Title: Long Goodbye - CthulhuTech PBF- IC
Post by: Gargulec on July 18, 2010, 15:32
Morning Patrol

'...High Command still refuses to comment on this glaring example of racism in the organization we considered to be free of this petty flaw.'

News broadcast was only slightly more interesting than the landscape that surrounded you, as your mecha strolled along the cracked asphalt road. Rolling hills dotted with occasional grooves and ruins in various states of decay maybe was picturesque but certainly got really old really fast- especially after three fruitless hours on patrol.

'Will Droya case become the Dreyfus affair of Aeon War? Only time will tell. That was Joan Fergusson of Global News Network'

The programme ended, and soft sounds of nazzadi music filled the cockpits of your mecha. Radio accompanied soldiers- and plitos- everywhere they went, thanks to the ubiquitous satellite uplinks, standard in all machines of war. Many veterans joked that this voice from afar, from the land of civilians did better job keeping them sane than all army psychologists combined. As you observed morning slowly turning into noon, and literally nothing happening, you started to agree with them.

When reckon drone brought the data that indicated migou activity in the region of your base, your first thought was the the war finally found you. Well, no one can remain on the second line forever these days, and you spent almost a year now being sitting ducks in Karski Base, proudly named outpost that has not seen any real action since the end of the First Arcanotech War.

At any rate, after a week of tense waiting, no attack came. No patrol sighted even a single bug soldier or mecha. Whatever they were looking for- if they were at all something more than major reckon screw up, apparently it was not you.

Sun was already pretty hight on the sky, and you were closing to the end of the planned patrol route.

Finally.

"Almost home now, Kinder. Eyes open now, don't want anything jumping us on our doorstep, ja? Report in by callsigns," lieutenant Thomas Kroenen ordered. The recent transfer was pilotting an imposing Malach-class Engel, the new unit markings still fresh on its armour.

Inside the semi-organic cockpit of the Engel, the lieutenant switched the radio off as soon as the first chords of the latest Nazzadi pop tune came on, turning instead to scanning the surroundings through the eyes of his Malach.

"Why did you have to go turn that off? It didn't sound so bad," came the voice in his head. Faust, his Malach-class Engel, and Thomas had somewhat different tastes in music.
"Didn't fight a war against those Kohlen to just sit and listen to that wailing now," Kroenen replied through the same mind-link which his machine used to speak to him. "Maybe this time once we're back at base I can give you some *proper* music to listen to..."

"Jeez. You'd think that if they were going to show up on the drones there'd be some action around here..." Adolf Hertz muttered, switching his cockpit radio over to a popular neorock station.

Hertz had drawn left flank this patrol run, so his external cameras were all oriented appropriately. He, too, was a recent transfer, though he'd been piloting mecha for several years now.

"Wolf reporting. Nothing sighted so far."

"This is Ravager. That is a negative on enemy sightings." replied Second Lieutenant Mecha Pilot Asura. Despite the lack of activity, he rather enjoyed his patrols. It was more exciting that just sitting around in the barracks or back at his flat. And should anything happen, all more entertaining.

Bringing up the rear was both the safest and the most dangerous place to guard, depending on your enemy. However, for Asura, it was the best place to strike from should combat erupt.

"Lightning reporting in. Nothing spotted." - replied Raziny. She was almost sure that nothing bad can happen. That wasn't her first patrol going like this and she was used to disbelieve in the need of  mission. But orders are orders and she can't disobey them. At least she is told so.

"Wait a minute... I'm picking up something very faint up north, about five miles. Could be nothing, could be something. Going to head that way a bit to see if I can get a clearer view," Adolf said. As he did, he directed his mech northward for up to a mile, perhaps to a mile and a half if he could.

"Acknowledged, Wolf. Will be backing you up," Kroenen replied. "Ravager, Lightning - flank right and keep a low profile. If there's anything out here, we should try to keep it in the dark about our force composition. Hold fire until target confirmation."

"Now, let's go get a quick look..."

"Patrol, be advised, going to pop up for an aerial view. If there's any fire incoming, try to track it," Kroenen added as he engaged Faust's A-pods to bring its head up above the treeline in the hopes of spotting whatever the contact might have been. However, he did not see anything that might indicate enemy activity. Still, better safe than sorry.

"Couldn't spot anything... though that doesn't mean nothing is out there. Wolf, on me, we'll investigate directly. Rest of you keep us covered and keep a low profile," he ordered, before switching to transmit back to base. "Karski outpost, Faust patrol here. We have some form of radar disturbance and are moving to investigate."

'Roger that, Ahriman’

You abandoned the road, and traversed the hills that separated you from the source of the interferences. The land still bore scars from the previous war- you dimly remembered that it was Eastern Europe to be the first target of invading Nazzadi forces, and it got hit hard, not to say- obliterated. Numerous craters, now overgrown with vegetation made for a decent reminder of those events, along with a lone burn-out and rusted wreck of some of vehicle.

After a few more minutes of travel, you reached the place of origin of the interferences- a lakeside. Oddly, whatever was causing them seemed to be placed in under the greenish waters.

There were no signs of civilization here, and on the opposite side of the lake- some 250, 300 meters from you you could see the wall of trees that formed the border of the local forest, if that simple word could even start to describe the vastness of it. Even in the light of the day, they appeared somewhat menacing, no doubt in large part thanks to the rather horrible rumours you have heard in the base about the things that are said to dwell within... In different times, you could simply dismiss them, even more so that there was no solid proof of their existence apart from overheard tales, as simple superstitions, but not today. Not in Strange Aeon.

"Well, this is troublesome," Kroenen observed as he watched the lake surface. He figured his Engel could handle underwater work if it came to that, but wasn't sure how well the rest of the patrol would fare.

"Ravage, go around the lake shore, check for tracks. Lightning, go with and provide back up. Wolf, full sensor scan of the lake, keep weapons ready," he quickly gave out orders while activating all his own sensory systems to try and get a better idea of what might be in the lake. "Karski outpost, Faust patrol reporting. Source of disturbance appears to be within lake at our coordinates. We are investigating the site from shore presently," the lieutenant reported in calmly before turning his attention to the sensory readings from Faust.

"Wolf acknowledges."

Adolf flipped on the targeting & thermal sensors, orienting both toward the lake, along with the radar systems. If it boiled some fish, well then, they'd have fish tonight.

As Wolf closed towards the lake, all of sudden your sensors went off-line, barring basic audio/visual systems, including loudspeakers. Trying to contact the base yielded only static and white noise. Something just scrambled your systems, apparently.

"Confirmed. Ravager, moving out" Asura began patrolling the edge of the lake counter-clockwise. Setting his thermal sensors' scan range to 50 meters and assigned it to one of the side display screens. Or at least he would have had they not shut off only moment after activation.
"It seems we have some interference, can anyone else confirm?" He reported.
Title: Re: Long Goodbye - CthulhuTech PBF- IC
Post by: Xander Morhaime on July 19, 2010, 17:53
Kroenen swore quite colourfully - it's a shame the comms were down and the rest of the team were unable to enjoy the display.

As sensors and comms cut out, he pulled Faust back, despite the Engel's protests - it wanted to stop the interference at the source, Kroenen wanted to be out of its range. Relying on hand signals, he waved his hand away from the lake, instructing the patrol to pull back, then signalling them to regroup on his position as he continued moving back and watching his sensors for the moment they started working... and keeping a close eye on the water and the skies. He felt extremely exposed at the moment, and felt Faust bristling up as his own mood blended over to that of the Engel.

Post by: Aerdan on July 19, 2010, 17:59
Adolf backed up with the signal, at the same time signaling back that it was Migou ECM. Accompanying the hand-signals were a vociferous string of cursing that had probably turned sailors' ears red before; fortunately, comm blackouts prevented the rest of the team from hearing it.
Title: Re: Long Goodbye - CthulhuTech PBF- IC
Post by: Gargulec on July 19, 2010, 18:01
Moving away from the waters helped. After getting around seventy- or eighty meters away from the lake, sensors and comms came back to life.

For a few moments at least. Few second later, they died again.
Title: Re: Long Goodbye - CthulhuTech PBF- IC

Raziny moved her mecha near the Ravager, "providing backup". Already mission came not as it was intended for her, so she was confused and decided to leave thinking to somebody more prepared to it. If somebody really dangerous happens, she'll change her mood hopefully. But now she was simply standing near, doing absolutely nothing.
Title: Re: Long Goodbye - CthulhuTech PBF- IC
Post by: S.K. Ren on July 20, 2010, 11:22
From the lack of response Asura realized his comms were out as well and kicked the interior of the mech. Turning to the main group he saw Faust motioning for them to regroup. As he approached the rest of the team he made a motion asking What now?
Title: Re: Long Goodbye - CthulhuTech PBF- IC
Post by: Xander Morhaime on July 20, 2010, 14:26
Kroenen treated his Engel to another colourful litany of curses as the sensors and comms died again. Suddenly, though, he stopped as he sensed Faust tense up - the Engel had spotted something. Focusing once again on his connection to the cyborg and its senses, he sought out what it was it had seen...

"There, a shimmer in the air."
"Stealth?"
"Bug?"
"Fire."

The chain of mental exchange took less than a second as combat instincts kicked in. Faust quickly raised up its plasma cannon and, pointing it towards the lake shore, fired off two snap shots at its perceived target, one slightly higher than the other.
Title: Re: Long Goodbye - CthulhuTech PBF- IC
Post by: Gargulec on July 21, 2010, 15:56
Crackling ball of plasma struck what appeared shimmering air, and apparently struck well. Dragonfly that hid behind stealth systems and jammed your comms and sensors was revealed as it's stealth malfunctioned due to massive damage suffered. Seconds later, it's A-Pods followed, and the wretched thing fall heavily into the water, drowning whatever was inside.

Perhaps you would cheer up, if not for the fact that in a heartbeat, the entire surface of the lake literally exploded, showering you with the water, as three organic-looking mecha emerged from the depths. It appears that they were hiding, using both waters and ECM systems to hide from you.

Not any longer.

"Ohh, scheiße," Kroenen muttered under his breath. Faust reacted quite quickly, and did what was only natural since it already had its plasma cannon pointed in the right direction. With just a nudge from Kroenen it let loose another shot, aimed at the lead Locust. "Weapons free, feuer frei!" he called out to the rest of his patrol.

The first shot was unexpected but not concerning; However the sudden commotion from the lake was. Turing to see who the opponent was, Asura found himself faced with three enemy Locusts emerging from the lake. Suddenly another shot fired overhead, striking the middle Locust in the head. Snapping out of his daze, Asura accelerated towards the leftmost locust.
"Finally, Some excitement!" he muttered. At range he was a target, up close he was demon.

Due to Adolf's guesstimate over the presence of Migou ECM, he was only mildly surprised (if that) by the sudden appearance of the Migou Locusts. SOP for patrols was to have weapons armed, should they be needed, and so his laser cannon was already warmed up and ready to fire--all it needed was a target.

He paused long enough to center his targeting reticules on the leading Locust, and fired.

As soon as Raziny saw enemy, all her thoughts were completely wiped away. She was completely focused on the battle, only thing she knew now is current orders and her complete battle training. And orders, as she understand, were fire at will. So she did. A ray of pure energy targeted towards center Locust appeared from her mecha's gun.

The cannonade was successful. Under the hailstorm of energy weapon fire, central Locust first recoiled, only to get knocked down seconds later by Raziny's charge beam, following the lead of the dragonfly earlier.

Moment's later, two reaming migou mecha turned it's cannons at charging Asura. Two loud crackles were heard, as charge beams fired. Thankfully, they both whizzed harmlessly over the dodging machine.

'...Faust, do you copy? This is Karski Outpost to Faust, do you copy?'

As the base tried to reach you out through the radio, Adolf and Kroenen managed to critically damage the Locust, only after it managed to evade Asura blow. Heartbeat later, Raziny's charge beam literally obliterated the almost wrecked Locust, leaving only a small crater as only trace of your existence.

And then, all was calm.  You managed to dispatch the migou without even a smallest dent. No small feat. Command still tried to contact you, likely freaking out due to the comm breakdown caused by ECM.

Time to go home?

Kroenen allowed himself to relax slightly, though he felt his Engel still bristled up. Malachs, he'd found, took a while to come down off their combat high.

"Karski outpost, Faust patrol here... we've had a minor run-in with bugs," he reported, surveying the surroundings. "One scouter, three fighters, all killed and accounted for," he added, coming up to the lake's edge, scanning the water for any more activity. "No own casualties to report. Will be resuming patrol route presently, over."

"Squad, well done," he said, switching to the squad's channel. "Quick sweep of the lake, and then back to the patrol route, just in case there's any more of those things lurking around."

Further investigation of the lakeside did not give any new informations or clues. Apart from smoldering migou wreckage, there was nothing to be found here.

Yes, definitely time to go home.

Island Among the Sea of Ruins

The city- or rather it's remains lied in the bottom of small valley, surrounded by hills from all sides. Thanks to it, you were able to take a good look at it every time when you were returning.

You were told that before the First Arcanotech war, it was one of the biggest cities in the region, with over one hundred thousand population, bustling with human life, growing bigger and more influential with every passing year.

Not any more.

What you could see was a sea of ruins. City got leveled during the first hours of Nazzadi invasion, and what remained of it was later wrecked during vicious street warfare. Not a single building was left untouched by war. Rubble covered every street apart from those few that were purposely cleared for military. No more than a thousand civilians still lived here, rest either fled or died. They were jaded people, choosing the life outside the safe boundaries of arcologies, in the land were NEG laws were seldom enforced. They were dangerous people, often heavily armed and prepared for almost every possible situation.

Anyway, passing through former main street of the city, heading toward the walled off section that became Karski Outpost, was still able to made you feel uneasy, even in the bright light of the day. Vegetation reclaiming the land, wild animals hiding in collapsed houses, scared by your noisy machines. Claw marks on some walls, dire reminder that nature in Strange Aeon was no longer as docile as we would want it to be, and that even so close to military, monsters could still thrive at nights.

Finally, you arrived at the Karski Outpost gate. High wall, topped with barbed wire separated it from the ruins and it's dwellers. A few automated turrets tracked your moves- no one, after all, can be trusted this days.

It took few seconds for automated systems to scan you, and then massive gate that lead to the inside of the base opened, letting you in.

Raziny again looked through the ruins. Even if she remembered that it's not her fist day at Karski, the sight was not easy forgetable. "What could happen if we did won that war?" - a quick though stroke through her mind.
"Come on, we're at home. Now we'll rest and possibly have some fun. Throw away those thoughts" - spoke Raziny to herself.

Asura followed silently behind the group. There was some action today but it was short lived. There was never enough excitement in this place. Occasional skirmishes yes, but nothing to really get the blood pumping. Off duty, all he did was sculpt, study and practice his para-psychic abilities. It was routine...
Title: Re: Long Goodbye - CthulhuTech PBF- IC
Post by: Gargulec on August 04, 2010, 16:11
Radio again broke the silence.

'Control to Faust's squad: Welcome home, people' you heard, as the reinforced gates swung open, letting you in.

Karski Outpost was not a very glorious sight. Build over the levelled town square, it consisted of a few small, sturdy buildings which housed all the facilities the base could possibly need, mecha docking/repair bay, landing pad for A-Pod vehicles, and, of course, the hospital, one of the main recovery sites for NEG soldiers in the region. It also housed an psychiatric wing, operating under the auspice of Ashcroft Foundation, where those touched by Aeon War Syndrome where treated.

You made your way inside the mecha docking bay. Interior, lit by several high-power lamp looked as every other hangar you have seen, with tons of spare parts, tools and machines scattered around- however, in organized fashion. You could not see many people inside- apparently, there was no work to be done now.

With a little bit of hassle, you managed to put your mecha in their bays, and, finally, leave the cockpits- or control capsules.

You were greeted by familiar sight. Propped against one of the boxes, a girl in her late teens rested. Her skin- and hair- were snow white, contrasting with orange workcrew uniform. You knew her well- she was your outpost own military brat, a daughter to chief engineer of the entire base, and, if it was not obvious from the start a white xenomix. The girl- around sixteen in her age- shared mechanical inclinations with her father, and as such, was nearly official part of the workcrew, trusted so much that she was even allowed to help with mecha repairs.

This does not mean that she was widely liked, though. Whites were usually rather not easy going people, and it was doubly true for her.

'Welcome back, bug crunchers' you heard her voice as you were climbing down from your machines. 'Any problems with mecha? Damage?'

"Skirmish went off with no friendly damage, Gott sei Dank. Faust will need a restock of the rocket pod before the next outing, though," Kroenen said, his tone rather reserved.

For his part, the Engel pilot wasn't terribly imposing. His frame was rather lean and gaunt, his head shaved bare, his face thin. He didn't have much in the way of distinguishing physical features, save the Engel interface. There was something of a haunted look in his eyes, however - no doubt a leftover from his service time during both Arcanotech Wars.

"When's debriefing?" he asked, turning to look over his Engel for anything that needed seeing to. The base had its mechanics, to be sure, but he wasn't about to let others go poking around Faust before he'd checked it over. Besides, he had some solid technical expertise himself.

'Mhm' she muttered with a shrug, snatched a cigarette from a pocket, lighting it with but a touch of fingertip. As every White, she was a parapsychic and she was not even trying to hide that. 'I guess someone will see into this... And please' she added, pointing the smoke towards Razziny 'keep your jokes to yourself. They are kind of path...'

'Ketry!' sharp, loud voice interrupted her speech. You turned your heads towards it's source, to see a short, burly man, wearing this same uniform as the xenomix, with additional patched that identified him as a Chief Engineer of the outpost, emerging from one of the hangar storerooms. You all knew him, of course, and as hard as it was to believe, he was the father of the White, despite showing no similarities whatsoever to his daughter. 'Sorry for her again' he said, glaring angrily at Ketry. 'Anyway, you are to report to the Old Man for debriefing, ASAP.'

The Old Man was, of course, Major Alexander Sully, commander of the outpost, and your direct superior.

Sadly, all your possible conversations on the way to the Old Man's office were rendered impossible by thunderous roar of large aircraft taking off from the outpost landing pad. Thankfully, judging by the huge pile of boxes it left, it brought only supplies, not additional wounded for the hospital.

Ah, yes. The hospital. If there was anything remarkable about Karki Outpost, it was the hospital. Huge, slightly imposing structure, with thick walls and small windows looked like a futuristic version of the Bedlam House. You know more than one person in the base that was personally crept by this building, even knowing that it is certainly one of the safest places in the region.

One thing puzzled you as were strolling through the base. Everyone you have passed by- a fellow pilot and a few ordinary grunts appeared to be greatly disturbed or unsettled by something. You had no time to inquire, but it could not be a good sign.

Poor, Unfortunate Soul

The interior of Alexander Sully office was rather bare and unremarkable- epitome of the base. Desk with a rack for data crystals, a shelf with a few personal items- old holos, an old-fashioned photo, a medal which you did not recognize. Nothing special.

The Old Man, however, was all but bare and unremarkable. Tall and muscular still appeared like he could bend steel rods with his bare hands, despite his advanced age. He glanced at you, smiled, and showed you to sit down.

'Well' he spoke, his voice more than a little bit husky. 'There quite a bit going on here now. I guess you noticed already. Anyway, first things first: report. I want to hear it, before we proceed.'

Kroenen saluted first, out of formality, then gave a light shrug. "Not much to report, sir. Majority of the patrol went quietly, no enemy contact. On the final leg, lieutenant Hertz picked up some disturbance and we diverted off course to investigate. Ran into an ECM field, scrambled our comms and sensors... Faust managed to spot the source regardless and take it out. Engagement with 1 scoutbug and three locust-class bugs followed, during which all enemy units were rendered inoperable, with no damage to our own unit. After the engagement and a final sweep of the area we returned to the patrol route and to base. Sir."

"So what's going on, Alex? You've usually got things here in Ordnung, but today everyone looks like there's going to be an inspection from high command or something..."

Alex frowned before replying, and grabbed a glass of water, chucking some sort of tablet into it. The liquid begun to hiss and bubble.

'Let just say' he said, taking a sip 'that I have small pile of good news, and a huge mountain of bad ones... The good ones are connected to your flawless victory. Two hours ago, I received a report that our air forces three hundreds clicks to the east intercepted and eliminated a migou flight bearing our way- given that it had an empty transporter among them, it seems logical that they were trying to pick up the machines you have busted, so it looks like it was a deep reconnaissance op after all, and we do not have to fear being attacked any time soon... Furthermore, migou are withdrawing in Easter Europe, even giving up ground. Intel says that they trying to hold back Rapine Storm from wrecking them in Asia, and transfer some forces from less prolific fronts, giving us more space to breathe. So, the outpost, the region, and, by extension, we, are safe. For now, at least.'

'As for the bad news... Well. First of all, we had another civvie from hospital personnel disappear during the leave in the city. Secondly, there are more and more reports of shoot-outs in the city at night, but again, despite the fact that we have no idea how is wasting who, this is not really our problem.'

He stood up from behind the desk, and gestured towards you.

'Follow me, you gotta see something.'

He led you outside the office, to the main control and security building, and then, taking a stairs down, to the underground section of the base. He remained silent on his way there.

Finally, you arrived at small door. Alex entered a long code on the keypad, and the door swung open, revealing what appeared to be an interrogation room of some sorts. You had no idea it was even there. From what you could see through the window (two-way mirror, without a doubt), there were three people inside. Two of them were probably grunts, clad in combat armour and armed with assault rifles... The third, sitting on a lone chair, with her hand and legs shackled, was a Nazzadi women. She seemed somehow familiar... Then, she raised her head, and you instantly recognized her. She was a fellow mecha pilot, from the other mecha squad in the outpost. You could not quite remember her name, though... As far as you could remember, she joined the forces not long ago... month maybe?Or two? Anyway, from what you have she was really well liked by her squad.

Alex sighed.

'I had her arrested this morning, after routine search in her quarters turned out that she was in possession of uncensored copies of "Book of Five Shadows" and "Breath of R'lyeh".'

He sighed again.

'This alone would a very bad sign, and good reason for entire outpost to become nervous- finding an unregistered, illegal sorcerer among the pilots is never a good sign, right? But it is far worse, this whole case really stinks... You see, yesterday, I have received an anonymous denunciation that this Kiy here is harbouring illegal tomes and dabbling in forbidden arts. And someone really did his best to make this information remain anonymous, there is no way to track it to it's source. Suspicious, right? But I had to conduct a search, just in case. Furthermore, Kiy is claiming that she has never seen this books before. Of course, I know that every single sorcerer would do the same in her situation, but somehow I find it hard to believe that a pilot fresh out of academy is also an adept of forbidden art skilled enough to actually utilize contents of this books. The tomes we found are really advanced, containing a knowledge which mere comprehending would require and iron mind and iron will. And it does not appear that the girls has any of above. But again, we have found them in her quarters, and this means that we should hand her over to OIS, to determine if she is even mortal any more...'

He paused, and took a long look at the girl. She was literally shaking and sobbing, and you could not say if it was fear, anger or both.

'I served in OIS for a good few years. And I know that if she will be taken into one of their facilities, it will mean a great, great suffering for her, even if she is actually innocent. And even if they prove it... Her career in the Army will be wasted, and I am afraid that her entire life will get ruined as well. I have seen such situations before, a few times too many, if you ask me. And if she really is innocent, someone must have framed her, right? And that would mean that we have someone pursuing his own agenda here, and God knows what will it bring.'

He turned towards you.

'Tell me, would you do an old man a final favour?'

Kroenen watched the prisoner with hardly any hint of emotion on his face before shaking his head, muttering, "Du sollst nicht andere Götter haben neben mir," under his breath before turning to the commander. "Best not take any chances with sorcery. We've enough trouble on our hands as is," he said calmly.

"Not that I particularly trust a source that insists on remaining untraceable," he added after a few moments' thought.

"What's the favour then, Alex? I hope you're not going to ask us to track down this anonymous tip - we're mech pilots, not investigators..."

Alex shrugged. He looked troubled... older than he was.

'No, not...' he begun, before suddenly pausing for a few long moments.

'The tip is being investigated at this moment. But, yes, I'd like you to check something too... I have severe shortage of trustable man these days, friends...'

'You see, this girl may or may not be a dabbler... But the real danger lies in the books. Those tomes contain knowledge how to summon thing better left undescribed. And they are not fakes. That means that somebody in the city... in this den has access to lore that is more dangerous than any mecha could ever be. Worse yet, somehow, he... they? managed to smuggle them into my base. And this is really, really bad.'

Again a pause, followed by what appeared to be complete change of topic.

'Tell me, would you like to get a short leave? To get a little R&R outside the walls?'

That was not the Alex you remembered- straightforward, self-reliant men. Either something changed him, or he needed your help desperately.

Asura had stayed towards the back of the room -disinterested- for most of the conversation. However at this latest comment his interest piqued.
"I think the Major is right about this. I couldn't care less for someone caught with illegal possessions, intentional or staged. But if someone has tha ability to smuggle such goods without being detected, we have a serious problem."

Zariny was about to yawn from boredom. Cults, secret tomes... Yes, they can summon something awful, but will we care about it? There are people who would care about it. If no, then she would probable be dead. Anyway, it's not her problems. But when Major said about going out and doing something different from boring walking around, all of her boredom was wiped out.

"That is going to be different from those boring patrols, right? Then I'm surely for the trip." - added Raziny.

Kroenen swore quietly under his breath, shaking his head. "Rookie, the way this'll be different from patrols is that if things turn interesting, we're not going to have our mechs between us and incoming enemy fire," he pointed out without trying to hide the disapproval in his voice.

That said, he turned back to the commander. "Alex, we're pilots, not special forces. The only way we'd have of actually interfering with something like this without our mechs would be if whoever's pushing those books has no clue how to use them and no significant security forces. Bad habit to go into a fight assuming the opposition to be incompetent. Besides, I don't think Faust will appreciate the downtime..."

Alex tried to smile, but he only managed to give you some sort of a... grimace, for the lack of the better word.

'I don't need any special forces for the thing I want you to do' he muttered. 'Besides- you are the only trusted personnel I have, and the thing is kind of, well, urgent- and as I said before, I don't want to contact OIS just now.'

He led you out of the interrogation room, back into the brightly lit, empty corridor. It did not escape your attention that there was no cameras or other surveillance device here- it was quite odd, considering the purpose of this section of the base.

'See, when this outpost was established, with a great effort, I managed to...' he paused, suddenly. 'Well, I just hope that this conversation will never reach outside of this walls, for what I have done may be considered a transgression of the law. I contacted and struck a deal with head honcho of the local Arcane Underground. He promised to keep an eye for anything really dangerous- like those books, if I did not interfere with his businesses. It worked- until now, that is. I contacted him few hours ago, and he agreed to meet with "someone trusted" in the city. Myself, I can't go, I can't leave my post. But you? You can get short leave for today's evening, go and see the man, and give me any information he gives you. Such books appearing on the market could not escape his notice- so it is likely that he will now the seller, or, better yet, a buyer.'

He shrugged.

'It should not be any dangerous. I know this man, he is sensible, he knows that if anything happens to you, I have his name, and I will unleash same on him sevenfold.'

"Vengeance is scant comfort to dead men," Kroenen pointed out soberly. "I don't like these secret dealings and arcane mysteries. For old times' sake, though... I suppose I can go meet with this contact of yours. If it goes sour, though, I am coming back to haunt you."
