Requests For Features / Trait Requests!
« on: May 11, 2009, 00:12 »
I'm pretty sure we used to have a "New traits go here" topic but it died or got deleted or something. So I'll start up a new one and see if anyone's still got ideas.
I'm still up for discussion on my Artful Dodger trait, and I've also got a new one here to get things rolling.

Everliving
"Tis but a SCRATCH!"
Some say you can't die. Well, the people at the UAC do anyway. They've seen you get hit by cars and emerge with broken fingers, fall off cliffs and miss the ground. Anything that should bump you off the mortal coil just seems to stop a little bit short.
Any time you "die", the damage and accuracy of the projectile is rerolled. Should it either miss or not do enough damage to kill you with these new rolls, you live.
This ability has no cooldown and will always trigger whenever you hit 0 HP.

Requires ironman 2.

**I got barely any rekills, so this is pretty accurate.
***Just to dodge the cyberdemon's rockets a little better.
****The first 70% of his HP was removed with a BFG, then all 8 of my last plasma cells missed (Curse you running mode), then the last 30% was chipped off by an unmodded chaingun. Now THAT'S pro.

Requests For Features / [Addition] Artful Dodger Trait

Artful Dodger
"Move and I'll shoot! Wait... no. I messed that up. I meant 'Shoot and I'll move'."
There isn't a demon alive that can catch you, fireballs or no fireballs. Once you get this trait, enemies will never be able to hit you unless you're standing perfectly still for them.
Increases dodgechance by infinity% while moving. You don't need to be strafing.

Requires Hellrunner 2.

Hellrunner has no advanced trait and shotguns are still a little underpowered, so I suggested this. There's no way to output damage while running and there are still 3 enemies in the game that never miss (And their never miss takes precedence over my always dodge) so I think it should be fine for balance.

**Nightmare is all about killing shit at the start then surviving shit at the end.
*** "No kill is necessary, get the BFG then run, flee from every situation that can be fleed from..."
**** Aww come on, I was running and everything.

My latest and greatest N! AoLT run. If you'll look at the graveyard, you'll notice there's no stairs. I was standing on them.

So anyway, Nightmare AoLT. Tis almost impossible, and there's at least a small factor of luck no matter which way you slice it. The basic strategy is:
Kill as much as you can get away with without taking too much damage until chained court.
Kill a reasonable amount until halls of carnage.
RUN FOR LEVEL 25

Of course, you'll have very high tanky-ness, so you can tank for a little while for, say, a homing phase or an invincibility globe (Maybe Berserk. Maybe.), but anything else isn't worth it by then.
You can also stop for exp occaisionally, but unless you can guarantee a decent HP for XP ratio I wouldn't suggest it. Level 10 with above 50% kills is pretty sweet for a Nightmare DoomGuy.

Requests For Features / [Addition] Accuracy-enhanced weaponry
« on: April 16, 2009, 00:22 »
Just a quick addition, enhanced weapons are all based off of mod counterparts (Extended = Magazine Mod, for example), but the mods have been updated to include accuracy and the weapon enhancements haven't, so I suggest adding in the "Homing" or "Accurate" weapon enhancement.

Also I might as well put here that I think yellow weaponry has gotten a little too uncommon since uniques were added.

EDIT: Oh, I just remembered, damage-enhanced weapons used to be called "Advanced", so we're missing those too ever since Advanced weapons became their own style of weapon.

Modding / How DOES one mod DoomRL?
« on: January 22, 2009, 06:38 »
I've gotten all the various Lua stuff like an interpretor/editor (As that's what Kornel uses iirc), but there's no lua-related files in the DoomRL folder. What do I still need to interpret/edit DoomRL's code?

53
Something seems odd. In Nightmare!ish caves, you get:

Very Early: Lost souls
Early: Demons
Mid: Cacos
Late: Arachs
Very Late: Pain Elementals

Now, pain elementals are obviously a lot easier to kill than arachnotrons, so what gives? If you can beat an Arachnocave on level 16, then become stronger (As doomguy tends to do), you should be able to kill a bunch of pain elementals on level 22 a lot more easily than that, right?

Unless Kornel's programmed them to only spawn in Nightmarish Caves, which would be kind of smart, because there is NOTHING more ANNOYING than TEN RESPAWNING PAIN ELEMENTALS.

Ahem. So yeah, pain elementals, easier than Arachs but appear later. Fix that. Unless it's intentional on N! and doesn't happen on any other difficulty, in which case I hate Kornel.

*The second I got the BFG, all kills became completely optional. Heck, BEFORE I got the BFG I was running away whenever possible.
**Oh haha guys look where he spawned
***I only went in with around 80/70. He shot me twice before I ripped him up.
****Ironman for the heals (And survivability, I guess), TH because if ammo is a concern in Nightmare! then you're obviously doing it wrong.
*****I hardly had any armor throughout the entire game, actually. I only ever got 3 reds or so, and none of them stayed undamaged for very long.
*6 Ran out of cells (Had to kill around 7 revenants on level 24), swapped to chaingun, killed him with that. Cue lulz.
*7 Ran away from most of these, my only big Vile/Revenant fight was on level 24.
*8 Didn't see a lot of mancubi, actually. They're the rarest monster in the game.

Alright, basic Nightmare! strategy:
1. Never turn back, never backtrack, keep going forward. Never leave something till later, not even the stairs
2. The first 24 levels only exist to prepare you for level 25. Because you can probably kill the Cyberdemon using only 200 cells, that's the only thing you need and the only thing you should actively attempt to get.
3. No special levels are worth it except for the halls of carnage and the chained court.
4. Small HP packs heal for double, so treat them as Large HP packs because they're roughly as good now.
5. Never fight Viles unless you have to. Never fight Revenants either.
6. Phases are more important than HP packs or 10mm ammo.
7. Envirosuits are completely worthless, if you need to wade through lava then you just fucking tank it like a man. Boots are not worth risking even a 1% chance of taking damage, but if you can guarantee that you wont get hurt then be my guest.

Interesting stuff:
1. Halls of carnage is no harder on N! than it is on HNTR, unless you count the occaisional respawn.
2. You get most of the Hell's Arena prizes BEFORE Hell's Arena now. So much for a big early game boost.
3. My best runner combo was getting down 3 flights of stairs in around 10.0 seconds.

EDIT: Wait a second, 1087/640 isn't 59%! It tallies respawned enemy kills but it doesn't include them in the percentage!

55
1. Balance
I'm not sure, but I think I saw a Cacodemon in Hell's Arena auto-respawn on Nightmare!. Because the randomised respawn timer can return a value as low as 2.0 seconds this can render "You have to kill everything" levels like Hell's Arena and The Mort completely unwinable unless you're VERY persistant or reasonably lucky.

Or maybe I'm just paranoid and the cacodemon didn't actually respawn. I wasn't paying enough attention.

2. Balance

Oh here's a good one, Thomas thinks Nightmare might be a little bit too easy.

Well, it applys to Arch-Viles too, but the point is that when monsters respawn, they get all their goodies back. Even if you get no XP, it doesn't take a Blade to farm captains and get all the ammo you'll ever need for 10 dungeon levels.

As such, I suggest that respawned monsters should get no items, unless they need them (Mancubi and Revenants don't, for example). If they DO need the items, they should only get half of them back for each respawn (So half, then a quarter, then an eighth...)

3. Doomishness (A word I just made up!)
In Doom I (And Doom II iirc) it was actually possible to get more than 100% kills in Nightmare provided you were skilled enough to kill more monsters than had initially spawned. I believe this is not the case in DoomRL, and I would personally like to be able to get MORE than 100% kills in Nightmare to both keep a better track of exactly how many monsters you killed AND to add sillier messages for skilled players ("He just wasn't satisfied with killing them once." or "This ass-kicking marine killed them all TWICE!" for 200%+)

Of course, revived monsters will still not give XP, just increase your tally.

EDIT: It turns out that the game DOES tally revived monster kills, but it doesn't include them in the percentage (So you might get something like 648 kills out of 1087 = 59% which is obviously off by around 6%)

*Changed these lines to reflect the fact that I did a no-hits run of him USING THE PLASMA RIFLE.
**I'm reasonably pleased that I got over 90% on AoMs.
***Note the pillar both me and the Cyberdemon were standing next to. I basically kited him around this (I moved faster than him with Malek's armor) and fired whenever he couldn't see me.
****A poor trait choice now that I look back on it.
*****Both of these items were never ever taken out of my equipment slots from the second I found them. The nuclear plasma rifle lets me scout without wasting ammo (And acts as a decent DPS weapon in a pinch), while Malek's armor is just pretty damn good.
*6 Note the lack of BFG. I didn't have enough HP to cross the lava and back in the Halls of Carnage, and I never saw the Spider's Lair (Because I would've fucking done it if I did)
*7 Hate. So much hate.
*8 You know, I never realised how easy this was to do on AoMs until I accidentally did it once (In the video-YASD)
*9 I DID know what to do! Fire rockets blindly until I saw a baron, turn running on and dash for the stairs! I got 30% XP for level 6 this way and didn't get hit.
*10 Feel free to lol at this.

Well, I'm finally Colonel, so that's great. The only condition for General is "Win on at least NIGHTMARE!" so I'm happy that I've got an excuse to play regular games again, though I'm not sure what "At least" NIGHTMARE! is supposed to mean.

If you've read the H AoMs mortem that the other guy posted today then you know my strategy essentially word for word. It works beautifully up until you find Arch-Vile packs, which is when you use your homing phase devices.

I started (And ended) the Cyberdemon fight on 12% HP with no BFG, which is just great. Seriously, that's awesome. My plasma rifle kills him in 64 shots, so I even have to reload at least once (Assuming that all of them hit, which they obviously don't), so I'm going to have to find a way to stall him for around 15.0 seconds. Easy, right?

Well, it turned out that it was kind of easy. My movespeed was 0.75 thanks to Malek's Armor, and the poor old Cybie moves at 0.9. Maybe 1.0, it's hard to tell. The point is that that's kiteable. So we run around a pillar over and over (Remembering from my AoRA game that the Cyberdemon is incredibly stupid when it comes to moving around pillars) with me stopping every 4 moves to shoot his dumb ass.

The big epiphany, so to speak, that made me win AoMs was the fact that "Holy shit, I get a guaranteed rocket launcher at level 3 now". The rocket launcher is just excellent because it kills most things in 1-3 shots and it doesn't miss as long as there's a wall nearby. As such, you can go to the left side of a map, fire it blindly right and get 20% XP without being in danger of losing a single hit point. You might lose a few powerups, but most of them are based around healing or preventing damage (Armor and berserk) which you obviously don't need.

Also I killed 4 revenants. That's 4 too many. The first one was on level 13. That's 88 levels too early.

The 7 mancubi were mostly chumps though, they move too slowly to be a real threat one on one. The only problem is when they ambush you or bring along friends. Luckily they drop rockets so I don't feel too wasteful blasting them in to oblivion.

Everyone knows that a decent rooguelike developer will think of every single possible scenario, no matter how stupid, and program in an equally silly error message should you try to recreate some sort of immensly stupid thing. Heck, I can think of two DoomRL examples off the top of my head:

Pushing a barrel in to lava/acid: "Oh my, how stupid!"
Standing under a teleport square while invincible, then a monster attempts to teleport on to you: "ARGH! It feels like someone is trying to implode you!"

So what's the funniest message a rougelike has ever given you? A good example might be from dwarf fortress: "Astor cancels Engrave Stone: Is on fire." or nethack: "He died by getting petrified trying to help a cockatrice out of a pit"

Screenshot recomended if you think it was hilarious enough.

So yes, the actual run. I accidentally did Hell's Arena (Survived it somehow.), did Chained Court on 8% HP without leveling up until after I killed all 4 Cacos, found 2 Revenants in the same level (Subsequently fired a BFG shot out of spite and fear) and died when no less than 3 different explosive-based enemies attacked me one by one at different points of level 15.

Quite an exciting run, actually. Hence I posted this instead of the few AoMs runs I do that actually make it in to hell.

Watch, in amazement, as you see the life of a doomed marine, from start to finish as he spends more time showing off stupid things and trying to achieve a mancubus rank than actually working towards the goal of destroying the cyberdemon!

So basically, I recorded a HNTR game from start to finish, visiting most red stairs, killing everything, using all weapons at least once (Not including combat knife) and showing off some silly things that I do to enhance my gaming experience. I also point out some of the more OCDeeeelicious things that I do for no aparant reason and the countless stupid things that would've gotten me killed if I didn't take 3 trait levels of "Weasel: +5 to getting out of stupid situations"

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QCW0FF1L
http://www.mediafire.com/?my5ymj3ktjd

EDIT: Oh phew, I just remembered: You'll need DOSrecorder (And, more specifically, the player that comes with it) to view my character's life. I'm sure you can just google it or find a link on the forum somewhere.

As you watch, you can read these extended comments to see exactly what I was thinking half the time, and maybe get some ideas yourself. But no matter how bored you get, WATCH THE WALL AND THE MORT. I'm reasonably proud with both of those runs, as you can see by my little dance at the end of both of them.

Pregame:
Just showing off some stats.

Level 1:
I choose TaN. EE isn't necessary until you get chainguns.
I always run diagonally. Get used to it.
A decent level 1 run. I don't like it how I got hit by the shotgun though.

Level 2:
I play this level pretty poorly.
Ugh, that imp hit me TWICE in that corridor.
Like Blade, I use green for various shooting messages. I also use blue for "You just killed something" and yellow for "Watch out, a lever in this level does something you don't want"
TaN again. Not like EE or SoaB's gonna help.
And I finish on 12% HP. Not very flattering.

Level 3:
Ooooooooooooh shit.
Okay, with shotguns, running is basically "Combat mode". As you can see, I tear up everything without taking too much damage.
I'm proud with the way I handled that, actually.
Yay, a monster spawner!
As you can see, I charge right in to an imp because of my impatient movement style. You'll see a fair bit of that :/
I decide that hell's arena would be a wise venture, what with my squillion shells and HP packs.

Hell's Arena:
Some snappy shotgun tactics in the first round. I run when I fight the caco for obvious reasons.
I know I'll get a chaingun before I hit level 4, so I get EE.
Hey, no damage until round two! Thomas likey.
I try to fire in between enemies when I have a shotgun. And sometimes it screws me over.
I use HP packs fairly regularly, as they're the only way to start running again.
Priority in round 3 is to find the fucking chaingun.
From where I'm shooting, I don't think they can shoot back. It's just one of those things you learn after playing for years.
I decide that I was going to give shotguns a break until I found a Dshotty.

Level 4:
A pretty average level. I horde up on armor in here because there's really nothing better to get for a while.
Green armor > Damaged Blue armor. It just makes sense. I keep it anyway so I can repair it later (If I remember to)
Showing off my blue "You killed something" message. It does come in handy sometimes, people!
DAMMIT I KNOW YOU'RE IN HERE SOMEWHERE FORMER HUMAN.

Level 5:
A cave! Caves are notoriously easy in my book. Even the arachnocaves.
Oh sweet, level up. I choose SoaB, obviously.
I don't need a reload mod. (Well, I do, but I don't figure it out until later)

Chained Court:
very very easy level. You'll notice I take off my armor. This is because berserk gives you +6 armor, so I don't want to get my regular armor damaged while I can rely on that bonus.
I shoot out the doors to spend one less turn in the lava.
"I'm full already? Oh, too many medpacks and armor."
"AMMO CRISIS AVERTED!"
Chainsaw is the best weapon to use on these guys.
HOLY SHIT I RAN OUT OF BERSERK HOT HOT HOT
I decide not to take my chances this time and get 2 packs instead of 1.
150 cells spare is more than enough for the rest of the game, unless I want to go to the mort.
Moar pro blind killz? Yes plz!
"Oh wait, I have a rocket launcher! Now I remember!"

Level 6:
Oh hey, a double shotgun!
I drop some medpacks (I was seriously carrying too many) for a double shotgun and 50 shells.
Other than that, boring easy level.
Until I remember that shotguns like speed mods.

Level 7:
Heh. What a great place for a pack to spawn.
I quickly fiddle around with my weapons until I manage to get a reload mod on to my rocket launcher.
What the hell? Did I hit a barrel!?
Oh haha, I did. Mop up the survivors and I think it's a wrap.
Whenever I remember that I'm lugging around a shotgun, I open doorways while carrying it. You never know when you'll get the drop on some poor lost soul.
DOOMRL 101: DON'T FUCKING PULL A LEVER NEXT TO THREE BARRELS.

Level 8:
Another SoaB, obviously.
Now THAT'S how you use a shotgun.
I try to kill them without the barrel, then get sick of it and just blow it up.
With shotguns, it will kill anything that is next to the line. As such, I keep trying to put the line right through the middle of them.
Magazine mods are okay. You can stick them on plamsa weapons and such.
I'm sure by blowing up that wall instead of walking around it I saved a little time.

Level 9:
OOOH YELLOW WEAPON oh wait it's just a combat shotgun.
I spend 2 seconds trying to think up a good strategy for the hell knight.
My brain's failsafe then breaks and defaults to "Use running you moron"
Other than the hell knights, it's a pretty boring level. Good music though.

Level 10:
Another cave. This one has cacos in it, which are the worst types of enemies to find in a cave.
Yeeaaaah, cacos are the exceptions to my "Caves are easy" rule.
I don't focus on dodging them that much when I see the invincibility globe.
Yay hard level made easy.
Dance #1: YES A FUCKING DAMAGE MOD I LOVE YOU DOOMRL

Level 11:
Haha, more shotgun fodder.
Oh wait, a yellow weapon!
...
...
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCC-
*Sigh*
Whatever. I'm sure I'll find more mods.
Boring inventory management sequence GO!
Hm. I think I WONT fight next to a wall and a barrel.
Shotgun makes this fight reasonably easy.
I decide to get close.
Then I realise that reloading costs me 22% HP.
Large HP pack #1: I desperately needed a running command, this is the only way to get one.
Hey! Another levelup! More SoaB, of course.
Checking my inventory. Seems like everything's in order.
Oh wait, I already checked up there.

The Wall:
Everyone should watch this, even if you're bored to death already.
Some epic shotgun ownage. I have to fight like a chicken and stay near the wall though.
Large HP pack #2: Yeah, like I was going to do this without healing.
HAHA BITCHES, AND THAT WAS WITH NO SHOTGUN TRAITS
Dance #2: I just like clearing the wall. It makes me feel like a big man.
Note that I skip the advanced rocket launcher. It would eat too many mods and I don't need it.

Level 12:
Holy lots of demons at once batman.
Luckily I brought a shotgun down with me. But I can't help but notice that it's running out of ammo...
Oh hay dere red armor
I go for TaN 3, just to finish the set. I think it saves my life once or twice too.
Inventory management ftw m i rite guys
Easy level, but it was reasonably interesting, what with all of the demons and imps.

Level 13:
Oh no, another caco cave.
Luckily I'm pretty tanked up at this point so they aren't too hard.
"Wait, I only have 8 shells? Crap!"
I still make the most of those 8 shells.
While running, you take half lava damage. I use this to my advantage when I'm forced to hide behind a pillar and reload waist-deep in lava.
A surprising amount of cacos for one midgame cave.
Speed mod? Sure whatever. I'll just get some damage later.

Halls of carnage:
Whoops, I don't think I should've gotten that supercharge until I was heading out.
"Oh riiiight, I don't have any shells"
"Wait what? I'm full? God damn it."
And then we had an inventory management sequence.
The shotgun is WORSE for this level than the chaingun, but it gets ammo aplenty so I don't feel wasteful.
I have to skip one supercharge globe, I want to leave on 180% HP.
This level is designed for the "Shoot around corners like a chicken" strategy.
I HATE IT HOW IT SWAPS YOU TO THE BFG AUTOMATICALLY. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY LOTS OF 40 CELLS I'VE WASTED BECAUSE OF YOU KORNEL!?
And a quick wrapup. I was surprised that I missed that sergeant, I thought there was still a demon roaming around.

Level 14:
I decide that the double shotgun has had a good run. I'd shown off some pretty leet tricks with it but it just wasn't good enough any more.
When I see that baron and the imps, I realise that dropping my Dshotty so soon was stupid. Luckily I have rockets to burn at this point.
Haha, my superior knowledge of DooM comes in handy. From my speakers, I was absolutely sure that there was a pain elemental in that room, and that shooting it with a rocket launcher would be wise.
"Wait, was there red stairs on this floor?"
"Dammit, message history doesn't go far enough. I'll just assume no."

Level 15:
I don't like barons. Especially when I have no plasma rifle.
Wow, my rocket launcher is seeing a lot of action, isn't it?
Killing barons with a hardly modded chaingun take too long for me- HOLY CRAP A MANCUBUS
DEAR GOD KILL IT KILL IT
OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Oh phew, lucky dodge.
I decide on hellrunner, just for aforementioned lucky dodges. Also wearing red armor REALLY slows you down.

Level 16:
Another situation that would've been easier with a shotgun.
...or an invincibility globe?
I pistol whip the baron to death for the sake of it.
"Oh hey, I'm invincible, what if I got a pistol kill here?"
"Drop my BFG, pick up the pistol..."
"HOLY SHIT HE MIGHT DESTROY THE BFG"
"AAAHH INVENTORY MANAGE INVENTORY MANAGE"
"Oh great, now I'm vulnerable again."
"Screw it, pistol killikng anyway. I want a mancubus rank."
I'm very surprised those cacos and that mancubus didn't rip me a new one.
Ugh, hate mancubi. Not as much as revenants, but they're still pretty annoying.
Freaking hell, this one just doesn't die.
I'm sure we all enjoyed that level, it wasn't easy or boring!

Level 17:
I decide that damage mods are too rare annd I might as well just get S3 on my chaingun.
Wasn't scared of that mancubus. More pissed off now.
Gogo blind rocket launcher shots.
Dammit, the imps were in the corner I didn't shoot at.

Level 18:
A revenant. I fucking despise revenants. They just don't miss. You can't dodge them. And I'll hate them forever for it.
I go rocket launcher crazy again. I've pretty much won the game at this point, what do I care about destroying items?
Gosh darn it a damage mod. I suppose I could put it on a plasma rifle (Whenever I find one?)
Another hellrunner, whatever.

Level 19:
Something valuable, you say?
Ooh, missile launcher. That'll help me next time I go rocket launcher crazy.
Like right now! Oh shit, I missed.
Oh shit, I missed again.
Man, I suck with this thing. I wish it was a jackhammer instead.
Mm.... jackhammer...
After horrible luck with some levers it was nice to find a healever.

Level 20:
Arachnocave. They really aren't that hard with a weapon as awesome as a damage modded plasma rifle.
Yeah, that's right, engage me in a melee fight like a big idiot.
I decide that I'd go out of my way to actually try and pistol whip them to death. Hilarity ensues.

Level 21:
Mancubuseses! Mancubine! Mancubes! Man-ha-han-cubi!
I kid. They were really easy.
I have like 450 plasma cells spare, I can go ahead and waste them if I want.
The vaults? Nah, I wanted a YAAM.

Level 22:
Valuable?
Oooooooooooooooh, the dragonslayer! I wonder if I could get a melee win with this thing.
Too heavy? Huh? Awww. Well, at least I saw it. I think that's the last unique that I needed to see before I've seen them all.
Yeah, I go ahead and tank that barrel explosion. That's how manly this doomguy is.
Armor durability mod = Portable armor shard
I use small HP packs constantly in this level. A lot spawned on this level though, so I didn't waste anything.
Gooooooood damn it that's one annoying Baron.
I hear an explosion? OH MY GOD HE TELEPORTED AGAIN
DIE BITCH DIE
Okay, I have 400 cells and you guys deserve a show. Keeping this in mind, I decide to storm the mortuary.

The Mortuary:
One quick note, I've changed my music.dat so that it plays "Necrophantasia" by ZUN (The guy that makes touhou games). It just seems worthy of the mort.
Why? Because it's in the top 5 most beautiful, epic songs that anyone has ever made.
Note that all of those top 5 songs are from touhou games. Something like Necrophantasia, Nuclear Fusion, Flight of the Bamboo Cutter...
Huh? Oh right. The mortuary. I knew I forgot about SOMETHING while I was talking about that.
So the whole place is a giant BFG fest. I don't really like this run of the mort compared to last time I did it.
Last time I did it I only used the jackhammer! That was sweet.
Oh, level up. I'll go with ironman.
Needs moar BFG...
You'll notice that, like in Doom and Doom II, the BFG basically kills everything you're looking at, not everything in the circle.
Large medpack #3: I don't need to explain this one.
...and I run out of cells. Lovely.
Luckily there's only one vile left, and the various weaklings he spawned.
I swap to the chaingun, deciding against wasting more cells.
My god, these corner prizes are rediculous.
Dance #3: This is only the second time I've managed to defeat the mort. I still don't feel as good about it as the first time though, what with the jackhammer and all. Good times.

Level 23:
I was around as high as you can get on life, so I ran right in to a vile/revenant pack. In any other game, I would've died! :D
Wow, that angelic armor sure had a good run. Not.
Quick level. Vile packs take up almost all of the level's "Monster points".
And I decide against a lava bath. Not enough boots or envirosuits.

Level 24:
Yeah, I've won the game. There was no doubt of that since level 15.
Arachnocave? Booooring.
Yeah, screw searching the level, I'm just going to pick up some health and take out the cyberdemon.

Level 25:
I was going for a no hits run. But he got a lucky shot on me while I was reloading (I didn't know I reloaded that slowly) so I decided "Fuck it, I'll just finish him off quickly"
And there he goes. Good game.

Postgame:
Hooray YAAM
Hooray graveyard-related spoilers
Hooray almost level 11
Hooray I had so many items spare
Hooray lots of kills
Hooray my 11th win
Hooray showing off my high scores
Fucking hell AoLT was a pain. I tried to do a melee run of it (You know, that makes sense?) but I had to keep ditching them halfway through when I realised that I couldn't beat the AoD.
And that resulted in me not having enough cells for the cyberdemon...
And that resulted in me dying while trying to chaingun him...
And one of those resulting deaths accidentally got saved twice so it looks like I'm even worse than I am...
And then I thought "Fuck it I'll do a packless run like in AoI"
And that worked like a charm
And hooray alliteration.

Time is short, so I'm back to good old asterixes for this mortem.

DoomRL (v.0.9.8.10) roguelike post-mortem character dump
--------------------------------------------------------------

Thomas, level 9 Cacodemon Major, defeated the Cyberdemon
on level 25 of the Phobos base.
He survived 74480 turns and scored 64065 points.
He didn't like it too rough. *

He killed 496 out of 496 hellspawn. (100%)
This ass-kicking marine killed all of them!

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 233 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 206 of those were killed.
4 of those were killed by something unknown.
2 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 11 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 10 souls claim to have killed him...
2 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
7 killed the bastard and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

* Just testing out shotties. It turns out HNTR is still pretty damn easy without using anything other than shotties.
** I sure do love 0.44 movespeed without armor and with running on
*** I found that red armor was making me move too slow. I had 3 TaN anyway, so this was a decent tradeoff.
**** AH HAH HAH HAH HAH HAAAAAAAAAAAAH
***** Just in case things got ugly.
*6 If I found a few more mods, this thing would've been my new main weapon. The Jackhammer only slightly outclassed it.
*7 Is it me, or does a pretty pimped out doubleshotty make this challenge trivial? I used 4 rockets to blast through the wall (The only ones I had) and then just pwned them with my super duper doubleshotty.
*8 I never ever dodged a reverant rocket. Never ever. I had to tank them, and it hurt.

I didn't do hell's arena due to lol no chaingun allowed
I didn't do the mort because doing that would require A. Massive luck and B. Me to use my BFG rather than my Jackhammer
Damn it I didn't find any stairs to the armory. That's just mean, Kornel.
Skipped lava pits. Put a better reward in it or I wont bring down Envirosuit packs for you.
Never saw Vaults and it would ruin my YAAM.

Weapon timeline:
Fists (That's right, I dropped the pistol. My character cares not for non-shotgun weapons): Level 1
Shotgun: Level 1
Combat Shotgun: Level 3
Doubleshotty: Level 5 (Yaaaaaaaaay)
ADVANCED doubleshotty: Level 7 (LOLWUT)
ADV. Doubleshotty with 2 speed mods: Level 8 (AAAAAAH HAH HAH HAAAAAAH)
Jackhammer: Level 19

In short, a stupidly lucky but reasonably skilled shotgun user manages to find better shotty after better shotty until the amount of dakka exceeds that of every ork army in the world and he blows up the Phobos base in a thermonuclear AWESOME
