I was fighting the Shambler and hauling ass toward the exit on AoRA; the game says 40 seconds left on the countdown. Shambler kills me. Game crashes and spits this at me:

"DoomRL Crashed!
Reason: LuaError: beings[].OnAction -- Lua error: lua/beings.lua:897: Object expected as parameter 1!"

I'm running Windows 7. Error log attached.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I still hadn't earned my shotgun badges back, and shotgun runs are just about the easiest to do (At least in my opinion), so I took the time to run one quick. Much fun was had.

First, Enviroboots are awesome. Eat shit, damage floors!

Second, this run had a perfect kill rate EXCEPT in the Mortuary. I love the Mortuary, it's my favorite level, but damn is it a drain on resources. I went in with two fire skulls and a shockwave pack and still only was able to clear out the left side. Looking at the kills I had, the right side had something like 70 goddamn monsters parading around, so I was probably better off having left when I did, but that dropped what would have been a perfect run of demon genocide to less than 90% kills. And it's not like the Assault Shotty was really that helpful compared to my combat shotty; I really should have just skipped it and kept my kill rate up.

Other than that everything went damn smooth. The only complaint I had was that the game threw about a billion Agility mods at me but only one two power mods and only one tech mod, but it made up for it by giving me onyx. I love unbreakable armor, it makes everything better.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The Mortuary was the highlight of this trip. Holy SHIT was that a slugging match. I went in loaded for bear with a the Longinus Spear, a Red Power Armor, and a bulk-modded Cerebus Armor. I had a fuckton of health, and a pile of large medikits. I was frigg'n prepared, unlike last time I ducked in and tripped my way into a victory.

I darted to the right and managed to find/kill four of the 'Viles, but they had been busy and the resulting pile of monsters managed to eat my entire Cerebus Armor. When I finally turned west to deal with the last one, he'd had plenty of time to revive a fuckton of monsters and it took forever to find him. My health wasn't actually much of a problem; Vampire is disgustingly effective in the Mortuary. And at that point I'd swapped to my Power Armor; I'd carve up a few dozen monsters, then use whatever was left of my berserk to retreat toward cover and let my armor recharge. I could hide in the middle building, killing whatever chased me into the doorway, without letting myself get overwhelmed or giving them enough time and crossfire to kill my armor. And power armor recharges quickly enough that the 'vile couldn't revive as much of his army as I could carve away, and eventually he stopped keeping his army between the two of us. After I tore the last 'vile in half, I could take my time in luring baddies away from the pile and killing them a handful at a time. It was a hell of a lot of fun, frantic as it was.

So I managed to collect the Longinus Spear, the Angelic Armor, and the Trigun. Super angel action!

Too bad you can't actually USE the trigun or the nuclear plasma/BFG's alternate fire modes on AoB. I never found a nuke, despite having the lava element. That's twice now I've been entirely prepared for a full win, but didn't have a nuke option to open the path.

Anyway, between this run and the Tyson Sunrise run I've gone from an Demon Corporal to a Cacodemon Warrant Officer. Pretty fruitful for two runs.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I made a few half-hearted attempts at AoB Technician, aiming for a malicious blades build and earning my Berserker badges back, but I was never lasting long enough to get the build running. I was getting angry with it, so I put the game on easy and decided to run Sunrise for the hell of it. I actually rather dislike easy difficulty; there is a HUGE drop in difficulty, to the point where I'm not sure I'm actually learning anything to use on LEGITIMATE, non-easymodo runs.

While the game gave me more large medkits than I could use in three games over (Seriously, I was never short on medikits until the last few levels, and only then because I was taking mancubi and Archvile fire), I was actually kind of dry on armor most of the time. That's the reason I built the nanofiber red; the total lack of armor in the midgame might have been an issue. Actually, all those damn medkits I was leaving behind because I didn't have room for more would probably have made it fine to run naked, dong flapping wildly while I punched things in the throat, but it's the principle of the thing. I don't like rolling around without armor.

I just BARELY lost my 100% kill rate when a lever in Hell filled a Baron-only level with lava, and I couldn't locate the last two before I lost my nerve. In retrospect, I could have spared an envirosuit to hunt them down; I wasn't aware of how little damage I was taking because I was too busy panicking and searching out the stairs. Hindsight! When I realized how well off I really was, it convinced me to do the Lava Cave, so at least there's that.

A chance invulnerability globe right next to the stairs let me kill the Cyberdemon barehanded with no damage taken, which is both sad and hilarious. The lava element let me do the same to the Mastermind. Too bad the game never spawned a nuke, punching JC to death would have been funny and I certainly had the health for it.

In all, I got a giant pile of medals, badges, and gained a rank, so I guess playing on easy wasn't entirely a waste. But I still don't think much of what I learned here is going to carry over; doubled powerups and low floor damage turned things that I expected to be troublesome into kind of a joke, and steamrolling bosses with invulnerability isn't really an educational experience.

Requests For Features / More description for the carnage

The description of the combat is very bland, when you think about it.

"You are hit! You die..."
"The missile hits the Spider Mastermind. The Spider Mastermind dies."
"You hit the former sergeant. The former sergeant dies."

Why not have a few more messages than "X dies" or "X is hit". Describe what's being done to them, and what the actual projectile is instead of just generic "hit" and "missile". Have a giant pile of lines for each various attack to spit out on demand, picked at random as appropriate. Different lines for shots that just damage versus shots that kill might be worth looking at too.

"The rocket hits the Imp. The Imp is blasted to chunks!"
"The bullet crowns the former sergeant. The former sergeant's head caves in."
"The bullet hits the demon in the eye. It looks very angry."
"The buckshot slams the former sergeant's torso. The former sergeant dies gurgling."
"The plasma burns the former human. The former human dies screaming."
"The chainsaw hits the demon. Gore covers you! The demon is torn in half."
"The Archvile is hit by the BFG. The Archvile is torn into vapor."
"Your knife wrenches through Mancubus' stomach. It doesn't seem to notice."
"Your knife tears through the imp's arm. The imp whimpers!"
"The rocket blasts the Arachnotron. It roars in pain."
"You punch the Cyberdemon in the torso. It regards you with contempt."
"You need to taste blood! Your fist slams the Cyberdemon's jaw, snapping it's head back. The Cyberdemon screams in surprise!"
"You need to taste blood! You tackle the cacodemon. You tear the Cacodemon in half with your bare hands!
"The former captain's fire misses! The former captain shoots you in the stomach! The former captain blasts you in the stomach! You are torn in half by the bullets..."
"The imp's fireball hits you in the face! You die screaming..."

It's entirely cosmetic, but would make it a bit more fun to read combat reports.

Discussion / Pimp my Rocket: Rocket Launcher Builds
« on: March 26, 2012, 23:08 »
I've read that Rockets are generalist mid-game weapons that go well with anything but lack the same overall power as, well, every other option. Best use of a secondary slot, not good choice for primary weapon. Also, the only trait that screams "rocket launcher!" is both bugged into not working and also is a shotgun trait, right down to requiring shottyman (Which is useless for rockets, though it's prereqs are not). So even the one RL trait is placed to keep it barefoot in the kitchen, making shotguns a sandwich.

Why use rockets? They are awesome, yes. The blow the fuck out of things. Of all the standard weapons that aren't BFGs, they do the most damage in one shot. They blow up walls. The blow up crowds. They can miss and still hit things, if the target is silly enough to stand next to a wall. They are actually available relatively early, in the Arena, and the Wall gets an exotic version along with a backpack and fuckton of rockets. Rocket Jumping can be the fastest mode of transportation in the game on a good roll, if you can afford a spare rocket and a pile of damage.

But rocket do have serious problems, and a lot of them are based on the fact that they are the compliment of shotguns. Shotguns are close-range crowd-eaters that are bad at taking armor. Rockets are long-range crowd-eaters that alright at taking armor. They both have reload time issues. Rockets can miss, unlike their cousins. Rockets at close range have a MUCH bigger penalty than a shotgun at long range. Plasma rifle beats rockets for overall damage, but it's on a different weapon track... but so does Double Shotguns, which is on the same track. And most damningly, while all the shotgun weaknesses get traits and whatnot specifically to correct them; MAD removes armor problems. Shottyman removes reloading problems. A double shotty can be assembed into a weapon with more damage potential and much less damage drop-off. Rocket have no equivalent traits, except Fireangel, which doesn't work, and the tactical rocket launcher is basically the missile launcher (which is guaranteed at the wall). Excepting Eagle Eye, any trait that improves rockets are also useful shotgun traits, while traits that improve shotguns are not necessarily going to improve your rocket any. As far as I can tell, shotguns are essentially better than rockets at what it is rockets are intended to do, except for removing walls. There really is no reason to focus on rockets when you could use shotguns.

But fuck that, let's make a rocket launcher build. Not a shotgun-build-with-a-dash-of-rockets-sometimes, but a build designed entirely around taking maximum advantage of sexy, sexy rockets.

...except I'm not a great player and have no idea what would work. I've got ideas, but not really big experience in fixing builds. Most of my character "builds" are "pick a master trait you want this time, beeline it" and there AREN'T any rocket masters. Anyway, ideas:

Scout Rocketeer:
Levels 1-4: Reloader 2, Intuition 2
Levels 4+: Finesse2> Whizkid1, Eagle Eye2

The idea is that you use a shotgun and intuition to survive the early levels, particularly the Arena, until you have the rocket launcher. At that point you're on tactical mode, using Intuition to hit things at long distance and Reloader to keep your rocket's tummy full. Cornershooting tactics rule the day. If the enemy is near a wall but too far from an opening to get at, blow through and use the new opening instead. You want to kill things before they're close enough to actually get a shot off, and use cover at all times and knockback to keep them at bay. Later levels revolve around getting Whiz1, so you can powermod that rocket as far as you can: Powermods are the only way to boost up rocket damage appreciably, as SoB is nigh-worthless for a single-hit rocket and they don't have SoG or Bru-type traits that pump it up by more than one per level. Eagle Eye makes it that much easier to hit things at distance or even in the black, which goes with the "kill them at a distance" plan very well.

Technical Rocketeer:
Levels 1-4: Reloader2, Whizkid2, Shottyman?
Levels 4+: Shottyman?, Hellrunner2>Dodgemaster

This is an early offense build. Reloader and shotguns get you though the first levels, then you use Whizkid to start whipping up classy gear. Shotguns remain important longer, since you need them for radar shooting, so Shotty is an attractive Level 3-5 option. After that is mostly defense; Whizkid is expected to carry your rocket to victory, while Hellrunner and Dodgemaster keep you healthy. When Fireangel is fixed, this build can be reshuffled to work with it.

Melee Rocket Surprise:
Levels 1-4: Brute2, Reloader2
Levels 4+: Finesse2, Whiz1, Berserk

This build relies on shotguns and melee until it hits the chainsaw and rocket launcher, at which point it goes melee with rockets, or rockets with melee, whichever is more useful at the moment. At a distance you throw rockets at their face, close up you chainsaw them. This uses a very split build, which is something of a problem; neither rockets or melee is maxed out, obviously, and this leaves defense wide open. I'm not sure how to fix it to work well, but I love the idea of melee and rockets coming together, and they do compliment each other nicely. Also, I have no clue which class to throw on this, which would make a difference; Melee master traits can be terrifying, if you want to use this as a melee/rocket baseline instead of a rocket/melee baseline. It could be pretty nasty on Ao100, with Malicious Knives and rockets, but that would probably require fiddling when you want to grab what.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

8 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 7 of those were killed.

 1 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
1 killed the bitch and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

For some bizarre reason, I decided that I should have to re-earn all my crap in the new version instead of porting over my stats, and I'm starting with my Marksman badges.

I decided to try out sharpshooter; this made the middle game much harder than I remember, but after I finally got it, I was ridiculously powerful. Maximized shots with that modded Combat Pistol was obscene. I could kill Arachnotrons in three shots, and because of all that SoG, I could shoot three times a second. Reloading was a bitch, but if the situation required more than 15 bullets than I should probably run away anyhow. That Combat Pistol had ridiculous power at the end

The Phobos Anomaly was a giant pile of dicks; lost souls and pistols don't mix at all. The Cyberdemon was bad too; apparently his visual range is farther than mine, I kept getting peppered by rockets from the dark.

Level 11 was a major snafu, with more lost souls. It was a maze and there was a Pain Elemental. It just kept spawning more and more lost souls. So many that they started spawning on the other sides of walls, from the lack of space. There had to be like twenty of the bastards; I tried running but seriously, who outruns a Lost Soul? I only managed to kill them all when I lured them through a narrow path and killed them one-by-one, far away from the elemental. I exited that level with 2% health and no medkits, it's a miracle I survived long enough to restock.

The Shambler seems a lot easier in this version. Instead of chasing his ass around while he shoots lasers and teleports across the level to heal, he always seemed to teleport nearby and actually fight. Makes the fight more fun.

The Mastermind was surprisingly easy. I ran in her face and shot it from point blank while she flailed at me ineffectually. Just one magazine and she fell over.

I had a chance for 100% kills, but I ducked into the Cathedral without thinking about it, when the normal exit turned out to be surrounded by lava. Not a happy moment when I realized what I'd done. I at least kept up the wholesale slaughter afterward, until level 20; I left the place when I realized it was eating my health.

Overall it was a pretty good run. Sharpshooter feels damn good when you get it, but it surviving long enough to get it is the trick.

I'm thinking re-earning my AoB badges next, using Malicious Blades. But losing Berserker, that's going to hurt like a bitch. I'm wondering if it's worth it.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Introducing Barney McGunfire and his very own personal battleship submachinegun, beating AoMK for the first time, 100% kills for the first time, and a big rank bump.

The game was actually very smooth sailing. Early on I had a high-power pistol (The 4 round variant) that I used with a normal pistol, because I didn't find the right mods to build a speedloader. I swapped it out for the baretta later and bulk-modded my secondary pistol, which I kept in the primary slot because the baretta can't dual-reload. The real kicker was tripping over the Onyx Armor early, which replaced all my armor needs for the rest of the game. I used the only other power mod I found on it, turning it into an unbreakable Red Armor (A little slow, but fuck it, unbreakable red!) I found the Gothic Armor (Which I agility-modded for giggles) and the Necroarmor later, but never had any use for them.

I avoided any special level I couldn't clear out, so I skipped damn near everything but the arena and the armory. The armory was where I picked up that lovely Grammaton Cleric Baretta, and after that I really didn't need any of the rewards the other levels would have given. Between it and the Powermod Onyx Armor, I was able to deal with everything I tripped over.

The worst part was an arena area that spawned me within view of something like 3 mancubi, 2 archviles, and a former commando and a few former slobs. That... was hairy. I mostly cowered behind the pillars in the center and tried to kill the viles without the mancubi getting line of sight, and a well-placed lava barrel managed to help me out. I was very lucky there was a soul sphere nearby, or I'd have been fucked.

Though in the end all the badges and medals, plus the pile of mancubi I shot my way through, bumped my rank up pretty hard. And finally pulling off a Ass-Kicking Marine and Marksmanship really made my day.

Requests For Features / Less exotic/unique assemblies
« on: November 03, 2011, 13:57 »
Over a quarter of the assemblies require nano packs. Just under half require exotic/unique packs to use. I was under the impression that assemblies were, in part, a way to reduce reliance on unique drops to get yourself some nifty gear. Instead it's looking like a way to use nano packs to make godkiller equipment, instead of the ability to create not-quite-exotic gear out of mundane material.

Basic seems fine; it only has a couple of things in there that require exotic/unique mods to make. But more than half of the advanced ones require exotic drops. There are no advanced pistol assemblies that don't require an exotic, and the only advanced armor you can build without a unique mod is environmental boots. Chainguns and shotguns do get the Assault Rifle and Focused Double, which look pretty sweet (I haven't gotten the Focused Double, but the Assault Rifle served me well in the past), but other equipment types rely on exotics to get any better. Master is almost entirely nano-based. Except the new Cerebus gear, which I haven't tried yet (The 0 protection weirds me out, high resistances or not).

Considering that nano is already really powerful even without assemblies, can we get more that don't require it? Or the other rare mods, for that matter?

--------------------------------------------------------------

Since I finally noticed that 9.9.4 was released, I decided to give it a whirl. Scout AoB seemed like an interesting combo, to take advantage of their stairsense.

I started with brute (because I'm not fucking retarded) and rolled from there up to Berserker, to get myself established. Since Scouts know where the exits are, it actually seems better to not rely on dodging, but instead on being able to go berserk and carve a bloody swathe when you can't find an alternate route through. After that I dropped some levels in Intuition, which were disgustingly helpful. Even with Int2 being nerfed to only work slightly out of visual range, being able to figure out what kind of nonsense is waiting in the next room or around the corner is great for figuring out what paths to take. Honestly, at that point I was set. Information and cowardice is much better at getting through a level than the ability to carve into a pile and scream about blood, and later map types love to give lots of different routes between here and there. Early maps are harder, since they involve big rooms and very few alternate routes. And zombies with shotguns, as usual.

I did get into a few bad situations, like my dumbfuck idea of invading the City of Skulls. Blademaster wasn't useful because of how late I got it and the fact that I was mostly avoiding giant mobs, but in the City it would have practically carved a path through. Instead, I sat there cutting down skulls for nearly no XP and slowly running out of health and restoratives, while a bunch of elementals sat far back and shat out more skulls. Maybe if I'd played a Marine and took vampire as early as possible, it'd be useful to take on the city; skulls for health, and there's so damn many that you could build up enough Berserkerness to last through the end of the game. Instead, I had intuition and had to use a homing phase to escape the giant pile of bones when I'd run out of Large Medikits and realized I was fucked if I didn't leave.

But most of the time Intuition kept me safe in situations where I'd have been fucked. Like an arachnotron crossfire in a warehouse that I was able to turn around into a counter-ambush, since I could "sense" them around corners. That skill is powerful now that it's available early.

Also, while I skipped the Halls of Carnage, the RNG still insisted on giving me a BFG9k shortly after the cathedral. I didn't know those could randomly spawn outside of Ao100. I thanked the RNG for this unprecedented gift by hurling it into a nearby pool of lava, as I am wont to do.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This is my first real attempt at Ao100, and I think I did pretty goddamn well. So well that I'd killed everything in my path, until an archvile and a mancubus shut me down with a combined volley.

I found a BFG 10K on level 29, and immediately turned it into a high-power assembly. I had Ammochain; this pretty much means nothing stood against me anymore. I had, by hook or crook, a perfect kill rate until I found it, and keeping that rolling after finding/modding that gun was trivial. My battle strategy was basically screaming "ALL THAT LIVES IS THE OPPRESSOR" while marching from one end of the level to the other, blowing the fuck out of everything at the edge of my visual range, be it monster, barrels, or walls.

In mazes and room catacombs I couldn't just let loose and level the entire floor with BFG fire, so I'd rely mostly on that overmodded Plasma Rifle to kill anything that got in visual range. And then I turned a corner and met those assholes, and my run ended. =<

Goddammit, from what was nearly the "instant win gun" to instant death. Fucking mancubi.

--------------------------------------------------------------

"Iosa the Invincible" is from Iji and I borrowed her name for good luck. Since I beat AoB for the first time this run, it appears to have worked. =D

Since I couldn't rely on being handed a lot of "kill everything" levels early on this time, I made up for it by hurling a lot of knives at barrels, which sort of solved my whiny "Fucking shotguns!" issue. Since the first few levels have more knives than you'll ever need, it's relatively simple to spend the first couple of floors throwing knives around corners to scout or luring imps into explosive traps. Not as effective as a shotgun or pistol, but still managed to make things a little easier. Using barrels to make alternate passages when a computer map shows where the exit is was also pretty important for skipping what sounded like a monster block party on level 4.

I was actually pretty worried after the Chained Court, because I didn't see a lot of health packs, and I'm used to them taking up nearly half my inventory. I had loads of armor to make up for it, kinda, and managed to avoid ridiculous things like trying to slug it out with Barons without 'zerk or being caught near a shotgun squad. Though I had a real bad moment two or three levels after the Court when I spawned inside a vault full of Cacos. Like nine of the bastards. I don't rightly recall how I survived that, but luckily I did.

I thought I cleared out the Armory, though apparently I missed someone. I was tempted to hurl the Trigun in the lava, but kept it for repeatable nuking purposes (Never actually used it; I was provided handy portable nukes for my destructive purposes). I did chuck that useless BFG into the lava river at the Halls of Carnage, though. I think tossing useless uniques/exotics into lava is an excellent way to spite the game and it's insulting offerings of firearms to berserkers. I actually forgot to do that for the Beretta as I was a tetch preoccupied by sudden Baron pubcrawlers, but I intended to.

I nuked level 13 because I found a thermonuclear bomb and because I damn well could. And while it says I nuked level 17, I actually nuked the City of Skulls with another portable bomb, mostly because it was funny. I probably could have used the level to put myself into berserk forever and let vampyre keep me alive, now that I think about it, but destroying the city with the power of the atom was too good to pass up.

I played more conservative toward the end to avoid my fate from the last game, though I managed to kill more mancubi and viles this time (Whee 'zerk speed!), and on level 16 I found the Onyx Armor just before hitting the Cathedral, which I powermodded and happily wore for the rest of the game.

I didn't quite kill everything on the last 10 floors, but I killed as much as I could manage, and actually didn't need to heal up too often. Berserker+Vampyre turned all those little mobs of early enemies into healing orbs with laughable guns, and the guys with plasma didn't spawn often enough to cut through the gobs of armor that made the chaingun and shotgun guys safe to take out. I avoided wading in to lava, but it didn't quite become as bad enough to stop me from exploring most of the final levels, and I got kinda paranoid about barrels toward the end since a shotgunner and a napalm barrel are what ruined my last attempt. But for the most part I killed whatever got in my way.

I homing phase'd on level 9, but explored a bit around the exit and killed a few barons, a vile, and a mancubus. Then I went into Cybie's little den and used another one for giggly experimental purposes, and managed to end up relatively close to the guy. He hit me with one rocket, then we traded blows until he died. I didn't go berserk, but I didn't need to heal either. The lance kinda wrecks him, doesn't it?

Anyway, my first winning AoB, I can move on to other medals and whatnot.

0.9.9.2 / [M|AoB|92%|18|YASD] Berserker Diary
« on: March 29, 2011, 05:02 »
I decided to do a AoB run and make solid notes about what I was doing, so that when I died I'd have a good record of what the run was like, what was working, and what I needed to do to stop getting pounded to death. I actually got farther than I'd ever gotten before on AoB; probably because I was thinking about what I should be doing while I was taking those notes. I still managed to screw it up, but it was a good experience.

Warning to those short on patience; this review is a tetch long.

Before him 48 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 43 of those were killed.
1 of those was killed by something unknown.
And 2 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 2 souls claim to have killed him...
2 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Level 1 involved giftdropping a small medpack and killing everyone that comes to take it. Probably standard operating procedure for these sorts of runs, I guess. I wasn't about to lose half my health and armor to the first asshole with a shotgun.

Level 2 had a "kill everything" lever, which was pretty cool. None of this dicking around with sergeants blindsiding me as I turn a corner, or imp crossfires, just a flip of a switch and I gain a new trait. Apparently this level also had a Vault, which had a phase pack in it. Emergency retreat get! There was also a Berserk next to the exit, so I got to start Level 3 in a rage.

Level 3 was an Arena. God dammit. I managed to kill a few imps and a Former while still screaming about blood, but a pair of sergeants chewed on me afterward, which was rotten. My gift armor ran out and I had to switch to a green set. The Hell's Arena exit was in here, but I passed it up; I love the Arena Staff, but I've got no goddamn clue how to deal with the Arena armed with only a set of knives.

Level 4-5 was mostly boring, and then the Chained Court involved EVERYTHING dying. I used berserk packs to run through lava and make pumpkin pie, as I figured I'd need the EXP. Left me a little bent health-wise, but I got a berserk pack near the beginning of level 6 so that took most of the sting off.

Level 7 was another goddamn arena. Hate. Only one shotgunner, though, so I manage to kill everyone here, and it had a large healthpack for my collection and some red armor, yay! Also, isn't the Berserk Trait only supposed to work if someone else is in view after the attack? Because I seem to pretty reliably hit berserk after the last kill of the level. It's somewhat annoying.

I'm officially farther than I've every gotten in AoB before at this point.

Level 8 has another "kill everyone" lever, which actually manages to not kill everyone, the only survivor is a single demon. Also a power mod and a bulk mod; power goes on a red armor, and bulk make my chainsaw saw harder.

Level 9 is a fucking caco cave. Since there's not a lot of good cover, the area has a lot of acid, and there's no useful items on the right side of the cave (according to the computer map), I pass up on killing them all. First time I left a level without killing everything this run.

Level 10 is a maze, and I zerk off a stunned imp at the start. Very good, because around the corner was a hell knight. From here I manage to trip into killing everything mostly by accident; timely zerks and a trio of imps that all got killed by a single other imp that was throwing fireballs at me (Or at least I think that's what happened, since they were all dead when I found a path around the acid. A chaingunner might have gotten them, though), and a lot of demons that managed to appear just in time to give me a zerk boost. Also, a super shotgun! I admired the workmanship, found a pool of lava, and tossed it in, mostly out of spite for the RNG.

Level 11 was another arena. A caco was nice enough to kill a lot of the formers between me and him, making my job a lot easier, but this level involved a lot of guys with shotguns and malicious intentions.

Level 12 started on the right foot by throwing me at a Captain. Fuck. I tried gift dropping some green armor in a door, but the cheapskate ignored it and opened a door for some cacos. I managed to kill them by dancing and hit the Captain in the next room without him filling me with fire. Past that was every fucking body, a giant pile of imps, demons, and another caco. I spent a good chunk of my health tearing through them, as unfortunately there wasn't another path and they had no intention of leaving the area (it was near the center). I didn't even zerk, dammit. There was an armor up and an invulnerability near the exit, though, so I can forgive.

Level 13 starts with a Baron in the same room. Thankfully invulerability trumps all and he gave me a zerk boost for my trouble, and I killed a few other beasties before it all wore out. A bit later I found a giant pile, including a Pain Elemental and an Arachnotron. I killed the spider before it could shoot me and then the Elemental, but it left behind something like 10 goddamn Souls. An imp tried to help me by shooting a nearby napalm barrel, which cleared a chunk out along with a bit of health; then I bolted through a door so I could take them one-by-one, and resolved not to try the City of Skulls this run. At this point I got Badass, which was cool because the level had a supercharge. I also thanked the imp in the traditional manner, by gutting him from crotch-to-throat with my chainsaw.

I hopped into the Halls of Carnage for the door prizes, as I figured at this point the sergants shouldn't be an issue. Besides, I was supercharged, so why the hell not? I chainsawed through the locked doors and killed everything on the far side in a red rage, and claimed my BFG. Then I waded out into the central lava river and threw it in before leaving.

Level 14 took the winds out of my sails by tossing me at a Reverant, a Captain, and a Baron all in turn. Apparently the game gets testy when I throw the prizes in lava moats. The rest of the level was nothing but demons though, which aren't really a problem at this point.

Hellgate was an issue. Usually I open up by killing most of the crowd with the Arena Master's staff and gunning down the rest with my biggest guns. This time I had no staff or guns. This time I grabbed a large health for the zerk and launched out... at which point the zerk wore off after I killed the first Lost Soul, making it SO very pointless. I used a large pack and basically hit whatever was biggest and adjacent until I zerk'd again and was able to finish most of the group off. Then I went back for the second large orb, since there was two cacos left AND I was sort of half-dead and armorless. After that I charged the Bruisers on run, zerk'd on the first hit, and killed them before it ran out. Also, hit Vampire, so I guess I was in good shape.

Hell dropped me in with an arachnotron, and I hit him up before the "deer in headlights" effect gave him back his legs. I spent most of the level looking for the Cathedral (I hear there's a spear involved or something, supposed to be nifty), and kinda freaking out at the mancubus noises I kept hearing. Turns out it wasn't an issue, the fucker runs for his life without firing a shot if you charge him while zerk'd. I heard a few more imps and souls running about, but since I'd already skipped some baddies and had found the Cathedral exit, I figured it was safer to move on.

In the Unholy Cathedral, I was worried about the giant pile of souls and demons I had to carve through, until I noticed I was gaining more life than I was losing, especially while zerking. Goddamn vampire is useful. Zerk wore off right as I got in striking range of the Angel, but it kicked in again after a couple of hits and I went from losing 30%-40% of my health per hit to losing like 2%, which was kinda nutty. I grabbed the Longinus Spear, my prize, and admired it for a bit. Then I waded out into the lava and... just kidding, I put that shit right into my equipped slot and headed for the exit.

Level 17 is an arachnotron cave! I carved up the welcoming spider before it moved and hoofed it to the exit. Better safe than sorry; I was mostly kit up equipment-wise, level 8, had the spear in hand, and wasn't going to fuck this up to squish some spiders.

Except that's exactly what I did next. In level 18, I met a pile of formers in various flavors, and managed to get killed by a sergeant with an exploding barrel while chasing a caco while berserked. I overestimated how durable I was with red and zerk, and didn't notice the barrel under all the red coloring. This is doubly ridiculous because I had plenty of medpacks; I could have spared one before I set off to stab things, but I didn't since my health didn't seem to be in the danger zone, particularly not from a Former with a shotgun.

Next time, I'll have to pay more goddamn attention, and not let all the blood red madness keep me from noting where the barrels are at.

Shit we learned:
~ Pay fucking attention. It's probably not a coincidence that the first time I bust out the notepad and start writing out everything I'm doing is the first time I get so far on AoB. And it's definately not a coincidence that I died when I stopped thinking and started chasing. "AHAHAHA MEAT" is not a substitute for taking stock of the situation.

~ Enemies seem to be stunned or something when you first enter the level. I'd noticed this before, but it really hit home during this playthrough. Even without running, sometimes I could cross a small room and go upside someone's head before they'd react, which was often enough time to bolt for an exit in bad situations or to kill single enemies, or at one point do both: kill something in my way while I haul ass for cover.

~ Berserker and chainsaws make melee piles tolerable, though not necessarily healthy. A horde of lost souls or demons can be dealt with if you go zerk soon enough, though it seems risky. It does mean the Hellgate is safer than I was expecting.

~ Vampyre... I'm not so sure about it's usefulness. Not knocking it, but it seemed Badass and Berserker were what really kept my engine running. I'll probably go with it next time anyhow, if only because the Cathedral seemed to be all about handing me loads of health via vampire, but I'm wondering if I would have been better served with another trait.

~ Charging at mancubi = easy kill? The blubberbutt was pretty slow and more interested in putting distance between us than peppering my face with rockets. I only found one, but it turned out pretty well. It might depend on whether you can meet him up close before he starts his volleys. It'd be nice to know how other people deal with them on AoB, aside from the generally non-helpful "run away" notice. I get that "run for it" is easier way, but sometimes there's not any other choice but to deal with them, so how's the best way to actually do it? Is a screaming charge actually a good option, or was I just getting lucky?

~ I actually managed to avoid taking good notes on 4 and 5. And level 2 was basically "flip the switch to win", which means I have all of crap to examine from my early game. Which is sort of a problem since early on is usually when my AoB runs end; shotguns in rooms I can't go around, cutting me to ribbons. Some idea on how better to deal with the early stages would be helpful. Particularly dudes with shotguns. Yes, I know, "avoid them", how goddamn unhelpful is that? It's not even usually an option to go around them until later level types, at which point you've got armor and health to deal with it. How do I manage them when they're still sitting in rooms that I can't get around? I don't have a load of experience and familiarity with their AI, so some tips on them would be helpful.

~ I found a lot of mods. I typically trip over a lot of mods between Level 8 and the Hellgate. I'm wondering if Whizkid would be worth looking at. Then again, Longinus kicks the crap out any chainsaw no matter how well-modded, and the armor assemblies above basic all require Nano, which I'm not likely to trip over. And even without Whizkid, nano can make Power Armor. It'd probably be more useful in making a melee secondary for a game that uses melee but isn't exclusively so, I'm guessing. Or you crazies that do Ao100 with just melee.

Any comments? Advice for the poor not-quite-berserker?

--------------------------------------------------------------

Since my first win was largely thanks to shotgun shenanigans with some rockets for flavor, I figured Angel of Shotgun was my best bet for my first Angel win. I never quite had the ammo problem I was expecting to have, but maybe that's just because I haven't done higher difficulties yet.

The Jackhammer was my prize at the Armory, at which point things stopped being able to fight me effectively. Hurling monsters across the area is fun! At one point I actually spawned in a small room with a Revenant, a Mancubus, and a pair of demons. I killed the lot of them before they managed to so much as twitch with my Jackhammer. I had a couple of other situations like that, such as large an angry things sitting outside the spawn building in a Hellcity, all solved through liberal application of Jackhammer to the offending mob.

I used a trio of homing devices to skip over the last three levels before Cybie's Hidey Hole, since while I was doing well, I didn't want to have to worry about yet another round of spawning in the middle of a monster hoedown and my luck running out. Considering two of those included an Arena and an Arachnotron Cave, I figure it was best not to risk it.

Jackhammers and homing phase widgets, yay!

Before him 29 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 27 of those were killed.
And 2 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I haven't played DoomRL in about a year, but I started again last week, and had mostly been getting myself killed in embarrassing ways before level 5. I haven't beaten it before, though I came embarrassingly close way back when I first played it (The mortem is probably still here, buried). This time I finished the Cyberdemon with ammo and health to spare.

Highlights:
I was fucked about twice. The Wall early on basically cleaned out all my rockets, all my spare health, and my armor. It was a tense couple of levels slinking around and running from spooky noises before I got in fighting shape again. Then around level 20 I was running on fumes, and I basically ran into the Mortuary to escape being surrounded by Barons, a Vile and a Mancubus.

The Mortuary basically saved my game; I went in with plenty of spare energy cells and two BFGs but only beaten-up Medical Powerarmor and something like 2-3 large health packs, and since I'd never done the Mortuary before I was expecting to be mobbed from all sides and killed (At least it would be a good way to die, crushed under a mountain of demons). But somehow I managed to kill the Viles with the BFGs and finished the rest of the revived monsters with my missile launcher. With all the random loot from the Mortuary, the assault shotgun, the nuke BFG, piles of ammo, a gift package of large healthpacks, and the goddamn Angelic Armor, I was basically set up for the rest of the game. When the Angelic Armor got beat up, I swapped to the Red with Nano that I picked up just before the last level. I wasn't paying a lot of attention to how far I'd gotten at that point, so I was kinda surprised when I tripped my way down into Cybie's Hidey Hole.

The nuke BFG was kept in reserve against Cybie in case I turned into a retard and managed to get myself dead, in which case I could nuke him for the finale. But since it's surprisingly easy to dance around his rockets, it didn't come down to that. Since the only other time I found him was last year and we spent the entire fight at point-blank range, I didn't realize how easy it is to sidestep most of his shots. Probably just RNG being kind.

I did find the Anti-Freak Jackal, but since I was playing with shotguns and rockets, I didn't have any ammo for it at that point, and I preferred my powermod combat shotgun (Which I left in the Mortuary after upgrading to the powermod Assault Shotgun). I left it at the Hellgate for hypothetical stalkers to use. I skipped over the Spider Pits, and some level that spawned in a hellcave full of lava; I never found it, and wasn't going to wade out into the fire to look for it after I'd killed the attendant Arachnotrons.

Since it was my first time ever in the Mortuary, I managed to get the Bronze/Silver/Gold Reaper Badges all in one shot. That was kinda nifty, along with all the game-making loot the place coughed up. The Mortuary basically won my game for me. Bless that corpse-ridden mess of a level!
