All this talk of MSs made me want to play a MSs run. But I haven't played in a while. I used to feel fairly comfortable playing on HMP, but now I can't. So I took it down a notch. And added 75 more floors. And chose a challenge that I've never been able to beat. Because why not?

I was actually doing really well. Sidetracked from MSs for a level because I really wanted to put a P mod into my starting pistol. Figured that at some point I'd get a second level of WK and start putting B and P mods onto it, since it's never a good idea to assume that the RNG will give you a really good weapon, but then again I was playing on 100. Still, some early additional firepower never hurt anyone. Not like I had anything else to put that P mod on anyway.

Everything was just fine and dandy until...

The missile hits the baron of hell. The baron of hell hits you.
You use a large med-pack. You feel fully healed.
 You start running!

I healed for full, I took off running in the other direction, I'm wearing 6 AC armor, and despite all that the baron STILL one-shots me.
And yes, I know I only have 10 Max HP.

I mad. >:(

I'm used to SoG 3->EE 3-> MSs, and it works out quite well (and when it doesn't, a Hell Knight/Baron blows me up)

Good try though, looks like you also experimented with a variety of different weapons.
Another pistol build that's received generally positive feedback is Cateye Dualgunner for Scouts, though I've never had any success with that build in particular.

Yeah, I've never even got to the point with a pistol where it like, knocks back stuffs. What are the general, like, mechanics behind pistol knockback?

An ordinary pistol can start knocking enemies back when you get SoG 3 or 4, I forget which. But knockback with ordinary pistols is definitely possible with SoG 5.

Yeah, once I hit Sharpshooter and Intuition 2 I was kind of at a loss what to add. I was considering Hellrunner, but felt I was doing fine with survivability. It wouldn't have hurt, of course...but thanks for the tip! Whizkid was mostly experimenting this time, to see what I could make, how it worked and such. I've never really gone for WK before.

I think WK is great to pick up only as a Technician since you can literally add it whenever you want/need to. I can usually find sufficient reasons to have one level of WK on a standard run, but unless I'm already carrying the mods I need for master assembles, I typically don't bother with WK2.

You'd be surprised at what more speed does to your survivability. I won't claim that more speed means you live longer, because it doesn't.
More speed can get you out of trouble quick.
More speed can also get you into trouble real fast.
But Dodgemaster is a great trait to have, regardless of how careless you play, so as long as you know how dodging and sidestepping works.

Nice job. Just a few opinionated opinions from my end...

1. You had two points into Whizkid but the most advanced assembly I see in your equipment is the environmental plasteel boots. Good on ya for making them, but it might be a better idea to save that one point for Hellrunner, or if you had sufficient EXP levels, a 4th level of Son of a Gun. SoG 5 is hilarious.

2. If you're aiming for Brick Silver, the easiest way to get that without having to rely on RNG being nice (implying) is on Angel of Shotgunnery, by making a plasmatic shrapnel shotgun of some description. It still requires you to get a Sniper mod before Wall, but now that Wall/Containment Area appears after Deimos Lab/Hell's Armory, your chances of getting that exotic weapon mod is a bit higher than having to rely on the RNG giving you enough phase devices and not throwing you right in front of the wall that you're trying to leap over.

3. I think you meant M for your title, not N. N is Nightmare! difficulty. :)

Of course, I'm sure it's lots of fun!

Losing IS fun. I'm glad there are people here who understand that, unlike the simpleminded simpletons in my day-to-day life whom I've tried to persuade into playing DoomRL. They lose one or two games on ITYTD and ragequit forever.

Then again people have tried to get me to play Dwarf Fortress and I'm always like "uhhh no, too much stuff to learn"

Nice job.

I should try to get Everyman Gold again, but this attempt really put a damper on that motivation.

AoMC + AoD sounds like a terrible idea fun.

Discussion / Re: How to make the most out of MVm?
« on: September 08, 2013, 14:25 »
The reason why Pain Elementals are considered to be "christmas came early" for MVm runners is that each kill brought back 3% or whatever to your total health, regardless of what you killed. Well, USED to...as of 0.9.9.7 that's no longer the case. Now you get a fraction of health based on the max health of whatever it was that you killed. Lost Souls not being very meaty monsters, well, they have very minor healing returns now that MVm's changed.

Also: "Why are they trying to melee me?! That's not supposed to happen!"

You can force any enemy and every enemy in DoomRL to melee you if you get yourself in their melee range. Pain/Agony Elementals have a tendency to shy away from you while spewing their Lost Souls/Pain Elemental offspring to deter you but you can force them to use exclusively their melee attack if you shove your face against theirs. Needless to speak for the melee-only enemies like Demons and Lost Souls, like.

If you're playing a Melee build then you should expect enemies to melee you back. :)

I don't know what else to say for "Pain Elemental farming" since I've never personally done it...maybe tried it a few times in 0.9.9.6 when the MVm life leech mechanic hadn't been changed.

Post Mortem / Re: [M|97%|YASD] Limbowned
« on: September 08, 2013, 01:41 »
I don't know how much fire skulls would have helped you at Limbo. It definitely would have melted a majority of the corpses, but I think you'd still have some opposition to deal with, like viles. And whatever the viles revive.
My experience with Limbo is that, the easiest way is to simply knock things into lava. Shotgun, rocket launcher, pistols with SoG 3+, whatever. But you still need some way to deal with fliers and viles, because they're not affected by damage tiles.

I do that too, though--if Agony Elemental drops fire skulls I don't pick those up. Well, I pick it up to have it count to my list of collected special items, and then I drop it immediately after and move on.

I'd face Cyberdemons in every level if I could start games with a Nuclear Plasma Rifle. I love that thing. ._.

That sounds like you have a reckless disregard for the well-being of your Doomguys.
You should try Ao100.

I have one! However it'd be overpowered on Marine because of Ammochain.

Angel of Fission/Fusion: Can only wield nuclear powered weapons.

The only thing I'd change about that is make it so that EVERYONE deals BFG and/or plasma damage in addition to the damage they do normally.
See how you like demons rushing at you with BFG-infused fangs.

* White Rider imagines Mancubi firing their 3-rocket array in addition to the rockets making a small BFG splash radius upon explosion

Discussion / Re: AoB and Standard Games

Barring Malicious Blades builds on AoB, I prefer taking 3 levels of Brute before I take Berserker, particularly if I feel suicidal enough to attempt Arena. So instead of:

Bru -> Bru -> Ber -> Bru

I enter Arena with:

Bru -> Bru -> Bru -> YASD (damn Arena)

Early Ber might be a good idea on UV though since so many enemies show up at one time and so early on.

So I shouldn't be having Dwarf Fortress style fun by trying Angel of Berserk on UV without even finishing the game once on ITYTD?

Awww. :<

You can. But not yet. You need to learn how to play the game proper first.

When/if do you grab whizkid for the mods?  I usually play as a Marine, so unless I start playing more as a Tech, I don't see how I could fit it in my build.

Whizkid requires two levels of Finesse, which works with every Marine mastery except for Army of the Dead. I might have gone for Whizkid in a few AoB runs where I built Vampyre. All those points into Brute reinforce my melee accuracy to a point where making a double chainsaw might be a viable option until I get to Unholy Cathedral.

I find little reason to go out of my way to get Whizkid unless I'm playing a Technician or I'm playing on Ao100/AAo666, though. Standard games don't give me near-limitless opportunities to mod my gear to my liking. (Also because having A-modded cybernano phaseshift armor and A-modded antigrav phaseshift boots is hilarious, but pretty much only possible on AAo666.)
