and the Cyberdemon was mortally wounded. I chose not to reload the rifle because the reload time is really long and it will allow the Cyberdemon to hit me, so I just switched to the assault shotgun and finished it off.

Episode 3 was where it really got tense, with levels just filled with AVMRBs, turning each corner had the possibility of getting sniped by one of the above. For the most part I just ran for the stairs whenever I can, only stopping if there's a large med pack or homing phase in sight without imminent danger. There were a few levels where the stairs were generated on the other side of the map, that is where I used napalm/acid barrels to create barriers so I can safely radar-shoot enemies. Thankfully, commando/sergeant packs were still being generated at that point so I was still stocked up on ammo.

I managed to find a nuke in the 20s. With a nuke in hand I knew that I didn't need anything else against SM, so I just speed ran past everything as fast as I could. I burned (homing) phase devices and just bee-lined to the stairs at every opportunity. I don't think I even fired a bullet in the last few levels. Once I reached Dis I activated the nuke and just ran in place until it blew up.

Unfortunately I can't remember the fine details of the run as I waited a few hours before writing this up. But that is pretty much what I remember in general in the run. Overall, I'd say it's one of the hardest challenges in the game. Not sure why this is only rated "Hard" in the Challenges screen, should be at least in Masochism's level. Playing this on UV made me realize how important powerups really are and how fragile characters seem to be without them.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Nothing special this time around. Originally intended to be a YAAM and Conqueror run, I didn't have any envirosuits for Lava Pits in this run. I think the only one that I found in the game was used in Hell's Armory after beating the Shambler.

I managed to construct quite a few decent pieces of equipment. The super shotgun was extremely helpful in this run. It appeared at Hell's Armory and a lot of bulk and power mods generated in this run, so I managed to buff it up quite a bit. With the mods, a few points into SoB, and enough points into Reloader to get Shottyman, not even Arachnotrons were able to keep up with the knockback in extreme range. Even Arch-Viles were having a hard time getting close enough to use their attacks.

The BFG(+) was constructed right before the Mortuary, and it was a big help. One shot from the weapon and most of the enemies caught in the blast radius just get destroyed, and corpses within like a skull's radius all get gibbed. Unfortunately I didn't have much ammo going into the Mortuary, so I had to stick the nBFG and BFG(+) in my weapon slots and just dance around until one of them is fully charged.

Cyberdemon died really fast. Entered Phobos Arena with about 25 turns of Invulnerability left. The Cyberdemon spawned barely in my Intuition range, so I fired the nBFG first, then swapped to the BFG(+), then finally finished it off with a single rocket, so he went down within 3 attacks. I probably could've went for a full win since the BFG(+) can possibly kill the boss in one shot, and I have plenty of rockets as backup. But maybe for another time.

I honestly wasn't expecting to get this one done since I was just looking at the Platinum/Diamond badges and just trying out each one to see how far I get. But, surprised at how far I got on my first death, I decided to just keep trying.

First death was due to a Cacodemon cave, second one was because of running into a commando/sergeant group with an empty shotgun.

(Not sure if mortems within mortems is legal, but I would like to show some of the failures. Remove it if necessary)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

First time I got to the Cyberdemon, I tried to build up on melee after seeing GH run through it a few times. I pretty much just ran straight for the stairs each time, picking up any Berserk and Invulnerability powerup I can. When I reached Phobos Arena, I really didn't stand a chance. My traits didn't help with any of my weapons that I was carrying. Best thing I got was the rocket launcher with the rocket box for rapid reloading. It wasn't enough, however, since I didn't have any accuracy bonus I missed a lot, thus doing virtually no damage, and didn't have any defensive traits to survive the attacks. I also realized in that fight that the Cyberdemon is immune to splash, never really tried in the past.

In the next attempt where I got to Phobos Arena again...

...I was actually pretty confident this time around. Managed to get to the Cyberdemon with a chainsaw, bulk modded for extra damage, 2 points in Brute, and started out invincible. One very important thing I forgot, and that was invincible does not protect from knockback. Got a bit overconfident and tried to rush the Cyberdemon directly in the effort to preserve invincibility, but the Cyberdemon just kept knocking me back before I realized what happened. Turned on running when I saw my invulnerability turn grey, but by then it was too late because I was still about 4 squares away so I just didn't have enough time to get back into melee range and survive.

So, since I needed the damage to kill the Cyberdemon quickly, but also needed something counter the Cyberdemon's accuracy and knockback, there was only one thing I can really do.  I had to kill enough enemies in order to get Berserker, since it provides a massive increase in melee damage and all resistances, and especially since it can now active when just taking damage, Berserker was essential. Decided to just give up on Intuition and just go for Brute at the start since I was honestly just picking up powerups on the way to the stairs anyway so it wasn't all that useful.

Started out with only using the Chaingun for the first level since I couldn't find a sergeant before running into an imp horde blocking the rest of the level. Chained Court was where I really took a bit of time to get as much experience as possible without using a medpack. Started with the chaingun to clear out one side in order to pick up a shotgun and shells safely, then cleared out the sergeants at both stairs, and then finally pick up all the Berserk Packs and chainsaw for maximum berserk time. Berserk lasted me for a few levels, which I just spent the time to head for the stairs while killing anything that was on the way. After getting Berserker I really just went straight for the stairs as quickly as possible.

The major lifesaver in this game was the Enviroboots. In multiple levels, I started with a river running horizontally across the screen and walls blocking all my exits with the downstairs right across the river and bridge off to the other side of the map. This run probably wouldn't have made it if it weren't for the environmental immunity because in Unholy Cathedral I was at half health with 2 small med packs after the Angel of Death fight.

With the Longinus Spear in hand( great damage and knockback resistance), downstairs in the levels following Unholy Cathedral spawning close to the starting position, massive amount of berserk built up from Berserker activating when dealing and taking damage from the Angel of Death,  and an extra medpack just in case, I was able to squeeze in a win. I wasn't expecting to finish the run that quick, since this time I actually tried to gain enough levels to take down the Cyberdemon, but I guess the final few levels contributed to that.

P.S. I guess I should really try to record runs I plan to post in order to save people from walls of text.

Oh, and sometimes I do hate the RNG...

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.4 Win] Scavenged Unique Mods didn't count
« on: October 04, 2011, 07:31 »
I'm not sure if this is intended or not, but it doesn't seem like unique mods that were made from scavenging counts for the list of specials the player found. I got 2 Nano Packs from the same recent game using Scavenger on 2 uniques, but the Nano Pack wasn't logged until today where I found another one in a new game on the ground.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Doesn't seem too long ago when I did my first UV Marksman run in 0.9.9.3.

Haven't had the time to pay much attention to challenges in this version, so I thought I'd give UV Marksman a try. I played Marksman on HNTR about a week ago with a Sharpshooter build and it worked very nicely as I found a GCB mid-game, and just destroyed enemies without much effort, so I try the build again hoping for about the same level of success.

Started the game with an agility and tech mod which I was very grateful for because I remember having to reload with pistols in early levels was an game killer. The next two levels after the entry was full of formers. I think half of my inventory was taken up by just 10mm ammo, so I was pretty confident in Hell's Arena as blind-fire would be more viable. The first two waves of Hell's Arena wasn't that bad, because if there weren't any enemies nearby, I'd just walk-->wait until I hear an enemy sound. If I don't hear anything I just move from cover to cover until I do hear one, then just walk--> wait some more until the enemy walks into my view and just go from there. When the Barons arrived, however, things got pretty bad. They spawned on opposite sides, and I had to use all my medpacks and running just to escape and find an okay corner ( was at 2 HP at one point ). I did manage to finish the Arena, but was left with pretty much no usable armor ( all the greens were below 20% condition ) and no medpacks. The Arena rewards did give me a bulk mod though, which was a rarity in this run for some reason.

Thankfully, I didn't enter the next level in the middle with enemies all around, and I managed to find myself a power mod in a corner. This is the point where the gameplay got interesting. I had SoG(3) by this point, and when combined with a 2d7 HP pistol, I was starting to see some knockback. I basically used the HP pistol to one-shot formers for ammo conservation, and save the speedloader for tougher enemies that will definitely take multiple hits. A few levels later and I managed to get the Master Trait, Sharpshooter. With Sharpshooter, I was pretty much guaranteed to knockback any enemy with the HP pistol ( first time where I managed to see a lost soul get knockback without dying ). Unfortunately, all the vaults I ran into up to this point only had like a small medpack, envirosuit, and a weapon I can't use, so my gear wasn't really improving much. I did find a bullet-proof vest though, but didn't have the mod to make it ballistic for bullet immunity, so I didn't keep it for long.

Hell's Armory went pretty well. Managed to kill the cacodemons at the start before they had a chance to hit. Shot down the doors in the first column of buildings to let the formers just trickle out. After that it was pretty much just walk-->wait in a safe corner until an enemy shows up then just blast it. Did that for a couple of minutes to clear out all the formers and most of the patrolling cacodemons. Didn't manage to get a perfect Hell's Armory run because a revenant sniped me when I wasn't expecting it to be free. The Shambler itself was pretty easy, especially since it didn't attack when I was running to a building for cover, and when it did teleport to my location, I was able to corner shoot it safely. The knockback from the HP pistol kept it from hitting me, and I took no damage from the Shambler itself. Unfortunately, the lab cache only gave me an advanced assembly schematic. Made myself some fireproof armor since the lab reward actually gave me the components, and two of the most dangerous enemies for me deal fire damage. This is also about the point where I got Juggler, which I found really useful. I can just shoot an enemy barely in my vision with the HP pistol for knockback, then blind fire the spot with the speedloader so I don't have to waste time reloading, and if the enemy gets back into view, I can just knock it back again and repeat. Works well for anything other than arachnotrons and arch-viles.

Mid to end game really wasn't that interesting, although it was pretty tense. Just ran past Hellgate. In the Phobos Hell levels, I tried to use my knockback capabilities, lava, and napalm barrels as much as possible to dispose of corpses. I was very low on medpacks throughout the entire game. However, I had a lot of ammo coming into Phobos Hell ( about 6 stacks of 10mm ammo and 3 ammo chains ), so I wasn't afraid to have an endurance match against arch-vile armies since I was able to kill most enemies before they could react. It also made corpse stacking in some places easier. I really didn't bother with any of the special levels after this point due to usually lacking health and no well-placed supercharge or invulnerability. Once SoG(4) and SoG(5) came along, things really became easier because I was able to knockback enemies using the speedloader pistol, which made great use out of the abundance of lava and acid. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish assembling the pistol I wanted ( the only reason I took Whizkid) , and I didn't find any usable uniques in the entire game ( only found the Dragonslayer in Phobos Hell, and I couldn't use it ). Probably could've done lava pits as there was another envirosuit pack on the previous level, but I didn't want to take the chance on a UV challenge game I didn't finish yet.

Cyberdemon was simple, but pretty frightening when I fought it. The Cyberdemon was almost in might sight when I entered the level, and I only had 2 med packs. I try to keep on running to avoid the rockets, but since the fight started real close to the north and western edges, I did take splash damage. I also wasted probably dozens of turns since I tend to dodge to early and not use my .1 seconds firing speed to the fullest. But I did manage to take it down in time ( think I was nearly out of running at the end, and had no way to replenish it ).

--------------------------------------------------------------

I know ITYTD games don't count for much, but this was one of the toughest games that I ever played, it made the UV wins look like a joke. Being afraid of everything that was tougher than an imp really screwed up with my experience here, think I was only clvl 3 by the time I reached Phobos Hellgate.

Gift dropping really helped in the starting levels. Think I had the late-fork layout for Phobos Entry though, so I just had to take a shotgun blast really early. But, I did have all four medpacks so I decided not to quit. A few of the first levels had wide open areas with rivers running through with the stairs right in the middle. Tried to gift drop my way through, but it was awkward without doors and the area was too open, so I got shot a lot just for trying.

After killing enough enemies for a level up, I decided to just take the Hellrunner path instead of trying to go straight for Berserker, since I was taking way too much damage early game just to get by. Some people like to take Tough as Nails in this situation though, so I'm not sure which is generally better in this kind of run. Somewhere in between the start and Hellgate, I manage to pick up an agility mod and used it immediately on my boots for a much needed speed boost. Since I'm taking the speed path I was aiming for enough speed to outrun demons as they're big trouble if I get spotted by them. In the next level I found a shockwave pack near the entrance and this was an extremely vital item in this run. I was glad to at least have it.

When I reached Phobos Hellgate, I noticed that I was only at clvl 3 ( Brute and 2 Hellrunners ). With what I have I realized that I had to rely solely on nukes to beat the game, but I didn't find any yet. As I ran through the area and release the first pack of enemies, I realized that it was only lost souls and cacodemons on this difficulty. This was when I took the chance and ran ahead to the door to use as a chokepoint to kill a few Lost Souls, which brought me to clvl 4. I just knew it in my gut that I probably won't find a nuke with the number of dangerous enemies that populate Phobos Hell. Dodgemaster would've been nice, but I just felt it won't be any good if I got to the end can't even get past the Cyberdemon's armor a third of the time. So, I took a second rank of Brute in hopes that I will be able to rank up one last time for Berserker. It was the only other option I had left. Cacodemons were already at the door now, so I shut it quickly and made a dash to the portal.

Phobos Hell really felt like Hell. There was a chance that opening a door would just make me take a critical hit from a Revenant behind it, or have Arch-viles just chase me and there's nothing I can do about it. There wasn't many opportunities for me to get experience at all, as they're all tough enemies, in large groups, or both. There's been more than one instance this run where I would've died if I didn't have any homing phase devices ( in case of pain elementals and lost souls ) or envirosuits ( long lava rivers with no bridge in sight ). However, still no sight of a nuke.

For pretty much the rest of the levels I had to descend the stairs whenever I find them. I was either getting chased by Arch-Viles and Barons or getting surrounded by a horde of lost souls accompanied by pain elementals. I felt extremely vulnerable, there was absolutely nothing I can do but run. In one instance I was chased by an Arch-Vile, found the stairs to the Spider's Lair, but was reluctant to go into there so I tried to run some more, but then another Arch-Vile appeared in front of me. So I to choose between running from two super-fast and super-accurate Arch-Viles, or a horde of plasma-rifle spiders. Finally decided to take the chance at Spider's Lair since I remembered the stairs weren't too far from the entrance. I think I made the better choice, since Hellrunner + running got me through without much damage, while the Arch-Viles would've just caught up to me and burned me the whole way.

Encountered two nukes on the stairs back-to-back, but thankfully the stairs weren't too far apart. Also found another agility mod nearby and it was really helpful as I'm now fast enough so that I'm almost on par with Arch-Viles in my less-restrictive armor. Further down, I reached level 24. It was an Arachnotron cave with the stairs in sight. My first reaction was just to make for the stairs and just continue, but then I took a step back and look at what I have. I haven't found a nuke yet, so I can't get an easy win against the Cyberdemon. I was also still at clvl 4 ( 2 Brutes and 2 Hellrunners ), so I know I won't even scratch the Cyberdemon at all if I choose to fight it out. So if I don't gain a level here, then there would be absolutely no chance of success, and all this would be for nothing. I took the chance, and tried to gain some experience ( was at 70-80% ). I still had about a dozen turns of invincibility left, so I quickly took a step towards the closest arachnotron and hit it a few times until it died, and it got me up to the 80s. Now this is where things got desperate. I had no invincibility and I can't survive a melee match against an arachnotron while its friends are shooting at me. I grouped up the arachnotrons, turned on running, and just kept sidestepping as much as I could to try to make them destroy each other. It worked, so now I'm clvl 5 and can take Berserker. Also, I didn't take much damage from it at all due to the dodge bonuses of Hellrunner and running. I quickly descended the stairs to avoid further damage.

Upon entering, I quickly equipped my power modded red armor and got behind a pillar. I waited until its footsteps were really loud, then sidestep out to get its attention. It followed and now we're 1 square away from each other. I turned on running, then sidestep the first rocket, got in close while it reloads, take a hit, then back off. I manage to keep this triangle dance up for a while until it got a rocket to hit while sidestepping. This knocked me back a fair bit and i had to heal up. 6 medkits used and my armor starting to get badly damaged, I noticed I wasn't doing much damage to it at all ( didn't get a single Berserk yet ). so I looked at my inventory for options. Right near the bottom was the shockwave pack that I saved up from way earlier in the game. This was the last time to use it, so I thought might as well. The Shockwave pack got him down to 'severely wounded'. However, he got an extra melee hit on me then. I panicked and backed off and hit hit me with a rocket. I had to heal up and tried to sidestep closer, but I got hit by the rocket's splash damage and my red armor destroyed. I then realized how close I was to the wall, and I couldn't keep up because I'll either get hit by his melee or his splash damage. I phased out, thankfully it teleported me to the other side of the arena. It allowed me to heal up and put on backup armor. I sidestepped my way back towards the Cyberdemon's location, it appeared by it didn't fire at me. I sidestep a few more times and it still didn't fire. I thought it was out of rockets ( it really wasn't, but I wasn't paying attention ) and that was a really bad thing. If it goes into melee-only mode, that means that I can't dodge any more of its attacks and I'll be done for. So I ran up to it as close as I can without giving away a free turn, turned off running to maximize damage, hit it, and berserk activates for the first time. I thought that this was it, if I can't kill it now then it's over. So I hit it, checked its status, and noticed that I'm now actually doing real damage. Once more, and the Cyberdemon explodes.

I'm glad I got through it, but it was really intense the whole way through. Playing without guns or even the small knife made me feel really weak in comparison to pretty much everything else. Leveling up may have helped, but I might've been way too cautious in the beginning. I may try for Strongman Platinum in the future, but for now I think I'm going to take a break from fist-only games.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 95 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 63 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
3 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 5 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 23 souls claim to have killed him...
22 killed the bastard and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

Hello, this is my first time posting on the forum so hopefully I did everything right. I usually play my games on HNTR or HMP since my last UV attempts end up dying on like level 2 since I never really used tricks all that much until now. However, when I watched Game Hunter's video on doing Hell's Arena for the Arena Gold Badge, I decided to take a shot at it and started a UV game on Angel of Marksmanship.

Started the game with a Bulk mod, I immediate put it on my pistol thinking I'd need it. Learning about gift dropping really helped out on the earlier levels. Usually I just run into the building on level 1 and reach the stairs with very low health and no medpacks due to opening doors to eat a shotgun blast. But with gift dropping and getting the map with 2 pillars at the front, as well as switching to frontal start position ( first time using that too ), I ended the level with no damage and about 3 medpacks I believe, I already noticed a difference. Confidence restored, I descended.

With the knowledge of gift dropping equipped, I managed to clear the earlier levels without taking much damage and stocked up on 10mm ammo, armor, and small med packs. Then, after clearing level 3, I encountered the stairs to the Hell's Arena and descended it.

When I entered the arena, there were only a few enemies around me, so I decided to try and run to avoid being detected. I managed to reach the pillar at the bottom of the map and the enemy sounds weren't that loud. At that point I remembered about enemies liking to go towards the center of the map and noticed two pillars in the middle-left of the map close to my position. So I waited in place for a few seconds for the enemies to move towards the middle, and made my way to the middle-left pillars. I noticed a demon at long range when I got there, but I manage to destroy it quickly enough. From there I constantly shot blindly towards the middle of the map. Some of the cacodemons tried to run to me, but didn't get a chance to fire back. The wave eventually fell and the second wave spawned in. Luckily, none of the enemies spawned in my sight, so I used the same tactic above, with the same outcome. Being glad that I managed to cleared the first two waves without taking damage, I accepted the last wave.

At the start of the third wave, I didn't see a Baron in sight, so I just used the same tactic above of waiting and shooting blindly. I managed to get the attention of one Baron and took him down with little trouble thanks to corner tricks. However, the other Baron got a sneak attack shot on me while I searched for it, so I lost the Arena Key at that point. But, I managed to take it down after finding some cover and running around it while shooting at the Baron. In time it also fell and I won Hell's Arena. I was really excited about even getting this far into a UV game, so I took the reward and descended.

At this point, I really didn't think I would make it very far, so I never even got to level 4 before on UV. But armed with new strategies and some luck, I continued onward, although playing very cautiously. At level 6, I managed to find both both mods to make the speedloader pistol, which helped a whole lot in tight situations through the rest of the game because of the dualreload trick mentioned by Game Hunter's videos. A few levels down I manged to pick up an agility and power mod. Decided to stick the Power mod on a new pistol for more damage and put the Bulk pistol in the inventory for backup. Got the other mod needed for tactical boots, which I really needed since my movement speed was really sluggish at that time. I decided to kill everything but not release the Shambler, because I had times in normal HNTR/HMP games where it would just teleport away and heal all the damage I've done  with chainguns and rockets before coming back, I dare not to try it with only pistols.

A few levels down I encountered the Hellgate. At first I thought I can just use my normal tactic of running out, then when the walls come down retreat back into the room to use as a choke point. However, as soon as the walls lowered, I saw the big, scary, yellow V behind me, and I panicked. I really did not expect an Arch-Vile to be here this early at all, and I just ran to the right, closing the door, ran some more to see more walls come down, ran between the bright red Bs taking a lot of damage from their plasma projectiles, so I had to use a few large med packs just to get into the gate and escape the place. At this point I really thought I wasn't going to make it if things get this hard, and I was startig to run out of 10mm ammo, but my luck was about to change.

Descending the levels in Phobos Hell, I managed to re-stock on 10mm due to some lucky former captain spawns. A few levels later, I saw a bright green + in the bottom right corner of the map and discovered that it was a Nano Pack. Excited, I looked through my assemblies and noticed that Power Armor was something I can make with Nano packs, so I decided to save it until I found the other mod. Luck was on my side, because on the very next level near the entrance, there was a power mod just sitting there. Without a wasted second, I put together the Power Armor, and noticed that it had an awesome Armor rating of 8. I really felt invincible at this point. I maxed out on SoaG, SoaB, and had 2 traits in Finesse. All my actions cost about 1/3 of a second a turn, and I pretty much breezed through almost all the rest of the levels.

On level 24, I found a room just full of Arch-Viles and Mancubi, so I decided to skip it, even if that meant not discovering about half the level. However, in the room next to the stairs, there were two invulnerability globes, 2-3 spaces next to each other. However, I don't have a certain item in my inventory, and I didn't want to try my luck with the Vs and Ms only to die this far in. So I just took the two globes and go onto Phobos Arena.

The Cyberdemon died without a chance to damage me. Had to run through half the map to see it, but it fell before my invulnerability wore off. I was really satisfied with that run, especially since I ranked up to Major from that. However, that was an almost perfect opportunity for a chance at a full win, although I'm not sure how tough it is on UV. I missed the chance all because of not finding one item ( on a related note, never found a single phase device/homing phase device in the entire run, not sure what's up with that ). All in all, I'd say it was a really nice run for being the first victory on UV, especially in a Challenge mode. Well, I'm off to get that UAC Gold Badge now with my confidence restored.

( Sorry about the length and detail, especially in a challenge forum. But I really had a lot to say about this run. )

P.S. Game Hunter, if you're reading this, I really appreciate the videos you do about the game. I probably wouldn't have been able to do this or have the motivation for it without them. They really taught me a lot about the game and made the experience much more enjoyable

Edit: Fixed, beginning of my write-up got cut off
