Whew, this finally ended. My first 0.9.9.5 victory post. The first half of the game was quite challenging, my armors kept getting ruined and no decent weaponry until the Hell's Armory, where I got enough mods to make the assault rifle. There I also found Grammaton Cleric's Beretta and after disassembling it I got the Onyx Pack. I couldn't find another decent use for the thing and simply used it on my red armor along with a power mod shortly afterwards, and this thingy served me well until the very end! My beloved *sigh* City of Skulls was no problem as I used the assault shotgun which I kept for this level (and dropped later), and lost souls bit me for mediocre 2% damage. After getting OP red armor (turned later into AOP) the game was not that hard. The Vaults gave me a Jackhammer (disassembled, and got another Onyx Pack, *sigh*). The whole fun began at the level which all DoomRL players undoubtedly love.

The Mortuary. I have loads of large medkits, an AOP red armor, a nuclear plasma rifle with 5 mods, an assault rifle and 3 BFGs, one of which was bulk-modded thrice. Sounds promising, but it nearly ended in an EPIC FAIL. I quickly ran out of cells, then switched to the missile laucher and wasted all rockets to get rid of nasty Barons. The situation is ridiculous - I have many medkits, undestructible armor with protection of 6 and no other decent ways to kill stuff. I tried to use the hatred skull to zerk and quickly find the Archviles while I am still protected by the bloodlust. FAIL. Again, I quickly run away to the left side, get medkits and take out the nuclear plasma rifle. Oddly enough, I managed to kill some Arachnotrons and captains to get some ammo. The only weapon I had with enough ammo to make me last was the power-modded Assault Rifle. It was either an AI glitch or a RNG blessing or I don't know what, but after I slowly liberated the left portion of the map from all those A's, B's, O's and other bad letters of the alphabet, I was stormed by a squad of Captains. 10MM AMMUNITION, THOUSANDS OF IT. Captains were all killed at once and then, for the reasons unknown, the Archvile ran into my line of sight and quickly got leaded to death. I slowly advanced to the right side and saw that MOST of surviving enemies are bloody CAPTAINS. Again. They die and finally the last Archvile shows up. I never though the Assault Rifle can actually matter that much. With the Power mod it even knocked back Barons! After the massacre the place looked somewhat like this:

Later levels were actually like a sandbox, I just ran around and killed stuff as though I were at Phobos 3. The problem arose when it came to nuking Dis - I had no nuke! Fortunately, my nuclear BFG from the Mortuary did the trick. JC was not that tough, but the bastard gave me one unpleasant surprise at the end. The last cacodemon he summoned SURVIVED the finishing BFG blast and then, god damn it, no 100% kills at the end! This world is not fair :D

After taking a long break I returned to Chaosforge and saw a new version was out. This is my first decent run that could get me farther than the Bruiser Brothers (the first run ended at the Wall and my second doomguy met his demise at the Arena). The game was running quite smooth until the Wall, where I used up 5+ medkits, all my rockets and two blue armors, about 3 knights and barons could attack at once and I had to burn them with the Arena Master's Staff. I managed to go through the place alive, was almost killed by lost souls in the chamber near the Bruiser Brothers, but again emerged victorious.

Hell's Armory greeted me with a Nano Pack, which I decided to keep to make a Power Armour (this decision was stupid as I found no power mods), then I got a Sniper Pack which I wanted to use for a future turboblaster (never be too sure about your future in a roguelike, folks!). I also found an Acid Spitter, which I decided to keep for a case of emergency (I never actually used it against the enemy in this very run, though). My character was fried at the Spider's Lair.

This run led me to a brilliant idea: if you see 8 arachnotrons and a teleporter when a level begins, you run into a teleporter before anything else, and only AFTERWARDS you get your BFGs out, and NEVER VICE VERSA! Learn from my fail.

By the way, is it me or the Wall became much more challenging? New AI is cool, monsters no longer hang around the centre of the map.

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.4] Action keys sometimes don't work

The trouble: sometimes most keys used for actions, like opening the inventory, firing the weapon, swapping the weapon or reloading it become "stuck", i.e. they do not work at all no matter what I do. While I still can walk around using arrows or numpad keys, everything else is impossible to do (which is kinda annoying when you are in an arachnotron "twisted passages" cave. When the keys begin to work again, sometimes the game goes through last keys I attempted to press and VERY QUICKLY, ending up with opening inventory with the letter 'i' and then instantly using up the item assigned to the letter 'i'.

At first I blamed my keyboard but it turns out that it works fine in other applications like QIP or Firefox (otherwise how the hell would I type this message?).

It happens only with letters, as I understand, because if I press the spacebar, I will get the "unknown command" message - when the keys become "stuck" and I press them, nothing actually happens, no "unknown command". Arrows work fine - as I have already mentioned, during this unfortunate event I can freely walk around and hope my techguy's ass won't be zapped by arachnotrons while he is completely helpless.

Any ideas what is wrong here?

A ridiculous game it was, indeed. Finally I managed to beat the game on Hurt Me Plenty. Recommendations from previous thread were of great use, I would like to thank people once more for them. This time things went more smoothly in the beginning (without counting previous 10-15 stupid deaths), but sometimes everything went horribly wrong. To begin with, the beloved shambler's lever in Hell's Armory was accidentally destroyed and I had to leave the place without getting the main reward, that was a bit frustrating. After shooting several rockets into the indestructible wall, I left the place. Later my bad luck greeted me again when I wrongfully assembled a Nanofiber Armor using a very badly damaged red armor, and I ended up with a nanofiber red armor with AWESOME protection value of 1. Great. Special levels were also nice for me - the game did not spawn the Wall this time, neither could I see the Lava Pits. Ordinary levels in Hell were, hm, plain annoying. No decent equipment whatsoever, just stuff I don't actually need, like medical armor, or the Jackhammer from the Vaults (again, I had a cateye character). I was also lucky enough to have THREE arachnotron caves in "twisted passages", two of them IN A ROW. God, the random level generator sometimes makes things hilariously difficult.

When I was near the end, I had the Mortuary again, but this time I had one small and one large medpack and little ammunition, so thinking "screw that" I went forward without visiting it. At the cyberdemon's arena I tossed all BFG charges into him, and then had to resort to rockets, running like hell from him. They did little damage and he kept hitting me. Hellwave pack helped a lot here, at that time, I had only my small medpack left, and used that up immediately. Fortunately, I could dodge his final rockets that could actually kill me. It was more of a cowboy duel, whoever hits first wins. Somehow I won this round. I've got to try another character build.

I am a newbie player in DoomRL and Ultra-Violence turned out to be too much of a good thing for me (stupid deaths on level 3 or above), and I still try to beat the game on Hurt Me Plenty. This time everything was quite good despite the harsh beginning - I had a very damaged red armor but Hell Armory blessed me with a power pack and a nano pack after the Shambler was dealt with. With the Power Armor on and crafted guns the game was going more smoothly than expected... until the Mortuary. Only once I had managed to finish this level successfully, out of about ten times... This time I was stupid enough to think that I was ready to face the Mortuary. As you can see on the map, things ended VERY badly. When it all began I warped away using the Hell Staff and managed to kill a couple of viles with my BFG. I ran up to the left wall, shooting enemies who chased me. After refilling my health at lower left stairway, I realized that I had little ammunition left, and the enemies still kept coming. I attempted to grab a power cell at arachnotron's corpse to get enough charge for another BFG shot, but the cell got burned by an arch-vile who came with his guard, consisting of hell knights and hell barons. It was badly hurt, and I tried to use my last rocket on him with a Revenant's Launcher. A failed attempt - the rocket hit a baron in front of it, dealing little damage to the vile. A hellwave pack burned them down with the vile, but more barons, knights and cacodemons were still attacking. I even had to resort to the Super Shotgun, as nuclear plasma has little clip and all other ammo was already used up. With a cateye character this was the sign of his demise, which followed shortly.

The only question still remains, though: WHAT THE HELL DID I FORGET HERE? I already had one of the most powerful armors and I already had enough weaponry to pwn the Cyberdemon or even the big bad. This, I think, will remain a mystery forever, yet I want to see this place again - Simon Volpert composed an awesome track for this level, it suits the place perfectly.
