3 million points!  I don't even know how scoring is tabulated...

Yet another win with the Blaster - what can I say, ammo-free means that I can store double as many medkits and other lifesavers, and its amazing firing rate is rather beneficial too.  Actually I was pretty annoyed that it was another Blaster win that I played a few games with the intent of getting a (non-Ao100) win without the Blaster, which I did achieve.

One really "welp" moment was when I had an advanced rocket launcher and saw the missile launcher on the ground.  I had moved right next to the missile launcher, dropped my rocket launcher (to free up inventory space), walked onto the missile launcher, then was hit by a mancubus...destroying BOTH launchers (it was exposed to a corner around which was the unseen mancubus, oops)!  So I ended up with no rocket launching capabilities for quite a few floors until I found another one.

By now my build and my strategy for Ao100 is pretty much standard.  This time I actually got a unique pistol before even taking dual gunner, so I was able to invest in one more Ironman.  I've realized that dealing damage more quickly is even more of a priority than tanking in N! when corpses randomly revive around you so Son of a Bitch comes BEFORE any tanking traits.  The tanking traits won't save you in really sticky situations - they only serve to give you a chance to recover from minor mistakes, which are bound to occur in a 5 hour game (shorter than my 8 hour UV Ao100, once again my N! run was faster than my UV run, just like my vanilla wins).

I no longer value phase devices.  Even in the past I would only use them if I had 3 or more, so I could use another one immediately after teleporting to a bad situation, I had many N! Ao100 runs where even after using 3-4, I would still be in a worse situation than the one I originally wanted to get out of!  There are always crowds of monsters EVERYWHERE!  Yet I carried around so many of them, never using one.  Homing phase devices, however, are still very nice.  Especially when invulnerable.

Pistols are the primary weapons, rockets to create new holes in walls (and that's it - they're way too weak against archvile/mancubi/revenant hordes), and BFG's to clear such hordes - usually required 3 consecutive shots in the same area to really thin them out so I could resume with the pistols.

Doubled powerups and small health recovery helps offset the danger by a lot.  Berserking actually lasts a significant while, and having small globes/medkits heal >50% makes them much more worthwhile.

Badass always seems so nice on paper, but choosing between it and any of the traits already in my build?  It doesn't help as much.  That last level of ironman seems to work out better.

By the time I found the Beretta, there was no point in using it.  I bet it'd really kick ass in 6-fire mode with full Son of a Gun/Bitch though.

The BFG 10k is way overrated.  Whenever I tried it to use against the 'hordes' I mentioned earlier, the first shot would hit, and knockback, then the subsequent 4 shots wouldn't hit.  I ended up ditching it for the trusty regular BFG9000.

I actually was able to keep the Planeshift Armor for many levels, which is rare for me.  Usually I get my armor blown off in a few levels at most.

I can't get my >2mb demos to attach to the forum...disappointing.

A no-unique win - I wanted a no-blaster win after all those wins WITH the blaster.

Not much to comment on it - except that I was two spaces away from the Anti-Freak Jackal, which I almost never get, and it was blown up...
I also saw the Minigun in a vault of Cacodemons early on, but the 100 100mm ammo it would give me wasn't worth the risk of tackling the vault.  N! vaults are jam packed with an outrageous amount on monsters.

A final note - now that I've started playing lower difficulties again (to play chainguns and shotguns), I can't believe how many paranoid behaviors I still exhibit (for N! purposes).  Such as closing doors behind areas where I just killed a bunch of dangerous monsters, avoiding revisiting rooms, travelling through a level in certain ways to minimize the probability that I'll need to double back in order to find the stairs.

18
Right now we have a useful 'run in a direction until you hit dangerous terrain/are beside a door/spot a monster' command.

I'd request a further feature in which the player can engage 'run mode' whereby direction inputs would move the player quickly in various directions, as to cover ground quickly (in real life time), but all movement stops when a monster is spotted, and movement into dangerous terrain is also disallowed.  When a monster is spotted, I suppose the same command would be inputted to resume normal movement.

This is requested to facilitate going over areas of the level which you think you've mostly cleared out, but there may be a few monsters left.  Currently, the player will likely try to move quickly through the area, but if there actually WAS a monster around, the player's keystrokes are buffered and the player will end up doing several movements he/she probably wouldn't have wanted to had he/she realized the monster was there.  For me, often I'll take several hits (rather than stopping, picking a good position and firing had I realized the monster was there), and I've had promising games end due to this.

Of course the "lesson" for the player is to always maneuver carefully/slowly - but it's hard to stay disciplined when there's 100 levels to go through...

By the way, is the keystroke buffering a feature of the console, just like the ctrl+c thing?  (What I'm referring to is that if a player presses say up left down before even seeing the results of the first up, the left and down movements will be executed no matter what.)  Or can this be modified?

19
I've mentioned this before, but I'd like to request this again, especially now that I've got a lot of experience playing UV and N!

If the player aims at a position where there is no enemy and fires, then if the player chooses to fire again and has not moved, have the firing reticle appear at the same position, rather than on the player.

In the interests of survival, firing around corners is very important (and sometimes firing beyond sight - this is especially useful in thin corridors just to see if their are monsters further down), and almost always a player needs to fire more than once.  This features would greatly simply the amount of player keystrokes required.

Plus, it could be a doomrl.ini option if some people dislike it.

This is by far the interface modification I would appreciate the most to have implemented.

Holy hell N! Ao100 is hard...  When enemies are resurrecting faster than you can kill them, all you can do is run for the stairs.  But this is pretty difficult to do when they're in the middle of a room full of high damage, high health monsters...

I just didn't do enough damage per second to keep all the enemies down, and the usual 'close the door behind you' doesn't work when you need to move towards the monster crowd, not away.

The Beretta is better than I give it credit for.  Single mode is a decent upgrade compared to the pistol - the 18 shot magazine goes a LONG way, the damage boost is pretty nice too.  But now I'm 99% sure that son of a gun does apply with multishot mode, and I've found that triple-shot is a great way to take advantage of it.  Six-shot mode drains ammo too quickly, despite hitting really hard (it's accurate enough with a few eagle eyes).  Still, it wasn't strong enough to tackle the crowds...BFG would have been handy here!

I have a demo for this but I'll only attach it if someone wants it - I shouldn't use too much server space.

Requests For Features / Challenge combinations?
« on: July 24, 2009, 09:23 »
Instead of keeping every challenge separate, allow their effects to be combined together.  For example, AoI + AoMr. Must use medkits/phase devices on pickup, AND can only use pistols.

Of course some don't work well together, but it can introduce a lot of interesting combinations.

22
I was looking at the other Ao100/U and N! wins in the mortems to see how many there were and to feed my ego, and noticed that some things were really different before with past versions of DoomRL...but were wins easier or harder, and in what ways?

In the past you received experience for re-killing resurrected monsters, did that make N! a lot easier?  Or were there other factors that made evened things out?

And it seems the rocket did very little damage?  How did you kill anything with it?

Son of a gun had +2 damage per level...was there some real handicap to pistols back then?  I would love to have +6 bonus damage without needing levels of bitch.

Any other differences between versions which greatly altered the difficulty in getting a win, or generally how one played the game?

--------------------------------------------------------------
I am the victor.  I have achieved the victory!

Notes:
1 - So many more deaths occurred between this win and my previous landmark (the plain N! win).
2 - It's a bit embarrassing, but yet again the win was with the Blaster.  Can't be helped, a pistol build gets a significant boost with that Unique. If I found the Trigun or Beretta on a run I reckon I could probably win with those too.  Perhaps I'll try to win without a pistol Unique.
3 - Cateye changes the game once you get it.  Pre-Cateye, hide around corners and doors and fire.  Post-cateye, try to stay in the OPEN (while avoiding crowds).  I noticed from the leaks that this trait is gone in the next version?  Kornel do you dislike how this trait plays out?  The game doesn't become risk free, just different, after taking Cateye.  Perhaps you can turn it into a Master Trait rather than removing it entirely, and use trait restrictions to increase the danger a bit if someone wants to take this.
4 - Cateye + Intuition actually worked really well together.  Intuition I think is really valuable in Ao100 because in the last half of the game you're just trying to find the stairs without using up to many resources (or dying) and sensing where enemies are helps with that.  Cateye on the other hand helps a lot with the actual shooting.  Previously I played with only Intuition and it was really annoying to keep re-adjusting the firing cursor when shooting at intuition-dots.  Not to say your accuracy is greatly reduced when doing this without Cateye.
5 - Son of a gun + Son of a bitch also actually works pretty well together.  Another combination I didn't use before, as it seems that for a Pistol user, Son of a bitch is such a low % boost trait numerically, but having both of these really boosts the chance a pistol hit will knockback, which is pretty darn useful.
6 - There was a really scary situation at around floor 50 where I lost my Malek's Armor to a crowd of strong monsters, when a phase device doesn't move you away from danger things get rather messy.
7 - The biggest (unfair) risk in Ao100 after you've got through the initial weakling-player portion of the game is going down some stairs and finding yourself far from a door with >10 strong monsters in sight.
8 - I could've went for 100% (especially without ammo worries due to the Blaster), but I didn't feel like going through the additional work (and the non-trivial risk) of clearing some of the later floors - I just wanted the win.

There's not much I want to do further with this game for now; I'm not particularly enthusiastic about the other modes, as they seem to be just various hinderences to the player's capabilities.  I'm more of a fan of overpowering the player but also upping the danger to match.  So I'll probably play a few mundane N! runs while we all wait for the new version.  Hopefully that one will be mod-able!

Sidenote - perhaps N! Ao100 should allow saving every 25 floors.  That way you could leave the game after 1.5-2 hours rather than having to slog through 6-8 hours in one go.

Thanks Kornel for the game - I enjoyed it a lot.  Actually it's inspired me to start rolling my own shooting-focused roguelike.  Hopefully I'll have something playable soon.

I was really surprised to come upon the Blaster so quickly after finding it in a previous run - but I'm not complaining.  It really meshes with my playstyle, and allows me to be a lot more reckless - even standing out in the open shooting (lone) enemies.  It also frees up loads of inventory slots that ordinarily would go to ammo.

Once again I collected a small stack of mods and ended up ditching them one by one for other things.  Advanced weapons are so much more mod-friendly than ordinary ones; but it's rare you get an advanced weapon that matches your already-determined build.
Maybe regular weapons should be allowed 2 mods + 2 more for each level of whizkid?

Useless planeshift boots - I already had some boots that gave me +10% speed (and -10% knockback), using the planeshift boots would have given me 5% more speed but a knockback penalty.  I love the boots mobility mod.

Badass worked really well with nightmare - since all the powerups healed double as much, there was a much higher tendency to go >100% health, so slower erosion really allowed you to take advantage of that extra health.

Once again 3 Tan + 3 Iron really rocked, especially when my armor kept getting destroyed very quickly.

A close call on Phobos Hell 7:  was a little too greedy for experience and was faced with a mass of archviles, mancubi, barons of hell, cacodemons, and revenants.  Even after pasting them with 5 BFG shots and consuming 3 large medpacks - I had to retreat with a homing phase device.

Again I didn't use pistols against Cyberdemon...I probably could have, but whatever, I killed him just the same.

I took a lot fewer turns than my UV win; I'm getting more comfortable playing at high difficulty levels now.  Of course part of the reason for the high number of turns in the UV win was because I kept running back and forth in the spider's lair waiting for the Arachnotrons to one by one randomly teleport in front of me at the side of the level.

Oh - and respawning Anarchnotrons supplied a ton of Power Cells.

The Blaster is hands-down my favorite Unique - wish I could have it every time!  Dual-gunning with the Beretta actually turned out LESS useful than expected - using the Blaster alone was better than pairing it with the Beretta in single-shot mode, and on any of the multiple-shot modes, it went through ammo way too quickly and wasn't accurate enough - I eventually abandoned the thing after running out of ammo, despite having over 800 rounds at one point.  I used 3 phase devices in the vaults and still didn't get to enter the middle...and there was a Unique there.  There was a Unique in the lava pits too, but my envirosuit ran out before I even got halfway across and I had to abandon my pursuit with a homing phase device.  The Nuclear Plasma Rifle is pretty useless for my playstyle - and it recharges so slowly.

The arena is too hard to tackle that early in UV, at least for me, so that greatly reduces the chance of getting a rocket launcher...so I had to skip the wall.  I really love the backpack though...

I'm still curious as to whether or not son of a gun bonuses come into play when the Beretta is in multishot mode?  I'm guessing it does, but even then the Blaster was better alone.  I could've taken a level of Badass instead, which would have been nice to reduce the knockback from all the explosions that hit me.

3 TaN and 3 Ironman are fabulous - you can take so much more damage; a lot of situations are far less dangerous, and even if you don't have enough armor, you can still survive.

First time I seriously used Cateye (rather than Intuition).  Since I went for durability first, I couldn't wait 3 levels to get the benefit of 'telepathy'.  And it turns out I wouldn't gain 3 further levels in any case.

Also - I almost never run into thermonuclear bombs - and never with an invulnerability on floor 24 (although I did get the latter alone this time - first time that happened to me, made Cyberdemon a snap).  Wish I could take a crack at JC.

Next up - U/Ao100!  I'm going to start tackling that again.  Most of the other challenge modes don't particularly interest me.

I figure the experienced players knew this already, but I thought I'd throw this out to those who are still frustrated by this.  Use run (comma key) to try to run into the item.  Run won't let you step into hazardous terrain, so if you cannot run to the spot where the item is, there's lava or acid underneath.

Before him 150 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 126 of those were killed.
4 of those were killed by something unknown.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 14 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 5 souls claim to have killed him...
5 killed the bastard and survived.

!@#$^$%^#@#$#$%^&... If only I had done things differently (i.e. medpack -> hellstaff), or at the very least, put on that gothic armor I had been saving!

I had an amazing run.  The blaster early on helped me out a lot. (I always choose pistols regardless, so it was a huge boost.)  For those of you who don't think much about the blaster compared to other uniques, look at its firing speed!  You have the firing rate of two pistols in one weapon (and no dualgunner 20% penalty at that).  And you never need to stop to reload (unless berserk), can save perhaps up to 6 inventory slots for ammo, and +1 accuracy to boot.  With the blaster I could forgo dualgunner and get intuition one level earlier.

Hell staff - I didn't use it that often at first, but once I got below floor 50, it became a staple.  Once I teleported into the midst of 5 mancubi though, that was almost an early death (floor 70 or so?).  I tended to avoid using the unique slow armors - if I moved around in them, I'd get pegged by lots of shots.  Any other armor evaporated very quickly - tough as nails was really helpful.

Whizkid - I regret taking it.  But I suppose I had no idea I would come upon the missile launcher - before picking it up, I had a S3R3D1 advanced rocket launcher.  Actually that made me hesitate to take the missile launcher but the accuracy (for firing with intution and hoping for a hit) and 4-clip magazine convinced me, even though my firing rate would be slower overall, and my damage and splash lower.  Juggler is much better than I initially thought; it turns it it's very useful to switch between your bread and butter weapon and a rocket launcher without giving the enemy a turn.

Any time a crowd of enemies had a few arch-viles around, it was really painful.  I would fire a dozen rockets into the crowd and hope that I took out the arch-vile before attempting pistol kills.  There were more than enough rockets to go around though, with revenants and mancubi aplenty.

I hit xp level 19 on floor 41 - lots more floors to just slog through without any incentive to kill unless it was in my way.  Nonetheless, very often enemies WERE in my way, so I had to kill most of them anyways.  Ended up taking dualgunner really late as I found the Trigun.  After this run I'm not that enamoured of it, actually - the 2 second reload time is a lot.

Tough as nails is very nice for survival, and paired with ironman, can really stretch your health out a long way, when medpacks or powerups are scarce.

Arena levels became very very scary, especially after floor 80.  As you can see, I was killed in one (one step away from the stairs...).

Trait-wise, though, I'm mostly happy about what I picked.  In hindsight I'd probably forgo 1 finesse and the whizkid, in favor of one more ironman and one reloader.  Reloader mainly for rocket launcher use, but in this case it would have been useful for the trigun as well.

I don't particularly like the Nuclear weapons - especially the plasma rifle.  They recharge so slowly!  At least the BFG you can use it in a pinch for a big punch.  I didn't find the Railgun particularly useful - rockets (or missiles) could hit multiple enemies in far more situations than the railgun could, and even when there was a line of enemies down a narrow hallway, I would need 3 railgun shots to kill a bunch of them (out of sight, using intuition).  The first two levels of intuition are still useless though, but I still prefer 3 trait cost for intuition over 2 trait cost for cat's eye...

Finally, thanks to Xael for sharing your player.dat - I probably wouldn't have unlocked this even now on my own.

I actually got up to 19/2% experience - too bad all those kills after level 19 didn't contribute anything.

If there's any mode where the player could use more ammo storage, Ao100 would be it.  Could we start with the backpack or somehow be able to obtain one?

My first win on hard, once again with my beloved pistols.  Numerically I still think max trait pistols are better dps/hitrate than max trait chaingun?  The only downside is you can't keep another weapon in the prepared slot.

Also, I didn't get any unique pistols, which usually make a huge difference in a pistol marine's power.  Lava pits at lev 23 were pretty useless, I should have just skipped it.  Chickened out and used a few shots of BFG/rockets on Cybie - how would you deal with him with pistols?  Plus his sight range seems to be 9 or something...hiding around corners doesn't help that much?

I think intuition's pretty useful - you can fire around corners without being spotted - the only pain is always having to re-aim the firing reticle/cursor after each shot.  You need to keep a lot of ammo in reserve to do this though; lots of missed shots:  I usually try to keep 600 rounds all the time, didn't see the wall this game so it took a lot more space.  It's doubly annoying when you realize you're not making any progress because an arch-vile is resurrecting what you just shot ("Hey, how come the number of dots is still the same!").

I've never seen an invul globe on the 24th floor!  Hrmmm....
