Uniques, advanced weapons and mods pretty much everywhere. If you're wondering what happened to the Necroarmour, it was an Arena Level with a Revenant/Vile pack on one side and Mancubus/Vile pack on the other, I tried fighting it out instead of cutting my losses and running away (phase device moved me 4 squares away as usual).

I'm pretty sure The Wall is guaranteed to show up... in my experience the only Special Levels which don't seem to show up that often are Hell's Armory and Spider's Lair.

Running 'with , key' doesn't have any in-game advantages over regular movement. However you'll find that it will save you some needless hits since it automatically stops whenever there's a monster in range (and reduces your keybashing a bit).
Cautious and tired give no bonuses / penalties at all. Tired is just there so you know you can't enter Running mode again.

CyberAngel
You taken so many battle injuries and had so many cybernetic limb replacements you don't even know how much of you is human anymore. You're faster and stronger than any other marine out there but noone can give back your good looks. Oh, and the maintenance is terrible.
You start the game with equipped armor Cybernetic [4/4] 200% +20% speed, -50% knockback. You can't remove this armor and if it gets destroyed you lose the game. In compensation, you can use green, blue, red and unique armors for 10, 20, 40 and 50% armor repair respectively. Good luck.
P.S. - The numbers will need tweaking, so don't take these as final. Increasing the Cybernetic to [6/6] or the armor repair seem like real possibilities. Anyway, stay away from Barons and Acid barrels :P.

« on: September 13, 2009, 13:50 »Sounds like angel of berserk and you can also use a shotgun.Advanced shotgun... Heh!
It just doesn't seem as special as Marksmanship or Berserk.
Maybe if the sergeant on level 1 drops an advanced shotgun instead of regular?
Now seriously, I don't think Angel of Shotgunnery would be a good addition. The best challenges are those that dramatically change the gameplay (AoB) or balance a disadvantage with a fun advantage (AoMr). Playing with shotguns only in my opinion is too small a disadvantage to allow for a cool advantage to make this a fun challenge.

Requests For Features / Re: [Balance] The BFG - Too Awesome to Use
« on: September 06, 2009, 05:52 »
I always saw the BFG from Doom and Doom2 like a very powerful cone fire weapon disregarding number of targets, very much like the shotguns work in DoomRL. In my opinion a BFG behaving like a double shotgun (maybe just a little bit wider, longer range, and capable of destroying walls) with more than 50 damage on a point blank shot would feel a lot more Doomish* to me.
*Doomish like in 'this BFG shot will be that much sweeter if i can shoot it to the FACE'.

Discussion / Project idea - Tileset Front for DoomRL
« on: September 05, 2009, 18:23 »
I'm really not aware of how easy this would be to accomplish nor how far the recoded DoomRL v1 is. I'm asking opinions from the computer/programming wizards in the forum to see if this is worth investing time on.
The idea:
DoomRL has a graphical output consisting of a 80x25 ASCII; if we create a second party program capable of reading that ASCII output and apply a Tileset based on it, we'd be able to have some sort of a graphical interface.
What the program would need:
- The ability to read the ASCII output from DoomRL.exe
- The ability to pass input onto the game
- A graphical window covering enough room for a 80x25 Tileset. (This is very discussable) For a 16x16 Tileset this would make 1280x400.
- A fast enough refresh rate without hoarding the processor.
Specifics:
- A full text tileset (multicolor) for whenever the game is on the menus, etc.
- A second tileset with the graphics: all the characters capable of appearing on the play screen on all colors possible (including Berserk and Invulnerable)
- The condition to apply the second tileset would be on the output on the bottom line of the game (it always has common elements*). If that element is true, then lines 3 to 22 would use the alternative tileset.
After this is working (or not) There would be a lot of small extras which would be good to add.
I'd like to know if anyone finds any big issues with the idea and, better yet, if someone with programming skills could help starting this. If you can make the program work I'll supply all the tiles needed.
* The common elements on the play area i find easy to spot are:
- Line 24, Pos 1: "Health:"
- Line 25, Pos 62: "Phobos Base", "The Chained Court", etc.
Having different tilesets based on which level it is would be awesome later on but I'd already be happy if this worked with a single tileset.

That was a really good effort considering this is one of the most difficult challenges in the game. If you made it to the stairs you should have been able to win the game.
