Post Mortem / Re: [0.9.10.|H|Sc] Sniping is harder now
« on: September 28, 2021, 10:02 »
I really would love to find a good sniper build, but I can't see a way to do it. I recently finished the game on nightmare, after a lot of attempts, and thinking about it, there are several serious problems with a really good sniper build:
1)as you say, you must have line of sight, which obviously puts you in the firing line. I always carry toxic grenades/smoke grenades . One solution would be to have a sniper rifle that can hit very accurately beyond your limit of sight, if you know where a monster is. Perhaps a skill that allows you to do this would be good
2) Sniper rifles don't hit hard enough. No sniper rifle can match the damage output of a chaingun, or a plasma gun. They are great early game, I tend to use sniper rifles for the first 1/3 to 2/3 of a run, but by late Io or Dante, they become ineffective relative to other options.
3) Sniper rifles suck in close quarters. (I see in this run you got around this by having balance L2 on your sniper weapon.) But you have to solve the problem of poor close quarters damage. (The other way to solve it is by using hellrunner.)
Good run. Well done on solving these problems in your run.

Thanks thelaptop. Much appreciated for fixing my post and for the encouragement.
You mention inattentiveness. I go off on these trains of thought while playing and get myself killed regularly. Or else, I tend to be way too conservative with my health use. "Yeah I have 15 hp and 5 medikits, but I might need them later and I can dodge these guys shooting at me and wait until I find a health orb."
Nek minit...
"Dammit one of those zombie grunts shot me."

So my first full win on Nightmare. I used a Marine with the "Survivalist" master trait, which saved my butt exactly twice in the run. Ironman was really helpful, as the higher your total HP, the higher your HP's are restored on Survivalist.
A little luck here and there, mostly with the drops. Things really fell into place.
Having found "Avalanche," in the Containment area on Europa, this made a massive difference. It meant that I could carry no ammo, and could fill those slots up with medical items, and grenades. (Avalanche is a super special plasma gun.)I also found Duramesh scout armor, which is indestructible. Also very useful on a run like this. I had the CRI bio launcher also, which allowed me to deal with those pesky medusas. By shooting a medusa with a rocket that releases a ball of toxin cloud, it broke line of sight, as well as damaging the medusas, so I could just fire one or two of those into the medusa's path, and they would just get disoriented and die.
The cryoreaver's claw was great too. Between that slowing enemies with chill, and maxxed out hellrunner, I was able to avoid most of those run-ending "open-a-door-and-there-is-three-exalted-cryoreavers" scenarios. the Jackhammer was very useful midgame, but wasn't used at all once I hit Dante.
Anyway, a very pleasing win. Perhaps not as hard as some challenges, but I am still pretty happy with it.
Thanks for a great roguelike. :)
[edit] sorry I don't remember how to post mortems properly, though I used to know. Don't remember at this point. :)

Bug Reports / Couple of bugs I have encountered (JH 0.9.5 Advance)
« on: February 02, 2021, 06:09 »
Just a couple of bugs/thoughts I wanna share.
-When you gib imps with the 'unstable' perk, you still take damage from the explosion, even though there is no explosion animation. I would have thought that if you can gib them when one gets close, that would be a way to avoid the explosion. (If you know you can't avoid them, then pull out your biggest weapon and hope you can gib them as a last resort to avoid the exploding damage.)
-on Nightmare, respawned imps with the 'fire' perk never actually throw any fireballs.
-Sometimes if a zombie blows themselves up by punching a barrel, (as they do!) their weapon does not spawn, only their ammunition spawns. I have had this happen several times.
Here is an example of this happening. This is level 1, and you can see some 44 ammo all on its own. The zombie carrying this ammo punched the barrels you can see exploded, blew them up, and spawned 44 ammo, but no revolver/hunting rifle to match.
-The game crashes for me if, as a technician I open up the 'broadcast' or 'hack' menu, (by hitting '7' on a previously hacked robot, or by walking into a hacked bot to bring up their options menu,) and then hit 'escape' while in menu, the game crashes for me.
-[edit] Forgot to mention that sometimes on nightmare, after you have activated the 'access recon' branch of the control panel, and activate the thing which shows you all enemies as red dots on your minimap, if a monster respawns after you have activated this, the spawned monster does not show as a red dot on the minimap. Is this intentional, or an oversight. I mention it for the sake of completeness.
-I am hopeful that the devs can make some of the weapons carried by the zombies more obvious as to what they are carrying. Please please please put a red dot sight on the hunting rifle or something. It really looks just like an auto rifle. And ideally I would like to be able to see what weapon a sombie is carrying before I get hit for 24 damage. Auto rifles you stay in cover and shoot back, but hunting rifles, you really want to lure them close where their hit percentage drops a lot, and shoot them point blank. (I know this is not a bug, but I really hope this happens. Hunting rifles regularly ruin my nightmare runs. Also the fact that it is impossible to tell whether a zombie is carrying a revolver or a regular pistol. Rocket launchers are also hard to tell sometimes.) I know this isn't a bug, but it really is something I would love to see changed to help players when they are making those tactically important decisions. Cheers!
Wonderful little game, don't wanna be critical, just bringing these to the relevant people's attention. Sorry if any/all of these have already been posted. Wishing the developers all the best with it.

Nightmare! / Re: [N!|ArchAoHu|21%|YAVP] I DID IT! :D (Everyman Angelic)
« on: May 23, 2020, 10:27 »
Just posting to acknowledge an astonishing achievement. I have not even finished regular angel of humanity. I have achieved one angelic badge ever:
(link https://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,8300.0.html) So huge congrats. I can only hope that Karl Jobst makes a youtube video about this epic achievement. It is certainly deserving of such attention. Well done.
I have been playing quite a bit of JH recently, so DRL has taken a bit of a back seat. But it is one of that great games that you can always come back to.

General Discussion / In what universe is the Technician overpowered?
« on: March 24, 2020, 12:01 »
So I have finished the game twice on UV with the Marine. Which means that I don't totally suck at the game. And I can't get anywhere near finishing it with the Technician. I seem to take too much damage, continuously, incidentally. With the Marine, I can offset the damage with "Incoming" for rockets or barrels, and the "Medic" Perk and the health boost at the start of each level to carry me through.
But the Technician gets none of these. And I don't seem to be able to get deep enough into the game to get the high end Technician abilities going.
What do you guys recommend, in terms of weaponry, skill choices (I have been using "Hacker" to spot enemies and kill them outside sight range with a Hunting Rifle or a 9mm auto rifle etc. What builds do you guys use to be any good with a Technician? Any suggestions or tips appreciated.
Thanks so much to the devs for such a cool and unique game. Cheers.

OOoooooh, Sereg. Of course. That is how it is done. I knew about overloading. But it never occured to me to use it to access JC. The 8 times I have defeated JC since I reinstalled 2 months ago. (And had never even known he existed in the 8 years of playing prior to that,) were because i found a nuke and had the lava element.
Thanks so much for making the connection.
Everything I know about this game I have worked out, but since I started on these forums in the last few months, I am kind of addicted to learning about this game and finding all its dirty little secrets.
Thanks so much Sereg and Torm for the support.

So that's what sereging is!! Thank you for the clarification.
Also allow me to say that I think being able to do something, even if you didn't invent it, is still a skill. If I could sprint 100 metres in 10 seconds, it would still be a thing, even if you copied Usain Bolt.
THanks for the link to IcyTux' thread. Some really good runs and info in there.
One question. On this run, Icy manages to access JC without having a nuke or a trigun at the spider mastermind. How did he do that? I didn't think that was possible without nuking the Spider Mastermind.
Cheers and thanks for the help! :)

Nightmare! / Re: [N!] [AoSh+AoOC] First Ever Angelic Badge!!!
« on: August 02, 2018, 07:23 »No apologies needed at all! Diamond and Angelic badge mortems are always worth posting. Congrats! :D (Besides, it's nice to liven up the forums a bit) :)
Yeah, between the boots and the tech mod on the shotgun, it looks like you mitigated the Army of the Dead's biggest drawback, lack of speed. Good move. :)
And I'm impressed that you recreated my technique against the Mastermind. At the time, I was kind of flailing around in hopelessness when I hit on that strategy. It's nice to know that it's reproducible.
As for the nukage switch, somewhere, I have a mortem where I did something similar in an AoOC game where level 1 had an armed nuke and my starting room had an invulnerability sphere, so I waited out the nuke, grabbed the invulnerability at the last second, and immediately went up multiple levels. I'll link it later when I'm in front of my computer.
Thanks Torm. :) Yeah I hadn't consciously thought to myself "An Army of the Dead build needs to move quicker and fire quicker," I was thinking more on a global scale, as in "Moving and shooting faster is a good thing." But you are right though. Army of the dead is awesome but you are slow. I have been playing standard nightmare games as an army of the dead marine, and I keep getting shredded at the hellgate. You cannot stand and shoot your way out of that trap with all those nightmare creatures, and running away is a very risky proposition. I can bypass this with phase devices, or other speed items, but even the steel boots with AA mods won't save you against a room full of nightmare demons.
And yes your technique against the mastermind did more than streamline the run. I would have failed without it. The mastermind kept sniping me when I shot her, and I had used up 3 large med packs to get her to 'heavily wounded' and I was thinking "dammit I can't fail now," and then I remebered "WWTD?" (What would Torm do? lol) and I remembered that trick. Such a good trick.
Cheers bro. Appreciate your support and grateful that people like you have blazed a trail for noobs like me to follow. :)
Don't worry about spam - keep the mortems coming. Congratulations on your first Angelic win - you'll find that many of the higher difficulty challenges are rather dependent on key item finds like those boots, so when you get something nice like that, be sure to play extra carefully... as you no doubt did here.
Looking forward to the next one ;)
Dude you are so right about finding a good item and being extra careful. As you say those items will make or break a run. THis game does need skill, but some luck too. Only a couple of attempts prior to this one, I found a Super Shotgun on level 1 of Hell, and boy did that make an Army of the Dead build really powerfulk. But sadly I died just after getting The Army of the dead powerup. Stupid death, and that should have been the run that got me the badge.
But you know how it goes. A manc caught me in an open area. And that was that.
Impressed with your Longinus Diamond badge win on youtube. Working out the pattern of when the Angel of Death can hit you or not. Very impressive to watch.

Nightmare! / [N!] [AoSh+AoOC] First Ever Angelic Badge!!!
« on: July 31, 2018, 10:45 »
First off. apologies if I am being what is considered 'spammy' on these forums. I won't post every mortem, but I have posted several that were major achievements for myself, whom I consider a moderately skilled player, but not really elite like some of you guys.
So First ever angelic badge!!! In like 8 years of playing I think: The shottyman angelic badge, for completing AoSH and AoOC on Nightmare! I also, without planning to, got the daredevil diamond badge for completing AoOC on nightmare with 80% kills. Sweet. I tend to do well on shotgun based challenges. My first ever completed nightmare run was on AoSh, even before I had completed the standard game on N!. (In truth, I still haven't completed the standard game on nightmare.)
Finding Nyarlototeps boots was far more of a help than I would have thought, as they allowed me to run across some pretty dangerous areas, as well as that speed boost. They really went from being a nice find to being crucial to the success of the run. In one place I had to run through a lot of lava to get to the stairs, in several other places I was able to stand on the lava behind cover to fight enemies that would have got really good firing angles on me otherwise.
Also of interest, on a previous attempt, I literally started right next to a switch. So I used it, and it flooded the level with nukage. Always pays to read the level feeling text, which I always forget to. Anyway, I stepped into the nearest doorway, and literally went up 5 levels in a couple of seconds, as everything on the level died died in the nukage over the next few turns.. Easiest 5 levels I ever got.
Much gratitude to the many insanely skilled players on these forums. Without lurking on these forums the last couple of months, I would never have seriously contemplated nightmare runs, and never seriously considered chasing down angelic badges. But I have learned that not only are these challenges even theoretically possible, many, if not all, have actually been completed.
And also thanks to Tormuse. While watching his very impressive ArchAoHu N! run on youtube, I learned the trick of luring the spider mastermind up to the northern section of Dis, where you can trap her in (in my case) a two squares wide corridor, so she cant keep strafing outwards to get the wider angle required to get a shot on you.
Cheers everyone.
Anyway, to wit:

Thanks Sereg. haha I have seen your name behind any number of high end achievements on this game, so props, and thanks for your encouragement. Yeah I literally got to the point where I had to just run through the last 10 levels as not even 200 rounds or plasma and 200 bullets would make much difference to all the enemies, especially when you cannot set them up in doorways and they are just going to respawn.
I hit level 25 MAX on level 82 of the run, so little incentive to keep killing everything from that point. Only did enough killing to find more resources.
I hope to be able to gain some high end badges, as even after like 8 or 9 years of playing, never seriously playing nightmare until the last few months. Loving it, should have done it sooner.
I hope Jupiter Hell has this level of variety and challenges. Looking forward to it.
Thanks Sereg. :)

Hi Torm. Yeah Scavenger is probably my favorite DRL class to build. Lots of mod packs lots of cool weapons. I think the most fun I have had on this game was with a nanomachic tristar blaster. Right up until I killed myself with it. Probably a bad idea given how much damage you can do yourself with it haha.
And I am sure you are right about improving my skill level some more. When I said I had *some* skill, I wasn't hin\ting that I had lots of skill and was being fake modest, I was saying that I don't have that much skill. Some of those really hard badges that you and others have are way beyond me. Truthfully I am not sure what I can do to improve my skillset, other than concentrating very hard and making sure that every move is considered and thought out. I am much better now, since I started playing nightmare, and especially since I started playing ArchAoHu, but too often I do things like enter a crate room, discover it is clear as I carefully make my way across it, pick up items in there, and then, because I think it is clear, I rush move back to the way I came in, and unbeknown to me, a baron has entered the room behind me and rips my head off because I keep moving towards him because of the 'stored' move thing. Death ensues. Soom followed by silent mumbling and a ragequit haha.
But I don't really know what I could do to play better. I don't say that arrogantly, as if there is no way I can get better, I say that as in there must be ways to get better, I am just not sure how. So if you want to refer me to any videos, forum topics, posts etc etc where the really high end skillset stuff is discussed, totally open to that. I feel like I know the mechanics of cover/shooting/movement/items/etc really well. but high end tactics I am very happy to learn more.
I don't mind at all you giving constructive criticism to my playing style. If anyone has earned the right to offer advice on this game, it would be you. Well obviously there are plenty of really good players who have spent years working their way through some of the high end challenges here. I am but a noob relative to their experience and skill.
But even after years of playing I still really enjoy this game, and am interested to crack a few high end badges.
Thanks for the reply Torm. Much appreciated.

Nightmare! / [N!] Ao100 [YAVP] First Centurial Nightmare win: Scavenger Technician.
« on: July 28, 2018, 06:36 »
Second ever Nightmare Victory and First nightmare Ao100 Victory.
The first twenty levels were really hard. I had to put points into eagle eye and SoB to survive combat on those early levels.
Ammo was consistently a problem, as I chewed through my main ammo types, plasma and bullets very quickly, as my gatling gun, minigun and hyperblaster were all very ammo hungry. Rockets were mainly used for corpse disposal. And other than the first twenty levels, my focussed double shotty was used in emergencies when other types of ammo were depleted, and I would fill up the inventory slots with shells.
And even then, on the last ten levels I virtually had to sprint through them, as I did not have the ammo to effectively fight and win against packs of cyberdemons, shamblers, lava elementals, nightmare archs, nightmare arachnotrons etc etc.
Very lucky to find an onyx and a nano on the levels, I did not create those from breaking down weapons. Cerebus armor with an extra power mod pack. 10 protection. Very useful. ON Red armor with the extra 25 fire resistance also very helpful. :)
The real hero of the story here is the fact that I was able to generate two firestorm mod packs from scavenger, which enabled me to build a biggest fucking gun from a nuclear BFG. So everytime I ran into trouble, I simple made half of any given level disappear. Ridiculously OP, and thankfully it was nuclear, as there is no way to maintain ammo consumption of 100 cells at a time, along with general plasma cells useage for my plasma gun in general combat. There wasn't enough inventory space to carry the ammo for it, along with all the other necessary items for surviving from level to level.
But if I ran into trouble, and I did pretty regularly, the out game the nuclear biggest fucking gun, which was always in the second weapon slot to always keep it charging, (which meant for the majority of the run I carried ammo boxes only for storage and didn't use them in the second weapon slot in actual combat.)
I maintain that these items are indispensable for a successful nightmare run:
-phase devices: for those times when the right combination of monsters is simply not survivable without it.
-homing phase devices: for those levels where an armed nuke appears, or where the level is flooding with lava/nukage and you dont have a rad suit/protective boots/etc, or where the level is simply not survivable otherwise.
-Shell box: when you get flooded with demons/nightmare demons, you cannot reload your shotty quick enough to survive, unless you have lots of points in hellrunner/finesse/reloader/shottyman. Assuming that you do not yet have really powerful gear, shell boxes will allow you to survive onslaughts, particularly of demons/nightmare demons/pain elementals/agony elementals
-enviro suits: hit the wrong switch and flood the level with lava. And you dont yet have enviro boots or cerebus boots. enviro suits are your friend.
SO in short, lots of luck and *some* skill. Maybe.
Pretty pleased with the result. Cheers. And thanks for the inspiration everyone. I never seriously thought I could be doing nightmare runs until I started lurking on these forums and came to understand that it was possible and achievable with patience and skill. And a little luck.
First Centurial Diamond badge and first Dervis Medallion!
Interestingly enough, this game gave me the Centurial Diamond badge for completing Ao100 on Nightmare, but it also gave me the Centurial Platimum badge for completing Ao100 on UV also...

Post Mortem / Re: [HMP] Standard Game [YAVP] 27 medals/badges
« on: July 22, 2018, 04:32 »Nice! That's a lot of badges, indeed.
Unfortunately, Gunrunner can't be used in combination with nanomachic weapons, as it blocks Whizkid.
Thanks Defazer. Yeah. If I ever used gunrunner regularly, I would have known that you can't use it with whizkid. haha shows how often I use gunrunner.
This game may be the only time I have used it.
Cheers defazer.
I can't really say I'd "recommend" it per se, since I tend to have a slow, calculating playstyle, whereas, as you pointed out, Gunrunner is all about charging in with guns blazing. I used the trait to great effect in ArchAoRA games here and here, since those are games where speed is super important, but I wouldn't normally use it otherwise.
That being said, it could make an ArchAo666 stairdive interesting, blasting everything out of your way as you run straight to the exit level after level. :)
Another smart tactical choice. gunrunner is perfect for a AoRA run. See I wouldn't even have thought of that. And yeah like you I think the reason I never used it much is because you have to expose yourself to get the benefits of that particular master trait. And I do have a more cautious style. Notcautious enough yet, as ArchAoHu is teaching me. Repeatedly. :D
